ジョージ・ホワイトフィールドは、歴史上最も偉大な説教者の一人です。

彼は、1730年代のアメリカ植民地で起こった大リバイバル——第一次大覚醒（グレートアウェイクニング）運動の中心人物でした。

当時のアメリカ人口の約80％が、彼の説教を聞いたと言われています。

そんな彼の親友の一人が、アメリカ建国の父として知られるベンジャミン・フランクリンでした。

フランクリン自身は、キリスト教の信仰を受け入れることはありませんでした。

でも彼は、自分の新聞「フィラデルフィア・ガゼット」の一面に、ホワイトフォールドの説教を45本も掲載したのです。

さらに、他の教会リーダーたちからホワイトフィールドが攻撃された時には、彼を擁護する記事まで書きました。

フランクリンは、ホワイトフィールドの説教を聞き、支え、時には守りさえしました。

そして、彼はホワイトフィールドの説教によって、何千人もの人の人生が神様によって変えられていくのを見ていたのです。

それでも最後まで——彼自身は信じませんでした。

ヨハネ12章では、さらに偉大なお方であるイエス・キリストを、もっと近くで見ていた人たちが登場します。

彼らは3年間、イエス様の教えを聞き、奇跡を目撃しました。

人類史上、最も説得力のあるキリスト教信仰の証拠を、最前列で見ていたのです。

それなのに——彼らもイエス様を拒みました。

どうしてそんなことが起こるのでしょうか？

なぜ人は、「信じる理由」が十分にあるにもかかわらず、それでも信じようとしないのでしょうか？

今日は、「信仰・信じることの神学」について考えたいと思います。

あなたが “信じること” をどう理解しているかによって、あなたの行動は大きく左右します。

もしかすると、あなたは今、誠実にキリスト教を探し求めている最中かもしれません。

その場合、「自分が信じるためには何が必要だと思っているか」が、信じることへの向き合い方を決めます。

あるいは、あなたはクリスチャンで、他の人にもイエス様を知ってほしいと願っている方かもしれません。

「神学は、方法論を決める」のです。

そして、“信じること”について間違った理解を持っているとき、あなたは何をするにも自分の決断を疑ってしまいます。

「これをしたら、相手は信じるだろうか？」

「あんなこと言ったら、逆に離れていってしまうかな？」

では、ヨハネ12章から、「信じることについての4つの誤解」を見ていきましょう。

誤解①「信じることは、安心して先延ばしできる。」（34〜36a節）

34 そこで、群衆はイエスに答えた。「私たちは律法によって、キリストはいつまでも生きると聞きましたが、あなたはどうして、人の子は上げられなければならないと言われるのですか。その人の子とはだれですか。」

メシア、あるいは キリストというのは、旧約聖書を通して預言されていた救い主のことです。

しかし群衆は、「メシアはイスラエルの敵を滅ぼし、すぐに地上で神の王国を打ち立てる存在だ」と期待していました。

なのでイエス様が、十字架で死ぬということを意味して「自分は上げられる」と語った時、人々はそれを “メシア” という主張と結びつけることができなかったのです。

次にイエス様が語られる言葉は、一見すると “質問への答え” になっていません。

イエス様は、群衆の質問の “内容” に対して直接答えるのではなく、その質問の背後にある “心” に向き合われるのです。

35　そこで、イエスは彼らに言われた。「もうしばらく、光はあなたがたの間にあります。闇があなたがたを襲うことがないように、あなたがたは光があるうちに歩きなさい。闇の中を歩く者は、自分がどこに行くのか分かりません。 36 自分に光があるうちに、光の子どもとなれるように、光を信じなさい。」

