クリスチャンとは何でしょうか | What is a Christian? ヨハネの福音書13章 John 13

それは２００８年のことです。
私は14歳で、幾つかの高校に出願していました。
そのうち2校には、シャドーイング・プログラムがありました。
もし、『この学校の生徒ってどんな生活をしてるんだろう？』と気になったら、
そのプログラムに参加すれば、 生徒に一日密着して過ごすことができます。
私たちはヨハネの福音書の後半（13〜17章）に入りました。
イエス様はイスラエルに拒まれ、公（おおやけ）の場での宣教は終わりを迎えます。
そこでイエス様は、 弟子たちに教えを向けます。
しかし、ヨハネの後半はクリスチャンのためだけのものではありません。
ヨハネの13〜17章は、まるでシャドーイング・プログラムのようです。
それは、キリストの学校の生徒として生きるとはどういうことかを示しています。
ヨハネはこの福音書を記しました。 「・・イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなたがたが信じるためであり、また信じて、イエスの名によっていのちを得るためである。」
ヨハネは、こう考えさせることで私たちを導きます 。
イエスに従う人生とはどんなものだろう？
今日はヨハネ13章を見ながら、一つの問いに答えたいと思います。
クリスチャンとは何でしょうか？
その答えとして、ヨハネ13章からクリスチャンの特徴を６つ見ていきます 。
第一に、 クリスチャンとは…イエス様に愛されている人のことです。
さて、過越の祭りの前のこと、イエスは、この世を去って父のみもとに行く、ご自分の時が来たことを知っておられた。そして、世にいるご自分の者たちを愛してきたイエスは、彼らを最後まで愛された。
イエス様は世にいるご自分の者たちを愛された。
「ご自分の者」とは誰のことでしょうか？
ヨハネ17章6節で、イエス様はこう言われました。
あなたが世から選び出して与えてくださった人たちに、わたしはあなたの御名を現しました。彼らはあなたのものでしたが、あなたはわたしに委ねてくださいました。
あなたがクリスチャンであるなら、それは世界の始まる前から天の父があなたをイエスに与えてくださったからです。
イエス様はあなたに神の御名を現すことで、神がどのようなお方か示されました。
イエス様は十字架にかかり死に至るまで、あなたを愛し抜かれました。
アメイジング・グレイスの作者であるジョン・ニュートンは、クリスチャンになる前は奴隷商人でした。
そんな罪深い過去があっても、神が自分を愛してくださることに彼は驚きました。
彼はこう言いました「主は、私が生まれる前から私を愛しておられたに違いない。
でなければ、後の私に、愛するに値するものは何一つ見いだされなかったであろう。
イエス様の愛に驚かされるには、イエス様の偉大さを理解する必要があります。
お持ちの方、手を挙げてください。
スティーブ・ジョブズが最も成功した一人であることは間違いありません。
しかし……彼を知る人は皆、その成功が彼を傲慢にしたと言いました。
社員が提案した新しいアイデアが気に入らないと、話の途中で遮って「そんなのくだらない 」と言いました。
彼は障害者用の駐車スペースに故意に車を停めており、それはまるで「私は特別で偉大な人間だ。だから他人に配慮する必要はない」と言っているかのようでした。
世の偉人たちは 、一般的に、他者に仕えることでは知られていません。
それでは、イエス様も同じでしょうか？
イエスは、父が万物（ばんぶつ）をご自分の手に委ねてくだたっさこと、またご自分が神から出て、神に帰ろうとしていることを知っておられた。
なんという経歴でしょう！
イエス様は神から来られたお方で、 かねてから永遠に存在する神です。
イエス様は神のもとへ帰られ、父なる神の右の座において高く上げられます。
すべてがイエス様の御手の中にある。これ以上の偉大さを得ることができるでしょうか！
こういう人こそ、他人の話を遮ったり、障害者用駐車スペースに車を停めたりしそうなタイプですよね。
この後、何が起こるでしょうか。
イエスは夕食の席から立ち上がって、上着を脱ぎ、手ぬぐいを取って腰にまとわれた。それから、たらいに水を入れて、弟子たちの足を洗い、腰にまとっていた手ぬぐいでふき始められた。
当時の人々の足は、清潔ではありませんでした。
街の通りは人や動物の排泄物であふれていて、履いていた靴はつま先の覆われていないものでした。
弟子たちの足を洗うことは、単なる心温まる奉仕というだけでなく、
それはイエス様の人生と使命全体を表す象徴です。
永遠の神の子であるイエス様は、罪人を救うためにしもべとなられました。
