1952年、レイ・ブラッドベリは「雷のような音（サウンドオブサンダー）」という短編小説を書きました。
物語の舞台は2055年。ある会社が、6500万年前にタイムトラベルして恐竜狩りの旅を提供しています。
旅行客たちは、歴史を変えてしまわないように、宙に浮かぶ道（写真）から決してそれることができません。なぜなら、たった一匹のネズミを殺すことでも、未来に壊滅的な影響を及ぼす可能性があるからです。
案内人はこう警告します。
「お前の足が一匹のネズミを踏みつけたら、その衝撃が地震のように時を越えて広がり、地球と人類の運命を根本から揺るがすかもしれない…ローマが七つの丘の上に築かれることもなくなるかもしれない…ピラミッドさえ崩れてしまうかもしれない。だから気をつけろ。道の上から決して降りるな！」
この「小さな変化が巨大な影響を引き起こす」という発想は、「バタフライ・エフェクト」と呼ばれます。多くの物語がこのテーマを扱うのは、私たちが人生の出来事が、——それが大きくても小さくても——偶然なのか、それとも大きな計画の一部なのか、自然と気になるからです。
喜びや悲しみを経験するとき、私たちはつい問わずにはいられません。「これはただの偶然？それとも、何か意味があって起こっているの？」と。
今日の聖書箇所ローマ人への手紙8章28〜39節は、この問いに対して明確な答えを示しています。
ローマ8章によると、「すべてのことには理由がある」のです。
偶然や運というものは存在しません。なぜなら、神様がすべてを支配しておられるからです。神様は起こるすべてのことを定めておられます。
イザヤ書45章6〜7節にはこう書かれています：わたしが主である。ほかにはいない。わたしは光を造り出し、闇を創造し、平和をつくり、わざわいを創造する。わたしは主、これらすべてを行う者。
神様は地震、パンデミック、戦争、経済崩壊、そして歴史全体において主権を持っておられます。
神様の支配はあまりにも完全で、光の筋の中で舞う何千という塵の粒子（スライド）でさえ、神様が定められた通りに動いているのです。
「すべての出来事は偶然ではなく、神の父なる御手から出ている」という聖書が教えるこの教理を摂理と呼びます。
神学者J.I.パッカーはこう書いています。「人は神の主権を議論のテーマにしてしまいがちですが、聖書ではそれを礼拝の理由として語っています。」
神様は「なぜ良い人に悪いことが起こるのか」を考察するためにローマ書8章を与えたのではありません。
焦点は「自由意志」と「神の主権」の議論にあるのではありません。
神様がローマ書8章をくださったのは、私たちがイエス様にあって慰めと喜びを得るためです。
私の日々の生活の中で、この「神の摂理」の教えほど、私の助けとなってきた聖書の真理はありません。私はもともと勇気のある人間ではなく、どちらかといえば心配性な性格です。
しかし聖書が語る神の摂理について学べば学ぶほど、不安から解放されていきました。神様がすべてを支配しておられると知ることは、恐れずにイエス様のために生きる力となるのです。
ジャン・カルヴァンはこう書いています。「神の摂理を知らないことは、すべての不幸の中で最も大きな不幸であり、神の摂理を知ることは、すべての幸福の中で最高のものである。」
神の摂理は、議論するための教理ではなく、心を休めるための枕なのです。
ではまず、神の摂理とは何なのかを理解していきたいと思います。
そして次に、神様が主権者であることが「良い知らせ」である4つの理由を考えていきます。
まず最初に、「摂理とは何か？」（28–32節）を見ていきましょう。
神を愛する人たち、すなわち、神のご計画にしたがって召された人たちのためには、すべてのことがともに働いて益となることを、私たちは知っています。
今日の聖書箇所を理解する鍵となるのが、この28節です。
28節は、「すべてのことはうまくいく」という、誰にでも当てはまる一般的な約束ではありません。
この約束は「神を愛する人たち」、つまりクリスチャンだけに与えられるものです。
そしてその約束は、「現在の人生が順調にいく」ということではありません。
むしろ「この地上での最も深い悲しみさえも、神様が天で最も大きな喜びに変えてくださる」という約束です。
ジョナサン・エドワーズはある説教の中で、クリスチャンには、三つのことが約束されていると語りました。
エドワーズは言いました。もしあなたがキリストのうちにあるなら...
