はじめに、ここにおられるすべてのお母さんたちに、母の日おめでとうございます。
今日は仕事についてお話しますが、お母さんたちというのは、あらゆる仕事の中でもすごく大変なことをされている方々ですね。そして、それは決して終わりがない仕事です。
皆さんの愛の働き、そして見過ごされがちな皆さんの強さに感謝いたします。
祈りましょう。
最近、総理に就任した高市早苗さんが、このように語っています。
「ワークライフバランスという言葉を捨てる。働いて、働いて、働いて、働いて、働いていく」「全員に働いていただく。馬車馬のように働いていただく」
私の限られた経験では、これは日本の強い勤勉さをあらわしているように感じます。
実は最近、この「働」という漢字は日本で作られた漢字（国字）だと知りました。
文字通り、「人」が「重い」ものを「力いっぱい」動かしているようなイメージです。
しかし、一生懸命働くという考え方は、日本だけのものではありません。
アメリカでは、「ワークワークワーク」という言葉は、義務感や単調さ、そしてやるべきことをやり遂げようとする気持ちなど、様々な感情を呼び起こします。
「仕事」というと、二つの感情の間で揺れ動くもののように感じます。それは「目的」と「痛み」です。
それでは「仕事」に対する神様の本来のご計画と、人間の反抗によってそこにどのように痛みが入り込んでしまったのか、創世記を少し見てみましょう。
創世記2章15節にはこうあります。「神である主は人を連れて来て、エデンの園に置き、そこを耕させ、また守らせた」
神様の人に対する本来のご計画は、園を「世話」し「管理」するためだったことがわかりますね。
私たちはみんな、どんな作業にも何らかの意味があると感じていると思います。
実際、その作業にあまり意味がない、あるいは全く意味がないと感じ始めると、私たちは落ち込み、やる気を失ってしまいます。
こう問いかけ始めるんですね。「なんでこんなことをやってるんだろう？」
最近、私の業界では多くの変化が起きています。
私は、映画の予告編に使われる音楽の制作の仕事をしています。
私たちの会社では、音楽を制作し、それを予告編を作るクライアントに送り、気に入ってもらえたものが実際に使われる、という過程で仕事をしています。
2019年、Netflixのような配信サービスが、より多くのコンテンツを出すためにコスト削減を始め、2020年にはその流れがさらに加速しました。
それ以降、俳優のストライキが起こり、さらに最近では、AIが仕事や雇用に影響を与え始めています。
しかし私にとって一番つらかったのは、雇用が減り、予算が少なくなることよりも、私たちが制作した音楽を、そもそも聞いてもらえないという流れがあったことです。
これは本当に落ち込みますよね…私のしている仕事に、果たして意味はあるのでしょうか？
仕事に意味が見出せなくなると、大きな重荷になってしまいます。
聖書は、この重荷の原因が、神に対する人間の最初の反抗、つまり、罪にあると教えています。
創世記3章17～19節にはこうあります。「（あなたが...）食べてはならないとわたしが命じておいた木から食べたので、大地は、あなたのゆえにのろわれる。あなたは一生の間、苦しんでそこから食を得ることになる。...あなたは、顔に汗を流して糧を得、ついにはその大地に帰る。...」
アダムが神様の命令に背いたこの瞬間、園を管理するという彼の仕事は本来の意味を失い、呪いの影響を受けるようになってしまったんです。
大地は自然に食べ物を生み出さなくなり、大きな苦労を伴って、働かなければならなくなりました。
しかし、神様はこの出来事よりも前から、人間に回復のご計画を持っておられました。
創世記1章には、神様がどのようにこの世界を造られたかが記されています。そして創世記2章2～3節にはこうあります。「神は第七日に、なさっていたわざを完成し、第七日に、なさっていたすべてのわざをやめられた。神は第七日を祝福し、この日を聖なるものとされた。その日に神が、なさっていたすべての創造のわざをやめられたからである。 」
ここでは、神様の安息がきよく、聖なるものであるとわかります。
私たちはそのきよさの中で、神様と共に休むように造られました。
神様に背く前は、アダムは仕事と休みを同時に楽しんでいました。
それらは対立するものではなく、調和のうちにあったのです。
仕事をしているのに、それが意義や目的に満ちていて、もはや仕事というより喜びに感じられる、そんな経験はないでしょうか？
ナルニア国物語の著者C.S.ルイスはこのような経験を、単なる「楽しみ」ではなく、「突き刺さるような喜び」と表現しています。
その喜びの瞬間には、それが長く続かないという切なさや痛みも伴います。
聖書ではこれを「重い永遠の栄光」として記しています。
私たちは本来、神様の安息と仕事を同時に楽しむよう造られましたが、神様の律法に背くこと、つまり、罪が、私たちをそのきよさの中から遠ざけてしまいます。
