現代の人々にとって、「天使と悪魔」を信じるなんて、まるで科学以前の時代に置き去りにされた考えのように、笑い話のように聞こえるかもしれません。
その理由のひとつは―-これまで取り上げてきたどんなトピックよりも――私たちの「天使と悪魔」に対するイメージが、映画によって形作られているからだと思います。
多くの場合、私たちの天使と悪魔に関する神学は、聖書からというよりも、『天使にラブ・ソングを…』や『トムとジェリー』から形作られています。
「フォークを持ち、角がついた赤い小さな悪魔」や「白いガウンを着た翼を持つ、私たちの目には見えない人たち」なんて信じられない、そう言う人もいると思います。
実は、クリスチャンである私も、それには同意します。
では、聖書は、天使と悪魔について何と言っているのでしょうか？
実は――それほど多くは語っていません。
しかし、詩篇148篇2節やヘブル人への手紙1章14節などからわかることがあります。\
天使は、神によって造られた知的で霊的な存在であり、神を礼拝し、神の民に仕えるために存在しているということです。
言い換えると、神様はこの宇宙を「スタッフチーム」をかかえ運営しておられるということです。
そして、人間が神様に反逆したように、一部の天使もまた神様に背きました。
しかし人間とは違い、罪を犯した天使たちに「２度目のチャンス」は与えられませんでした。
ペテロの手紙 第二 2:4にはこう書かれています。「神は、罪を犯した御使いたちを放置せず、地獄に投げ入れ、暗闇の縄目につないで、さばきの日まで閉じ込められました。」
創世記は時期を明確にはしていませんが、天使の創造と堕落は、創世記3章1節――つまり人間の堕落の前――に起こったと考えられています。
その時点で、私たちは堕落した天使たちの指導者であるサタン、またの名を悪魔と呼ばれる存在に出会います。
聖書が天使や悪魔について教える内容は、「知る必要がある範囲」に限られています。
また知恵をもって、神様は私たちが「天使」よりもむしろ「悪霊」、とくに「悪魔」について多く知る必要があると定められました。
ということで、神様が私たちにサタンについて知ってほしいことを見つけるために、悪魔とその策略について最も詳しく描かれているルカの福音書4章1〜13節を見ていきましょう。そこには、悪魔によって荒野で試みを受けるイエス様の姿が描かれています。イエス様が受けた誘惑は、神の子として受肉された方に特有のものなので私たちが受けるサタンからの誘惑とは違うものではありますが、イエス様がどのように霊的な戦いに臨まれたかから、私たちは多く学ぶことができます。
「サタンと悪霊」というテーマは重く感じるかもしれませんが、思いがけない励ましも見いだすと思います。
なぜなら、誘惑や苦しみの背後に霊的な悪の働きがあると考えるとき、それは、“ああ、やっぱり自分がクリスチャンとして感じている霊的な戦いは本物なんだ”と気づかせてくれるものだからです。
今日この場所を出るとき、皆さんが励まされて出ていくこと、また同時に、「聖なる警戒心」も持って出ていくことを願っています。
誰も逃れることのできない、目に見えない霊的な戦いが、絶えず起こっています。
そして、ケヴィン・デヨング牧師が言うように、
「霊的な戦いの50%は、ただ悪魔の存在を思い出すことにある」のです。
私たちの敵である悪魔は、神様よりはるかに弱いですが、私たちよりはるかに強い存在です。
黙示録で「古い蛇」と呼ばれるこの悪魔は、人間の本性よく知っています。彼には何千年もの経験があり、私たち一人ひとりの弱点をよく知っているのです。
もし悪魔がイエス様を攻撃することを恐れなかったのならば、あなたを攻撃することも恐れないでしょう。
孫子が『兵法』の中でこう書いています。「敵を知り己を知れば百戦殆からず」
なので私たちも、ルカの福音書4章1〜13節のイエス様とサタンの戦いを学び、悪魔の3つの策略にどう応答すべきかを考えていきたいと思います。 悪魔の策略①：非難（1〜4節）
さて、イエスは聖霊に満ちてヨルダンから帰られた。そして御霊によって荒野に導かれ、四十日間、悪魔の試みを受けられた。
ちょっと不思議ですよね。どうして聖霊がイエス様を、悪魔に誘惑される場所へ導かれたのでしょうか？
その答えを知るために、聖書全体の物語の中での、この箇所の立ち位置を見てみましょう。
