In it he said “The Holy Spirit is not a skeptic”...God gave us his Word to be understood.
—————————————————
There were two major figures during the Protestant Reformation.
Martin Luther, who you might be familiar with.
…and Desiderius Erasmus, who you’re probably not familiar with.
Erasmus was famous for his 1516 Greek New Testament.
He helped scholars understand the Bible in its original language.
He hoped his work would reform the corrupt Medieval Catholic Church.
But the result was far beyond what he imagined.
Martin Luther used the Greek New Testament to begin the Protestant Reformation.
At first, Luther and Erasmus seemed like allies.
But in time, it became clear their vision of what Christianity is… was radically different.
Everyone agreed the church was extremely corrupt.
But for Erasmus, only a moral reformation was needed.
He said, we just gotta go back to the moral teachings of Jesus and the corruption will be fixed.
For Erasmus, the Bible is ultimately un-clear: you can’t really know what it's saying.
So he disliked clearly defined doctrines.
He thought it's more important to ask questions than to get an answer.
For Luther, the root of the corruption was a false gospel.
The biblical gospel had become buried under centuries of tradition and superstition.
He argued the Medieval church’s teaching of salvation by faith PLUS good works lead not to greater morality… but more corruption.
But if you recover the biblical gospel of salvation by faith alone… people’s lives will TRULY change.
Erasmus didn’t like this at all.
He criticized Luther’s focus on doctrine.
Luther responded in his famous work The Bondage of the Will.
In it he said “The Holy Spirit is not a skeptic”...God gave us his Word to be understood.
So Christianity is not a set of interesting questions.
Christianity is a proclamation of historical facts… Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
It's about ASSERTIONS not QUESTIONS!
Or as Luther put it… Take away assertions and you take away Christianity.
…so who’s right… Erasmus or Luther?
Is Christianity about CREEDS or DEEDS?
To answer, let's turn to 1 Timothy 3:14-4:16.
Today, I wanna make the case that Christianity is mainly about what you believe, not what you do.
Yes, the Bible has moral commands.
But those commands only make sense in light of who God is and what Christ has done.
So in the spirit of Luther, I wanna make three assertions about gospel doctrine.
First, gospel doctrine has specific content (3:14-16)
Listen to what the apostle Paul writes to his protégé Timothy in 1 Timothy 3:14…
14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
Pillars uphold the roof of a building and keep it from collapsing.
In the same way, the living God preserves the truth of the gospel through his church.
The church exists to uphold the gospel… but it's also founded upon the gospel.
In Matthew 16, Jesus asked his disciples… “who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
The confession of Jesus Christ as the Son of God is the rock the church is built upon.
So you’re not part of the church because you were born in a Christian family.
You’re not part of the church just because you say you’re a Christian.
You’re part of the church only when you confess faith in Christ.
***
A church was once interviewing a man for membership.
But they were worried he didn’t understand the gospel.
So they asked: “What do you believe about the gospel?”
He said, “I believe what the church believes.”
They said, “Well, yes, but tell us… what does the church believe?”
He said, “The church believes… what I believe.”
They said, “Ok… so what do you and the church believe?”
He said, “I already told you…we believe the same thing!”
So whether or not you call yourself a Christian, I don’t wanna assume you know the gospel.
What’s the gospel?
…Paul tells us, v16.
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
This gospel summary is not original to Paul.
It was likely a popular creed that Paul expected Timothy to also know.
Let’s break down this gospel creed from v16.
And non-Christian friends… if you’re wondering what Christianity is, here’s a summary of the basics.
[Christ] was manifested in the flesh.
Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.
That is, in the person of Christ… GOD BECAME MAN.
John Calvin says…The difference between God and man is very great, and yet in Christ we see God's infinite glory joined to our polluted flesh so that the two can become one.
But [Christ] was also vindicated by the Spirit.
Jesus died on a cross, bearing God’s wrath against sin.
Three days later, he rose…
…which means every claim Jesus made: to be God, to forgive sins, and to judge the world was vindicated, proven true, when the Holy Spirit raised him from the dead.
The risen Christ was seen by angels.
Angels were the first to bear witness to Christ’s empty tomb… He is not here, but has risen!
And the 500 people who saw the risen Christ… proclaimed him among the nations, and he was believed on in the world.
Jesus was taken up in glory… and right now he sits at God’s right hand.
That’s the gospel… and here’s what it means for you, today, right now.
Repent…
…turn to God that your sins may be blotted out.
Believe…
…receive eternal life from Jesus as a free gift.
***
The gospel is a message about real, historical events.
Which means Christianity is fundamentally a religion of WORDS.
The ancient Romans mocked the early church as “people of the book.”
Roman religion had no theology, and no ethical code.
It was just rituals and traditions.
It was all about securing health and wealth from the gods.
Like the Romans, someone in Japan might say “Christianity is just a bunch of words…”
“How’s it gonna help me get a good job, get into a good school, or have good health?”
The answer is… it probably won’t!!!
We’re guilty as charged… Christianity makes a big deal about words.
Here’s why… we believe in the Living God… 1 Timothy 3:15.
And the Living God SPEAKS!
In creation, God spoke the universe into existence.
In salvation, God speaks… faith comes from hearing the Word of Christ.
Dead, false gods… DO NOT SPEAK.
But we treasure the Words of the Living God as bread from heaven that gives eternal life.
***
There’s a right way to use words and a wrong way.
We call this grammar… and the gospel has grammar too.
Let’s consider that in our 2nd assertion… gospel doctrine has defined boundaries (4:1-5).
For us modern people… that feels restrictive.