その点について、 次のポイントでもみていきます。
二つ目の特徴は、クリスチャンは罪からきよめられているということです。
6 こうして、イエスがシモン・ペテロのところに来られると、ペテロはイエスに言った。「主よ、あなたが私の足を洗ってくださるのですか。」7イエスは彼に答えられた。「わたしがしていることは、今はわからなくても、後で分かるようになります。」8ペテロはイエスに言った。「決して私の足を洗わないでください。」イエスは答えられた。「わたしがあなたを洗わなければ、あなたはわたしと関係ないことになります。」9シモン・ペテロは言った。「主よ、足だけでなく、手も頭も洗ってください。」10 イエスは彼に言われた。「水浴した者は、足以外は洗う必要がありません。全身がきよいのです。あなたがたはきよいのですが、皆がきよいわけではありません。」
繰り返しますが、これは罪の赦しを象徴するものです。
クリスチャンは、１０節にあるように、水浴によって完全に清められています。
イエス様を信じたその瞬間、あなたのすべての罪——過去・現在・未来の罪——が赦されるのです。
ですからあなたは足以外は洗う必要はありません。
イエス様は私たちを、罪の結果である罰から完全に救い出してくださいましたが、日々、私たちは罪の影響力から解放され続ける必要があります。
神の愛と赦しは、クリスチャンの人生全体の基盤となっています。
ヨハネの手紙第一 4章19節にこう書かれています。 「私たちは愛しています。〈イエスさま〉がまず私たちを愛してくださったからです」。
ヨハネの手紙第一 1章9節「もし私たちが自分の罪を告白するなら、〈神〉は真実で正しい方ですから、その罪を赦し、私たちをすべての不義からきよめてくださいます。
他の宗教では、もしあなたが従うなら、神に愛され、赦されるだろう』という考えから始まります。
キリスト教はこう考えます。『あなたはキリストによってすでに神に愛され、赦されている。それゆえ従うのです』と。
キリスト教の本質は、自分の行いではなく、 キリストが何をして下さったかが中心にあります。
しかし、従順さはクリスチャンにとっても重要なものです。そのことを第三の特徴で見ていきます。
クリスチャンは従順さによって特徴づけられます
12 イエスは彼らの足を洗うと、上着を着て再び席に着き、彼らに言われた。「わたしがあなたがたに何をしたのか分かりますか。13あなたがたはわたしを「先生」とか「主」とか呼んでいます。そう言うのは正しいことです。そのとおりなのですから。14主であり、師であるこのわたしが、あなたがたの足を洗ったのであれば、あなたがたもまた、互いに足を洗い合わなければなりません。15わたしがあなたがたにしたとおりに、あなたがたもするようにと、あなたがたに模範を示したのです。
私たちの師であり主であるイエス様は、「私たち」が見習うべき模範を示されました。
大学生の時、私はレストランでウェイターとして働いていました 。
研修では、先輩が注文を取り、料理を運び、接客する様子を観察しました。
お手本を見る目的はなんだったのでしょうか。
それは、先輩ウェイターがしたことをそのまま行うことです。
イエス様から学ぶ目的は、イエス様のなさったことを実践することです。
だからこそイエス様はこう言われます 「これらのことが分かっているなら、そして、それを行うなら、あなたがたは幸いです。」
聖書を知る目的は、聖書に従うことです。
私たちはこれを、つい複雑にしすぎ、霊的に考えすぎます。
心の状態が整ったときに、私は行いたいです。
そのことについて、私はまだ聖書を学んでいるところです。
しかし多くの場合、心の変化は、神のことばを信じ、従った後に起こります。
私の友人は、信仰を持ち始めた頃、教会に献金することに 戸惑いを感じていました。
彼は、聖書は十分の一献金を教えていると確信するようになりました。
そこで、献金が聖書の明確な教えだと信じながらも従えない理由を説明するため、メンターに会いました。
大学生はあまりお金を持っていない、と自分の厳しい状況を友人は話しました。
メンターは深い共感をもって話を聞きました。
「それはきついね 、、その気持ち分かるよ…」。
10分ほど説明したあと、友人は話すのをやめました 。
するとメンターは『うん…でも十分の一 献金はしないとね』と言いました。
そしてこれが、彼の信仰の転機となりました。
問題はお金ではなく、キリストの主としての権威だったからです。
従順は律法主義ではありません。
従順は弟子として生きることです。
ルカの福音書6章46節でイエス様はこう言われます。
なぜあなたがたは、わたしを「主よ、主よ」と呼びながら、わたしの言うことを行わないのですか。
ですから皆さん、聖書の中の....