悪いことは最終的に良いものに変えられる。
良いものは決してあなたから奪われない。
最も良いものは、これからやってくる。
そしてパウロは語ります。「神様が成し遂げてくださると私たちは知っています」と。
私たちが「感じている」でも、「思っている」でも、「願っている」でもなく、「知っている」、神様が私たちの永遠の益のために、すべてのことを働かせてくださると、私たちは知っているのです。
しかも「すべてのこと」です。神様は最悪の事態──たとえば失業、がん、流産、取り返しのつかない大失敗など──そのすべてを不思議な方法で用いて、来るべき世界でのあなたの人生をより輝かしく、より栄光あるものにしてくださいます。
これらの約束は、「神のご計画にしたがって召された人たち」に対するものです。
この箇所でパウロは6回にわたり、「〜の人たち」と表現し、ある特定の人々について語っています。
その人たちに対する神様の目的と計画について、29〜30節でさらに詳しく説明されています。
29 神は、あらかじめ知っている人たちを、御子のかたちと同じ姿にあらかじめ定められたのです。それは、多くの兄弟たちの中で御子が長子となるためです。30 神は、あらかじめ定めた人たちをさらに召し、召した人たちをさらに義と認め、義と認めた人たちにはさらに栄光をお与えになりました。
クリスチャンの方々は、おそらく両親や友人、職場の同僚など誰かがイエス様のことを話してくれて信仰を持つようになったと思います。Or maybe it was reading the Bible. あるいは聖書を読んだことがきっかけだったかもしれません。しかし、どのようにして信じるようになったとしても、この29〜30節が語るのは、あなたの救いには、あなたが実際に体験した以上のことが関わっていたということです。
この29〜30節の流れはよく「救いの黄金の連鎖」と呼ばれます。ここからわかるのは、救いの始まりから終わりまで、最終的な原因はすべて神ご自身にあるということです。誰かが天国に行く唯一の理由は、神様がその人を救うと決められたからです。
あなたがキリストを信じているなら、神様はこの世界ができる前から、あなたをあらかじめ知っておられ、愛しておられたとローマ8章は語っています。
神様はその愛のゆえに、あなたを救うとあらかじめ定め、信仰に召すために必要なすべての出来事を前もって整えておられました。
そして、あなたがイエス様を信じたとき、神様はあなたを義と認め、「無罪」と宣言し、あなたの罪を全て消し去ってくださいました。
しかし、こう思う人がいるかもしれません。「なるほど！だから私はクリスチャンになるのが難しいんだ。神様に選ばれていないからでしょ？」
早まらないでください。選びの教理は、信じている人を励ますためのものであって、まだ信じていない人を落胆させるためのものではありません。
もし本当にイエス様を信じているなら、それはテサロニケ人への手紙 第一 1章4–5節にあるように、あなたが選ばれているというしるしです。
しかし聖書は、神に選ばれているかどうかをまだ信じていない人に推測させるような教え方は一度もしていません。
聖書が信じていない人に対して語るメッセージは、使徒の働き16章31節にある通り、いつも同じです——「主イエスを信じなさい。そうすれば、あなたも...救われます。」
ところで、30節の最後のフレーズですが、「義と認めた人たちにはさらに栄光をお与えになりました。」という部分は少し不思議です。
栄光を与えられるというのは、信じる者が天国に辿り着き、罪や苦しみから解放される時のことを指します。
しかし、それは未来の出来事です。では、なぜパウロは過去形で「お与えになりました」と書いているのでしょうか？
文法を適当に使ったのでしょうか？
No. いいえ、そうではありません。
旧約聖書の預言者たちは、未来の出来事を過去形で語ることがよくありました。
なぜでしょうか？
なぜなら神様が「必ず起こる」と約束したことは、すでに起こったのと同じくらい確かなことだからです。
ここで神様が約束しているのは、今イエスにあって永遠のいのちを持つすべての人が、実際に、死後に天国でもイエス様と共に永遠のいのちを楽しむことになる、ということです。
