自由になりたいですか？Do You Want to Be Free?|ヨハネの福音書8章31-59節 John 8:31-59

私はアメリカから来ました。今はフルタイムで日本語を学んでいます。
この前、学校でスピーチがあり、アメリカの有名な建造物について話しました。
アメリカの建物で、自由の女神以上に、このようなスピーチにふさわしいものがあるでしょうか？
日本語でスピーチを書いているとき、日本語ではその像が少し直訳的に「自由の女神像」と呼ばれていることに気づきました。
自由はアメリカでとても重要な価値観であり、まるで女神と呼べるほど大切にされています。
自由は世界中の人々にとっても大切な価値であり、すべての人が自由を求めています。
ヨハネの福音書7章から8章にかけての長い議論の最後の部分で、イエスは自由について語られます。
今日の聖書箇所はその会話の最後の部分ですが、そこでは話が自由についての議論へと発展しています。
私は高校のときディベートチームに所属していたので、物事をディベートのように考えることがよくあります。
ですから、この箇所が議論の形になっていると気づいたとき、私はその議論の流れに沿って説教の構成を考えました。
今日の聖書箇所で、イエスは自由について重要な主張をされ、その後で反対する人々の反論に答え、最後にご自身の主張が正しいことを示されます。
この一連の議論の中で、イエスはいくつか非常に大胆な主張をしています。
「わたしを信じる者は、聖書が言っているとおり、その人の心の奥底から、生ける水の川が流れ出るようになります。」
「わたしは世の光です。わたしに従う者は、決して闇の中を歩むことがなく、いのちの光を持ちます。」
イエスは、さらにもう一つの大胆で重要な主張をもって、この対話を続けられます。
「あなたがたは、わたしのことばにとどまるなら、本当にわたしの弟子です。あなたがたは真理を知り、真理はあなたがたを自由にします。」
「まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。罪を行っている者はみな、罪の奴隷です。奴隷はいつまでも家にいるわけではありませんが、息子はいつまでもいます。ですから、子があなたがたを自由にするなら、あなたがたは本当に自由になるのです。
イエスの言葉は大きな自由の約束を示していますが、同時に、その自由を与えることができるのはイエスだけであることも明らかにしています。
彼らはイエスを信じ始めてはいましたが、すぐに反発してこう言いました。「私たちはアブラハムの子孫であって、今までだれの奴隷になったこともありません。どうして、『あなたがたは自由になる』と言われるのですか。」

死からの自由
神の家族に迎え入れられる
罪からの自由
罪からの自由とは、もう罪を犯さなくてもよいということです。罪から解放されると、罪を望まなくなります。
実際には力もなく、満たすこともできないものに頼ることをやめるようになります。
罪からの自由は、神の完全な御心を見分け、それを良いと認めることができる、新しくされた心へと導きます。
「真の自由とは、自分の好きなことを何でもする自由ではなく、なすべきことを行う自由である。そしてそれが本当の自由なのは、今やなすべきことを行うこと自体が私たちの喜びとなるからである。」(D.A. カーソン ヨハネの福音書註解書 350頁)
死からの自由
この会話の後の部分で、イエスは次のように約束されます。
まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。だれでもわたしのことばを守るなら、その人はいつまでも決して死を見ることがありません。
これは、この箇所以前にもヨハネの福音書で何度も語られている永遠の命の約束です。
死とは、究極の牢獄のようなものです。そこから逃げ出すことはできません。しかし、もし死がもはや存在しないなら、人は本当に自由になります。
大きなとげが指に刺さったと想像してみてください
親指は赤くなり、ずっと痛みます。
絆創膏を貼るかもしれませんし、痛み止めを飲むかもしれません。
しかし、どれだけ症状を和らげようとしても、その木片を指から取り除かない限り、問題は解決しません。
罪と死も同じです。
それらから解放されない限り、どれだけ人生を良くしようとしても、問題の根本である罪と死は解決されません。
この真の自由には、もう一つの祝福があります。
神の家族に迎え入れられる
35節と36節にはこう書かれています。:
奴隷はいつまでも家にいるわけではありませんが、息子はいつまでもいます。ですから、子があなたがたを自由にするなら、あなたがたは本当に自由になるのです。
もはや奴隷ではなくなると、神の家族の一員であることがあなたの新しいアイデンティティになります。
あなたは神の家族に迎え入れられ、地上では信者の家族の一員となり、同時に天における神の家族の一員となります。
地上の教会における神の家族は、天で永遠に続く神の家族の再会のほんの一部にすぎません。
イエスは、完全にご自分を信じる人たちに対して、このような驚くべき約束をされました。
