福音は唯一の道 | The Only Way Is Good News ヨハネの福音書14章1～14 John 14:1-14

あなたにとって、聖書の中で一番信じ難いものはなんですか？
私にとっては、「キリストの排他性」です。
それは、イエス様が救いへの唯一の方法であることです。
つまり、イエス様を信じていなければ、天国には行きません、地獄に行きます。
私は宗教的な家庭には育ちませんでした。
１９歳のころ、私は無神論者でした。
なので、クリスチャンの友達たちが私に、イエス様が唯一の道である事を教えた時、私びっくりしました。
そして怒って、その会話から離れました。
そのあと、私の友達がメッセージを送ってきました。
これは当時、2013年4月、私が実際に送ったフェースブックの返信です。
よくわからないけど、なんだか気分を害した/否定や批判された感じ/あなたが言ってる事をあんまり同意出来ない。
だから、あなたのような考えを持つ人がいると、私はそれを個人的に受け止めてしまうんだ。個人的に、私が宗教的な人たちへの問題は（もちろんみんなではないけど）他の宗教や信仰を持つ人に対する視点だな。私にとって a) キリスト教が主要な宗教ではない国に生まれたという理由だけで、あるいは b) 徳のある人間でありながら、単に神を信じることができない、あるいは信じようとしないという理由だけで、人々を不当に裁くような神など、私には到底理解できない。」
かつての自分はキリストの排他性に関して、大きな問題だと感じました。
あなたにとっても、そうかもしれません。
その13年後、私はそれを喜ばしいことと、分かるようになりました。
そして今日、あなたにも同じようになって欲しいと思います。
今日のメインポイント。
イエスは唯一の道であり、それは良い知らせです。
なので、イエス様の排他性が良い知らせである３つの理由を考えて行きましょう。
イエス様は一節からこう言います:1「あなたがたは心を騒がせてはなりません。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。2わたしの父の家には住む所がたくさんあります。そうでなかったら、あなたがたのために場所を用意しに行く、と言ったでしょうか。3わたしが行って、あなたがたに場所を用意したら、また来て、あなたがたをわたしのもとに迎えます。わたしがいるところに、あなたがたもいるようにするためです。
その父の家は天国の隠喩です。
イエス様は天国で、イエス様の人々のために場所を用意しに行くと言っています。
そしてイエス様がまた来て天国へ迎えますと書かれています。
なぜなら、救いに関しては…イエス様がすべてをあなたのためにしてくださるからです。
イエス様は頼まれず、全てを整えてくださるのです。
今年の初頭に、ミーティングの為に東京に行きました。
私の同僚が泊まるホテルを予約してくれました。
ホテルについて、そのレセプションに行って彼の名前を記入したら、何もでてこなかった。
福岡から来たから、泊まる場所がないと心配し始めた。
ホテルの人が手伝いに来ました。
「予約の名前はなんですか？」
「タナー サルバ」
そして、ほっとしたことに、部屋が用意されていました。
あなたが人生と言う長き難しい旅を終えて、天国の扉にたどり着いた時。。誰が予約を入れてくれたと、信頼できますか？
誰の名前を呼んで、父の家に入るのでしょうか？
「イエス キリスト」
信じれば、イエスキリストが父の家に、あなたと住む所を用意します。
父の御前で、イエス様がおられる所に…居場所があります…あなたの本当の居場所があるのです。
そして、住む所がたくさんあります！
素敵な話です…けどいったいどうやってたどり着くのでしょうか？
4 わたしがどこに行くのか、その道をあなたがたは知っています。」5 トマスはイエスに言った。「主よ、どこへ行かれるのか、私たちには分かりません。どうしたら、その道を知ることができるでしょうか。」6 イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしが道であり、真理であり、いのちなのです。わたしを通してでなければ、だれも父のみもとに行くことはできません。
あるクリスチャンは６節にこう考察しました。
道がなければ、行くことが出来ない。真理がなければ、知ることが出来ない。命がなければ、生きることが出来ない。
父の臨在は天国です。
そしてイエス様は、父と天国の唯一の道はイエス様ご自身と言いました。
キリスト教は他の宗教と、根本的に異なります。
ブッダは、八正道を実践すれば涅槃に到達できると説いている。
ムハンマドは、イスラム教の五行を実践すれば、天国に行けると言います。
主要な宗教指導者たちは皆、「これが正しい道だ」と言います。
ですが、イエス様が「わたし…が道だり」と言います。
神様への道は、規則のリストではありません。
神様への道は、複雑な式ではありません。
神様への道は、人であって、その方の名前は…イエスキリストです。
こちらに、どちらも事実である２つの記述があります。
キリスト教は世界で最も排他的な宗教です。
キリスト教は世界で最も包括的な宗教です。
排他的は…６節：イエス様「を通してでなければ、だれも父のみもとに行くことはできません。」
けど同時に包括的…２節：「わたしの父の家には住む所がたくさんあります。」
父の家には、誰にでも居場所があります。
道徳的に善良である必要はない。
「正しい」教会に入信する必要はありません
ただ、イエス・キリストとの個人的な関係を持てばいいのです。
ある人たちはこう反論するかもしれません。「それは不公平、イエスの事を聞いたことがない人たちはどうすればいいの？」
正直、クリスチャンの中でもキリストの排他性に関して違和感を感じる方は多い。