聖書はこう教えています。神様のうちに安息するとき、私たちの全ての働きは神様のためとなる。
コロサイ人への手紙3章23～24節「何をするにも、人に対してではなく、主に対してするように、心から行いなさい。あなたがたは、主から報いとして御国を受け継ぐことを知っています。あなたがたは主キリストに仕えているのです。 」
これを理解するために、まず最初に見ていきたいのは、こちらです。
一つ目、神様がどのように安息を与えてくださるか。
この世界における仕事の最大のゆがみは、奴隷制です。
人が人を奴隷とし、自分のために働かせるということです。
つまり、人が神様の立場と力を自分のもののように扱い、「私の言う通りに、いつでも従え」と絶対的な服従を求めるのです。
2021年時点で、世界では約5千万人が強制労働の状況にあると推定されています。
また、この数字には、劣悪な労働環境や、不当な長時間労働が日常となっている社会で働く人々は含まれていません。
出エジプト記では、神の民イスラエルは、エジプト人の奴隷とされていました。
彼らの労働は耐えがたいものとなりましたが、神様はご自身のしもべであるモーセやヨシュアを通して彼らを奴隷状態から救いだし、約束の地へと導かれました。聖書はこれを「安息へ導く」と表現しています。
それは、エジプトでの抑圧的な労働からの安息です。
神様は、奴隷状態や支配の圧制という呪いから、ご自分の民を解放する道を備えておられました。
また、出エジプト記7章5節ではこう言われています。「わたしが手をエジプトの上に伸ばし、イスラエルの子らを彼らのただ中から導き出すとき、エジプトは、わたしが主であることを知る。」
神様が「手を伸ばし」、解放されるという表現は、興味深いですよね。
これは、神様がご自分の民を救うために働かれることを表しています。
そしてそれこそが、イエス様が私たちを救うためにしてくださったことです。
私たちは自分自身の罪の奴隷となり、神様に背いていますが、イエス様が十字架で成し遂げてくださったみわざによって、その安息に入ることを選ぶとき、解放されるのです。
神様は、あなたが苦しんでいることをご存じです。
不当な扱いを受けたり、利用されたり、過度に働かされたり、正当な報酬を得られていない方がいるかもしれません。
神様は、それらすべてをご覧になっています。
しかしそれ以上に、私たちが自分の罪の奴隷となっていることもご存じです。
神様の律法を破ると、その結果である「死」に縛られてしまいます。
まるで、囚人の足かせのように。
仏教もこの点をよく理解しています：それは、人は自分自身に縛られ、そのことによって苦しむ、という考えで、自己を超越することで自由になれるというのです。
しかしそれは、足かせの鍵を見つけたとしても、まだ牢の中に閉じ込められているようなものです。
そして、「死ねば、その牢から解放される」と考えるわけです。
まるで、「自分の力で鎖から解放され、最終的には死によって牢からも出ることができる」と言っているようなものです。
しかしそれでは、たとえ牢から出ても、まだ刑務所の中にいることに気づいていません。それは、永遠に神様のご臨在から切り離された状態です。
聖書はそれを「第二の死」と呼んでいます。
私たちはどこかで「十分に努力すれば」あるいは「善い行いが悪い行いを上回れば」、最終的に永遠の安息に入れるのではないか、と考えてしまいます。
しかし、それは神様の方法ではありません。
聖書は「罪の報酬は死」であると言っています。
「しかし神の賜物は、永遠のいのちです」
神様の方法は全く違いますね。
神様ご自身が働かれ、私たちに安息と永遠のいのちを賜物として与えてくださるのです。
神様に呼び求めるとき、私たちは鎖からも、牢や刑務所からも解放され、神様と共に、永遠の安息へと導き入れられます。
そしてそれは、私たちが信じ、真理を受け取るとき、ただちに起こるのです。
神様は、私たちを抑圧から救うため、御手を伸ばされる。
どんな時に、自分が抑圧されていると感じますか？
神様はどのように「御手を伸ばし」、あなたに平安を与えてくださいましたか？
二つ目のポイントを見ましょう：イエス様はどのように仕事を再定義されるか。
イエス様の時代、宗教的な人々は、神様の「聖なる休み」（安息日）の意味をゆがめてしまい、人々の霊性や宗教的な熱心さを図る基準として用いていました。
イエス様はこれに対し、マルコの福音書でこう語られました。「安息日はひとのために設けられたもので、人が安息日のために造られたのではない」
また、ヨハネの福音書では、イエス様が安息日に人を癒されたことが記されています。「そのためユダヤ人たちは、イエスを迫害し始めた。イエスが、安息日にこのようなことをしておられたからである。イエスは彼らに答えられた。「わたしの父は今に至るまで働いておられます。それでわたしも働いているのです。」
イエス様は、神様が安息されながらも働いておられると認めようとしなかった人々の偽善を明らかにされました。