もしイエスを信じ、本当にその弟子となるなら、あなたは真理を知り、その真理があなたを自由にします。
これらの言葉を完全に受け入れるのが難しいことを、私はよく知っています。
なぜなら、イエスを信じ始めていた人々でさえ、このような主張に対して反発したからです。
ここは、この議論の中でイエスが反論に答える部分です。
彼らの反論は何だったのでしょうか。
彼らは、自分たちのアイデンティティだけで救われると考えていました。
また、イエスだけが彼らを救う特別な存在だとは信じていませんでした。
今日の人々も、同じような反論をすることがあります。
ユダヤ人たちの最初の反論は、「自分たちの父はアブラハムだ」というものでした。
つまり、自分たちが神の民であるというアイデンティティが、自分たちを救うと考えていたのです。
旧約聖書では、神はアブラハムを友と呼び、彼の子孫によってすべての国々が祝福されると約束されました。
そのため、イエスと話しているユダヤ人たちは、自分たちの今の立場だけで神には十分だと考えていました。
彼らはすでに十分良い人間だと思っていたので、イエスの言葉を聞く必要も、何かから解放される必要もないと考えていたのです。
言い換えるなら、「私はイエスを必要としない。アブラハムがいるからだ」ということです。
今日の人々も、同じようなことを言います。「私は良い人間です。悪いことはしていません。」「どうして救われる必要があるんですか。」
ある人はこう思うかもしれません。「私は裕福だし、健康だし、賢いし、尊敬もされている。良い家庭もある。」「必要なものは全部ここにある。何かから解放される必要なんてない。」
しかし実際には、それらのどれも、あなたを本当に傷つけている罪と死から救うことはできません。
もし私たちが、自分の国籍や社会的地位、銀行口座のお金が、全ての人生の問題を解決し、良い人生を与えてくれるに十分なものだと思うなら、それは欺かれているのです。ちょうどイエス様の時代のユダヤ人たちと同じように。
しかしイエスは、その考えを正されます。
「あなたがたがアブラハムの子どもなら、アブラハムのわざを行うはずです。ところが今あなたがたは、神から聞いた真理をあなたがたに語った者であるわたしを、殺そうとしています。アブラハムはそのようなことをしませんでした。あなたがたは、あなたがたの父がすることを行っているのです。」
彼らの父とは誰のことでしょうか？
それは悪魔です。
あなたがたは、悪魔である父から出た者であって、あなたがたの父の欲望を成し遂げたいと思っています。悪魔は初めから人殺しで、真理に立っていません。彼のうちには真理がないからです。悪魔は、偽りを言うとき、自分の本性から話します。なぜなら彼は偽り者、また偽りの父だからです。
イエスは、子どもは父親に似て行動するものだということを指摘しています。カエルの子はカエル、ということです。
すべての人は罪を犯して、神の栄光を受けることができず、ローマ人への手紙 3章23節
すべての人は、神のようではなく、悪魔のように行動してきました。
聖書は、悪魔（サタンとも呼ばれる）が神の敵であると教えています。
悪魔とその悪霊たちは、この世界で悪を広げようと働き、戦争や差別、虐待、そしてさまざまな罪に影響を与えています。
創世記では、彼は蛇として現れ、エバを神に逆らって罪を犯すように誘惑しました。
そしてそれは、「神は本当にそう言われたのですか」という偽りによって行われました。
だからこそイエスは、悪魔を「偽りの父」と呼ばれたのです。

それは殺人や盗みのような「大きな罪」だけでなく、憎しみ、貪欲、欲望、そして高慢も含まれます。
これらすべてが、私たちを罪の奴隷にしてしまうのです。
しかしイエスは当時の人々も、今日の私たちも愛しておられ、47節でこう語りかけています。
神から出た者は、神のことばに聞き従います。ですから、あなたがたが聞き従わないのは、あなたがたが神から出た者でないからです。
これは逆のことも意味しています。
もしイエスを信じ、その言葉を聞くなら、あなたは自由にされ、神から出た者、つまり神に属する者となるのです。
しかしユダヤ人たちはまだ信じず、別の反論をします。今度はイエスの身分についての反論です。
ユダヤ人たちはイエスに答えて言った。「あなたはサマリア人で悪霊につかれている、と私たちが言うのも当然ではないか。」
彼らは、正気の人ならそのような主張をするはずがないと考えました。
ここまでイエスの話を聞いて、彼を預言者や良い道徳を教える教師だとは思っていたでしょう。しかし、イスラエルのこれまでのすべての教師や預言者よりも上に置くとしたらどうでしょう？それは決して受け入れられないことでした。
イエスはもう一度、彼らを安心させようとし、また懇願し、彼らの壁を打ち破り、彼らの中に残っている最後の信仰を引き出そうとして、次のように答えました。

しかしそれは、彼らをさらに怒らせるだけでした。どうして彼はそのような主張ができるのでしょうか。