聖書の最初の書物である『創世記』で、神様はアダムとエバをエデンの園に置き、「そこを耕させ、また守らせ」るように命じられました。神様のただ一つの条件は、「善悪の知識の木からは、食べてはならない」というものでした。けれども、悪魔はアダムとエバを神に背くように誘惑し、その実を食べさせてしまいました。
それから、２番目〜５番目の書物である『出エジプト記』〜『申命記』にかけて、神の民イスラエルはエジプトの奴隷状態から解放されましたが、不信仰のゆえに荒野で四十年間さまよいました。
そして今、ルカの福音書4章では、イエス様が、神の民が失敗したところで完全に成功される「新しいアダム」「真のイスラエル」として登場します。
アダムは「園」で誘惑され、イエス様は「荒野」で誘惑されました。
イスラエルは四十年の試練を受け、イエス様は四十日の試練を受けられました。
イエス様は神の民の代表として、悪魔の誘惑に完全に打ち勝たれたということです。
なぜこれが重要なのでしょうか？
なぜなら聖書によると、人類はみな「最初のアダム」か「最後のアダム」か、どちらかによって代表されているからです。
ローマ人への手紙 5:19 - すなわち、ちょうど一人の人の不従順によって多くの人が罪人とされたのと同様に、一人の従順によって多くの人が義人とされるのです。
コリント人への手紙 第一 15:22 - アダムにあってすべての人が死んでいるように、キリストにあってすべての人が生かされるのです。
あなたは「アダム」のうちに、それとも「キリスト」のうちにいるでしょうか？
イエス様を信じているなら、キリストが成し遂げられたことは、あなたのためのものになります。キリストの従順によって、あなたが神様の御前で正しい者、義なる者とされるということです。
しかし、イエス様を信じていないなら、アダムが失敗したことがあなたにも当てはめられます。アダムの不従順によって、あなたは神様の御前で罪人とされるということです。
生まれながらにして、すべての人は「最初のアダム」のうちにあります。「しかし、恵みによって、だれでも「最後のアダム（キリスト）」のうちに入ることができるのです。
3節を見てみましょう。
そこで、悪魔はイエスに言った。「あなたが神の子なら、この石に、パンになるように命じなさい。」
ルカの物語の中で、このすぐ前の場面では、イエス様がバプテスマを受けて、神がイエス様を「わたしの愛する子」と宣言されました。
ところがその直後、サタンは神が語られたイエス様のアイデンティティを否定しようとします。
これはサタンの戦術のひとつで、「非難/告発」と呼ばれるものです。告発とは、サタンが信じる者たちに、「その罪のゆえに、神はお前を愛していない、赦していない、受け入れていない」と思い込ませようとすることです。
サタンの狙いは、クリスチャンの心を罪悪感、恥、そして罪のとがめで満たすことです。
そして何よりも、キリストの十字架での死が私たちの罪を完全に覆うには「足りない」と疑わせることです。
ここでサタンは、イエス様にご自分のアイデンティティと神の愛を疑わせようとしているのです。
イエス様はどう応答されたでしょうか？
イエスは悪魔に答えられた。「『人はパンだけで生きるのではない』と書いてある。」
ここでイエス様は旧約聖書の申命記8章3節を引用しています。イエス様の時代の人々は聖書にとても親しんでいたので、一節の一部を引用するだけで、その残りをすぐに思い出すことができました。
その全文には、こう書かれています。「人はパンだけで生きるのではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つのことばで生きる」
神の口からイエス様が最後に聞いた言葉は「あなたはわたしの愛する子。わたしはあなたを喜ぶ。」でした。
そして、サタンの口からイエス様が最初に聞いた言葉は「あなたが神の子なら」でした。
サタンに抵抗するため、イエス様は洗礼のときに神様がご自身に語られた言葉を思い出されました。
なぜなら、神の口から出るすべての言葉にしがみつくことが、悪魔の告発を沈黙させる方法だからです。神の御言葉だけがいのちを与えてくれるものです。そして神の御言葉が「あなたはキリストにあって赦され、受け入れられ、愛されている」と宣言するとき、それがすべての結論です。
