今朝の聖書箇所、ヨハネの福音書10章では、イエス様は「羊」と「羊飼い」について多く語られます。
これは、当時の人にとっては、とても身近な例えでしたが、私たちにとっては、あまり馴染みがないかもしれません。
実際に羊を見たことがある人、手を挙げてください。 実際に羊飼いに会ったことがある人、手を挙げてください。
……少し文脈を理解する必要がありますね。
ある聖書学者は、こう書いています。
「羊と羊飼いの関係の中で、最も大きな特徴は、羊の群れは、ただ羊飼いの"声"によって導かれるという点である。」
イエス様は、羊を導き、守り、そして羊のために命を捨てられるほどの良い羊飼いです。
そして、ヨハネ10章が私たちに問いかけているのは、これです。
あなたは、イエスの羊ですか？ あなたは、良き羊飼いの声を聞き分けることができますか？
この問いに答えるため、イエス様の声がもたらす「二つの影響」を考えていきましょう。 イエス様のその声を聞くとき、何が起こるのでしょうか？
まず第一に、イエス様の御声は、サタンの策略と神様の働きの違いを明らかにします。（1〜19節）
イエス様は、ユダヤ人のお祭りの中で群衆に教えておられました。この祭りは、後に「ハヌカ」と呼ばれるようになります。
6節では、イエス様は「比喩」を用いて、ご自分と人々との関係を説明されました。
この比喩の中で——
イエス様は牧者 信じる者たちは羊 盗人や強盗、狼は、サタンの働き を表しています。
サタンや悪魔は、神様とその民に敵対する、悪い霊的存在です。
この比喩は、サタンがどのように働くのかを教えてくれます。
たとえばサタンは、羊を顧みない羊飼いたちを立てるのです。
1節でイエス様はこのように言います。：「まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。羊たちの囲いに、門から入らず、ほかのところを乗り越えて来る者は、盗人であり強盗です。
1節は、イスラエルの宗教指導者に対するとても厳しい批判です。
イエス様が語っているのは、盗人や強盗がイスラエルという羊たちの囲いに入り込んできたということです。本来、神によって立てられていない人々が神の民の霊的リーダーになってしまっているということです。9節で、イエス様はご自身が、人が救われるために通る門であると言われます。しかし、最も恐ろしいのは、これらの宗教指導者たちは、その門から入らず、ほかのところから入ってきたという事——つまり、彼ら自身が救われていない、ということです。
救われていない者、サタンによって立てられた者たちが、神の民を導こうとすると、どうなるのでしょうか？
……大惨事です。
12 牧者でない雇い人は、羊たちが自分のものではないので、狼が来るのを見ると、置き去りにして逃げてしまいます。それで、狼は羊たちを奪ったり散らしたりします。13 彼は雇い人で、羊たちのことを心にかけていないからです。
多くの兵士を倒せば、戦いには勝てます。将軍を倒せば、戦争そのものに勝つことができます。つまり、「羊飼いを打てば、羊は散る」という策略は、サタンの古くからある策略の一つなのです。
横暴な牧師によって傷つけられてきた人たちは山ほどいます。道徳的に失敗したリーダーによって、崩壊してしまった教会も数えきれません。
サタンは、そうした悪い例を用いて、忠実な羊飼いたちに対する不信感を植え付けていくのです。
しかし、イエス様の解決は、「リーダーをなくすこと」ではありません。
復活の後、イエス様は使徒ペテロに「わたしの羊を養いなさい」と命じられました。ペテロの手紙を見ると、ペテロ自身も自分が神の群れを牧する者であり、「大牧者」であるイエス様が共におられることを理解していたとわかります。
イエス様は、このようにご自分の民を「羊飼いたち」を通して養われます。
クリスチャンの人たちに、「今日、どのようにしてイエス様の声を聞くことができる？」と聞いたら、基本的には２つの答えが返ってくると思います。
心の中で感じる主観的な霊的導き
個人的な聖書の学び
どちらも良い答えです！
でも、もしそれだけだとしたら、私たちの信仰は、あまりにも主観的で、個人主義的なものになってしまう危険性はないでしょうか。
なので、イエス様の声を聞くためには、もう一つ必要です。