「あなたが悪霊につかれていることが、今分かった。アブラハムは死に、預言者たちも死んだ。それなのにあなたは、『だれでもわたしのことばを守るなら、その人はいつまでも決して死を味わうことがない』と言う。あなたは、私たちの父アブラハムよりも偉大なのか。アブラハムは死んだ。預言者たちも死んだ。あなたは、自分を何者だと言うのか。」
イエスはいったい自分を何者だと思っているのでしょうか。この時点で、イエスはすでにいくつかの驚くべきことを行っていました。
彼は奇跡的に人々を癒し、水をぶどう酒に変えました。
彼は人々を悪霊から解放し、人々を赦し、人々を回復させました。
それらのことだけでも、彼がアブラハムより偉く、彼より前に来た人々よりも偉いことを示しているはずです。
でも、そんなことって本当にあり得るのでしょうか。
これまでに多くの善い人々、教師、祭司、預言者、賢者、そして導師たちが存在してきましたが、どうしてイエスが特別なのでしょうか。
ウィキペディアで少し調べれば、少なくとも300人の宗教の創始者がいることがわかります。しかも、それぞれの宗教の中にはさらに多くの教師や預言者がいます。
そして、すでにイエスを信じているクリスチャンである私たちでさえ、イエス以外のものに頼ったり、他の人や物、感情や経験をイエスより優先してしまうと、同じようにイエスを退けてしまうことがあります。
もし、どうしてイエスがこれらの中で特別なのか、どうしてイエスがこの世のものよりも満たしてくれるのかと疑問に思うなら、まず目を向けるべきなのはイエスのこの訴えです。
まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。だれでもわたしのことばを守るなら、その人はいつまでも決して死を見ることがありません。」
イエスは、あなたに良い道徳的な人生を与えようとしているのでも、地上の金銭や人間関係の問題を解決しようとしているのでもありません。
むしろ、死からの自由を与えようとしているのです。
死は究極の悪であり、すべての人が一生をかけて避けようとするものです。
それはすべての関係、すべての愛、すべての喜びと幸せの終わりです。
もしあなたが死んでしまったら、どうしてそれらを経験できるでしょうか。
しかしイエスは、死の終わりを約束しています。
永遠の命を。
もし死が取り除かれるなら、あなたを悩ませるものは何が残るでしょうか。
しかし、どうしてイエスがそのようなことをできるのでしょうか。
イエスはいったい自分を何者だと思っているのでしょうか。
この最後の部分で、イエスはこの議論の中で自分の主張を裏づけます。そしてそれは、イエスの他の言葉を信じ、理解するための鍵です。
イエスは答えられた。「わたしがもし自分自身に栄光を帰するなら、わたしの栄光は空しい。わたしに栄光を与える方は、わたしの父です。この方を、あなたがたは『私たちの神である』と言っています。あなたがたはこの方を知らないが、わたしは知っています。もしわたしがこの方を知らないと言うなら、わたしもあなたがたと同様に偽り者となるでしょう。しかし、わたしはこの方を知っていて、そのみことばを守っています。あなたがたの父アブラハムは、わたしの日を見るようになることを、大いに喜んでいました。そして、それを見て、喜んだのです。」
イエスは、ユダヤ人たちが自分たちのアイデンティティの根拠として掲げ、同時にイエスのアイデンティティを貶めようとしていた二人、アブラハムと神の話題に話を戻します。
もしアブラハムがイエスを待ち望んでいたなら、イエスは当然アブラハムより優れているのです。
この議論の最後の部分には、たくさんの言葉遊びが含まれています。
イエスが「アブラハムはわたしの日を見ることを喜んだ」と言うとき、おそらくそれは、メシアがイスラエルを救うメシア時代、あるいは旧約聖書で預言されている主の日を指しています。

出エジプト記で、神はモーセにご自身の名を明かされ、「『わたしはある』という者である」と言われます。
この名を持てるのは神だけです。もしイエスが自分が神であると主張していることに疑いがあるなら、対立者の反応がまさにその証明です。
すると彼らは、イエスに投げつけようと石を取った。
イエスが神であるというこの啓示は、これまでイエスが語ってきたすべてのことを理解するための枠組みとなります。
それは、見知らぬ人があなたの職場に入り、仕事のやり方を教えるようなものです。
最初はこう思うでしょう。「彼らに私の仕事のやり方を教える権利があるのか？」しかし、その人はこう明かします。「私はこの会社のCEOです。」
もしイエスが神であるなら、彼のこれまでの重大な主張はすべて真実です。
もしイエスが神であるなら、罪と死から自由にできるのはイエスだけです。
イエスは十字架での死と、死からの復活を通してこれを成し遂げました。
イエスが十字架で死んだとき、すべての罪を自分自身に引き受け、信じる者を罪から自由にしました。
イエスが墓に葬られた三日後、生き返り、死に打ち勝ち、信じる者すべてを死から自由にしました。
イエスが復活したとき、神が彼を義なる御子として立証したため、イエスの言ったことがすべて真実であることが皆に示されました。
イエスが天に昇った後、父の家に私たちのための場所を準備し、私たちが神の家族に養子として迎え入れられたことを示しています。