“光” であるイエス様は、十字架へ向かおうとしておられました。

だからイエス様は群衆に「光が去ってしまい、闇があなたがたを襲ってしまう前に、信じなさい」と警告されたのです。

クリスチャンではない方々、イエス様を信じるという招きは、“期間限定”です。

光は、霊的に理解していることを表しています。

闇は、霊的な 盲目さを表しています。

もし今あなたに、少しでも “光” が見え始めているならば、もしイエス様についてもっと知りたいと感じているならば—ぜひ、その機会をつかんでください！

「今は忙しいから、神様のことはまた後で考えよう」とか、そんなふうに思わないでください。

なぜなら、その“後で”が来るとは限らないからです。

「神様のことは、棚の上に置いておいて、自分の準備ができた時にまた取り出せばいい」と思っているかもしれません。

でも、もしそうし続けるならば——闇があなた...を襲い、やがて神様そのものに興味を持てなくなってしまうかもしれません。

あなたには予測できないある日、あなたは死ぬか、もしくはキリストが再び来られます。

そして、もしイエス様への信仰がないなら、あなたは やり直しのきかないまま、神様の裁きの前に立つことになるのです。

2018年、タイで12人の少年たちが浸水した洞窟に閉じ込められてしまう事故がありました。

彼らは探検をしていた時、突然のモンスーンによって洞窟が水で満たされ、出口を失ってしまいました。

1週間、彼らは完全な暗闇の中で待ち続けました。

酸素は減り続け、水位も再び上がり始めていました。

そして彼らは、1万人規模の救助作戦が進められていたことを知りませんでした。

ダイバーたちは、水中トンネルを5キロ泳いで彼らの元へ向かいました。

その6人のダイバーたちは、彼らにとって唯一の救いの希望でした。

少年たちは、自分たちの命を完全にダイバーに委ねなければなりませんでした。

決断を先延ばしにすることは確実な死を意味していました。

幸い、12人全員が信頼することを選び、救出されました。

皆さん、この “光” であるイエス様は、あなたを救うために天から来てくださいました。

今、闇の洪水が、あなたを飲み込もうと迫っています。

イエス様だけが、救われる唯一の道です。

“今”という時が、あなたに与えられている唯一のチャンスかもしれません。

だから、この機会をつかみ、信じ、もっと知ってみてください。

そのための、シンプルな方法が３つあります。

まず一つ目は、礼拝後すぐに行われる、無料の「ファーストステップのクラス」に参加することです。

ファーストステップでは、キリスト教の基本を、日本語または英語で学ぶことができます。

二つ目は礼拝後にクリスチャンの誰かと会話し、キリスト教について質問してみることです。

もし今ここに、「ノンクリスチャンの方とイエス様について話したい！」と思っているクリスチャンの方々がいたら、手を挙げてもらえますか？

そのまま挙げたままでいてください。

ノンクリスチャンの方々、周りを見てください。

こんなにもたくさんの人たちが、あなたとイエス様について話したいと思っているんです。

三つ目は、毎週、教会で一緒にヨハネの福音書を学ぶことです。

今年の夏は、毎週日曜日同じ時間、同じ場所で、ヨハネの福音書全体を一緒に学んでいきます。

でもここで大事なのは——“信じる機会をつかむ”ためには、「信じる対象」を知る必要があるということです。

少なくとも、「イエスが何者なのか」について、基本的な理解は必要です。

でももしあなたが、「絶対に反論できない、完璧な証拠が出たら信じます」と思っているなら——

その基準が満たされる日は、決して来ません。

そこで次の “信じることについての誤解” に進みます。

誤解②「信じることは、証拠のみによって生み出される。」(36b-41節)