忠実に語られる御言葉
これは「牧師が言うことは何でも正しい」という意味ではありません。牧会者の権威は、神の御言葉が語っている範囲を超えることはありません。しかし同時に、私たちは「イエスの声を聞くんだ」という期待を持って教会に来るべきだということです。
使徒の働き17章で、パウロの説教を聞いた人々は、このバランスをしっかりと持っていました。この町のユダヤ人は、...非常に熱心にみことばを受け入れ、はたしてそのとおりかどうか、毎日聖書を調べた。
サタンは、メッセージを語る者だけでなく、メッセージそのものも攻撃します。
サタンは、偽りのメシアを送り込むのです。
イエス様はこのように語ります。：2 しかし、門から入るのは羊たちの牧者です。3門番は牧者のために門を開き、羊たちはその声を聞き分けます。牧者は自分の羊たちを、それぞれ名を呼んで連れ出します。4 羊たちをみな外に出すと、牧者はその先頭に立って行き、羊たちはついて行きます。彼の声を知っているからです。5 しかし、ほかの人には決してついて行かず、逃げて行きます。ほかの人たちの声は知らないからです。」...8 わたしの前に来た者たちはみな、盗人であり強盗です。羊たちは彼らの言うことを聞きませんでした。
イエス様は、ユダヤ人の宗教指導者たちを「雇い人」にたとえ、彼らは羊のことを心にかけていないと批判しました。
しかし8節で、イエス様は「偽りのメシア」について語られます。「わたしの前に来た者たちはみな、盗人であり強盗です」と言われます。
イエス様以前にも、偽りのメシアがたくさん現れましたが、ご自身の後にも多く現れるとイエス様は警告します。
マタイの福音書24章24節にはこうあります。偽キリストたち、偽預言者たちが現れて、できれば選ばれた者たちをさえ惑わそうと、大きなしるしや不思議を行います。
今まで読んだウィキペディアのページの中で、「自分をイエスだと主張した人々の一覧」という恐ろしいページがあります。そこには、とても悪い人たちのとても長いリストが並んでいます。
そこに書かれている一人が、洪秀全（こうしゅうぜん）という人で、彼は1843年に幻を見て、自分はイエスの弟であると信じるようになりました。彼は、太平天国の乱を起こし、当時の中国の人口の約10％にあたる3000万人の命が失われました。その影響で、中国は100年以上にわたり、キリスト教に対して心を閉ざすことになりました。
しかし問題は、自分をイエスだと名乗る個人だけではありません。「偽りのイエス」を宣べ伝える集団も存在します。
アメリカで生まれた宗教でモルモン教というものがありますが、この宗教はキリスト教の言葉を使いながらも、多神教であって、キリスト教ではありません。彼らは世界中に多くの宣教師を送り、多くの神々の一人にすぎない偽りの「イエス」を宣べ伝えています。また、そこまで極端ではないですが、同じくらい危険なのが、世界中にある、いわゆる「キリスト教系」の学校です。そこでは、退屈で飼いならされたようなイエスが語られ、聖書のキリストとは全く違う姿が語られています。それは、人々に「イエスを知っている」と思わせるには十分ですが、「なぜイエスが重要なのか」を理解するには不十分なのです。
マルティン・ルターはこう言いました。「神が教会を建てるところには、サタンもすぐ隣に礼拝堂を建てる。」
つまりサタンは、偽物の福音を使って、本物への関心を薄れさせるということです。
私は長い間、ラーメンにあまり感動したことがありませんでした。アメリカのレストランでラーメンを食べて、「どうしてこんなに人気があるんだろう？」と思っていました。「どうしてこんなに高いのに…こんなにつまらない味なんだろう？」
でもそれから、福岡でラーメンを食べました。「どうしてこんなに安いのに…こんなに美味しいんだろう？」
神の本当の羊は、ほかの人たちの声は知りません。彼らは、「アメリカのラーメンのようなイエス」では満足しません。本物でないとき、それが分かるのです。
ある教会で、福音から離れていった牧師がいました。彼は高い教育を受け、聖書から自分の主張を論証することもできました。教会の人たちは、議論で彼に勝つことも、何が間違っているのかを正確に説明することもできませんでしたが、それが誠実な教えではないことは分かっていました。やがて彼らは牧師に立ち向かい、その牧師は教会を去ることになりました。全てのクリスチャンが、難しい神学書を読むわけではないと思います。それでも誤った教えを聞いたとき、「うまく説明できないけれど…これは主の声じゃない。」と感じることがあります。