Like you gotta think for yourself right?!
…isn’t this exactly why religion is so dangerous?!
Steve Jobs reflects this attitude in his commencement speech at Stanford University.
He told the young graduates… Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart.
Jobs is right… the pressure of others’ opinions is dangerous.
But the solution… is NOT to follow your heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 says: the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.
You can’t trust what people say… AND you can’t trust what your own heart says.
Which is exactly WHY you need to look outside yourself to what GOD has revealed.
And whenever you look anywhere besides God’s Word for answers… you depart from the faith… 1 Timothy 4:1.
Sorry this is not in the Japanese, but notice the definite article THE faith.
Often, faith means a personal decision to trust in Jesus.
Here it means a defined body of truth… an agreed-upon set of doctrines.
If you don’t like that… let me re-frame it.
Many think of theology as an EXAM.
You gotta answer the questions right… or God will be super-duper mad.
But it's better to think of theology as a CAR.
And when you get gospel doctrine wrong, it's like taking the wheels off of your car…
You may call it “Christianity” …but it won’t have real power to change your life.
And here’s how the wheels were falling off in Timothy’s church.
4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons…
The teachings of demons?!
Surely this is gonna be something clearly immoral, something obviously ANTI-God… right?!
Wrong… the people believing the teachings of demons looked very sincere and religious.
1b some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
Paul’s talking about legalism… adding to God’s Word.
It's when religious people create their own rules which are easier than what God commands in his Word.
In Timothy's church, they were saying “if you’re REALLY serious about God, then you won’t get married… you won’t eat certain foods.”
But Paul says “that’s a denial of the goodness of God’s creation…”
1 Timothy 4:4… 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
Legalistic people can’t relax and enjoy the good things in life.
Because their identity is in morality, they always have to prove to themselves and others that they’re a good person.
The result is a joyless, uptight version of Christianity that’s not very attractive to the world.
***
Church, we must be on guard against adding to God’s Word.
In Jesus day, the Pharisees were putting man-made tradition on the same level as the Bible.
So Jesus warned them… you’re making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down.
God’s Word is our highest authority.
Tradition isn’t inherently bad…
The problem is when you begin to mistake human tradition for divine command…
…even when those traditions DIRECTLY contradict God’s revealed Word!
Our hearts naturally drift from the gospel.
So we have to always be going back to the Bible to reform the church.
***
As a church we wanna stay focused on the gospel, because it's the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
Which brings us to our last assertion… gospel doctrine has tangible value (4:6-16).
6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
If you ask the world… “how can I live a better life?”
They’ll point you to the self-help section… get more sleep, walk 10,000 steps, think positive.
Those aren’t bad things… the text says they’re “of some value.”
But if you want true life… the Bible says train yourself for godliness.
Godliness is of value in every way because it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
That value isn’t health and wealth…
… it's becoming like Jesus…
… it's knowing God!
Which… if you’re not like Jesus and you don’t know God… that sounds incredibly boring.
And it will always be that way unless you’re born again…
Because you can’t see God’s Kingdom or value what he values until… he opens your eyes.
But if you do know Jesus… how can you train yourself for godliness?
One way is to study theology.
People dislike the word “theology”...
But the English word “theology”, just means “words about God” THEO-LOGY.
And the godliness training program centers on “words about God.”
v6…being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed
The best way to be trained in the words of the faith is reading the Bible.
But two additional resources I’d recommend are…
The New City Catechism, which we’ve been reading together every Sunday…
…it's available for free in the back.
And also our church library… just across the hall where you can borrow any book you like for free.
The Barna Group found… committed Christians consume about 3000 hours of digital content a year.
Only 150 hours of that is Christian content.
That’s a 20-to-1 ratio.
Many Christians will say theology is boring… impractical… a waste of time…
…but then gladly spend 20x more time on worldly entertainment than the things of God.
Another way is to learn from the example of mature believers.
Paul tells Timothy: 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
A fool learns everything from personal experience.
But a wise person learns from wise people.
Still one more way is to prioritize the public reading and teaching of God’s Word.
Paul instructs Timothy: 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching… 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
The public reading and teaching of Scripture has always been central to the worship and mission of God’s people.
The early church was so relentless about teaching that the Jewish religious leaders complained in Acts 5:28… “you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching!”
We see this in the Old Testament, too.
Nehemiah 8:8… They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
Online sermons and personal Bible study are a huge blessing.
But don’t forget… during biblical times… and for most of church history, people didn’t have YouTube, they didn’t have their own Bible.
God's expectation for them is the same as us…
The primary place we’re to receive biblical teaching is our local church with real, flesh-and-blood people.
In this day and age, even for church-goers, there’s a NEW temptation.
A Christian recently told me, “I talk to Google Gemini about spiritual questions because I don’t have any friends.”
I don’t wanna be an AI doomer…
BUT letting AI be your spiritual guide instead of a pastor or a fellow Christian…
…or going to AI instead of God’s Word or PRAYER is extremely dangerous.
******
Take away assertions, and you take away Christianity.
I’ve been pushing this point hard because it's neglected.
But just so it's clear: I don’t think studying theology is the solution to all our problems
A pastor once said… “I spend half my time telling Christians to study doctrine and the other half telling them doctrine is not enough.”
Because the end goal of theology isn’t knowing about God… it's knowing God.
Just as a lover delights to learn more about his beloved… we delight in knowing the God who saved us.
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, eternal life is knowing you, the Only True God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Help us be a church that knows and loves the Word of the Lord.
But also… help us be a church that knows and loves you, the Lord of the Word.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