36b イエスは、これらのことを話すと、立ち去って彼らから身を隠された。

イエス様は、もう語るべきことを語り終えたので、群衆から退かれます。

もう質問に答える時ではなく、“決断する時”なのです。

36節は、イエス様の公での働きの終わりを示しています。

なぜでしょうか？

37 イエスがこれほど多くのしるしを彼らの目の前で行われたのに、彼らはイエスを信じなかった。

この人たちは、イエス様が奇跡的に5,000人に食事を与え、目の見えない人が見えるようにし、死者をよみがえらせるのを見ました。

イエス様以上の説教者を思いつくでしょうか？

死人を生き返らせる以上に、印象的なことがあるでしょうか？

これ以上、何を求めれるでしょうか？

それなのに——彼らは信じませんでした。

ここでヨハネは、初代教会の大きな問いに向き合おうとしています。

「もしイエスがユダヤ人のメシアならば、なぜ 多くのユダヤ人が彼を拒絶したのか？」

私たちも、似たような問いを持つかもしれません。

「もし福音が真理ならば、なぜ、特に日本では、多くの人がそれを拒むのか？」

ヨハネは、こうした問いにどう答えるのでしょうか？

なぜ、イエス様の言葉を直接聞いた人たちでさえ、彼を拒んだのか？

38 それは、預言者イザヤのことばが成就するためであった。彼はこう言っている。「主よ。私たちが聞いたことを、だれが信じたか。主の御腕はだれに現れたか。」

ヨハネは、旧約聖書の預言者イザヤを引用しながら、「メシアが拒絶されること」さえも、すべて神様のご計画の中にあったことを示しています。

だからこそヨハネは、39節でこう言うのです——

39 …なので、彼らは信じることができなかったのである。

人は、自分の力だけでは、神様に応答することは全くできないのです。

神様は、人間を自由意志を持つ存在として造られました。

しかし、人類が堕落して以来、その意志は、罪に囚われてしまいました。

自由意志とは、「自分の 願望・欲求に従って行動する能力」のことです。

しかし、罪は人間の願望そのものを腐敗させてしまいました。

私たちの願望は、生まれながらに罪へと曲がっているのです。

だから私たちは、神様が介入してくださらない限り、自分の力では神様を選ぶことができません。

だからこそイエス様は、ヨハネ6:44でこう言われます——

わたしを遣わされた父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできません。

アメリカでは、犬が逃げ出さないように “目に見えないフェンス” を使う人が多くいます。

庭の境界線に電波発信機が埋められていて、

また、犬には、境界線を越えようとすると、電気ショックを与える首輪がつけられています。

犬自身は、「なぜそこから先へ行けないのか」分かっていません。

ただ、“行けない”んです。

そして当然、犬には親指がないので、自分で首輪を外すこともできません。

罪ある人間の本質は、この電気ショックの首輪のようなものです。

クリスチャンではない人が、聖書を読んだり、教会に来たり、福音を聞いたりすると——

ある境界線にぶつかって、“ショック”を受けます。

真理を聞くたびに、心の中の小さな声が「そんなのありえない…」と言うのです。

「それ、あなたの人生には関係ない…」

「自分がそんなこと信じるわけない…」

私たちは、自分では自由になれない、罪に囚われた無力な奴隷なのです。

でも、ここで福音の良い知らせがあります。

イエス様が来られたのは、その奴隷状態から人々を解放するためだったということです！

イエス様はこのように語っています。：罪を行っている者はみな、罪の奴隷です。...しかし...子があなたがたを自由にするなら、あなたがたは本当に自由になるのです。

イエス様は、あなたの首輪を引きちぎってくださるから、あなたは自由に神様を追い求めて行くことができるようになるんです。

……しかし、40節を見ると、中には罪から解放されない人たちもいます。

イザヤはまた次のように言っている...40 「主は彼らの目を見えないようにされた。また、彼らの心を頑なにされた。彼らがその目で見ることも、心で理解することも、立ち返ることもないように。そして、わたしが彼らを癒やすこともないように。」