偽りの教えや悪いリーダーたちは、何千人もの信仰を壊します。
しかし、孤立は、何百万人もの信仰を壊します。
だからサタンは、羊を散らすことを好むのです。
では、狼は羊を思いのままにできるとき、何をするでしょうか？
12b…それで、狼は羊たちを奪ったり散らしたりします。
羊は、本能的に一緒に集まり、群れで行動する動物です。群れの中にいるときが最も安全だと知っています。
もしあなたが狼だったとしたら、群れ全体を狙うでしょうか？それとも、一匹で迷っている羊を狙うでしょうか？
日本の人口の中で、プロテスタントのクリスチャンは約0.45％です。しかし実際に教会に通っている人は、わずか0.22％にすぎません。つまり、プロテスタントだと認めている人のうち、実際に地域の教会に属しているのは、約半数なのです。……もしかすると、日本で人々が福音を知らないままでいるための、サタンの大きな戦略の一つは、羊を散らすことなのかもしれません。
しかし、良い羊飼いの声は、サタンによって散らされた羊たちを、再び集めます。3b羊たちはその声を聞き分けます。牧者は自分の羊たちを、それぞれ名を呼んで連れ出します。4 羊たちをみな外に出すと、牧者はその先頭に立って行き、羊たちはついて行きます。彼の声を知っているからです。
主の御霊は、神様の御言葉を用いて、神の民を生み出されます。これは救いの瞬間に起こるものです。イエス様がご自分の羊たちを、それぞれ名を呼んで連れ出してくれるのです。
そして、導き出して終わりではなく、この羊たちが集まって、良い羊飼いの声を聞くとき、これは続いていきます。ジャンカルヴァンはこう言いました。：「牧師には二つの声が必要である。一つは羊を集めるための声、もう一つは狼を追い払うための声である。」
イエス様の地上での働きの中心は、イスラエルの家の失われた羊たちを集めることでした。しかしヨハネ10章16節で、イエス様は、あらゆる国と言語から失われた羊を集める日が来ると預言されました。16 わたしにはまた、この囲いに属さないほかの羊たちがいます。それらも、わたしは導かなければなりません。その羊たちはわたしの声に聞き従います。そして、一つの群れ、一人の牧者となるのです。
これは、使徒の働きの中で、イエス様が任命された使徒たちが福音を宣べ伝えることによって、成就し始めました。しかし、このイエスの言葉は、今でもなお、成就し続けています。日本にも、まだ多くの迷える羊たちがいます。良い羊飼いのその声を聞くのを待っているのです。ではクリスチャンの方々、良い羊飼いは、あなたの声を通して、誰に語りかけようとしているでしょうか？
なぜサタンは羊を惑わし、散らすのでしょうか？
サタンは羊たちを滅ぼしたいからです。
10節でイエス様はこのように語っています。：盗人が来るのは、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするためにほかなりません。わたしが来たのは、羊たちがいのちを得るため、それも豊かに得るためです。
サタンの嘘の一つは、私たちの心の奥深くにまで植え付けられているものですが...「神に完全に従うと、人生は台無しになる」というものです。
同じように、この世も、「豊かな人生とは何か」という独自のアイデアを私たちに売り込んできます。広告は、単に商品を売っているのではなく「理想の人生」を売っています。広告の中の笑顔な人たちは、言葉がなくてもパワフルなメッセージを伝えます。「この商品を買えば、あなたは健康で、賢くて、また尊敬を受け、魅力的で、力のある人になれる」と。
私たちは、イエス様に従うと息苦しくなり、この世の声に従うと自由になれる、と考えがちです。でも本当は、逆です。C・S・ルイスはこのように言います。：この世の人々は驚くほど似通っているが、聖徒たちは驚くほど多様である。従順は自由への道であり、へりくだりは喜びへの道であり、一致は本当の人格への道である。
この世に従えば、他の人と同じように、退屈で予測可能な存在になってしまいます。