では、自分の罪のせいで罪悪感や恥で押しつぶされそうになるとき、どうすればよいのでしょうか？
3つ提案があります。
1つ目は、罪の確信と告発の違いを見分けることです。
もしすでに告白して悔い改めた過去の罪について、いまだに罪悪感を感じているなら――それは悪魔の告発です。Ignore it! 無視しましょう！
もし今も告白していない現在の罪について罪悪感を感じているなら――それは聖霊の確信です。応答しましょう！
2つ目は、神様の約束を繰り返し思い出すことです。
エペソ6章には、悪魔との戦いにおいて私たちが持つ唯一の攻撃的な武器は「御霊の剣」、すなわち神のことばだと書かれています。だからこそ、サタンが語るたびにイエス様は御言葉で応答されました。
2018年、私は罪悪感に押しつぶされ、神様の愛を疑うような時期を過ごしました。そのとき私は、7～8節の聖書箇所を印刷しました。 そのうちの一つが、ローマ人への手紙8章1節でした。:こういうわけで、今や、キリスト・イエスにある者が罪に定められることは決してありません。
私はその聖書箇所を職場のデスクの壁に貼りました。疑いや不安が心に忍び寄るたびに、その御言葉を見上げて読みました。すると、少しずつ罪悪感の霧が晴れていきました。
3つ目は、サタンは私たちの罪については正しいけれど、私たちの救い主については間違っていることを思い出すことです。
プロテスタントの宗教改革者マルティン・ルターが、絶望していた若いクリスチャンに宛てて次のように励ましました。
親愛なるジェロームへ...
悪魔があなたの罪を突きつけ、「お前は死と地獄に値する」と責め立てるとき、こう言い返しなさい。：
「確かに、私は死と地獄に値します。
それがどうしましたか？
だからといって、私は永遠の滅びに定められるのでしょうか？
決してそんなことはありません。
私のために苦しみ、私の代わりに償いを成し遂げてくださった方を私は知っています。その方の名はイエス・キリスト、神の御子です。
その方がおられるところに、私も共にいるのです。」

悪魔の戦略①：告発 でした。どうやって抵抗するのか？ 御霊の剣――神の御言葉によってです。
それでは次に、悪魔の戦略②：誘惑（5–8節） を見ていきましょう。
すると悪魔はイエスを高いところに連れて行き、一瞬のうちに世界のすべての国々を見せて、こう言った。「このような、国々の権力と栄光をすべてあなたにあげよう。それは私に任されていて、だれでも私が望む人にあげるのだから。
だから、もしあなたが私の前にひれ伏すなら、すべてがあなたのものとなる。」
イエスは悪魔に答えられた。「『あなたの神である主を礼拝しなさい。主にのみ仕えなさい』と書いてある。」
ここは、そわそわする聖書箇所ですよね。
「一体サタンにはどれほどの力があるのだろう？」と疑問に思う人もいるでしょう。
サタンは本当に世界のすべての国々を支配しているのでしょうか？
それとも、ただ嘘をついているだけなのでしょうか？
答えは――「はい、そして、いいえ」です。
「はい」、というのは、もしサタンに実際の権威がまったくなかったなら、これはイエス様にとって本当の誘惑にはならなかったはずだからです。
実際、第一ヨハネの手紙5章19節には「世全体は悪い者の支配下にある」と書いてあります。
でも、「いいえ」、というのは、十字架においてイエス様がサタンに勝利し、その働きを大きく打ち砕かれたからです。
コロサイ人への手紙２章には、イエス様によって「この罪の証書は、キリストの十字架と共に釘づけにされて無効となったのです。 こうして神は、罪を犯したあなたがたを責め立てるサタンの力をくじかれました。そして、十字架上でのキリストの勝利を、公然と示されたのです。」と書かれています。
だから、イエス様はサタンについて語るとき、マルコの福音書3章27節で次のように言われました。
まず強い者を縛り上げなければ、だれも、強い者の家に入って、家財を略奪することはできません。縛り上げれば、その家を略奪できます。
旧約聖書の時代、サタンは諸国の民を欺いていました。イスラエル以外のほとんどの人は偽りの神々を拝んでいました。
しかし、今ではキリストが来られたことで、「強い者」であるサタンは縛り上げられました。そして世界中で、人々が闇の支配からキリストの御国へと移されていく中で、イエス様はサタンの所有物を奪い返しておられます。
サタンはリードにつながれた犬のような存在です。