イエス様が群衆から身を引かれたのは、それまでの不信仰に対する裁きの行動でした。

群衆が、その教えを拒んだので、イエス様は、教えることをやめられたのでした。

この裁きは、“受動的”なものです。

イエス様がもうこれ以上、ご自分を現されないと選択することによって、結果的には、彼らの目を見えないようにされ、彼らの心を頑なにされました。

もちろん、誰でもイエス様を信じるよう招かれています。

でもイエス様はこうも言われました。

「招かれる人は多いが、選ばれる人は少ないのです。」

神様は、ご自分が選ばれた者を、積極的に救いへと引き寄せてくださいます。

一方で、選ばれていない者に対しては、そのまま通り過ぎられるのです。

もしこれを聞いて不公平だと感じるならば、覚えていて欲しいことがあります。

神様が “通り過ぎられる” 人たちは、道徳的に中立で無実の人ではありません。

聖書は、罪のゆえに、すべての人が死と地獄に値すると語っています。

つまり、神様の選びというのは「同じように滅びに向かっている人々の中で区別をされる」ということなのです。

たとえば、10人の殺人犯が有罪判決を受け、死刑を待っているとします。

その中で憐れみを受けた5人だけが 免罪されたとします。

残りの5人は、正当な法的刑罰を受け、処刑されます。

法的に言えば、有罪の5人を赦さなかったとしても、不正は何一つ行われていません。

元々全員が裁きに値していました。しかし、その中の何人かが憐れみを受けたにすぎないのです。

ここまでは、神様の主権を強調してきましたが、同時に人間の責任を忘れてはいけません。

39節には、「群衆は信じることができなかった」と書かれていて、これは、神様が働きかけてくださる必要があることを強調しています。

でも37節では、「群衆は信じなかった」とあり、人間は道徳的な選択を本当にしているということを示しています。

まとめると...

もし人が救われるならば、その栄光は神様のものです。

でも、もし人が滅びるならば、その責任は人間にあります。

聖書は、この二つをどちらも真理として教えていますが、ただ、その二つが “どう完全に噛み合うのか” までは説明していません。

私たちは、聖書が語っていないことまで推測するべきではないということです。

でも、私たちにできることはあります。それは、だれに対しても福音を宣べ伝え、その結果は神様に委ねるということです。

チャールズ・スポルジョンはこのように言いました。

「もし神様が、選ばれた人たちの背中に黄色い線を引いておられたならば、私は道を歩き回って、人のシャツをめくり、その黄色い線を探しただろう。そして、その人たちにだけ福音を語っただろう。でも神様は、そうはされなかった。神様は私に、“だれでも望む者は来なさい” と、”すべての人に福音を宣べ伝えよ”と言われたのだ。」

しかし、どうすれば「その人が本当に福音に応答した」のか分かるのでしょうか？

日本のように、クリスチャンになることに対して社会的代償がある場所では、“信仰”の定義を薄めてしまいやすいです。

そのことに関して、誤解③「信仰は、個人的なものとして隠しておける。」ということを考えてみましょう。（42〜43節）

先日、私は軽率にも SNS のコメント欄を読んでしまいました。

そこでは、「日本でキリスト教が広がりにくい理由」について議論されていました。

その中の一つが、仏教や神道の儀式に参加するよう求める “家族からの圧力” です。

また、日本で何十年も宣教しているある西洋の宣教師が、こう書いていました。

クリスチャンとして仏教的な家族行事を果たすことには何の問題もない。

こういう “見せかけのクリスチャンらしさ” へのこだわりこそが、日本人にクリスチャンをちょっと変な人たちだと思わせる原因だ。もしあなた自身が仏教を信じていないなら、どれだけ仏教的行為をしても、仏教徒になるわけではない。