しかしイエス様に従えば、あなたは、神様が本来デザインされた独自の美しい作品となるのです。歴史の中でも最も素晴らしい彫刻の一つに、ミケランジェロの「ダビデ像」があります。500年前に、これほどリアルな5メートルもの高さの人間の像を彫り上げたなんて驚きです。あの傑作を生み出すために、ミケランジェロは、大きな大理石の塊から、「ダビデではないもの」をすべて削り取っていきました。皆さんの人生にもイエス様が来られるとき、同じことをなさいます。あなた自身を造られたイエス様だけが、あなたの本来の可能性を完全に知っておられます。ぜひイエス様に、あなたの人生の中で、本来あるべきでないものを削り取っていただいてください。イエス様は、あなたの味方です。でも、あなたの「罪」には敵対してます。最近、こんな言葉を聞きました。：クリスチャンとしての人生の多くは、神が自分の味方だと確信し続けていくプロセスだ。イエス様は、羊たちのためにご自身の命を捨てられることによって、その事実を最もはっきりと示してくださいました。十字架での死を通して、イエス様は救いへの門を開き、豊かないのちへの道を開いてくださいました。イエス様はこのように語ります。：9わたしは門です。だれでも、わたしを通って入るなら救われます。また出たり入ったりして、牧草を見つけます。10 盗人が来るのは、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするためにほかなりません。わたしが来たのは、羊たちがいのちを得るため、それも豊かに得るためです。11 わたしは良い牧者です。良い牧者は羊たちのためにいのちを捨てます。
まだイエス様を信じていない皆さん、救いの門は、今、開かれています。イエス様の声が、あなたを信仰へと招いてくれています。その門に入っていきましょう。そうすれば、牧草地を見つけた羊のように憩うことができます。イエスの羊たちの囲いの中にこそ、本当に安全な場所があります。そこでは、ただ生き延びるだけでなく、健やかに生きることができます。イエス様が来られたのは、私たちがいのちを得るため、それも豊かに得るためです。この救いの狭い門がまだ開かれているうちに入りましょう。やがて、その門が永遠に閉ざされてしまう日が来るからです。
皆さんは、音楽について歌っている歌を聞いたことがあるでしょうか？もしくは、主人公がその物語の作家である小説を読んだことがあるでしょうか？ヨハネ10章で、イエス様は「ご自身の語るメッセージ」について語っておられます。
ここでは、さらに簡潔に、イエス様の声がもたらす影響を見ることができます。
それは、イエスの御声が、羊とヤギとを分裂させる、ということです。（19〜42節）
19 これらのことばのために、ユダヤ人たちの間に再び分裂が生じた。20 彼らのうちの多くの人が言った。「彼は悪霊につかれておかしくなっている。どうしてあなたがたは、彼の言うことを聞くのか。」21 ほかの者たちは言った。「これは悪霊につかれた人のことばではない。見えない人の目を開けることを、悪霊ができるというのか。」
イエス様は批判する人たちに、どのように応答されたでしょうか？
26 あなたがたは信じません。あなたがたがわたしの羊の群れに属していないからです。
ここで注目したいのは、イエス様は「あなたがたは信じないから、羊の群れには属していない」と言っているわけではないということです。そうではなく、「あなたがたがわたしの羊の群れに属していないから、信じていない」ということです。
この分裂は、イエス様がマタイ25章32節で語っている、やがて来たる最後のさばきの前触れです。
32 そして、すべての国の人々が御前に集められます。人の子は、羊飼いが羊をやぎからより分けるように彼らをより分け、
やぎの特徴が「イエスを信じないこと」だとするならば、羊の特徴は何でしょうか？
イエス様は、三つ挙げておられます。27 わたしの羊たちはわたしの声を聞き分けます。わたしもその羊たちを知っており、彼らはわたしについて来ます。
羊たちは、イエスの声を聞き分けます。
ある注解者がこのように書いています。：ある人たちにとっては、イエスの言葉はすべてをはっきりと理解させるものとなる。しかし、また別の人たちにとっては、それは反発を引き起こす爆発のようなものとなる。