パウロはピリピ人への手紙1章6節でも似たことを言っています。「あなたがたの間で良い働きを始められた方は、キリスト・イエスの日が来るまでにそれを完成させてくださると、私は確信しています。」
例えば、私があなたへのプレゼントに人生の全財産を使ったとします。そして「1時間ほどで家に持っていくよ」とメッセージを送ったとします。その1時間の間、あなたは「本当に来てくれるかな…？」と心配するでしょうか？
パウロも31節で同じ論理を使っています。
31 では、これらのことについて、どのように言えるでしょうか。神が私たちの味方であるなら、だれが私たちに敵対できるでしょう。私たちすべてのために、ご自分の御子さえも惜しむことなく死に渡された神が、どうして、御子とともにすべてのものを、私たちに恵んでくださらないことがあるでしょうか。
神のたった一人子であるイエス様は、永遠にわたって父なる神の喜びであり続けてきました。それでも神様は、イエス様を地上に送り、十字架で死なせ、罪人に対するご自身の怒りを負わせることを選ばれました。
32節は「より大きいものからより小さいものへの論法」です。
もし神様が私たちを救うために究極の代価を払ったのならば、私たちが確実に天国に行くことを保証するための追加の手間を惜しまれるでしょうか？
もし10億ドルのプレゼントをすでに買っていたら、それを配送する費用を惜しむでしょうか？
これで、摂理の教義の説明は終わりです。（28～32節）
聖書の中で、神の摂理ほど私たちの日々の生活に影響を与える教義はありません。
ここからは、摂理の教義の応用（33～39節）を考えてみましょう。
神の主権が良い知らせである理由4つを挙げます。
理由❶：神の主権はサタンの非難/訴えを黙らせる（33節）
33 だれが、神に選ばれた者たちを訴えるのですか。神が義と認めてくださるのです。
神の法廷では、すべての人類は罪のゆえに有罪とされ、永遠の死に値します。しかし、33節は、罪人がイエス様を信じた瞬間に、義と宣言されること、つまり正しいと宣言されることを思い出させてくれます。
それがいつも実感できるわけではありません。サタンや自分の良心はすぐに罪を責め立ててきます。
しかし、神様が主権をもって選んでくださったからこそ、誰も神に選ばれた人たちを罪に問うことも、「無罪」という判決をくつがえすこともできません。
アメリカの政治制度では、大統領には有罪判決を受けた犯罪者を赦免する権限があります。その赦免はその人が無罪だからではなく、あくまで慈悲の行為です。
大統領がオフィスで有罪者を赦免する行政命令に署名していると想像してみてください。その瞬間、見知らぬ人が入ってきて「でも彼らは有罪だ！罰を受けるべきだ！」と言ったらどうなるでしょうか？
大統領はこう答えるでしょう。「もちろん彼は有罪だ。しかし、私は自分の権限を用いて彼らに憐れみを示すことを選んだのだ。で、誰が君に、私に意見する権限を与えたのか？さあ、ここから出て行け！」
世の中も、自分の良心も、サタンもあなたを「有罪」と宣言するかもしれません。しかし、重要なのは、神様があなたを「無罪」と宣言されたということです。
さらに、神様は告発を沈黙させるだけでなく、罪の咎めを取り除きます。これが神の主権が良い知らせである二つ目の理由です。
理由❷：神の主権は罪の咎めを取り除く（34節）
34 だれが、私たちを罪ありとするのですか。死んでくださった方、いや、よみがえられた方であるキリスト・イエスが、神の右の座に着き、しかも私たちのために、とりなしていてくださるのです。
神の主権的なご計画の中で、イエス様は罪人の代わりに罪に定められました。
使徒の働き2章23節には、イエス様が「神が定めた計画と神の予知によって引き渡された」と書かれています。
十字架の上で、イエス様は罪に対する神の怒りをすべて受けられました。
だから、イエス様を信じる人は誰でも、どんな苦しみに直面したとしても「これは自分の罪への罰だ」と思う必要はありません。
私たちの受けるべき罰は、すべて2000年前にイエス様にくだされたからです。
福音は「カルマ」とは正反対のものです。
カルマは「自分のしたことの報いを自分で受ける」と語ります。
福音は「イエスがあなたの受けるべき報いを受けてくださった」と語ります。