従うべき命令や、
信じるべき教えがあるのに、
言い訳をして従うことを先延ばしにしていないでしょうか？
聖書の教えを知っていながら行えていないなら 、悔い改め従いましょう。
従順を先延ばしにすることは、不従順だからです。

私たちはヨハネ13章から、クリスチャンとは何かを考えてきました。
しかしこの章全体には、クリスチャンではないものを示す影のような視点があります。
第四の特徴は、クリスチャンは神への近さによってではなく、恵みによって救われるということです。
10節でイエス様が言われたことを思い出してください
10 イエスは彼に言われた。「水浴した者は、足以外は洗う必要がありません。全身がきよいのです。あなたがたはきよいのですが、皆がきよいわけではありません。」11イエスはご自分を裏切る者を知っておられた。それで、「皆がきよいわけではない」と言われたのである。
イエス様を裏切るのは、弟子の一人ユダです。
ユダは三年間、イエス様とほかの弟子たちのそばで、説教を聞き、奇跡を見ました。
しかし、イエス様の近くにいることと、イエス様を知ることは別です。
人は、クリスチャンの多い国の出身、または、クリスチャンの親を持つ人を同じクリスチャンだと考えがちです。
しかし、聖書、クリスチャン、福音説教に囲まれているだけでは救われず、真の救いはイエス様への信仰だけです。
しかし怖ろしいのは、イエス様を知らなくても、教会に馴染むことはできてしまうことです。
21 イエスは、これらのことを話されたとき、心が騒いだ。そして証しされた。「まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。あなたがたのうちの一人が、わたしを裏切ります。」22 弟子たちは、だれのことを言われたのか分からず当惑し、互いに顔を見合わせていた。
外見からはユダが偽りの信者だとは誰にも分かりませんでした。
彼がイエス様を裏切るとは誰も思わず、ごく普通のクリスチャンのように見えました。
もしユダが今日、私たちの教会に現れたら…
おそらく私たちは彼に洗礼を授け、教会の一員として迎えるでしょう 。
彼を牧師として任命するかもしれません。
何しろ、彼を使徒に任命したのはイエス様なのです。
私たちは、確かな信仰告白がある人に洗礼を授け、教会員として受け入れ、主の晩餐にあずかることを認めます。
あなたがクリスチャンだと告白し、福音を説明でき、悔い改めていない重大な罪がないければ、私たちはその言葉を信じます。
私たちは100％確実には知ることはできませんが 、…主はご自分の者を知っておられます。
しかし、クリスチャンに外的なしるしがないわけではありません。むしろその逆です。
30節でユダは出て行き、イエス様を裏切ります。
偽善が取り除かれた後、イエス様は真の弟子たちに、クリスチャンの明確な特徴を教えられます。
第五の特徴は、クリスチャンのしるしは愛だということです。
わたしはあなたがたに新しい戒めを与えます。互いに愛し合いなさい。わたしがあなたがたを愛したように、あなたがたも互いに愛し合いなさい。35互いの間に愛があるなら、それによって、あなたがたがわたしの弟子であることを、すべての人が認めるようになります。
なぜこれが新しい戒めなのでしょうか？
旧約聖書で隣人を愛することは教えられており、それ自体が新しいわけではありません。
新しい点は、愛の基準です。
イエス様の弟子であるクリスチャンは、イエス様が私たちを愛されたように、互いに愛し合うようにとされています。
イエス様は私たちをどれほど愛してくださったのでしょうか？
天から降りて十字架で死なれるほどの愛、 それが私たちが持つべき愛なのです。
なんと高い基準でしょうか！
しかし、このように始めることができます。
皆さん、私の長女が、赤ちゃんの人形を持ち歩いているのを見たことがあるかもしれません。
1歳になったとたん、彼女は赤ちゃん人形のお世話をし始めました。
寝かしつけ、ミルクを飲ませ、「大好きだよ」と言ったり。
なぜでしょう？
それは、 私と妻がそのように彼女を育ててきたからです。
同様に、イエス様のあなたへの愛を思うほど、あなたも他の人を愛するようになるでしょう。

気が合う人、一緒にいて楽しい人を愛するのは難しいことではありません。
しかし、それは特別なものではなく、犬だって、自分を養ってくれる人には懐きます。
クリスチャンの愛が本物かどうか、ここで試されます。
あなたは自分に何も返してくれない人を愛しますか？
関わるのが大変な人を愛しますか？
その愛に犠牲が伴うときも、愛しますか？
聖書が教える愛は、「温かい気持ち」だけではなく、行動です。
ヨハネ3章16節をご存じの方、第一ヨハネ3章16節は知っていますか？
16 キリストは私たちのために、ご自分のいのちを捨ててくださいました。それによって私たちに愛が分かったのです。ですから、私たちも兄弟のために、いのちを捨てるべきです。17この世の財を持ちながら、自分の兄弟が困っているのを見ても、その人に対してあわれみの心を閉ざすような者に、どうして神の愛がとどまっているでしょうか。