しかし同時に、羊は、イエスに「知られている」存在でもあります。
良い羊飼いは、自分の羊の数を正確に知っており、一匹一匹の名前も知っています。羊飼いが知ってくれているから、群れは、他の群れと混ざることがあっても問題ありません。なぜなら羊飼いが呼べば、一匹も失われることなく、すべての羊が戻ってくるからです。なのでイエス様は、ご自分の羊たちについて、このように語られます。28わたしは彼らに永遠のいのちを与えます。彼らは永遠に、決して滅びることがなく、また、だれも彼らをわたしの手から奪い去りはしません。29わたしの父がわたしに与えてくださった者は、すべてにまさって大切です。だれも彼らを、父の手から奪い去ることはできません。30わたしと父とは一つです。
この聖書箇所は、自身の忍耐力ではなく、神の恵みによって信仰が維持される「聖徒の堅忍（けんにん）」という教理を教えています。つまり、まことの信仰を持つ者は決して救いを失うことがない、ということです。しかし私は、忍耐という言葉を使うよりも、保護を意味する「聖徒の保持」という言葉を使うほうが、より適切だと思います。なぜなら、羊が自分で迷わないように努力しているのではなく、羊飼いが羊を守っておられるからです。
最後に、最も重要なのは、羊たちはイエスに従うことです。
最後の場面で、イエスの話を聞いていた人たちは、この比喩を、文字通り、実際の行動で表すことになります。
31 ユダヤ人たちは、イエスを石打ちにしようとして、再び石を取り上げた。32イエスは彼らに答えられた。「わたしは、父から出た多くの良いわざを、あなたがたに示しました。そのうちのどのわざのために、わたしを石打ちにしようとするのですか。」33 ユダヤ人たちはイエスに答えた。「あなたを石打ちにするのは良いわざのためではなく、冒瀆のためだ。あなたは人間でありながら、自分を神としているからだ。」
やぎたちは、イエス様が何を言われても、それに対して反抗します。
しかし羊たちは、イエス様がどこへ行かれようとも、イエス様について行くのです。
40そして、イエスは再びヨルダンの川向こう、ヨハネが初めにバプテスマを授けていた場所に行き、そこに滞在された。41 多くの人々がイエスのところに来た。彼らは「ヨハネは何もしるしを行わなかったが、この方についてヨハネが話したことはすべて真実であった」と言った。42 そして、その地で多くの人々がイエスを信じた。
最後に、永遠の未来に関わる最も大切な問いを、もう一度考えてみたいと思います。
イエス様の御声を聞き分けられますか？
私たちの長女の出産は、非常に大変なものでした。
36時間の陣痛ののち、娘も妻も、追加で医療ケアが必要な状態になりました。生まれて数秒後、私はその場で、必死に処置をしている医師たちの様子を見ていました。愛する家族のために、何もできない無力さを強く感じていたのを覚えています。ぼんやりと座っていると、看護師が何か質問をし、私はそれに答えました。そして、次の瞬間に起こったことを、私は一生忘れません。私の声を聞いた瞬間、生まれたばかりの娘が、ぴたりと泣き止んで、部屋の向こう側から私のほうを見たのです。初めて目が合ったその瞬間、まるでこう言っているかのようでした。「あなたなんだ！私のことを守ってくれるのは、あなたなんだね！」
後から知ったのですが、お腹の中にいる赤ちゃんは、父親の声を聞き分けることができるそうです。父親は母親のお腹の近くで話すことができるので、その声は小さく、こもってはいても、赤ちゃんはその声が分かるそうです。
もしかすると、今日ここにいる皆さんの中にも、イエス様の声が、そのように聞こえているかもしれません。
これまで教会に来たことがなかったとしても……
イエス様の御言葉が、どこか懐かしく感じる。どうしてかは分からないけれど、そんなふうに心に響いている。まるで、イエス様があなたのこれまでの人生の中で、ずっと、かすかに語り続けておられたかのように。
良い羊飼いが、今日、あなたに呼びかけておられます。
あなたは、その御声を聞き分けられるでしょうか？In our text for this morning, John 10, Jesus talks a lot about sheep and shepherds.