これを聞く必要がある人がいるかわかりませんが、あなたの人生がうまくいっているか、いないかは、あなたと神様との関係を示すものではありません。
クリスチャンの皆さん、あなたの苦しみは神様があなたを見捨てた印ではありません。
イエス様が十字架の上で見捨てられたのは、あなたが決して見捨てられないためです。
牧師のH.B.チャールズはこう言いました。「神の愛をあなたの状況で測ってはいけない。血に染まった十字架と空の墓で測りなさい。」
ノンクリスチャンの皆さん、繁栄しているからと言って、神様があなたに対して喜んでおられるとは限りません。
この世での繁栄に目がくらんで、キリストに立ち返らなければ待ち受けている永遠の苦しみがあるという現実を見失わないでください。
神の主権が良い知らせである理由❸は、神の主権によって、私たちが恐れに支配されることを減らしてくれるからです（35–36節）。
35 だれが、私たちをキリストの愛から引き離すのですか。苦難ですか、苦悩ですか、迫害ですか、飢えですか、裸ですか、危険ですか、剣ですか。こう書かれています。「あなたのために、私たちは休みなく殺され、屠られる羊と見なされています。」
パウロはこの世的な危険を七つ挙げています。これは比喩ではなく、実際にローマ帝国の迫害の下で生きたパウロの読者たちが実際に経験したものでした。
しかしパウロは「ローマの剣があなたの首を胴体から切り離すことはできても、キリストの愛からあなたを引き離すことはできない」と語ります。そして実際に、これはパウロ自身の身に起こりました。パウロは西暦66年、ローマ皇帝ネロによって斬首されたました。
信仰者は、神様があらゆる状況を——たとえそれが命の危険にさらされる迫害であっても——その御手の中に収めておられるという確かな確信を持つことができます。
スコットランドの宣教師ジョン・ペイトンは、現在のバヌアツにあたる場所で聖書を翻訳し、教会を開拓しました。
キリスト教が広まる以前、その土地の部族は人食いの習慣があり、部族同士の争いも絶えませんでした。
ペイトンが宣教を始めて4年ほど経った頃、疫病が発生しました。迷信深い村人たちは「神々がキリストのメッセージに対して怒っている」と思い込み、ペイトンを責め立てました。
ある時には、武器を持った何百人もの男たちに取り囲まれ、「誰が最初に彼を殺すか」と口論になりました。
ペイトンはその当時、どのようにイエス様に祈り求めたかを振り返っています。
「私の心は主イエスに向かって高く上がりました。イエス様がこのすべてを見守っておられるのを感じました。神様からの波のように平安が私に戻ってきました。私は『主の働きが私のうちで終わるまでは、自分は不死身なのだ』と悟ったのです。天からの声のように確信が与えられました——天と地においてすべての権威を持っておられるイエス・キリストがの許可なしに、一発の銃弾も、一撃の棍棒も、一本の槍も、一本の矢も、石投げの石さえも、私を傷つけることはないと。」
奇跡的に、ペイトンが祈っているその時、商船が現れ、彼はその船に乗って脱出することができました。
イエス様のご計画があなたの人生で終わるまでは、あなたは不死身です。
だから、人生全てをイエス様のための宣教旅行のように生きることができるのです。
「私はただ、できるだけ多くの人を一緒に連れて天国にたどり着きたいだけなんです。」と。
神様の主権は、私たちを危険から守るだけではなく、永遠に神の愛の中に保ってくださいます。
なぜ神の主権は良い知らせなのでしょうか？
理由 ❹ 神の主権は、信仰が最後まで守られることを保証しているからです（37–39節）
37 しかし、これらすべてにおいても、私たちを愛してくださった方によって、私たちは圧倒的な勝利者です。38 私はこう確信しています。死も、いのちも、御使いたちも、支配者たちも、今あるものも、後に来るものも、力あるものも、39 高いところにあるものも、深いところにあるものも、そのほかのどんな被造物も、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある神の愛から、私たちを引き離すことはできません。
パウロは先ほど7つの危険を挙げましたが、それだけでは足りないかのように、38〜39節でさらに10の危険を挙げています。
でもこの「試合のスコア」は 0対17で、勝者は神様の愛です。