神様の聖なる休みは、人々に労働からの休息を与えると同時に、すべてを神様に信頼するよう思い起こさせるしるしでもありました。
働かなければ収入も得られないため、安息日は、すべてが神様から来ていることを人々に思い出させてくれたのです。
しかし彼らは、人が単に体を休めるために造られたのではないことを見失っていました。
私たちは、神様のうちに安息しながら働くように造られたんです。
子どもの頃、友人の家には美しい裏庭があり、まるで小さな公園のようでした。
時々その家に行っては、走り回って遊ぶのが楽しかったことを覚えています。
その家ではいつも、楽しくて、穏やかに過ごせました。
大学生になり、その友人の両親が家を解放してくれて、私を含む4人の学生がそこに住みながら学校に通うことになりました。
ガレージにはビリヤード台もありました。
それは大学生の夢だったんです。
子どもの頃は時々しか味わえなかったあの平和で楽しい時間を、日常的に経験することができました。
でも、同時に大事なことも学びました。
突然、夕食の準備や池の掃除、皿洗いなど、自分の役割を果たすことが求められたのです。
穏やかには暮らせたものの、そこでも日々の生活の中に、仕事が含まれていました。
ヘブル人への手紙4章8～10節にはこうあります。「もしヨシュアが彼らに安息を与えたのであれば、神はその後に別の日のことを話されることはなかったでしょう。
したがって、安息日の休みは、神の民のためにまだ残されています。
神の安息に入る人は、神がご自分のわざを休まれたように、自分のわざを休むのです。
ご存じのように、イエス様を受け入れる前は、私たちは断続的にしか休息を経験できず、それは一日の3分の1、1週間の7分の1ほどに限られています。
しかし、神様が与えてくださる安息とは、永遠の安息であり、キリストにあって目的を持って働くために新しく生まれることです。
イエス様を信頼し、私たちのたましいが安息に導き入れられると、私たちの働きは再定義されます。
まだやるべきことや行くべき場所があり、会うべき人々はいますが、神様がこれらを導き、整えておられます。
しかし、仕事の意味や、それを行う動機は、完全に変えられるのです。
神様の働きは、安息から生まれる。
私たちはどんな時に、自分の力で働こうとしていると思いますか？
神様が与えてくださる安息に、どうすれば入れるのでしょうか？
神様が私たちを安息へと導いてくださるとき、私たちの働きはどのように変わるでしょうか？
私は仕事をやめ、教会での仕事を探すべきなのでしょうか？
続けて、考えてみましょう。
イエス様に従う者は、どのように働くのか。
コロサイ人への手紙3章22～24節を見てみましょう。
奴隷たちよ、すべてのことについて地上の主人に従いなさい。人のご機嫌取りのような、うわべだけの仕え方ではなく、主を恐れつつ、真心から従いなさい。
何をするにも、人に対してではなく、主に対してするように、心から行いなさい。あなたがたは、主から報いとして御国を受け継ぐことを知っています。あなたがたは主キリストに仕えているのです。
冒頭でこの箇所を読んだのは、日々の仕事を新しい視点で見るためです。
神様は、あなたが自らの手で働き、自分や周りの人を支えるために、仕事を与えてくださいました。
ほとんどの場合は、救われた人が教会で「聖なる仕事」に就くという機会は与えられないでしょう。
多くの場合、救われた後も、同じ上司や同じ同僚と共に働き続けます。
聖書の第一コリント7章22～23節にはこうあります。「主にあって召された奴隷は、主に属する自由人であり、同じように自由人も、召された者はキリストに属する奴隷だからです。あなたがたは、代価を払って買い取られたのです。人間の奴隷となってはいけません。 」
ここからわかるのは、イエス様に従う者となるとき、私たちはもはや人のために働くのではなく、この世の主人に従い、仕えることを通して、実はキリストに仕えているのだということです。
私たちは生けるキリストに仕えており、キリストは良い主人であられます。
そんなことが可能なのでしょうか？
イエス様にしているかのように、心を尽くし、全ての働きをすることは可能でしょうか？
このコロサイ人への手紙の箇所は、キリストこそが私たちの本当の主人であるため、私たちはキリストにあって、自分の上司に「最善を尽くす」ことができるのだと教えてくれます。
これは私にとって、自分の仕事に大きな意味を与え、神様からの召しを感じられる言葉です。
より多くのお金や利益を求めて働くのではなく、純粋な心から誠実に働くことができるのです。
給料のためだけに働くのではなく、永遠の報いを受け継ぐことを知りながら働くことができます。
しかし、自分の人生のコントロールを手放し、主にゆだねないのなら、キリストが与える安息に入ることはできません。
残念なことに、神様によって救われたイスラエルの子たちは、約束された安息の地に入るよう導かれていたにもかかわらず、そこへ入ることを拒みました。.