Jesus’ original audience would have known this well, but for us it's a little less familiar.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen a sheep in real life.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever met an actual shepherd.
…so we need a little context.
One Bible scholar writes this.
“One of the most striking characteristics of the shepherd-sheep relationship is that control over the flock is exercised simply by the sound of the shepherd’s voice.”
Jesus is the Good Shepherd who leads, protects, and lays down his life for his sheep.
And so the question John 10 would have you ask is this…
Are you one of Jesus’ sheep?
Can you recognize the sound of the Good Shepherds’ voice?
To answer that question, let’s consider two effects of the voice of Jesus.
What happens at the sound of Jesus’ voice?
First, the voice of Jesus reveals the difference between the schemes of Satan and the work of God (v1-19).
Jesus is teaching the crowds at a Jewish festival, which would later be called Hannukah.
And v6 says Jesus uses a “figure of speech”, to describe his relationship with his people.
In this figure of speech...
Jesus is the shepherd.
Believers are the sheep.
Thieves, robbers, and wolves are the activity of Satan.
Satan, or the Devil is an evil spiritual being who opposes God and his people.
And Jesus’ figure of speech teaches us a lot about Satan’s strategies.
Like how Satan appoints careless shepherds.
In v1, Jesus says: Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.
Verse 1 is a severe criticism of Israel’s religious leadership.
Jesus says thieves and robbers have broken into the sheepfold of Israel.
Men God has not appointed have become spiritual leaders over God’s people.
Down in v9, Jesus refers to himself as the door which you enter to be saved.
But the scariest part is these religious leaders didn’t enter by the door, but by another way…that is, they’re not saved!
What happens when unsaved, Satanically-appointed men presume to lead God’s people?
Disaster.
12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
Take out lots of soldiers and you win the battle.
Take out the general and you win the war.
Which is why “strike the shepherd, scatter the sheep” is one of Satan’s oldest tricks.
Countless people have been hurt by pastors who are bullies.
Countless churches have been destroyed by leaders who had a moral failure.
And Satan uses these bad examples to cultivate distrust in faithful shepherds.
But for Jesus, the solution to bad leaders is not no leaders.
After his resurrection, Jesus charges the Apostle Peter to “feed my sheep.”
And in his letters, we see Peter understood himself to be a shepherd of the flock of God, with Jesus as the chief shepherd
Jesus feeds his people through under-shepherds.
If you asked most Christians “how can you hear the voice of Jesus today?”, there’d be two basic answers.
Subjective spiritual impressions
Personal Bible Study
And those are good answers!
But if those are the only way Jesus speaks, aren’t we in danger of a faith that’s subjective and individualistic?
Which is why to hear Jesus, we also need to hear…
The Word faithfully preached
This doesn't mean whatever the pastor says is right.
Pastoral authority ends where the Word of God does.
But it does mean you should come to church expecting to hear from Jesus.
Those who listened to the Apostle Paul’s preaching in Acts 17 got this balance right.
They received the word with all eagerness examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
Satan doesn’t just attack proclaimers of the message, he attacks the message itself.
Satan sends false messiahs.
Jesus says: 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers… 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
Jesus criticized the Jewish religious leaders as hired hands… who care nothing for the sheep.
But now in v8, Jesus talks about false messiahs. He says “all who came before me are thieves and robbers.”
Not only did many false messiahs come before Jesus, he warned many would come after him too.