罪からの自由、死からの自由、そして神の家族に迎え入れられる。

Hello I’m William Payne and I work at the church here as the director of children’s ministry. This is Yuka who will be translating.
I’m from America and I’m also a full time Japanese language student.
The other day I had to give a speech about a famous building in America.
What better building to talk about than the statue of Liberty?
As I was writing my speech in Japanese, I realized that in Japanese, the statue is called, woodenly, “the goddess of freedom statue.”
Freedom is a very important value in America, so much so it could be called a goddess.
Freedom is a high value for people everywhere in the world and all people seek to be free.
Jesus talks about freedom in the final section of a long discussion that takes place in John 7-8.
Our scripture today is the final portion of that conversation but now it has devolved into a debate about freedom.
I was on the debate team in high-school so I often think like a debater.
And so when I realized this section was a debate I outlined the sermon around the main movements of the debate.
In today's Scripture, Jesus makes a serious claim about freedom, and then answers some objections from opponents, and finally, validates his claim.
In this full discussion he makes some extremely bold claims: (John 7:38) Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
(John 8:12) I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus continues the conversation with another bold, serious claim:
31bIf you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
He also says: 34“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
His words make a great promise of freedom, but also make it clear that only Jesus would be able to free them.
And though they started to believe in him, they immediately pushed back saying: 33“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
And it makes sense; Calling a large group of people slaves is a serious accusation.
It grates against their very identity as the special chosen people of God through their ancestor Abraham.
It also lifts Jesus up as someone who has great power, greater than everyone who had come before him.
