Let's say this Greek word together…

American comedy duo Key and Peele once did a skit called… “If We Treated Teachers like Pro Athletes.”
On a fake TV show, like NHK Sunday Sports or ESPN… Key and Peele cover the careers of teachers as if they’re pro-athletes.
In this world, teachers are high-paid celebrities… but professional athletes live paycheck-to-paycheck.
In our world, impressive and entertaining leaders… like actors, athletes, and musicians are idolized…
…whereas teachers who help shape the next generation of human beings… are barely recognized!
And that’s why the skit is funny… because it flips the world’s values on its head.
That’s how God’s kingdom works, too.
Jesus says: The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
The Greek word Jesus uses for servant here is διάκονος diakonos.
DEE - AH - KONOS.
Let's say this Greek word together…
Diakonos!
Diakonos is a general word for “one who serves.”
But it's also the word used for a formal church office called deacon (or 執事), which is the theme of today’s message.
Along with elders, deacons are one of two formal church offices.
Elders (also called pastors) are servant leaders.
Deacons are leading servants.
The world doesn’t value those who humbly serve.
But Jesus does, and the church should too.
So today, let’s consider: なに、なぜ、だれ the WHAT, WHY, and WHO of deacons.
We’ll be looking at 1 Timothy 3:8-13, and also Acts 6:1-7.
First, what are deacons?
1 Timothy 2:8 describes a church office called deacon… 執事.
Now if you’re a native Japanese speaker, this is probably your image of the word 執事.
In English, we call this a “butler”, and that’s not what we’re talking about.
So let me reframe your image of 執事.
Last week when we talked about pastors, we said Jesus is the true senior pastor of this church.
But Jesus is also the original deacon…
Listen to what Jesus says about himself in Mark 10:45, using the word “diakonos” for serve.
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Many religions value humility.
But only in Christianity did God himself become humble.
The One True God of the Bible created us, so we belong to him.
But in our pride, we reject the True God by worshipping false gods and living for ourselves.
This is sin.
God would be just to condemn us for our sin, but he is merciful.
God became a servant for our salvation.
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, became a man.
Because of sin, we owe God a debt we could never afford.
But Jesus gave his life on the cross as a ransom, to pay our debt.
And three days later, Jesus rose, securing eternal life for everyone who believes.
Now… every person has a choice…
By faith, humble yourself before Christ, the God who became humble.
Or… cling to your pride and be justly condemned to hell forever.
***
Christianity is the only religion where God became a servant.
So when you think of a 執事, a deacon don’t think of this…
Think of Jesus, God in flesh, washing his disciples feet.
***
The formal office of deacon began in Acts 6.
Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
The very first church in Jerusalem was multi-ethnic and multi-lingual.
There were the Hebrews… Jews native to the land and fluent in the local language.
And there were the Hellenists who moved from other places and had a different native language, Greek.
There was a serious problem… when the church gave out food, the hellenist widows were being ignored.
Unless the problem was addressed, the church would split along ethnic lines.
The Christian movement would be over before it really even started.
Acts 6:2… And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.”
The twelve apostles knew if they tried to fix this themselves, they’d have no time to preach about Jesus.
Their solution brings us to our second point…
Why do we need deacons?
The very first pastors of the very first church appoint the very first deacons.
Acts 6:3… Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering…
This new system of deacons… pleased the whole gathering… the church avoided a split.
Based on this story, we can understand the role of deacons…
Deacons spot and meet tangible needs.
The deacons in Acts 6 were tasked with daily food distribution.
Today, a deacon might oversee… prayer, youth ministry, event planning, baptism logistics, church finances, or community charity work.
Deacons also promote church unity.
Without shock absorbers, driving your car would feel like riding a roller coaster.
Deacons are the shock absorbers of the church…
I heard it described this way… deacons see a problem → want to protect unity → think creatively → solve the problem.
Deacons support the ministry of pastors.
Acts 6 said the role of pastors is prayer and the ministry of the word.
Too often, the mission slows down because the pastor does everything… accounting, event planning, admin…
Matt Smethurst writes this in his book on deacons…
Show me a church with distracted pastors and a derailed mission, and I will show you a church without effective deacons.
I don’t watch sports, so forgive my bad analogy…
In American Football, the quarterback leads the team.
His job is to throw the ball to wide receivers who run to score touchdowns.
But the quarterback can’t do his job… and the team can’t win the game unless… he has good linemen to protect him.
If pastors are the quarterback, deacons are the linemen.
When a church has good deacons… the gospel advances and the church grows.
We see this in Acts 6:7… And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem…
Throughout church history, deacons have been a force for advancing the gospel.
In the early church, when being a Christian was illegal, the church grew from 500 disciples to 10% of the Roman Empire.
How?
The Roman Emperor Julian was an opponent of Christianity.
But listen to how he explained the explosive growth of the early church.
“Christianity has been especially advanced through loving service rendered to strangers. It is a scandal that the Christians care not only for their own poor but for ours as well.”
And according to historian Rodney Stark, much of this loving service through which Christianity spread was led by deacons.
Deacons are a gift to the church and a valuable asset to its mission.
By the end of this year, Lord willing our church will have a second elder join the team with me.
But we don't have any deacons yet.
So in our final point, let's consider: who should be a deacon?
In many churches, deacons are just the people that are good with a spreadsheet, good with tools, good at running events.