1960年代、ローマカトリック教はこの問題に関しての立場を改めました。
ローマカトリック教会のカテキズムにはこう書かれています。
キリストの福音も、その教会も、自分の責任によらずして知らない人々であっても、誠実な心をもって神を求め、恵みの働きによって、良心の命じるところを通して知られる神のみ旨を行おうと努める人々もまた、永遠の救いを得ることができる。
この発言は20世紀までごく少数のクリスチャンが信じていた、包括主義の一例です。（新しい考え方です）
包括主義は表に良い考えだと思われますが、3つの大問題があります。
1つめは、聖書に反する問題。（聖書的問題）
使徒の働き４章１２節にはイエス様はこう言います：「この方以外には、だれによっても救いはありません。天の下でこの御名のほかに、私たちが救われるべき名は人間に与えられていないからです。」
ローマ人への手紙２章１２節には：「律法なしに罪を犯した者はみな、律法なしに滅び、」ますと書かれています。
それはみな神様の律法を知らず、聖書を読んだこともない者、は罪のせいで永遠に滅びる意味なのです。
エペソ人への手紙２章１２節には、古代ギリシャで、キリストを知る前に他の神々を崇拝していたクリスチャン達にこう書かれています。
「そのころは、キリストから遠く離れ、イスラエルの民から除外され、約束の契約については他国人で、この世にあって望みもなく、神もない者たちでした。」
この方々は、天国に行きそうな人たちだと思いますでしょうか？
包括主義が聖書的に成り立つためには、先ほどの聖書箇所のありそうもない、推測的な解釈に頼らなければなりません。
2つめは、論理に反する問題。（論理的問題）
イエス様の事を知らずに救われることが可能であれば、一番したらダメなことは何でしょうか？
それはイエス様のことを伝える事になります。
ですがパウロがローマ人への手紙１５章２０節にこう言います：「…キリストの名がまだ語られていない場所に福音を宣べ伝えることを、私は切に求めているのです。」
イエス様が救いに重要でなければ、なぜパウロはわざわざイエスキリストの福音を宣べ伝えるのを求めるのでしょう？
3つ目は、心に反する問題です。（心的問題）
たとえ、、医者が末期がんの患者を診断したとしましょう。
そして患者さんが生存する希望を失ってしまったところで、
別の医者がある手術方法で命が助かると知りました。
その患者さんは「私の命を救う方法はたった一つだけしかない？」と気をとられると思いますでしょうか？
もちろん、しません！
神様は誰であるか、と自分自身が誰であるかを本当に知ってあれば、「たった一つの救いの道しかない？信じられない。」と思うことはしません。
いいえ、逆に、「信じられない！私には、救いの道があるの？」と思うでしょう。
神様が私たちを平等に、救いの道を与える義務があると人は暗黙に、想定してしまいます。
ですが、神様は我々反抗する罪びとに救う義務なんて全くありません。
神様が全人類を地獄に送ったとしても…神様は正しいのです。

チャールズ・スポルジョンはこう問いかけられました：「福音を聞いたことがない方々は救われるのでしょうか？」
彼はこう答えました：「より良い質問は、福音を知っていながら、それを知らない人々に伝えない私たちは救われることが出来るのか？ということだ。」
良い知らせがあります…救いの道があるのです！
それを自分自身で受け取って、
周りに伝えるのです。
しかし、イエスが唯一の道である理由は、何らかの機械的な公式によるものではありません。
次のポイントを見ると、もっと個人的なものなのだとわかります。
理由その２：神様を知る道がある。
7 あなたがたがわたしを知っているなら、わたしの父をも知ることになります。今から父を知るのです。いや、すでにあなたがたは父を見たのです。」8 ピリポはイエスに言った。「主よ、私たちに父を見せてください。そうすれば満足します。」9 イエスは彼に言われた。「ピリポ、こんなに長い間、あなたがたと一緒にいるのに、わたしを知らないのですか。わたしを見た人は、父を見たのです。どうしてあなたは、『私たちに父を見せてください』と言うのですか。
神様を知るということは抽象的だと思われるかもしれません。
しかし、イエスは理解可能な形で現れた神様です。
私は今、次女の保育園申し込みをしているところです。
何時間もかけて山ほどの書類を読んでいます。漢字の壁みたいなものです。
ある時点で、「もうこれは誰かと話さなきゃいけない。」と思い…区役所に行って、私が理解できるように説明してくれました。
神様は、私たちがアイディアより人を理解しやすいことをご存知です。
なので神様はこんなように：「私を知るため、抽象な哲学的原理をあげたりはしません…」
「完璧に私の姿を知る為、私はあなたに人を送ります。」と
イエスキリストの人格と矛盾する神の概念はすべて偶像であり、偽りの神です。
ヨハネの手紙第一２章２３節には、誰も子なるイエス様を知らずに、父なる神様を知ることが出来ない。
23 だれでも御子を否定する者は御父を持たず、御子を告白する者は御父も持っているのです。
これはなぜでしょうか？
それは、父と子は切り離せない存在だからです。
イエス様はこう言います：10 わたしが父のうちにいて、父がわたしのうちにおられることを、信じていないのですか。わたしがあなたがたに言うことばは、自分から話しているのではありません。わたしのうちにおられる父が、ご自分のわざを行っておられるのです。11 わたしが父のうちにいて、父がわたしのうちにおられると、わたしが言うのを信じなさい。信じられないのなら、わざのゆえに信じなさい。
父と子は互いに内在し合っています。
イエス様は他の箇所で：「わたしと父とは一つです」と言います。
クリスチャンは、父、子、と後、聖霊は一つの神様でありながら、三つの異なる位格であると信じています。