パウロはここで、あらゆる言葉の限界を押し広げながら、「キリストの愛から私たちを引き離すものが何かあるのか？」と探っています。そして最後に、まるで「念のために言っておこう」とでも言うように、「そのほかのどんな被造物も、私たちをキリストの愛から引き離すことはできない」と言い切ります。
この箇所が教えているのは、真にキリストを信じる者は、決して完全に、また最終的に、キリストから離れることはないということです。なぜなら、神ご自身が、その力によって最後まで私たちを守り通してくださるからです。
つまり、もしあなたがキリストにあるなら、天国ではさらに幸せになるでしょう。でも、「今この瞬間」あなたが受けている救いの確かさは、天にいるときと何一つ変わらないのです。
でもこう言う人がいるかもしれません。「そんなうまい話があるの？パウロは『何ものもキリストの愛から私たちを引き離せない』って言ってるけど、自分自身でなら引き離せるんじゃないの？」
でも、私たち自身も造られた存在ですよね？
パウロが「そのほかのどんな被造物も」と言うとき、当然私たち自身も含まれているはずです。
もしあなた自身が自分の力でキリストから離れられるとしたら、この箇所の約束はすべて無意味になってしまいます！
なぜなら、救いにとって最大の脅威は、外の敵ではなく「自分自身」だからです。
そしてもし私たちの救いが、最終的に「私たちがどれだけキリストをつかまっていられるか」にかかっているならば、
私たちは10回中10回、失敗するでしょう。
ある牧師がこう言いました。「もしあなたが救いを失うことができるとしたら…実際に失ってしまうでしょう」
けれど今朝の良い知らせは...
あなたに全てを支配する力はないということ。
悪魔にも全てを支配する力はないということ。
死にも全てを支配する力はないということ。
神様が全てを支配しておられるということ。そして、このことを心の底から信じることほど、あなたの人生は変えるものはないということです。
最後に、皆さんに一つ質問をしたいと思います。
人生で最も辛い時期、あなたは何を頼りにしますか？
この間のことですが、私の長女ハイジが重い喘息の発作を起こし、入院しました。病院での最初の夜は、私の人生で最もつらい夜の一つでした。正直に言うと、神様の善さを疑う思いが心の中に湧き上がる瞬間がありました。
私は家庭内で、ハイジが聖書についての質問と答えを暗記できるように「ハイジクエスチョン」という時間を取っています。
ハイジのお気に入りの質問は「イエス様はどれくらいあなたのことを愛しているの？」です。
その答えは「こーんなに！」と、両腕を広げてイエス様が十字架にかかっている姿を表します。
ハイジの容態が落ち着いた後、私は病室でハイジと並んで横になっていました。ハイジは柵で囲まれたベッドに寝かされ、点滴や酸素、いくつものモニターにつながれていました。
私はハイジに尋ねました。「イエス様はどれくらいあなたのことを愛してるの？」
数分前まで泣き叫んでいたハイジは、腕にたくさんのチューブをつけたまま、両腕を精いっぱい広げて、「こ〜〜〜んなに！」と叫びました。
私の小さな娘には、「なぜ悪いことが起こるのか」という哲学的な質問はわかりません。
でも、彼女はこれだけは知っています。人生がどんなに苦しくても、イエス様は変わらず自分を愛しておられるということを。
だから、神様の愛をあなたの「状況」で測らないでください。
神様の愛を測るのは、血潮に染まった十字架と、空っぽの墓です。
In 1952, Ray Bradbury wrote a short story called A Sound of Thunder.
The year is 2055, and a company offers trips 65 million years into the past to hunt dinosaurs. Travelers must stay on a levitating path (picture) to avoid changing history, because even killing a single mouse could cause catastrophic changes in the future.