彼らは敵や未知の状況を恐れたんです。
そして聖書は、彼らが不従順のゆえに安息に入ることを拒んだと語っています。.
そのため彼らは一生の間、荒野でさまよい、奴隷ではなくなったにもかかわらず、神様が備えられていたものを経験することなく、たださまよい続けました。
私たちも真理を知りながらそれを信じようとしないなら、目的もなくさまよい、自らの恐れや不従順の奴隷であり続けるのです。
しかし、私たちが信じるとき、キリストは永遠の安息を与えて、新たな「働き」へと私たちを招かれます。それは、神様をたたえ、神様に栄光をお返しする働きです。
神様は、ご自身の安息の家へとあなたを導かれます。
そして、新しい名前を与えてくださいます。
あなたと共におられ、あなたを通して働かれると約束されます。
そして再びあなたを働きへと送り出されます。今度は、ご自身の導きのもとで。
もし王の王のために皿洗いをするとしたら、どのように洗うでしょうか？
もしイエス様のために書類を整理し、イエス様にメールを書くとしたら、どのようにそれを行いますか？
「神様のうちに安息するとき、私たちの全ての働きは神様のためとなる」ことをお話しましたね。
イエス様に従う者は、神様のために働く力が与えられる。
今週、主のために働くために、どのように考え方を変えられるでしょうか？
まだイエス様を信じていない方は、今日、神様が与えてくださる安息を、どのように受け取ることができるでしょうか？
友人の皆さん、仕事の重荷や終わりのない働きに圧倒され、そこに意味が見いだせないように感じているなら、
まさに、「働く」という漢字が示す状態を経験されているのかもしれません。
重荷を負い、働いている状態です。
しかし、あなたは一人ではありません。
マタイの福音書11章28節で、イエス様はあなたをこのように招かれています。
「すべて疲れた人、重荷を負っている人はわたしのもとに来なさい。わたしがあなたがたを休ませてあげます」

Today we’re talking about work, but mothers have some of the hardest work of all… and it never stops.
Thank you for your labor of love and often under-appreciated strength.

Recently, when Sanae Takaichi became Prime Minister she said,
“I will get rid of the term work-life balance; I will work work work work work.”
“I’ll have everyone work – work like workhorses.”
From my limited experience, this seems to represent the strong work-ethic in Japan.
In fact, I just learned the kanji 働 is a uniquely Japanese kanji (国字).
Literally a person 人 with something heavy 重 using all their might 力.
However, the idea of hard work is not an exclusive value to Japan.
In America “work work work” is a phrase that stirs up emotions of duty and monotony and doing everything needed to get things done.
Ideas of “work” seem to pull between two different feelings, purpose, and pain.
Let’s quickly look at Genesis to see God‘s original plan for work and how mankind’s rebellion introduced pain into it.
Genesis 2:15 says, “the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
We see here that God‘s original plan for man was to “tend” or “take care of” the place where you put him.
I think we all realize that tasks carry some sort of meaning.
In fact, when we start to believe a task has less or no meaning we become dis-heartened and lose motivation.
We start to ask “why am i doing this?”
Recently, there have been a lot of disruptions in my industry.
I work in making music for movie trailers.