つまり彼は、「信仰とは心の中の個人的な問題だ」と言っているのです。

「たしかに、偶像や偽りの神々に頭を下げているように見えるかもしれない。

でも神様は私の心を知っておられるから大丈夫だ。」

この宣教師にとって、“外側の行動に何の影響も与えない個人的信仰” は「何の問題もない」んです。

……でも、それはイエス様にとっても “問題ない” のでしょうか？

ヨハネが、福音書ではっきり語っているのは、イエス様には、“隠れた弟子” はいないということです。

42しかし、それにもかかわらず、議員たちの中にもイエスを信じた者が多くいた。ただ、会堂から追放されないように、パリサイ人たちを気にして、告白しなかった。

これは、決してポジティブな判断ではありません。

ここで言われている “個人的信仰” は、単なる知的同意であって、聖書が語る信仰ではないのです。

多くの人は、「イエスの言っていることは正しい」と認めることまではできましたが、それを公に告白する覚悟を持つ人は、ほとんどいませんでした。

なぜでしょうか？

43彼らは、神からの栄誉よりも、人からの栄誉を愛したのである。

不信仰な心の中では、人が大きく、神様が小さくなっていきます。

彼らは、人との調和を求めるあまり、神様との平和を忘れてしまったのです。

でも、本物の信仰は、どんな代償があっても、“人を喜ばせること”より、“神様を喜ばせること”を優先します。

先ほど話に触れた宣教師は、「内側の信仰」と「外側の行動」を切り離して考えていました。

でも聖書は、決してそのようには語りません。

イエス様はこう言われます...

心に満ちていることを口が話すのです。

あなたがたは彼らを実によって見分けることになります。

あなたの言葉や行動は、あなたの心の中を映し出す窓です。

たとえば、誰かが銃を突きつけてセブンイレブンで強盗したとします。

その人は逮捕されます。

でも、このようにその人は弁解します。

「いやいや、違うんです。あなたたちは分かっていない。私の心の中では、私は法を守る市民なんです。私は犯罪者じゃない。だから、どれだけ 犯罪行為をしても、犯罪者になるわけじゃない。」

……そんな理屈は通りません。外側に現れる罪深い行動は、たとえ心の意図がどうであれ、やはり罪なのです。

偶像にひれ伏すならば、その行動はあなたを偶像礼拝者にしてしまいます。

でも、イエス様を告白するならば、それは、あなたが本当の弟子であることを示すのです。

ローマ人への手紙 10:9にはこのように書いてあります。”なぜなら、もしあなたの口でイエスを主と告白し、あなたの心で神はイエスを死者の中からよみがえらせたと信じるなら、あなたは救われるからです。”

「イエスは主です」という言葉は、ただ口に出して言えば、自動的に救われるといったような “魔法の言葉” ではありません。

むしろ、「イエスを自分の主として、公に告白することを喜んで行う人」は、自分が救われている確信を持っているはずだ、ということです。

逆に言えば、ある人が「イエスを信じています」と言いながらも

公にクリスチャンだと名乗ることを完全に拒み、

洗礼を受けることを拒み、

目に見える教会での交わりを拒み続けるならば

その人は、自分が本当に救われていることに、あまり確信を持つべきではありません。

ここまで私たちは、「信じること」についての危険な誤解を見てきました。

「後で信じればいい」という誤解。「もっと証拠があれば信じられる」という誤解。

そして、「信仰は隠しておける」という誤解。

最後に、最も危険な誤解について考えたいと思います。

誤解④「不信仰は、決して変えられない。」（44〜50節）

44イエスは大きな声でこう言われた。「わたしを信じる者は、わたしではなく、わたしを遣わされた方を信じるのです。45 また、わたしを見る者は、わたしを遣わされた方を見るのです。46わたしは光として世に来ました。わたしを信じる者が、だれも闇の中にとどまることのないようにするためです。

イエス様を信じるということは、神様を信じることです。

イエス様を見るということは、神様を見るということです。

もし神様の栄光が、目を焼くほどまぶしい皆既日食のようなものだとしたら、イエス・キリストは、その光を見るための “日食グラス” のようなお方です。

イエス様こそ、神様を知るための道なのです。

では、そのイエス様を知るための道とは何なのでしょうか？

それは、イエス様のことばです。

47だれか、わたしのことばを聞いてそれを守らない者がいても、わたしはその人をさばきません。わたしが来たのは世をさばくためではなく、世を救うためだからです。48 わたしを拒み、わたしのことばを受け入れない者には、その人をさばくものがあります。わたしが話したことば、それが、終わりの日にその人をさばきます。