One guide warns, The stomp of your foot, on one mouse, could start an earthquake, the effects of which could shake our earth and destinies down through Time, to their very foundations… Perhaps Rome never rises on its seven hills…Step on a mouse and you crush the Pyramids… So be careful. Stay on the Path. Never step off!
This concept—that small changes can have huge effects—is called the Butterfly Effect. Many stories explore it because we naturally wonder whether the events of our lives, big or small, are random or part of a larger plan. When we experience joy or tragedy, we can’t help but ask: are these just coincidences—or does everything happen for a reason?
In our text for this morning, Romans 8:28-39, we see a clear answer. According to Romans 8, yes, everything does happen for a reason.
There’s no such thing as coincidence or chance because God controls everything. God ordains whatsoever comes to pass.
Isaiah 45:6-7 says: I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.
God is sovereign over earthquakes, pandemics, wars, economic crashes, and the entire course of history.
God’s control over everything is so total that even something as small as the thousands of dust particles suspended in a sunbeam (slide) move exactly as God decides they will.
The Bible’s teaching that everything that happens comes not by chance but from God’s fatherly hand is called providence.
Theologian JI Packer writes: “Men treat God's sovereignty as a theme for controversy, but in Scripture it is a matter for worship.”
God didn’t give us Romans 8 to speculate on why bad things happen to good people.
The point isn’t to debate free will vs God’s sovereignty.
God gave us Romans 8 for our comfort and joy in Jesus.
No Biblical truth has helped me more in my daily life than the doctrine of God’s providence. I’m not a naturally courageous person–I naturally tend to be an anxious person.
But the more I’ve studied what the Bible says about God’s providence, the more I’ve been set free from anxiety. Knowing that God controls everything has helped me live for Jesus without fear.
John Calvin writes: “Ignorance of Providence is the greatest of all miseries, and the knowledge of it the highest happiness.”
God’s providence is not a doctrine to debate, it's a pillow to rest on.
So let’s first try to understand God’s providence.
Then, let's consider four reasons it's good news that God is sovereign.
First, what is providence? (28-32)
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
This verse is the key to understanding this whole passage.
Verse 28 isn’t a general promise to everyone that everything will be ok.
This promise is only for those who love God, that is Christians.
And the promise is not that your present life will go well.
It's that God will turn your deepest earthly sorrows into your greatest heavenly joys.
Jonathan Edwards once preached a sermon where he said three things are promised to a Christian.
Edwards said, if you’re in Christ…
Your bad things will turn out for good.
Your good things can never be taken away from you.
Your best things are yet to come.
And Paul says, we know God will do this. Not we feel, or we think, or we hope God will, we know God will work all things together for our eternal good.
Don’t miss that it's all things, either. God can take even your worst fears–losing your job, cancer, miscarriages, catastrophic moral failures–and in a mysterious way, use them to make your life in the world to come that much brighter and more glorious.
These promises belong to those who are called according to [God’s] purpose.
Six times in this passage, Paul refers to 人たち、a certain group of people — “those who… [blank].”
We learn more about God’s purpose, or plan for them, in verses 29–30.
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
If you're a Christian, you probably came to faith through your parents, friends, or coworkers telling you about Jesus. Or maybe it was reading the Bible. However you came to Christ, v29-30 says far more was involved in your salvation than what you personally experienced.
This sequence in v29-30 has often been called the Golden Chain of Salvation. What we learn here is that from beginning to end, God is the ultimate cause of salvation. The only reason anyone ends up in heaven is because God decided they would.
If you believe in Christ, Romans 8 says before God created the stars, he foreknew you and loved you.
In love, he predestined to save you and pre-determined all the events that would have to take place in order to call you to faith.
When you believed in Jesus, he justified you, he declared you “not guilty” and wiped away all your sins.
But you say “aha! So that’s why I have a hard time believing Christianity, it's because I’m not chosen!”
Not so fast. The doctrine of election is meant to encourage those who do believe, not discourage those who do not yet believe.
If you have true faith in Jesus, it's a sign you’ve been chosen, as 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 teaches.
But the Bible never once tells non-Christians to speculate about whether they’re chosen by God.