これは三位一体というものです。
父、子、と聖霊は野球チームの選手のような存在ではありません。
共通の目的で結びついた別々の存在ではありません。
父、子、聖霊は一つです…
子は父のうちにいて、父が子のうちにおられます。
父、子、聖霊はそれぞれ異なる位格です。
（２節に）イエス様は父のもとへ行き、父の権威を持って語り（１０節）、私たちを父のもとへ導く（６節）。
イエス様はこれをただの聖書の雑学と思っておりません。
イエス様はしかりと：11 わたしが父のうちにいて、父がわたしのうちにおられると、わたしが言うのを信じなさい。と言います。
これは命令形で言います。「信じなさい」と
イエス様は、三位一体教義を信じなければならない、と言っているのです。
三位一体の教義をよくアップルの利用規約のように扱ってしまいます。
「はいはいはい、同意」とサクッとスクロールしたりします。
ですが、洗礼を受けたばかりの人に「三位一体はなんですか？」と聞いたとして。
「主我を愛す、主は強ければ、われ弱くとも、恐れはあらじ」と答えたら…
問題ありません。
けど5年後、また聞いて返事が同じでしたら…問題があります。
私たちは聖書の知識で救われませんが…救われた人たちは聖書の知識に成長したいのです。
人は神様の知識を実利的なものとして扱ってしまいます。
「救われるために最低限に知っておくべきことはなんですか？」とか
初デートで誰かがこう聞いてきたらどう思いますか？
「さて、あなたと結婚するため、私が最低限知っておくべきことはなんですか？」
神様を同じように扱ってしまいませんか？
私に救いをください、私の祈りに答えてください…けどあなたをもっと知るように聞かないでください。

イエス様がいるからこそ、救いが有って、神様を知ることができるのです。
救われて、神様を深く知り始めれば、住む世界が変わって行くのです。
それで、最後のポイントに入りたいと思います。
理由その３：意義のある人生を送る道がある
12 まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。わたしを信じる者は、わたしが行うわざを行い、さらに大きなわざを行います。わたしが父のもとに行くからです。
イス様の弟子…クリスチャンたちが…イエス様よりさらに大きなわざを行う？？
聖書に書かれていなければ…異端と聞こえますよね。
イエス様の弟子はどうやってイエス様より大きなわざを行うのでしょうか？
方法が三つあります。
一つ目、地理的に
イエス様は公生涯はイスラエルに行いました、九州のやく半分くらいのサイズです。
ですが使徒の働きの始まりに、弟子達が福音を宣べ、広め始めました。
…そして今、はるばる日本まで福音がきたのです。
二つ目、民族的に
４つの福音書の中に記されているイエス様の３年間の働きにおいて、イエス様の弟子たちは全員ユダヤ人でした。
ですが、使徒の働きからは、あらゆる国々の民族が神様を知るようになりました。
そして今や、世界中のあらゆる国にクリスチャンがいます。
三つ目、数値的に
使徒の働き１章には、恐れおののく120人の弟子がいました。
けど２章には、他国の人々が聖霊に満たされ、１日で3000人ほどが教会がに加えられました。
そして現在、全人類の３分の１がイエスキリストを信じています。
クリスチャンたち、どれほど取るに足りなく感じているとしても…あなたはこの一員なのです。

神様は、私たちありふれた人々を通して大きなわざを行いたいのです…
けど一体どうやってするのでしょう？
イエス様はこう言います…13 またわたしは、あなたがたがわたしの名によって求めることは、何でもそれをしてあげます。父が子によって栄光をお受けになるためです。14 あなたがたが、わたしの名によって何かをわたしに求めるなら、わたしがそれをしてあげます。
お祈りの最後に「イエス様の御名によってお祈りします」って言うのは魔法の呪文的なものではありません。
それは、神様が祈りを何でも叶える義務があることを意味しないのです。
ジョン・パイパーはこう言います…「祈りは戦時のトランシーバーです、執事を呼ぶインターホンではありません。」
イエス様の御名によってお祈りするのは、イエス様の性質と一致するような祈りをすることです。
イエス様を通して父なる神様のご栄光を表すようと、神様のご意志と一致することを願いする祈り。
（例えば）
「神様、私をもっとイエス様のようにしてください。」
「神様、私をあなたともっと近く歩めるようにしてください。」
「神様、この罪から解放してください。」
神様が望むものを望めば…神様はその願いを聞いてくださると言うことです。
中国の大宣教師、ハドソン・テイラーはこう言います。
「以前私は、神様に助けを頼んでいました。そしてその後、私が神様の助けになれると頼むようになりました。けど最後には、神様の御心のままに、私のうちに働き、私を通して働きくださると頼むようになったのです。」
あなたが祈っていないものは…自分の力を頼って、変えようとしているものなのです。
あなたの人生の中で変わりそうもないものはなんですか?
子供の反抗？
破綻している結婚生活？
救われていない家族の一員？
クリスチャンでない方々…あなたの心が変わらないと思っているかもしれません。
「信じられない…」…と
聖なる神様のひとり子、死を克服し神の右の座に着いた、イエスキリストが、あなたを愛し、あなたに耳を傾きたいのです。
必要としているものを、たとえお値に出来ないと思っても、イエス様に頼んでみてください。
救いが出来そうもないと思っているとしても、イエス様に救ってくださいと頼んでみてください。
なぜなら、どうにも出来そうもない、その絶望的な場所でも…良い知らせがあるのです。
道があるのです。
意義のある人生を送る、唯一の道。
救いの、唯一の道。
神様を知る、唯一の道。