神様が許す範囲までしか動くことができません。サタンが悪巧みするすべてを、神様は善いことのために変えて用いてくれます。
でも、こう思う人がいるかもしれません。
「それってちょっと矛盾してない？ なぜサタンはそんな状況でも動けるの？」
第二次世界大戦の終わりごろ、ヒトラーはバルジの戦いを仕掛けました。
1944年の終わりに、ヒトラーは50万人のドイツ兵をフランスの西部戦線に送り込み、一時的に多くの領地を奪い返しました。
それは返り咲きのように見えました...が、実際には違いました。
その数か月前のノルマンディー上陸作戦によって、戦局の流れはすでに完全に連合軍側に傾いていました。ヒトラーは戦争に敗れつつあり、この戦いに負けるとわかっていながらも最後まで抵抗しようとヒトラーなりの「もがき」でした。
今、サタンがしているのもまさにそれです。サタンは教会とあなたに向かって、持てるすべての力を投げつけています。
しかし、サタンの終焉はキリストの十字架によってすでに決定しています。
サタンがイエス様を誘惑した内容には、興味深い点があります。
悪魔はイエス様に言いました。「このような、国々の権力と栄光をすべてあなたにあげよう。それは私に任されていて、だれでも私が望む人にあげるのだから。
だから、もしあなたが私の前にひれ伏すなら、すべてがあなたのものとなる。」
サタンは、十字架のない王冠をイエス様に差し出しました。悪魔は、イエス様にへりくだることも、罪人の友となることもない、ローマのような王国を築くよう誘惑したということです。
これは巧妙な誘惑でした。権威そのものは悪ではありません。創世記3章5節でサタンがエバを誘惑したときの「神のようになって善悪を知るようになる」ことも、悪いことではありません。悪いのは、正しいことを間違った方法で手に入れようとすることです。
しかしイエス様はそれを拒み、最終的に神様のタイミングと神様の方法で、サタンが誘惑したすべてを手にされました。死と復活の後、イエス様は「わたしには天においても地においても、すべての権威が与えられています。」と言われました。
悪い親は、子どもが欲しいものを何でも欲しいときにすぐ与えます。
良い親は、子どもがそれを扱えるようになるまで待ってから与えます。
そして悪魔の嘘はこうです。
「神はあなたに良いものを与えようとしていない。」
この嘘を信じると、さまざまな罪に陥ります。
「神様はクリスチャンの配偶者を与えてくれないから、ノンクリスチャンと結婚する。」
「神様の平安を感じられないから、娯楽やお酒、ポルノに逃げる。」
牧師のタビティ・アニャビウィレは、誘惑に打ち勝つ知恵として次のように語ります。
「もしあなたが神様を信頼して神様のタイミングを待つならば、神様はその誘惑の対象を聖なる形で与えてくださるかもしれない。」
私たちはクリスチャンの配偶者や楽な人生を約束されているわけではありません。
神様に仕えるのは、自分の望みを叶えるためではなく、神ご自身のためです。しかし神様の完全な知恵の中で、あなたがそれを扱えるようになる時に、神様は良いものを与えてくださるのかもしれません。
イエス様でさえ誘惑を受けられたという事実に励まされることを願っています。
罪のない神の御子であるイエス様が、悪魔を拝むように誘惑されたなんて、本当に驚きです！
このことは、誘惑について3つの本質を教えてくれます。
誘惑は罪ではない。
誘惑は未熟さの印ではない。
誘惑は完全には避けられない。
牧師トマス・ブルックスは『Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices（サタンの策略に対する尊い処方箋）』という古典を書きました。 その本の中で、彼は衝撃的だけど真実なことを語っています。「世界中のどんなに大きな誘惑よりも、最も小さな罪の方がはるかに悪である。」
悪魔はあなたに、「誘惑された時点で、もう罪を犯しているんだ」と信じ込ませ、どうせならもっと罪を犯せと囁きます。でもそれは嘘です！
悪魔はあなたに罪を強要することはできません。できるのは提案することだけです。だから、悪魔がどんなに馬鹿げた誘惑を投げかけてきても、動じないでください。
悪魔はあなたを罪に誘惑し、あなたが罪を犯したあとには告発する者となります。これこそが悪魔の古典的な戦術です。