イエス様は、私たちが罪の中滅びに向かっているのをご覧になったとき、
天でただ座ったまま、
「心配しないで。私はあなたを愛している」 と言われただけではありません。
イエスは私たちのために行動し、私たちの重荷をご自分のものとされました。
私が知る、あるクリスチャンの方は生まれつき珍しい血液の病気を抱えていました。
8歳のとき、医師たちは「助かるために、1年以上、 毎週輸血を続けなければならない」と告げました。
しかし、必要な血液の量も多く、その状態を長期間維持することは不可能に思われ 、医師たちは大変心配しました。
その子の家族が通っていた小さな教会には、彼と同じ珍しい血液型の人が数人いました。
話を聞いたその人たちは頼まれるまでもなく、1年間にわたって毎週献血〈けんけつ〉することを申し出、彼の命を救ったのです。
一体誰がそんなことをするでしょうか。
それは、 イエス様がご自身の血を流し、私たちの救いのため命をささげてくださったと知り、その大きな犠牲を伴う愛によって心を変えられた人たちです。
35 互いの間に愛があるなら、それによって、あなたがたがわたしの弟子であることを、すべての人が認めるようになります。」
これって聞いていると「いいな！」と思うんですが 、実践するのは難しいです
私自身、ほかのクリスチャンを愛することに、自分の至らなさを感じます
あなたもそう感じているなら、ここで朗報があります
クリスチャンは弱さがあるが、なお従おうとする人です。
36 シモン・ペテロがイエスに言った。「主よ、どこにおいでになるのですか。」イエスは答えられた。「わたしが行くところに、あなたは今ついて来ることができません。しかし後にはついて来ます。」37ペテロはイエスに言った。「主よ、なぜ今ついて行けないのですか。あなたのためなら、いのちも捨てます。」38 イエスは答えられた。「わたしのためにいのちも捨てるのですか。まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。鶏が鳴くまでに、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言います。」
私はペテロが大好きです。
神様は、彼の歩みを通して私たちを励まそうとしてくださったのだと思います。
何度もつまずいたペテロを、イエス様は弟子として用い、聖書を書く働きをも任せられたのです。
忘れないでください。ペテロもユダも、イエス様を裏切ったのです。
二人とも、自分のしたことを悲しみました。
しかし、ここに大きな違いがあります。とても重要なことです。
悔い改め です。
ペテロは悔い改めましたが、ユダはそうしませんでした。
クリスチャンの歩みで大切なのは、完璧さではなく、向かう方向です。
箴言 24:16 正しい人は七度倒れても、また起き上がり、悪しき者はわざわいでつまずくからだ。
信仰者が義とされるのは、一度も倒れないからではなく、再び立ち上がるからです。
まだクリスチャンではない皆さん 、
こんなふうに思っているかもしれません。「イエス様に従いたい気持ちはある。けど自分は完璧じゃない。たくさん失敗するだろうし、罪も犯してしまうだろう」。
クリスチャンの皆さん、神様に従うための一歩を踏み出したいと思いつつ、その歩みがつまずきながらの不完全なものになると感じているかもしれません。
私の1歳の娘はいま、歩くことを学んでいます。
娘が5秒の間立って、数歩歩いて転んだとき、私がどんな気持ちになるでしょう？
がっかりするでしょうか？
全く逆で、私は思わず席から飛び上がって拍手し、すごいね！！と言います。
同じように、イエス様はあなたを見て、「そんなの不完全だ。やるだけ無駄だ」などとは思われません。
あなたがイエス様に従って一歩を踏み出すたびに、イエス様は応援しておられます。

2008年にさかのぼります。
私が見学した2つの学校のうち、
一つはすべての出願を受け入れる学校で、一つは選抜制の学校でした。
残念ながら、より名門とされる学校には不合格でした。
それでも振り返ってみると後悔はなく、とても良い経験をし、多くを学ぶことができました。
では、クリスチャンとは何でしょうか。
それは、自分の功績によってではなく、純粋な恵みによってキリストの学校に迎え入れられた者です。
そして今、イエス様はあなたを教え導き、つまずきながら歩むその一歩一歩を励ましておられます。

The year is 2008.
I’m 14 years old and applying for different high schools.
Two of the schools had a shadowing program.
If you were wondering “what’s life like as a student of this school?”