But like pastors, the qualifications to be a deacon are mainly about character, not gifting.
Let's break down the deacon qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:8-13.
First, deacons must have a good reputation.
1 Timothy 3:8, deacons likewise must be
dignified.
Verse 8 says “likewise” because it's connected to the previous verse about elders.
1 Timothy 3:7 said pastors… “must be well thought of by outsiders, so that [they] may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.”
That’s why this passage also says deacons must be proven blameless
Or as Acts 6:3 says, deacons must be “of good repute.”
This doesn’t mean a deacon has to be perfect.
But it does mean that in the eyes of both the church and the watching world, a potential deacon must be clear of “provable charges of sub-Christian belief or behavior.”
Non-Christian friends, we’re so glad you’re here.
I hope you’re noticing that God wants you to have a good experience of Christians, and especially church leaders.
Because when Christians live hypocritically, Christianity is less attractive, isn’t it?
Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement was Hindu but was greatly influenced by Jesus’ teachings on non-violence.
For a season, he even considered becoming a Christian.
He showed up to a church service in South Africa…
…but a white church leader made him leave because of his race.
This tragic incident forever stained his impression of Christianity.
He said: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
Leaders who are un-like Christ hinder the mission of the church… leaders who are like Christ advance it.
Second, deacons must not be a gossip.
1 Timothy 3:8 says deacons must not be double-tongued.
1 Timothy 3:10 says they must not be slanderers.
Flattery is saying to someone’s face what you’d never say behind their back…
…gossip is saying behind someone’s back what you’d never say to their face.
Remember deacons are the church’s shock absorbers.
Which means deacons are where gossip goes to die.
Think about Acts 6 when the Hellenists were complaining that the Hebrews were neglecting their widows.
If the deacons were gossips, they’d say… “oh yeah you’re so right those Hebrews just don’t understand…”
And then the church would have split… one church for the Greek speakers, another for the Hebrews.
Christianity would have become like every other religion that’s based on one nationality.
Third, a deacon must be trustworthy.
1 Timothy 3:8, a deacon must not be addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.
1 Timothy 3:10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.
Deacons are often responsible for church finances, and using church resources to help the poor.
Someone doing this must be not only trustworthy, but dependable and organized.
Earlier, I said deacon qualifications are about character, not gifting.
That’s true… but it's a little more complicated.
Matt Smethurst says… Character, though it is the main thing, is not quite everything. A godly member who regularly flakes out, or never returns emails, or always needs to be told what to do, is not yet a good fit for a deacon.
Fourth, deacons must be solid in the faith.
9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
Unlike elder, deacon is not an office of teaching and formal pastoral authority.
But being a deacon is not a-theological.
The suffering, the poor, and sick who deacons serve need someone that can give counsel from God’s Word.
One of the first deacons, Stephen, knew his way around the Bible.
In Acts 7, Stephen gives one of the best summaries of the Bible’s story ever recorded.
So just like elders, a recent convert is not yet qualified to be a deacon.
But neither is anyone who’s embarrassed by how Christianity contradicts modern sensibilities.
Fifth, deacons must have a healthy family life.
12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.
A negligent parent cannot be a good
deacon.
Family comes before ministry.
After I read v12, I went home and told my girls, “I love being a pastor, but I love being your dad even more.”
This church can get another pastor, but my girls can’t get another dad.
***
So those are the qualifications for deacons.
If you were with us the last two weeks, we said that while both men and women are gifted for ministry… the office of elder or pastor is reserved for qualified men.
So you might wonder… Can women serve as deacons?
Our answer is yes.
Very quickly… here’s three reasons.
First, 1 Timothy 3:11 is talking about female deacons.
11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.
The ESV says “wives” but the Japanese says 「この奉仕につく女の人も同じように」that is, “the women who take on this ministry.”
The Japanese translation reflects how many Bible scholars understand the original Greek… it's talking about female deacons.
Second, deacon is not an office of teaching or authority.
Two weeks ago, we talked about 1 Timothy 2:12, which says women are not to teach or to exercise authority with respect to the gathered church.
That’s a clear prohibition on women being pastors, but we have no equivalent verse for deacons.
Pastors must be able to teach, but deacons just need to have good theology.
Third, the church has always had female deacons.
There’s not a single example of any Christian church ordaining a female pastor until 1853, and the practice didn’t become widespread until after WWII.
However, female deacons have a LONG history.
Romans 16:1 says: I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant [diakonos, deacon] of the church…
And that’s why for 2,000 years great theologians like…
Origen… John Chrysostom… John Calvin… and… Charles Spurgeon have all affirmed female deacons.
***
1 Timothy 3:13 says: For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
To be a deacon, you need a good reputation, and great confidence in the Chrstian faith.
But serving as a deacon further increases your reputation and confidence in Jesus.
Why?
Think back to Jesus washing his disciples feet, the night before he was crucified.
John 13:3, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God…
The great people of the world aren’t known for serving others.
And Jesus is the greatest of them all!!!
John 13 says Jesus came from God, he’s going back to God, all things are in his hands…
But here’s what happens next…
John 13:4, [Jesus] rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
A good deacon reflects Jesus, the God who humbled himself to serve the unworthy.
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, the ultimate Deacon.
By grace through faith change us into people who serve like him.
Raise up godly men and women from this church family to be leading servants, deacons in your church.
We ask these things in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