Matthew 24:24– For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
The scariest Wikipedia page I’ve ever read is “List of people who claimed to be Jesus.”
It's an extremely long list of extremely bad people.
One such person is Hong Xiuquan who had a vision in 1843 that led him to believe he was the younger brother of Jesus.
He started the Taiping Rebellion which killed 30 million people, 10% of China’s population.
As a result, China was hardened to Christianity for over a century.
But the problem is not just individuals who claim to be Jesus, but groups that proclaim a false Jesus.
Mormonism, which was invented in America, is a polytheistic, non-Christian religion that uses Christian words.
They send thousands of missionaries all over the world to proclaim a false “Jesus” who is just one of many gods.
A less extreme but just as dangerous example would be so-called “Christian” schools all over the world that present a boring and domesticated Jesus who looks nothing like the biblical Christ.
They give people just enough Jesus to think they know him, but not enough to see why he matters.
Martin Luther said “wherever God builds a church, Satan builds a chapel right next to it.”
That is, Satan uses counterfeit gospels to reduce interest in the real thing.
For years I wasn’t very impressed with ramen.
I would try ramen at restaurants in America and think “why do people like this so much?”
“Why is this so expensive and yet so…bland?”
Then, I had ramen in Fukuoka.
“How is this so cheap, and yet so amazing?”
The true sheep of God do not know the voice of strangers.
They don’t settle for “Ramen in America” Jesus.
They can taste when it's not the real thing.
A church once had a pastor who drifted from the gospel.
He was highly educated and could prove his arguments from Scripture.
The church couldn’t beat him in a debate or explain exactly what was wrong, but they knew it wasn’t faithful teaching.
Eventually, they confronted the pastor and he left the church.
A Christian may not read big books by dead theologians.
But they can hear bad teaching and think “I can’t quite place it… but that’s not my Master’s voice.”
False teaching and bad leaders destroy the faith of thousands.
But isolation destroys the faith of millions.
Which is why Satan loves to scatter the sheep.
What does the wolf do when he has his way with the sheep?
12b … and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
Sheep are herd animals whose instinct is to flock together. They know they’re safest inside the flock.
And if you’re a wolf, do you target a whole pack of sheep?
Or, do you go after the one stray sheep by itself?
0.45% of Japan’s population are Protestant Christians.
But just 0.22% attend a Protestant church.
That means only about half of those who identify as Protestant are actually part of a local church.
…what if one of Satan’s main strategies to keep people ignorant of the gospel in Japan is to scatter the sheep?
The voice of the Good Shepherd gathers the sheep Satan has scattered.
3b The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to create the people of God.
We see this at the moment of salvation, when Jesus calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
But this continues to happen as the sheep gather to hear the Good Shepherd’s voice.
John Calvin says: The pastor ought to have two voices: one, for gathering the sheep; and another for driving away the wolves.
Jesus' focus during his ministry was to gather the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
But in John 10:16, he predicted a day where his voice would gather his lost sheep from all nations and languages.
16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
This began to be fulfilled as the apostles Jesus appointed preached the gospel in the book of Acts.
But Jesus' words are still being fulfilled today.
There are many lost sheep in Japan, just waiting to hear the sound of the Good Shepherd's voice.
And Christian…who does the Good Shepherd want to speak to through your voice?
Why does Satan deceive and scatter the sheep?
Because Satan wants to destroy the sheep!
Jesus says in v10: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
One of Satan’s core lies, deeply implanted in all our hearts is this…
Obeying God fully will ruin your life.
The world, likewise, tries to sell us its version of abundant life.
They say advertisements don’t sell products, they sell the good life.
Smiling faces in the ads convey a powerful message without words.
“Buy our product and you’ll be fit… smart… respected… attractive… and powerful.”
We think listening to Jesus will suffocate us, but listening to the world will liberate us.
But really, it's the opposite.
CS Lewis says: The worldlings are so monotonously alike compared with the almost fantastic variety of the saints. Obedience is the road to freedom, humility the road to pleasure, unity the road to personality.