そして次に見るのは、最も巧妙な策略③：「嘘」 です。
9また、悪魔はイエスをエルサレムに連れて行き、神殿の屋根の端に立たせて、こう言った。「あなたが神の子なら、ここから下に身を投げなさい。10『神は、あなたのために御使いたちに命じて、あなたを守られる。11 彼らは、その両手にあなたをのせ、あなたの足が石に打ち当たらないようにする』と書いてあるから。」12 するとイエスは答えられた。「『あなたの神である主を試みてはならない』と言われている。」13悪魔はあらゆる試みを終えると、しばらくの間イエスから離れた。
サタンはずる賢く、自分のやり方をよく知っています。
イエス様が御言葉を用いたので、サタンも策略を変え、聖書を使い始めます。
イエス様は再び御言葉で応答し、ここで聖書を解釈するための大切な原則を教えています。「聖書を聖書で解釈する」ということです。聖書は一貫しているので、分かりにくい箇所に出会ったときは、同じテーマについて語るより明確な箇所を通して理解することができます。
悪魔は詩篇91篇の--神様がご自分の民を守るという美しい約束--を引用しますが、その意味をねじ曲げ、「「どうせ神様が守ってくださるのだから、気をつけなくても大丈夫だ」と言わせようとします。
しかしイエス様は申命記6章16節を引用して、「神の守りは愚かになるための口実ではなく、慰めのためにある」と示します。
サタンは欺きの達人です。
ヨハネの福音書8章44節でイエス様はサタンを「偽りの父」と呼びます。
ヨハネの黙示録12章15節には、サタンが教会を惑わすために偽りの川を吐き出すと書かれています。
サタンの得意技は、危険な“半分の真理”です。
飛行機が離陸するとき、たった数度のズレが、空へ向かうか山に激突するかの違いを生みます。
だからこそ、「健全な教理」や「聖書の学び」を軽視するクリスチャンは、欺かれる危険性がより大きくなってしまいます。
サタンの働きは、ホラー映画のように頭が回転したり幽霊が出たりするものではありません。
第２コリント人への手紙11章14節には、「サタンでさえ光の御使いに変装します。」と書かれています。
つまり、サタンの通常の働きは、目に見える明らかな悪ではなく、次のようなものです。
キリストだけを信頼して救われることを罪人から妨げること。
恵みや罪の赦しについて混乱をもたらすこと。
偽りの敬虔さや律法主義、偽物の福音を広めること。
フィラデルフィアに住むある牧師が、ある日、興味深い想像をしました。
もしサタンが都市を支配したら、どうなるだろうか？
彼はこう言いました。: もしサタンがフィラデルフィアの街をを支配したなら、バーはすべて閉鎖され、ポルノは追放され、通りはきれいで、きちんとした服装の人々が笑顔で挨拶し合うでしょう。汚い言葉も使うこともなく、子どもたちは『はい、かしこまりました』『いいえ、ご婦人』と礼儀正しく答え、教会は毎週日曜日に満席になるでしょう。…しかし、そこでキリストは語られないのです。
告発、誘惑、そして嘘偽り—これがサタンの戦略のすべてです。
では、どうすればサタンとその策略に打ち勝つことができるのでしょうか？
私が大好きな賛美歌に、マルティン・ルターの『神はわが砦』という歌があります。
その歌の中に、悪魔について歌われている箇所がありますが、英語の歌詞を直訳すると、「たったひと言で、悪魔を倒すことができる。」と言う意味です。
みなさん、悪魔の告発や誘惑を沈黙させる言葉が一つがあります。
悪魔が命からがら逃げ出すような言葉です。
その言葉は、イエスです。
「イエス」という名前は「主は救われる」という意味を持ちます。 それは、どんな罪を犯した人でも、悔い改めてイエス・キリストを信頼するなら、永遠のいのちと罪の赦しを受けることができるからです。Aイエス様を信じるすべての人は、キリストのサタンに対する勝利にあずかるということです。
サタンを怒らせたいですか？
自分の救いへの信頼をイエス・キリストだけに置きましょう！
なぜなら、イエス様を信じていれば、悪魔は最終的に、そして永遠に、あなたに何の害をも及ぼすことはできないからです。
For modern people, believing in angels and demons sounds laughable, something left over from a pre-scientific age.