…you could sign up for the shadowing program and follow a student around for the day.
We’ve officially crossed into part two of John’s Gospel, chapters 13-17.
Jesus has been rejected by Israel, and his public ministry is over.
So, Jesus turns to teaching his disciples.
But the 2nd half of John isn’t just for Christians…
John 13-17 is like a shadowing program.
It shows you what life is like as a student in the school of Christ.
John wrote his gospel… so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
And part of how John persuades is by helping us envision…
“If I were to follow Jesus, what would my life be like?”
So today, looking at John 13, I wanna answer one question.
What is a Christian?
To answer that question, let’s consider six characteristics of a Christian from John 13.
First, a Christian is… loved by Jesus (v1-5).
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
Jesus loved his own who were in the world.
Who are Jesus’ own?
Jesus says this in John 17:6…
I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me…
If you’re a Christian, it's because you were given to Jesus by the Father before the world began.
Jesus manifested God’s name to you, showing you what God is like.
And Jesus loved you to the end, to the cross and through death.
John Newton, author of “Amazing Grace”, was a slave trader before he became a Christian.
With such a sinful past, he was amazed that God would love him.
He said: “The Lord must have loved me before I was born, or else he would have not seen anything in me to love afterwards”
To be amazed by the love of Jesus, you have to understand the greatness of Jesus.
Raise your hand if you have an iPhone.
There’s proof that Steve Jobs is one of the most successful people ever.
And yet…anyone that knew him said the success made him arrogant.
If an employee failed to impress him with a new idea, he’d cut them off mid-sentence and say… “that’s garbage.”
He’d park in the handicap spot, on purpose, as if to say “because I am great…better… special…I don’t have to put others before myself.”
The great people of the world aren’t generally known for serving others.
So… is this how Jesus is?