47〜50節で、イエス様は “ことば” や “話すこと” について、11回も言及されています。

なぜなら、すべては「あなたがイエス様のことばにどう応答するか」にかかっているからです。

でも、ここに good news（良い知らせ）があります。

イエス様のことばそのものが——私たちを、「イエス様のことばを信じる信仰」へ導いてくれるのです。

イエス様はこのように言われました：63いのちを与えるのは御霊です。肉は何の益ももたらしません。わたしがあなたがたに話してきたことばは、霊であり、またいのちです。

聖書に書かれていることばこそが、最後の日に、あなたを救うことにも、裁くことにもなるのです。

そして、このことばには、不信仰を信仰へと変える力があります。

あなたはこのことばに、どう応答するでしょうか？

George Whitefield is one of the greatest preachers who ever lived.

He was a central figure in the Great Awakening, a revival that swept through colonial America in the 1730s.

It's estimated that 80% of the American population heard Whitefield preach.

One of his closest friends was the American Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin.

Franklin personally rejected the Christian faith. But he printed 45 of Whitefield's sermons on the front page of his newspaper, The Philadelphia Gazette.

He wrote articles defending Whitefield against attacks from other church leaders.

Franklin heard, supported, and even defended Whitefield.

He watched God change thousands of lives through Whitefield's preaching.

But in the end… he never believed.

In John 12, we meet people who were even closer to someone much greater… Jesus Christ.

For three years, they heard Jesus’ teaching and saw his miracles.

They had front-row seats to the most compelling case for the Christian faith in human history.

And yet… they rejected him.

How do you explain that?

How can someone have every reason to believe… yet refuse to do so?

Today I wanna consider… a theology of belief.

What you believe about belief shapes what you do.

Maybe you're sincerely exploring Christianity…

…what you think it will take for you to believe determines how you approach the faith.

Or maybe you're a Christian who wants others to know Jesus…

Theology determines methodology.

And a faulty theology of belief will keep you second-guessing every move.

"If we do this, will it make them believe?”

“If I say that, will I push them away?"

So from John 12, let’s look at Four Myths About Belief.

Myth #1: Belief can be safely delayed (34-36a).

34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

The Messiah, or Christ, was a savior prophesied all throughout the Old Testament.

But the crowds expected the Messiah would destroy the enemies of Israel and immediately set up an earthly kingdom of God.

So when Jesus spoke of being lifted up, dying on a cross, they couldn’t reconcile it with his claim to be Messiah.

What Jesus says next is a non-response.

He doesn’t address the content of the crowd's question, but the heart behind it.

35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

Jesus, the light, is headed for the cross.

So he warns the crowds… believe before the light is gone and darkness overtakes you.

Non-Christians, the invitation to believe in Jesus is 期間限定, a limited time offer.

Light represents spiritual understanding.

Darkness represents spiritual blindness.

If you’re starting to see the light at any level, if you’re interested in learning more about Jesus… seize that opportunity!

Beware of thinking… “I’ll worry about God later when I’m less busy.”

Because there might be no later.

You say “I’ll put God over here on this shelf and then whenever I’m ready I can find him.”

But if you try that… the darkness might overtake you such that you'll never end up being interested in God again.

On a day you can't predict, you will either die or…Christ will return.

And without faith in Jesus, you will face God's judgment with no second chance.

In 2018, twelve Thai boys became trapped in a flooded cave.

They were exploring when a sudden monsoon filled the cave with water, cutting off the exit.

For a week they waited in complete darkness.

Their oxygen was running out, and the flood waters were rising once again.

What they didn't know was that a rescue operation involving 10,000 people was underway.

The divers swam five kilometers through an underwater tunnel to reach them.

The six men who swam down were the only hope of salvation.

The boys had to completely entrust themselves to the divers.

To delay choosing… meant certain death.

Thankfully, all twelve boys chose to trust and were rescued.

Friends…Jesus, the light, has come down from heaven to rescue you.

A flood of darkness is closing in to overtake you.

Jesus is the only way to be saved.

Right now could be your only chance.

Seize the opportunity to believe, or at least…to learn more.

Here’s three simple ways you can do that.