Part of the reason, I think, is that more than any other Christian belief we’ve covered, people’s ideas about this are shaped by movies. Our theology of angels and demons often comes more from Angels in the Outfield or Tom and Jerry than from the Bible.
You say, “I could never believe in a little red man with horns and a pitchfork, or invisible people in white togas with wings.”
It might surprise you, but as Christian, I agree with you.
So what does the Bible say about angels and demons?
Actually, not much.
But here’s what we do know from passages like Psalm 148:2 or Hebrews 1:14.
Angels are intelligent, spiritual beings created by God for the purpose of worshipping him and serving his people.
In other words, God runs the universe with a staff team.
And just as humans rebelled against God, a certain number of angels did too.
But unlike humanity, those angels who sinned weren’t given a second chance.
2 Peter 2:4 says “God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment.”
Genesis doesn’t tell us when it happened, but the creation and fall of angels occurred sometime before Genesis 3:1.
At that point, we meet the leader of the fallen angels, Satan, also called the Devil.
What the Bible tells us about angels and demons is given on a “need-to-know” basis. And apparently, in his wisdom, God decided we need to know much more about demons than angels—and especially about the Devil.
And so to find out what God thinks we need to know about the Devil, we turn to Luke 4:1-13, which has one of the most detailed descriptions of the Devil and his schemes. Here we read about Jesus being tempted by the Devil in the wilderness. Though the temptations Jesus faced as the Son of God incarnate are different from ours, we have a lot to learn from how Jesus engaged in spiritual warfare.
Satan and demons is a heavy subject, but I think you will find yourself strangely encouraged. When we consider the role of spiritual evil in our temptations and suffering, it's very validating of our lived experience as Christians.
And while I hope you leave here today encouraged, I also want you to leave with a sense of holy watchfulness. There’s an invisible, spiritual war going on that no one’s safe from. And as pastor Kevin DeYoung put it, “50% of spiritual warfare is just remembering the Devil exists.”
Our enemy the Devil is far weaker than God, but far stronger than us. The Devil, that “ancient serpent” as the book of Revelation describes him, is an expert on human nature. He has thousands of years of experience and so he knows every one of our weak points.
If the Devil wasn’t afraid to attack Jesus, he’s not afraid to attack you.
Sun Tzu famously wrote in his book The Art of War, “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a thousand battles without disaster.”
And so to that end, I want to study Jesus' battle with Satan in Luke 4:1-13, and consider how we can respond to three tactics of the Devil.
Tactic #1: Accusation (v1-4)
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil.
This is kinda strange, isn’t it? Why would the Holy Spirit lead Jesus to a place where he’d be tempted by the Devil?
To answer, let’s consider the place of this passage in the overall story of the Bible.
In book one of the Bible, Genesis, God puts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it. God’s one condition is that they should not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And of course, the Devil convinces Adam and Eve to rebel against God by eating from that very tree.
Then in books two-five of the Bible, Exodus-Deutronomy, God’s people, Israel, are freed from Egypt but wander in the wilderness for forty years because of their unbelief.
Now, here in Luke 4, we see that Jesus is the New Adam and the True Israel, who succeeds where his people failed.
Adam was tempted in a garden, Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.
Israel was tried for forty years, Jesus for forty days.
Jesus, representing God’s people, completely resists the Devil’s temptations.
Why does this matter?
Because according to the Bible, every member of the human race is either represented by the First Adam, or the Last Adam.
Romans 5:19- For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
1 Cor 15:22- For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
So are you in Adam or are you in Christ?
If you believe in Jesus, what Christ did counts for you. Christ’s obedience makes you righteous before God.
If you don’t believe in Jesus, what Adam failed to do counts for you. Adam’s disobedience makes you a sinner before God.
By birth, all are in the First Adam. But by grace, all can be in the Last Adam.
Let’s pick back up in v3.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
What happened just before in Luke’s narrative was the baptism of Jesus, where God affirmed Jesus as his beloved Son. Now, everything God affirmed about Jesus’ identity, Satan tries to negate.