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God
What a resume!
Jesus came from God, he’s the eternally pre-existent Son of God.
Jesus is going back to God, he’ll soon be exalted at the Father’s right hand.
All things are in Jesus’ hands… like how do you get any greater?!
This is the kind of guy you’d expect to interrupt others and park in the handicap spot.
So…what happens next?
4 [Jesus] rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
People’s feet in Jesus’ day were not clean…
The streets were filled with human and animal waste, and the shoes were NOT closed-toed.
Washing the disciples feet is not just a touching act of service.
It's symbolic of Jesus' entire life and mission.
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, became a servant to save sinners.
But more on that in the next point!
Second characteristic…a Christian is cleansed from sin (v6-11).
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”
Again, this is symbolic of being forgiven of sin.
Christians are, v10… bathed… completely clean.
At the moment you believe in Jesus, you’re forgiven of all your sins… past, present, and future.
So you don’t need to wash…except your feet.
Jesus delivered us from the penalty for sin once and for all, but we need to be delivered from the power of sin every day.
God’s love and forgiveness are the foundation of the entire Christian life.
1 John 4:19 says we love because [Jesus] first loved us.
1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Other religions begin with… “if you obey… you’ll be loved and forgiven by God.”
Christianity begins with… “in Christ you are already loved and forgiven, therefore…obey.”
Christianity is most fundamentally about what Christ has done, not what you must do.
But rightly understood, obedience is still an essential part of being a Christian… as we’ll see in the third characteristic.
A Christian is marked by obedience (v12-17).
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
Jesus, our teacher and Lord, has given an example that [we] also should do just as he has done for us.
In college, I worked as a server at a restaurant.
The training was observing a server take orders, bring food, and interact with the customers.
What was the goal of watching the example?
Doing exactly what the server did.
The goal of learning from Jesus is doing what Jesus did.
Which is why Jesus says…
17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
The goal of Bible knowledge is Bible obedience.
Too often, we over-complicate and over-spiritualize this.
“I want to do it when my heart is in the right place.”
“I’m still processing what the Bible teaches about that.”
But often, heart change happens only after we take God at his Word, and obey.
A good friend of mine struggled with the idea of giving to his local church as a young Christian.
He became convinced the Bible said he needed to tithe, or give 10% for offering.
So he met with his mentor to explain why he wasn’t obeying what he believed Scripture clearly taught.
He talked about his hard circumstances…college students don’t have a lot of money.
The mentor listened very empathetically…
“yeah, that’s hard… wow, for sure… oh, I know how you feel…”
After 10 minutes of explaining, my friend stopped talking.
And the mentor just said “yeah… but you gotta tithe.”
And this was a turning point for him in his faith…
…because the problem wasn’t money, the problem was the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Obedience is not legalism.
Obedience is discipleship.
Jesus says in Luke 6:46…
46 Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
So friends, is there any thing in the Bible that is…
…a command to obey?
…a teaching to believe?
But you’re making excuses and delaying obedience?
If you know what the Bible says and fail to do it…repent, and obey.
Because delayed obedience… is disobedience.

We’ve been considering what a Christian is from John 13.
But all throughout this chapter, there’s been a dark thread…what a Christian isn’t.
Fourth characteristic…a Christian is saved by grace, not proximity (v18-30).
Recall what Jesus said in v10.
10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
The one who was to betray Jesus is Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples.
Judas was around Jesus and his disciples for three years…hearing sermons, seeing miracles.
But being around Jesus doesn’t mean you know Jesus.
People might assume someone’s Christian because they’re from a majority Christian country or have Christian parents…
But being around Bibles, Christians, and gospel preaching cannot save you, only faith in Jesus will.
Because here’s what's scary… you could learn to fit in at church without really knowing Jesus.
21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.
Nobody could tell from the outside that Judas was a false believer!
No one would have guessed he would betray Jesus… he just seemed like a normal Christian guy.
If Judas showed up at our church today…
We’d probably baptize him and welcome him as a member…
We might even appoint him as a pastor…
I mean after all, Jesus made him an apostle!