First, you can come to our free First Steps class, happening right after the service.

Second, you can talk to a Christian after the service and ask them questions about Christianity.

If you’re here this morning and you’re a Christian who’d be excited to talk with a non-Christian about Jesus, would you raise your hand now?

Keep them up…

Non-Christian friends, look around…

…so many people would love to talk to you about Jesus!

Third, you can study the Gospel of John with our church each week.

For the rest of the summer, same time and place every week, we’ll be walking through the entire Gospel of John.

But here's the thing…seizing the opportunity to believe requires knowing what you're believing in.

You need at least a basic understanding of who Jesus is.

And yet, if you're waiting for airtight, unassailable proof before you'll believe…

…that standard will never be met.

Which leads to our next myth about belief.

Myth #2: Belief can be produced by evidence alone (36b-41).

36b When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.

Jesus has said his peace, so he withdraws from the crowds.

He’s done answering questions, it's time to decide.

Verse 36 marks the end of Jesus' public ministry.

Why?

37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him.

These people have watched Jesus miraculously feed 5,000 people, open the eyes of the blind, and raise the dead.

Can you name a better preacher than Jesus?

Is there anything more impressive than raising the dead?

What more could you possibly want?

And yet…they didn’t believe.

John is about to address a major question in the early church.

“If Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, why did so many Jews reject him?”

We might ask a similar question.

“If the gospel is true, why do so many people reject it, especially in Japan?”

Here’s how John answers these kinds of questions.

Why did Jesus’ hearers reject him?

38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

John points to the Old Testament prophet Isaiah to show the Messiah being rejected… is all according to God’s plan.

Which is why John says in v39…

39 Therefore they could not believe.

In his own power… fallen man is totally unable to respond to God.

God created man with free will.

But ever since the fall of humanity… the will is bound by sin.

Free will is the ability to act according to your desires.

But sin has corrupted humanity’s desires.

Our desires are by nature bent towards sin.

Which means we can’t choose God… unless… God intervenes.

Which is why Jesus says in John 6:44…

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.

Many Americans use an invisible fence to keep their dog from running away.

Radio transmitters are buried at the borders of the yard.

The dog wears a shock collar which shocks them whenever they try to run past the boundary.

The dog doesn’t know why it can’t go past a certain point…that’s just how it is.

And of course the dog has no thumbs, so it can’t take off the collar.

Sinful human nature is like that shock collar.

When a non-Christian, reads the Bible… comes to church, or… hears the gospel…

…they hit a boundary and get shocked.

Whenever they hear the truth, a little voice says “that’s crazy”...

…“that’s irrelevant to your life”...

…“you could never believe that!”

We are helpless slaves who can’t free ourselves.

But here’s the good news of the gospel, don’t miss this!

Jesus came to set the slaves free!

He says: everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin…but…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Jesus rips off your shock collar, so you can run free after God.

…but there are some that are not set free from sin… v40.

For again Isaiah said, 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”

Jesus withdrawing himself from the crowds was an act of judgment against prior unbelief.

The crowds rejected the teaching, so Jesus stopped teaching.

This judgment is passive.

By choosing to not reveal himself anymore, Jesus effectively blinds their eyes and hardens their hearts.

Anyone and everyone is invited to believe in Jesus.

But, as Jesus says, “many are called, but few are chosen.”

God actively draws his elect to salvation.

The non-elect he passes over.

If that sounds unfair, keep this in mind.

Those who God passes over are not morally neutral, innocent people.

The Bible says that because of sin, everyone deserves death and hell.

So God’s choice… distinguishes between people equally lost.

Imagine 10 people are found guilty of murder and await execution.

As an act of mercy, 5 are pardoned for their crime.

The remaining 5 face the just legal penalty and are executed.

Legally speaking… no wrong has been done in NOT pardoning the five of the guilty criminals.

All deserved justice… but some got mercy.

Now in highlighting God’s sovereignty, we must not forget man’s responsibility.