This is a tactic of Satan called accusation. Accusation is when Satan tries to convince believers that God doesn’t love them, forgive them, or accept them because of their sins. Satan’s goal is to flood Christians with feelings of guilt, shame, and condemnation. Most of all, Satan wants us to doubt the sufficiency of Christ’s death on the cross to cover our sins.
Satan is trying to get Jesus to doubt his identity and God’s care for him.
How does Jesus respond?
4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’”
Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 from the Old Testament. In Jesus’ day, people were so familiar with Scripture that when someone quoted part of a verse, everyone knew the rest by heart.
The full verse says “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
The last words Jesus heard from the mouth of God were: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Now, the first words Jesus hears from the mouth of Satan are: “If you are the Son of God.”
To resist Satan, Jesus called to mind the word God had spoken over him at his baptism.
Because that’s how you silence the Devil’s accusations– clinging onto every word that comes from God’s mouth. God’s word alone gives life. And when God’s word pronounces you forgiven, accepted, beloved in Christ, that’s the end of the story.
So what do you do when you feel overwhelmed with guilt and shame because of your sin?
Three suggestions.
First, recognize the difference between conviction and accusation.
If you still feel guilty about a past sin you’ve already confessed and turned from, that’s accusation from the Devil. Ignore it!
If you feel guilty about a present sin you haven’t confessed or repented of, that’s conviction from the Holy Spirit. Respond to it!
Second, rehearse the promises of God.
Ephesians 6 says the only offensive weapon you have in your battle with the Devil is the sword of the Spirit…the word of God. And that’s exactly why every time Satan speaks, Jesus answers with Scripture.
In 2018, I went through a season when I felt crushed by guilt and doubted God’s love for me. So I printed out a sheet with seven or eight Bible verses. One of them was Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” I taped it to the wall in front of my desk at work. Whenever those doubts crept in, I’d look up and read those verses. And slowly, the fog of guilt began to lift.
Third, remember that Satan is right about our sin, but wrong about our Savior.
Listen to how the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther counseled a despairing young Christian.

When the devil throws your sins in your face and declares you deserve death and hell, tell him this:
“I admit that I deserve death and hell.
What of it?
Does this mean that I shall be sentenced to eternal damnation?
By no means.
For I know One who suffered and made a satisfaction in my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Where he is, there I shall be also.”

Tactic #1 of the Devil: Accusation. How do you resist it? The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.
Now lets consider Tactic #2: Temptation (5-8)
5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”
This is a pretty unsettling passage, isn’t it? Like how much power does Satan actually have?!
Does Satan really control all the kingdoms of the world, or is he lying?
Yes…and also, no.
Yes, because if Satan didn’t have real authority, this wouldn’t have been a genuine temptation for Jesus.
1 John 5:19 says “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”
No, because at the cross, Jesus defeated Satan and greatly hindered his works.
Colossians 2 says that Jesus “canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”
This is why Jesus, speaking about Satan, in Mark 3:27 says this.
But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house.
In the Old Testament, Satan deceived the nations. Outside of Ancient Israel, most of humanity worshipped false gods.
But now that Christ has come, Satan, the strong man, has been bound. And all over the world, as people are transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of Christ, Jesus is plundering the Devil’s goods.
Satan is like a dog on a leash. Satan can only go as far as God allows. Everything Satan means for evil, God turns for good.
But you say, “Isn’t this a bit of a plot hole? Why does Satan go along with this?”
In the final months of World War II, Hitler launched the Battle of the Bulge.
In late 1944, Hitler slammed half a million German troops into the Western front in France and took back a ton of land.
It looked like a comeback…but it wasn’t.
The tide of the war had already turned permanently in the Allies’ favor after the D-Day invasion just months earlier. Hitler was losing the war, and this battle was his last desperate attempt, his way to go down swinging.
And that’s what Satan’s doing right now. He’s throwing everything he’s got at the church—and at you.
But the demise of Satan was already sealed at the cross of Christ. The end of the story is already written.
There’s something interesting about what Satan tempts Jesus with.
The Devil says to Jesus: “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”
Satan offers Jesus a crown without a cross. The Devil tempts Jesus to set up a kingdom like Rome where he doesn’t have to humble himself or be a friend of sinners.
It’s a subtle temptation. Authority itself isn’t bad, just like what Satan tempted Eve with in Genesis 3:5, being “like God, knowing good and evil” isn’t inherently bad. What’s bad is taking the right thing in the wrong way.