To non-Christians, the Bible’s invitation is always what Acts 16:31 says “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
Now the last phrase in v30 is kinda strange, those whom he justified he also glorified.
Being glorified is what happens when a believer enters heaven and is set free from sin and suffering.
But that’s a future event…so why does Paul use the past tense, “glorified?”
Like is he just being sloppy with grammar here?
No.
The Old Testament prophets would often speak of God’s prediction of a future event in the past tense.
Why?
Because when God promises something will happen, it's as good as done.
And what God promises here is that all who have eternal life in Jesus now, will actually make it to heaven to enjoy eternal life with Jesus when they die.
As Paul says elsewhere in Philippians 1:6, “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
Let’s say I spent my entire life savings on a present for you.
I send you a message saying I’ll bring it to your house in about one hour.
During that hour, would you worry that I wouldn’t show up to bring you your present?
Paul’s uses the same logic in v31.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
Jesus, the Son of God, has been the delight of God the Father for all eternity. And yet God chose to send him to earth to die on a cross and bear his wrath against sinners.
V32 is an argument of greater to lesser.
If God paid the ultimate price to save us, why would he spare any further expense to ensure we make it to heaven to enjoy that salvation?
If you spent a billion dollars on a present, would you not pay to have it shipped?
So that’s the doctrine of providence explained (v28-32).
No other doctrine in Scripture will change your daily life more than God’s providence. So now let’s consider the doctrine of providence applied (v33-39).
Here’s four reasons God’s sovereignty is good news.
Reason #1: God’s sovereignty silences Satan’s accusation (33)
33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
In God’s courtroom, all humanity stands condemned for sin, deserving everlasting death. But v33 reminds us that sinners are declared righteous the moment they trust in Jesus.
It doesn’t always feel that way— Satan and our own conscience are quick to accuse us of sin.
But we’re not righteous because we feel righteous, we’re righteous because God sovereignly declared us righteous.
Because of God’s sovereign choice, no one can bring a charge against God’s elect, no one can overturn God’s verdict about his chosen people.
In the American political system, the president has the authority to pardon convicted criminals. The pardon isn’t because the person is innocent—it’s an act of mercy.
Imagine the president in their office signing an executive order to pardon a guilty person.
What a spectacle it would be if a random person walked in and said “but they’re guilty! They deserve to be punished!”
The president would say “Duh! Of course they’re guilty. But I’ve chosen to use my power to show them mercy. And who gave you the authority to tell me otherwise? Get this guy outta here!”
The world, your conscience, and the Devil may declare you “guilty” — but all that matters is that God has declared you “innocent.”
But not only does God silence accusation, he removes condemnation, which brings us to our next reason God’s sovereignty is good news.
Reason #2: God’s sovereignty removes sin’s condemnation (34)
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
In the sovereign plan of God, Jesus was condemned in the place of sinners. Acts 2:23 says Jesus was “delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.”
On the cross, Jesus took the wrath of God against sin.
So anyone who believes in Jesus can know that whatever suffering they face, it's not a punishment from God because of their sins. All our punishment fell on Jesus 2,000 years ago.
The gospel is the anti-karma.
Karma says “you get what you deserve.”
The gospel says “Jesus got what you deserve.”
So I don’t know who needs to hear this, but: how good or bad your life is going tells you nothing about where you stand with God.
Christian, suffering doesn’t mean God has forsaken you.
Jesus was forsaken on the cross so that you never would be.
HB Charles, a pastor says, “Don’t measure the love of God by your circumstances. Measure it by the bloody cross and the empty tomb.”
Non-Christian, prosperity doesn’t mean God is pleased with you.
Don’t let worldly prosperity blind you to the reality of eternal suffering that awaits unless you turn to Christ.
Reason #3 that God’s sovereignty is good news: it lessens fear’s domination (35-36).
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
Paul lists seven worldly dangers. This isn’t a metaphor, this was the actual experience of Paul’s Christian readers under persecution from the Roman empire.
But Paul says, a Roman sword may separate your head from your body, but it can’t separate you from the love of Christ. And in Paul's case, that ended up being literally true— he would end up being beheaded by the Roman Emperor Nero in 66 AD.