Follow the world, and you’ll become as boring and predictable as everyone else.
Follow Jesus, and you’ll become the original and beautiful masterpiece he designed you to be.
One of the greatest sculptures of all time is David by Michelangelo.
For a person 500 years ago to carve a 5-meter-tall statue with realistic human features is impressive.
To create the masterpiece we see today, Michelangelo took a massive piece of marble and carved away everything that wasn’t David.
Friends, when Jesus comes into your life… he does the same thing.
Only Jesus, the one who created you, knows your full potential.
Let Jesus take his chisel and cut away everything in your life he didn’t design to be there.
You see, Jesus is not against you.
Jesus is against your sin.
I heard it said recently: “a lot of the Christian life is just becoming convinced that God is not against you.”
And the ultimate way Jesus proves that is by laying down his life for the sheep.
Through his death on the cross, Jesus opens the door to salvation and abundant life.
Jesus says: 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Non-Christian friends, the door of salvation is open.
The voice of Jesus is calling you to enter by faith.
Enter, and you’ll be like a sheep that’s found pasture.
In the sheepfold of Jesus, you’ll find the only place you’re truly safe.
You won’t just survive, but thrive.
Jesus came so you can have life and have it abundantly.
Enter the narrow door of salvation while it's still open.
Because the day’s coming when the door will be shut… forever.
Have you ever heard a song… about music?
Have you ever read a novel where the main character’s an author?
Well in John 10, Jesus preaches a sermon about… his sermons.
And here we see, much more briefly, the other effect of the voice of Jesus.
The voice of Jesus creates a division between the sheep and the goats (v19-42).
19 There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
How does Jesus answer his critics?
26 But you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.
Notice Jesus doesn’t say… “you are not sheep because you do not believe.”
No, Jesus says “you do not believe because you are not…sheep."
This division is a preview of the final judgment, which Jesus talks about in Matthew 25:32.
32 Before him [Jesus] will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
Now if the distinctive trait of goats is unbelief in Jesus, what is distinctive of sheep?
Jesus lists three things.
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
The sheep hear Jesus.
One commentator writes: For some, Jesus' words cause everything to fall into place. For others, they are an explosion that provokes a counterattack.
But the sheep are also known by Jesus.
A good shepherd knows the exact number and all the names of his sheep.
He knows his flock so well they can mix with another with no issues.
After mingling with another flock, he just calls and they all come without a single one being left behind.
Which is why Jesus says this about his sheep.
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.
This text teaches a doctrine called perseverance of the saints.
That is, no true believer can ever lose their salvation.
And that’s true, but I think a better term would be preservation of the saints.
Because it's not the sheep who keep themselves from being lost… the shepherd does.
Last and most importantly, the sheep follow Jesus.
At the conclusion, the people listening to Jesus literally and physically act out his figure of speech.
31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”
The goats oppose Jesus in whatever he says.
But the sheep follow Jesus wherever he goes.
40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in him there.
To close, let's consider again the most eternally significant question a person could ask.
Can you hear the voice of Jesus?
The birth process of our oldest daughter was extremely difficult.
After 36 hours of labor, both my daughter and wife needed extra medical attention.
Seconds after the birth, I was sitting there watching the doctors urgently working.
I remember the feeling of powerlessness to help the people I love.
As I was sitting there dazing out, a nurse asked a question, and I answered.
And I’ll never forget what happened next.
At the sound of my voice, my newborn baby immediately stopped crying and looked at me from across the room.
As our eyes met for the very first time, it was as if she said… “It's you! You’re the one who’s supposed to take care of me!!!”
I later learned unborn babies can actually recognize the sound of their father’s voice.
Since the Father can talk close to the mother’s belly, though its faint and muffled, the baby can recognize his voice.
And maybe that’s what the voice of Jesus sounds like for some here today.
You might have never been to church until today, but…
The words of Jesus seem familiar, even though you can’t quite explain why.
It's almost like Jesus has been speaking faintly in the background of your entire life.
The Good Shepherd is calling you this morning.
Can you hear the sound of his voice?