We baptize and admit people to church membership and the Lord’s Supper upon a credible profession of faith.
If you’re saying you’re a Christian, can articulate the gospel, and there’s no major unrepentant sin…we’ll take you at your word.
We can’t know with 100% certainty, but… the Lord knows those who are his.
But that’s not to say there’s no external markers of a Christian… just the opposite.
In v30, Judas leaves and goes out to betray Jesus.
With the hypocrisy purged, Jesus teaches his true disciples the unmistakable mark of a Christian.
Characteristic five…a Christian is known for love (v31-35).
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
Why is this commandment new?
The Old Testament taught love for neighbor, that’s not what’s new.
What’s new is the standard of love…
Jesus' disciples… Christians… are to love one another… just as Jesus has loved us.
How much has Jesus loved us?
… enough to come down from heaven and die on a cross… that’s how much we are to love!
What a high standard…!
…but here’s how you can start to do it.
You might have seen my oldest daughter carrying around this little baby doll.
As soon as she turned one, she started taking care of the baby doll…
Putting it to bed, feeding it milk, saying “I love you.”
Why?
Because that’s the way she’s been cared for by my wife and I.
Likewise… the more you dwell on Jesus' love for you, the more you'll love others.

It's easy to love someone because they’re fun to be around and easy to talk to.
But there’s nothing supernatural about that…even a dog loves the person who feeds it!
The real test of Christian love is…
Do you love Christians who can do nothing for you?
…who are difficult to deal with?
…when it costs something to do so?
Biblical love is not just a warm feeling… it's an action!
You may know John 3:16… but do you know FIRST John 3:16?
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
When Jesus saw us dying in our sin, he didn’t sit back in heaven and say “don’t worry, I have feelings of love for you.”
No… Jesus got involved, he made our burdens his own.
I know a Christian who was born with a rare blood disease.
At eight years old, the doctors said to survive he would need weekly blood transfusions for more than a year.
But the doctors were really concerned, the amount of blood needed and the duration of time seemed impossible.
His family were members of a small church, where a small handful of people had his rare blood type.
But as soon as they found out about the need, without being asked they all volunteered to give blood every week for a whole year…saving his life.
Who does something like that?
People whose hearts have been changed by the costly love of Jesus, who opened up his own veins… shed his blood for our salvation.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
This is easy to get excited about in theory, in practice… hard to do.
I fall so short at loving other Christians!
If you feel the same way…I have some good news for you.
A Christian is…weak but willing (v36-38).
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
Guys, I love Peter.
I think God intended for his story to encourage us.
Like if Jesus let this guy who keeps messing up not only be a disciple, but write books of the Bible… he’ll let me be his follower too!
Remember…Peter and Judas both betrayed Jesus!
Both were sorrowful about their choice.
But here’s where they’re different…and this is so important.
…repentance!
Peter repented… whereas Judas didn’t.
You see, the Christian life is not about perfection, but direction.
Proverbs 24:16 says… for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
A believer is not righteous because they never fall but because they get back up when they do.
Non-Christian friends…
Maybe you’re thinking I wanna follow Jesus, but I know I’m not perfect, I know I’m going to make a lot of mistakes and sin…
Christians…maybe you want to take an uncertain step of obedience, but you know it will be imperfect, stumbling.
My one year old daughter is learning to walk.
When she stands up for five seconds… or even takes a couple steps before falling… how do you think I feel?
Disappointed?
Far from it, I jumped out of my seat and clapped… “wow baby!!!!!”
In the same way, Jesus isn’t looking at you and thinking… “Wow, that’s imperfect, don’t even bother!”
No…whenever you take a step to follow Jesus…he is cheering you on!

Flash back to 2008.
Of the two schools I shadowed at…
one accepted all applications…the other was selective admission.
Unfortunately, I got rejected by the more prestigious school.
Looking back I have no regrets, I had a great experience, and learned so much!
So what is a Christian?
Someone who got into the school of Christ not because they earned it, but because of pure grace.
And now Jesus is teaching you, cheering you on, every stumbling step of the way.