Our company's process is to make music and send it to clients who make the trailers, in hopes that they’ll hear something they like and use it.
In 2019 streamers like Netflix were cutting costs to put out more content, and then 2020 hit and it accelerated to trend. After that there were actor strikes and most recently AI has started to disrupt work and jobs. But for me, the most disheartening thing wasn’t that there were less jobs, or budgets were lower, but that there was a trend of people not listening to the music we were putting out. This is disheartening.. Does my work even matter?
When our work loses meaning it becomes a heavy weight.
The Bible says that this burden and weight we feel is due to the original rebellion or sin against God.
In Genesis 3:17-19 it says, “(because you have) eaten of the tree of which I’ve commanded you that “you shall not eat” cursed is the ground because of you. In pain you should eat it all the days of your life… by the sweat of your face you should eat bread till you return to the ground…”
At this moment when Adam disobeyed God’s command, his work of taking care of the garden lost its original meaning, and it was replaced with a curse.
The ground wasn’t going to just bring up food naturally, hewe was going to have to work at it with great difficulty.
But God had a plan from before this moment for man to be restored.
In Genesis 1, it outlines how God worked to make the universe, and in Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”
Here we see that God’s rest is considered holy and pure.
e were made to enter into rest with him in that holiness.
Before man disobeyed, Adam enjoyed work and rest simultaneously.
They weren’t polar opposites, but rather living in harmony.
Ever have one of those times when you’re working on something, but because it's meaningful and purposeful it doesn’t feel like work, it’s a joy?
The writer of Chronicles of Narnia CS Lewis described this experience not as “pleasure” but rather “stabs of joy.”
With the moment of joy, comes a pain that it doesn’t last.
This is referred to in the Bible as an eternal weight of glory.
Though we were created to enjoy God’s rest and work simultaneously, disobedience to God’s law, sin, keeps us from being in that holy place.
The Bible teaches when we are at rest in God all our work is for Him
Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
To get to that place, first, let's look at…
One, how God provides rest.
The greatest corruption of work on earth is slavery.
When one man enslaves another to work for him.
He assumes the place and power of God and demands absolute subjection – do whatever I want when I want it.
As of 2021 there was a global estimate of 50 million people in the world living under the conditions of forced labor.
And this obviously doesn’t include people in terrible working conditions or in societies where working unfairly long hours with horrible bosses is a part of everyday life.
In Exodus, God’s people, the Israelites, had been enslaved by the Egyptians.
And the Bible recounts their work becoming unbearable, so God provided them deliverances from slavery through his servants, Moses and Joshua and brought them into the promised land which the Bible often refers to as bringing them into rest.
Rest from the oppressive work that they had been under in Egypt.
God provided a way for his people to be delivered from the curse of slavery and their oppressive overlords.
And it says in Exodus 7:5 “The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.”
Isn’t it interesting that God “stretches out his hand” to deliver?
This is the idea of God working on behalf of his people to save them.
And that is exactly what Jesus did to save us.
We, being in oppressive slavery to our own sin and disobedience of God, can be set free when we choose to enter his rest accomplished by the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
God sees your oppression.
Maybe you’ve been mistreated, taken advantage of, overworked, underpaid.
God sees it all.
But most of all, he knows our enslavement to our wrong doing.
When we break God’s law we are enslaved to its consequence, death.
Like a classic ball-and-chain.
Buddhism also understands this point; the slavery to self pulls me down, so in transcending the self I become free.
But this is like finding the key to your ball-and-chain, to find you are still locked in a cell.
So the logic goes: when I die, I will be free from the cell.
It’s as if to say, “I have the power to work myself out of my chains, and eventually out of my cell in death.”
But the person doesn’t realize that upon leaving the cell they are still locked in a prison: An eternity outside of the presence of God.
What the Bible refers to as “the second death.”
You see, the deception we have in our mind is that somehow, if we work hard enough, if our good outweighs our bad, and so on, THEN we can at last be in a state of endless rest.
But this is not God’s way.
The Bible says “The wages of sin (our salary for sinning) is death.”
“BUT the free gift of God is eternal life.”
You see, God’s way is different.
He does the work and offers rest, eternal life as a gift.
When we call on him he delivers us from the chains, from the cell, from the prison, and brings us into eternal rest with him.
And this happens immediately, when we believe and receive the truth.
God stretches out his hand to deliver us from oppression.
Where have you felt like you are being oppressed?
How does God’s “stretched out hand” bring you peace?