But Jesus refused, and in the end he actually got everything Satan tempted him with in God’s timing and in God’s way. After his death and resurrection, Jesus said “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Bad parents give kids whatever they want whenever they want it.
Good parents wait to give things their kids want until they can handle them.
And the lie the Devil wants you to believe is this.
“God is withholding good from me.”
And when you believe that, it can lead you into all kinds of sin.
“God’s not giving me a Christian spouse, so I’ll just marry this nonbeliever.”
“I’m not feeling peace from God, so I’ll seek it in entertainment, alcohol, or pornography.”
Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile gives wisdom on resisting these temptations. He says: God may give you the thing you’re being tempted with in a holy way if you trust God and wait on his timing.
We’re not promised Christian spouses or easy circumstances. We don’t serve God so we can get the things we want. But God in his perfect wisdom may give you the good things you want at a time you can handle.
I hope you’re encouraged by the fact that even Jesus was tempted.
Like how wild is it that Jesus, the sinless Son of God, was tempted to worship the Devil?!!
This tells us three things about the nature of temptation.
Temptation is not sin.
Temptation is not immaturity.
Temptation is not 100% avoidable.
Thomas Brooks, a pastor, wrote a classic book called Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices. In it he says something shocking, but true. “The least sin is a greater evil than the greatest temptation in the world.”
The Devil wants you to believe that when you’re tempted, you’ve already sinned, so you might as well sin even more. But that’s a lie!
The Devil can’t force you to sin, he can only suggest. So don’t be shaken by whatever absurd temptations the Devil tries to throw your way.
The Devil tempts you to sin, and after you sin he becomes your accuser. These are his classic tactics.
Now let’s look at the most subtle one of all, Tactic #3: Lies.
9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ 11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Satan is crafty and good at what he does.
Jesus used Scripture, so Satan adapts his strategy and starts using Scripture, too.
Jesus responds yet again with Scripture, and it teaches us an important principle for interpreting the Bible. Interpret Scripture with Scripture. The Bible is consistent with itself, so whenever you come across a confusing passage, clearer passages about the same subject can help you understand it.
The Devil quotes Psalm 91, a beautiful passage about God’s providential care for his people. But Satan twists it, making it say we can be careless because God will protect us anyway. And Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16 to show that God’s protection is meant to be a comfort, not an excuse to be foolish.
Satan is a master of deception.
In John 8:44, Jesus calls Satan the “father of lies.”
In Revelation 12:15, says Satan spews out a river of lies to deceive the church.
Satan’s speciality is the dangerous half-truth.
When an airplane takes off a difference of just a few degrees is the difference between the plane going into the sky or into the side of the mountain.
And this is why Christians who minimize the importance of sound doctrine and Bible study put themselves at greater risk of being deceived.
Satan’s work doesn’t ordinarily look like the horror movies with spinning heads and ghosts.
2 Corinthians 11:14 says that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
In other words, Satan’s ordinary work is not obvious evil but things like…
Keeping sinners from being saved by trusting in Christ alone.
Introducing confusion about grace and forgiveness of sins.
Promoting false piety, legalism, and counterfeit gospels.
A pastor living in Philadelphia, once had an interesting thought experiment. What would it look like if the Devil took over a city?
He says: If Satan took over Philadelphia, all of the bars would be closed, pornography banished, and pristine streets would be filled with tidy pedestrians who smiled at each other. There would be no swearing. The children would say, “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am,” and the churches would be full every Sunday… but Christ would not be preached.
Accusation, temptation, and lies–that’s the full Satanic playbook.
And so how do you defeat Satan and all of his tactics?
My favorite hymn is A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Martin Luther. It has this amazing line where it says about the Devil “one little word shall fell him.”
Friends there’s one word that silences the Devil's accusations and temptations. There’s one word that makes the Devil flee for his life.
Jesus.
Jesus' name literally means “The LORD Saves.” That’s because anyone, no matter what they’ve done, who repents of their sins and trusts in Jesus Christ will receive eternal life and forgiveness of sins. All who believe share in Christ’s victory over Satan.
So do you want to make the Devil furious this morning?
Trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation.
Because if you believe in Jesus, there’s nothing the Devil can do to harm you ultimately and eternally.