Even greater than Moses, Abraham, and Elijah, because their teachings haven’t set them free.
The Main point from the Scripture today is this: Only Jesus can set us free from sin and death.
What does Jesus mean by if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed? I think there are three clear truths:
Freedom from sin.
Freedom from death.
Adoption to the family.
Freedom from sin
Freedom from sin means that we no longer have to sin.
When you are free from sin you stop desiring it.
You stop trusting in things that do not have power and don't fulfill.
Freedom from sin leads to a renewed mind that can test and approve God's perfect will.
“True freedom is not the liberty to do everything we please but the liberty to do what we ought, and it is genuine liberty because doing what ought now pleases us.” (D. A. Carson John commentary page 350)
Freedom from death.
Jesus later in this conversation promises that: 51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
He is promising eternal life just like he has 12 other times in John before this passage.
Death, like an ultimate prison. A place you cannot escape or break out of.
But when death is no longer a possibility, you are truly free.
Imagine you have a big splinter.
Your thumb is getting red and it hurts constantly.
You might put a band-aid on it, or you might take a pain-pill.
But no matter how hard you try to treat the symptoms, until you pull the chunk of wood out of your finger, your problem will never be solved.
The same goes for sin and death.
If you are not freed from those, no matter how hard you try to make your life better, you will never get around the core issues causing the problems, sin and death.
This true freedom also offers a third benefit:
Adoption into the family of God.
Verse 35 and 36 say: The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
When you are no longer a slave, being part of God’s family is now your identity.
You are adopted into God’s family, on earth being part of the family of believers, but also part of God’s family in heaven.
God’s family here on earth in the church is a mere sampling of the eternal forever reunion of the family of God in heaven.
Jesus made all of these radical promises for those who fully believe in him.
If you believe in Jesus, truly become his disciple, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
These words I know are hard to fully accept.
I know this because of how those who started to believe in Jesus responded to such claims.
This is the part of the debate where Jesus answers some objections.
What are their objections?:
They thought their own identity was sufficient to save them
They did not believe Jesus was unique in his identity to save them.
People today can have the same objections to Jesus.
The Jews first objection is that Abraham is their father.
Which means their personal identity as the people of God would save them.
In the Old Testament, God called Abraham his friend and promised that all the nations would be blessed by his children.
So the Jews that Jesus is talking to think their current identity is enough for God.
They don’t need to listen to Jesus, or be free from anything because they are already good enough.
In other words, what they were saying was: I don’t need Jesus, I have Abraham.
People today have the same objections.
“I’m a good person, I don't do anything wrong.”
“Why would I need saving?”
You might also think: “I'm wealthy, I'm healthy, I'm smart, I'm respected, I have a good family,
I have everything I need right here, I don't need to be set free from anything.”
But in reality none of that is good enough to save you from what is really harming you, sin and death.
When we think that our national identity or social status or money in our bank account is enough to solve all our problems and give us a good life we are being deceived, just like the Jews of Jesus day.
But Jesus corrects that thinking.
39b“If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41You are doing the works your father did.”
And who is their father?
The Devil.
44You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Jesus makes the point that children act just like their fathers. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
All people have acted like the Devil, not like God.
The Bible tells us that the Devil, sometimes called Satan, is God's enemy.
The Devil and his demons actively work towards evil in this world, influencing all war, racism, abuse, and sin.
In Genesis he is the serpent that convinces Eve to sin against God.
And its done with the lie: “Did god really say”
That's why Jesus says here that he is the father of lies.
The devil uses lies to deceive people and convince them to not believe in the truth.
The people then were so deceived they wanted to kill Jesus.
People today are also deceived by the Devil because of sin. You might think “I’m not a slave” What Jesus says though is that anyone who sins is a slave to sin.
And not just “big sins” like murder or theft, but also hate, greed, lust, and pride.
All of these make us slaves to sin.
But Jesus loves the people then and today and pleads with both saying in verse 47:
47Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
Which also implies the opposite.
If you do believe in Jesus, and hear his words, you will be set free and will be of God.
The Jews still don't believe and give another objection. This time it’s about Jesus’ identity.