Believers can have rock solid confidence that God holds every circumstance, even deadly persecution, in the palm of his hand.
Christians who believe God is sovereign over all things, are willing to die for the spread of the gospel to all peoples.
John Paton was a Scottish missionary who translated the Bible and planted churches in what is now Vanuatu.
Before Christianity, the tribes there were cannibals and constantly at war.
Four years into Paton’s mission, a pandemic struck the tribe. Superstitious villagers blamed Paton, claiming their gods were angry about the Christian message.
At one point, he was surrounded by hundreds of men with weapons, arguing among themselves who would be the first to strike.
Paton recalls how he cried out to Jesus in prayer.
My heart rose up to the Lord Jesus; I saw him watching all the scene. My peace came back to me like a wave from God. I realized that I was immortal till my Master’s work with me was done. The assurance came to me, as if a voice out of Heaven had spoken, that not a musket would be fired to wound me, not a club prevail to strike me, not a spear leave the hand in which it was held vibrating to be thrown, not an arrow leave the bow, or a killing stone the fingers, without the permission of Jesus Christ, who has all power in Heaven and on Earth.
Miraculously, as Paton was praying, his prayer was answered and a merchant ship showed up on which he was able to escape.
You’re immortal till Jesus’ work with you is done.
If you understand this, you can treat your whole life like it's just a mission trip for Jesus.
Like I just want to make it to heaven and take as many people with me as I can.
God’s sovereignty doesn’t just protect you from danger—it keeps you in his love forever.
Why is God’s sovereignty good news?
Reason #4 God’s sovereignty secures faith’s preservation (37-39).
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
As if the 7 dangers weren’t enough, Paul lists another 10 dangers in v38-39.
But the score of this game is 0-17, with God’s love as the winner.
Paul is stretching the limits of language here, trying to see if there’s any possible thing that could separate a Christian from the love of Christ. And at the end he’s like, just in case I forgot something… there's not anything else in all creation that is able to separate you from Christ.
This passage teaches that those with true faith in Christ will never totally nor finally fall away from faith in Christ because God will preserve them until the end by his power. This means that if you’re in Christ, you’ll be happier in heaven, but you won’t be any more secure than you are right now.
But you object: “Isn’t this too good to be true? Paul says nothing in creation can separate you from Jesus…but you can separate yourself from Jesus!”
But aren’t you created?
Don’t you think when Paul says nor anything else in all creation can separate us from Christ, he’s assuming that includes you?
If you can separate yourself from Christ, all the promises of this text are meaningless!
Because the biggest danger to your salvation is you.
And if it's ultimately up to us to hang on to Jesus, we will fail 10 out of 10 times.
As one pastor put it: “if you could lose your salvation… you would.”
The good news this morning is that…
You are not sovereign.
The Devil is not sovereign.
Death is not sovereign.
God is sovereign, and nothing will change your life more than believing that with every fiber of your being.
So as we close, I want to leave you with a question.
In the darkest hours of your life, what do you have to hold onto?
The other week, my oldest daughter Heidi had a severe asthma attack and was hospitalized. The first night with her in the hospital was one of the hardest nights of my life. Just to be completely honest with you there were times where I felt doubts about God’s goodness rising in my heart.
We do something we call “Heidi questions” where I have her memorize questions and answers about the Bible.
Her favorite one is “how much does Jesus love you?”
The answer is “thiiiiiissss much” and you hold out your arms to represent Jesus hanging on a cross.
After her condition stabilized, we were both laying in her hospital room. She was in this horrible bed/cage like thing and hooked up to an IV, oxygen, and a bunch of monitors.
I asked Heidi “how much does Jesus love you?”
Heidi, who had been screaming and crying in pain just minutes before, held up her little arms all covered in wires, and shouted “thiiiiiiiss much.”
My sweet little girl doesn’t understand philosophical questions about why bad things happen.
But she does know that even when life is hard, Jesus still loves her.
Don’t measure God’s love for you by your circumstances.
Measure God’s love for you by the bloody cross and the empty tomb.