Verse 39 says the crowds could not believe in Jesus, emphasizing the need for God to act.

But verse 37 says the crowds did not believe, showing people make real moral choices.

In sum…

If man is saved, God gets the glory.

But if man is lost, man gets the blame.

The Bible teaches both truths without fully explaining how they fit together.

We shouldn’t speculate beyond what the Bible says.

But what we can do is share the gospel with anyone and everyone, trusting God with the results.

Charles Spurgeon says this.

If the Lord had put a yellow stripe down the backs of the elect, I'd go up and down the street lifting up shirt tails, finding out who had the yellow stripe, and then I'd give them the gospel. But God didn't do it that way. He told me to preach the gospel to every creature that 'whosoever will may come’.

But how can we tell if someone has truly responded to the gospel?

In places like Japan, where there’s a social cost to being a Christian, it's easy to water down the definition of faith.

Let’s consider that in myth #3: belief can be kept private (42-43).

The other day I made the unwise decision of reading comments on social media.

There was a discussion about barriers to Christianity in Japan.

One of the barriers is family pressure to participate in Buddhist and Shinto rituals.

One Western missionary, who’s worked in Japan for decades, wrote this.

There is no problem fulfilling Buddhist family obligations as a Christian. This kind of concern for performative Christianity is what makes the Japanese view Christians as borderline wacko…If you aren't a Buddhist believer, no amount of Buddhist action will make you into one.

Essentially, he says, faith is a private matter of the heart.

“I know it looks like I’m bowing to idols and false gods, but God knows my heart, so it's ok!”

For this missionary, private faith that has no effect on external actions is [quote] “no problem”…

…but is it a problem for Jesus?

John makes it clear…Jesus has no private disciples.

42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.

This is not a positive assessment.

This so-called private “belief” is mere intellectual assent, not biblical faith.

Many were willing to affirm what Jesus said was true, but few were willing to confess it.

Why?

43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

In the unbelieving heart, man is big and God is small.

In their pursuit of harmony with man… they forgot about harmony with God.

But real faith prioritizes pleasing God over pleasing man, no matter the cost.

That missionary we referenced makes a strange disconnect between internal belief and external action.

But the Bible never does this.

Jesus says…

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth… speaks…

You will recognize them by their… fruits.

Your words and actions are a window into your heart.

Let’s say someone robs a 7/11 at gunpoint.

They get arrested.

…their defense?

“No, no,... you don’t understand…in my heart, I’m a law abiding citizen. I’m not a criminal, so no amount of criminal action can make me one.”

Make no mistake… sinful external actions are sin, whatever your heart's intention may be.

Bowing to idols makes you… an idolater.

But confessing Jesus… shows you to be a true disciple.

Romans 10:9 says: “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Saying the words… “Jesus is Lord” out loud isn’t a magical spell that automatically saves the one who says it.

Rather, the person who’s willing to publicly confess faith in Jesus as their Lord should have assurance they’re saved.

Conversely, let's say a person claims faith in Jesus, but is utterly unwilling to…

…publicly identity as a Christian…

…undergo baptism…

…or fellowship with a visible church.

Such a person should have little confidence they’re saved.

In our theology of belief, we considered some dangerous myths about belief.

The myth of delay, the myth of evidence, and the myth of privacy.

But as we close, let's consider perhaps the most dangerous one of all.

Myth #4: Un-belief can never be changed (44-50).

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

To believe in Jesus is to believe in God.

To see Jesus is to see God.

If the glory of God is like a blinding solar eclipse…Jesus Christ is a pair of solar eclipse glasses.

Jesus is the way to know God.

But what’s the way to know Jesus?

The words of Jesus.

47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

In verses 47-50, Jesus refers to words and speaking eleven times.

Because everything turns on your response to the words of Jesus.

But here’s the good news.

The words of Jesus themselves… lead us to faith in Jesus’ words.

Jesus says: 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

These are the words that will save you or condemn you on the last day

These are the words that have the power to turn unbelief into belief.

So what will you do with these words?