Verse 48 says: The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
They thought that no one who was in their right mind could make such a claim.
They have listened to Jesus so far and surely think of him as a prophet or good moral teacher, but to elevate him above all the other teachers and prophets they had before? Surely not.
Jesus tries to reassure and plead with them one more time, to break through their walls and pull out any last belief they had with his response:
49Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
But it only enrages them further. How can he make such a claim?
At this they exclaimed, 52“Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ 53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”
Who does Jesus think he is?
At this point in his life, Jesus has done some amazing things.
He has healed people miraculously, turned water into wine.
He has freed people from demons, forgiven people, restored people.
Those things alone should prove that he is greater than Abraham, greater than those who came before him.
But can that really be true?
So many good people, teachers, priests, prophets, sages, and gurus have existed over the years, how could Jesus be special?
A quick Wikipedia search will show you that there are at least 300 different founders of different religions, not to mention different teachers and prophets in each one of them.
And Christians, those who believe in Jesus already, we too can fall into this same rejection of Jesus when we trust in things other than Jesus, and look to other people, things, feelings or experiences over him.
So if you are wondering, how can Jesus be special among these, how can Jesus be more satisfying than the things of this world, the first place to look is his plea:
51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
Jesus is not trying to give you a good moral life, or solve your earthly problems of money or relationships.
Instead he is offering freedom from death.
Death is the ultimate evil, the thing all people work their whole lives to avoid.
It is the end of all relationships, all love, all joy and happiness.
If you’re dead, how could you experience those things?
But Jesus is promising the end of death.
Life forever.
If death is removed, what is left to trouble you?
But how could Jesus do such a thing?
Who does Jesus think he is?
This final section is where Jesus validates his claim in the debate and it’s the key to believing and understanding the rest of his words.
54Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
Jesus brings it back to the two people the Jews have claimed for their identity and to diminish Jesus’ identity, Abraham and God.
He is better than Abraham because if Abraham looked forward to Jesus, surely Jesus is better.
This last section of debate contains a lot of word play.
When Jesus says that Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day, and saw it, he is probably referring either to the messianic age, where the Messiah would save Israel, or the great Day of the Lord that is prophesied about in the Old Testament.
Either way, Jesus is increasing his identity.
He is the Messiah and the one to bring about God’s day.
His opponents are either unwilling to believe this, or trying to continue arguing with him in bad faith.
57So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”which is silly of course.
Abraham lived thousands of years before Jesus, how could he have possibly seen Jesus.
And then Jesus responds with the most shocking and serious statement of all:
58“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
It's so shocking because Jesus is not simply saying that he has existed for a long time, but instead is taking on the very name of God himself, I AM.
In Exodus, God reveals his name to Moses saying: I AM WHO I AM.
Only God can have that name, and if there is any doubt Jesus was claiming to be God, his opponent’s response proves that he was saying exactly that.
59they picked up stones to throw at him,
This revelation that Jesus is God frames everything that Jesus has said so far.
It's like a stranger coming into your place of business and telling you how to do your job.
At first you would think: “Who are they to tell me how to do my job?”
But then they reveal: "I'm the CEO of the company”
If Jesus is God, all the serious claims he has made are true.
If Jesus is God then only Jesus can set you free from sin and death.
Jesus did this through his death on the Cross and resurrection from the dead.
When Jesus died on the cross he took all the sin onto himself, freeing those who believe from sin.
After Jesus was dead in the grave for three days, he rose to life again, defeating death and freeing all those who believe from death.
When Jesus rose, it proved to everyone that what he said was true because God vindicated him as his righteous Son.
After Jesus ascended into heaven, he is preparing a place for us in his Father’s house, showing that we have been adopted into the family of God.
Freedom from Sin, Freedom from Death, Adoption into the family of God.
So knowing Jesus is God, and that his words are true, I want to back to the first radical thing that Jesus says: 31“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
He also says: 34“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
So I ask you today, will you let him set you free?
Will you let go of your own goodness and identity and trust Christ’s full divine identity?
Will you believe in him and let the truth set you free?