Second let's look at: How Jesus redefines work.
In Jesus’ time the religious people twisted God’s “holy day of rest” (the sabbath) into a way they couldwould measure people’s spirituality or religiousness.
Jesus challenges this by saying in Mark “the Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.”
Also in John, when Jesus was healing someone on the Sabbath, it says, “And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus calls out their hypocrisy by showing that they weren’t willing to see the work that God does as part of resting in God.
God’s holy day of rest was made to give his people rest from labor and it was a physical reminder to trust God for all things.
When we don’t work we don’t make money, so Sabbath was to remind people that everything came from God.
But what they missed was that physically resting wasn’t what we were created for.
We were created to work, while resting in God.
When I was a kid, I had a friend who had a beautiful backyard, it was like a small park.
I remember going to the house every once in a while and enjoying running around and playing.
Every time I went, I felt enjoyment and it was very peaceful.
When I started college, my friend’s parents opened their house for 4 college guys including me to live there while we went to school.
It had a pool table in the garage.
It was a college student's dream.
While I lived there I was able to experience that peace and enjoyment I only got once in a while when I was a kid.
But there was an important lesson I learned as well.
I suddenly was expected to do my part in making dinners, clean the fish pond, and do the dishes.
Even though I lived in peace, work was a part of my everyday life living there.
Hebrews 4:8-10 says, “...if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.”
You see, before receiving Jesus, we only can experience rest in spurts, 1/3rd of everyday and 1/7 of every week.
But receiving the rest that God has for us is to receive an eternal rest, in which we are ‘reborn’ to work with purpose in Christ.
When our souls are brought into rest by trusting in Jesus, our work is redefined.
I still have things to do, places to go, people to see; God engineers these things.
But the meaning of my work and the motivation to do it completely changes.
God’s work comes from a place of rest.
Where do we feel like we are trying to work in our own strength?
How can we enter into the rest that God has provided for us?
So if God brings me into rest, what does my work life look like?
Do I need to quit my job and try to find a job at the church?
Let’s talk about…
how a follower of Jesus works
Let's look at Colossians chapter 3:22-24.
“Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
We read this at the beginning because it frames a new way of looking at our day-to-day work.
God has given you work to do with your hands, to provide for yourself and those around you.
And nine times out of ten he doesn’t save you and bring you to employment at a church doing “holy work.”
Most of the time, you stay right in the place with the same boss and the same co-workers you had before you believed.
In another place 1 Corinthians chapter 7:22-23 the Bible says, “For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.”
You see, when you become a follower of Jesus, we realize we are not working for men any more, we are actually serving Christ by obeying and serving our earthly masters.
We serve the living Christ and he is a good master.
Is that possible?
Is it possible to do everything with your whole heart as if you were doing it for Jesus?
Well this Scripture in Colossians would lead us to believe that in Christ, I can “do my best” for my boss because Jesus is my real boss.
And this gives me a great sense of meaning and calling in my work.
Instead of working greedily for more money and leverage we can work sincerely out of a pure heart.
Instead of working for a paycheck, we can work knowing we will receive an eternal inheritance as our reward.
But we must be willing to give up control of our lives to the Lord or we will never enter the rest that Christ offers.
Unfortunately, after God had rescued the children of Israel from slavery before they entered the promised land, their promised rest, they refused to go in and take the land.
They were frightened by the enemies and unknowns of the land.
And the Bible says that in disobedience they chose not to enter his rest.
So they wandered in the desert for the rest of their lives, no longer slaves, but not experiencing what God had for them, just lost.
If we know the truth and we refuse to believe we will continue to wander aimlessly, a slave to our own fear or disobedience.
But when we believe by faith, Christ offers eternal rest and invites us into a new way of working. One that honors and brings Glory to him.
God brings you into his house of rest.
He gives you a new name.
He promises he is with you and working through you.
And then he returns you to work, but this time under his orders.
If I was washing dishes for the King of Kings, how would I wash them?
If I was filing papers for the Lord or writing an email to Jesus, what way would I go about that?
Remember, when we are at rest in God all our work is for Him.
The Follower of Jesus is empowered to work as unto God.
This week, how will you change your perspective to be doing your work unto the Lord?

Friends, If you are overwhelmed by the weight of work, the constant cycle of labor and it seems there is no meaning.
Maybe you are really experiencing that 働 kanji.
You’re a person laboring under a heavy weight.
You are not alone.
Jesus calls out to you in Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