イエスキリストです。

What’s the most difficult thing for you to believe in the Bible?
For me… it's the exclusivity of Christ.
That is, Jesus is the only way to salvation.
Which means if you don’t believe in Jesus, you will not only not go to heaven, you will go to hell.
I didn’t grow up in a religious family.
At age 19, I was an atheist.
So when Christian friends told me Jesus is the only way, I was shocked!
I got angry and walked away from the conversation.
My friend messaged me to check in.
And here’s my actual response on Facebook Messenger from April 2013.
“idk I was kinda offended/felt judged/didn't really agree at all with what you were saying…
So like I take it personally when people have your sort of view. For me, I think the main problem I have with religious people (not all of them, of course) is their viewpoints about people of different faiths or people without religion. I simply can't fathom a God who judges people rather unfairly for either a) being born into a country where Christianity is not the main religion or b) being people who are virtuous but simply can't or don't believe in God.”
My past self viewed the exclusivity of Christ as a major problem.
And maybe you do, too.
13 years later, I’ve come to see it as good news.
Today, I want to persuade you to do the same.
Here’s today’s main point.
Jesus is the only way and that’s good news.
So let’s consider… three reasons the exclusivity of Christ is good news.
Reason #1: there is a way to salvation (1-6).
Jesus says, v1: 1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
The Father’s house is a metaphor for heaven.
Jesus says he goes to prepare a place in heaven for his people.
And one day, Jesus will come again to take them to heaven.
Because when it comes to salvation… Jesus does it all for you.
Jesus arranges everything without being asked.
Earlier this year, I flew to Tokyo for a meeting.
My co-worker booked a room for us to share.
But when I arrived at the hotel and I started typing in his name…nothing was coming up!
I came all the way from Fukuoka…and I was worried I wouldn’t have a place to sleep.
The hotel worker came to help.
“What’s the name for the reservation?”
“Tanner Salva.”
And to my relief, there was the room prepared for me.
When you make the long, difficult journey through this life and arrive at the gates of heaven…who are you trusting to make your reservation?
“By what name will you enter the Father’s house?”
“Jesus Christ.”
If you believe, Jesus Christ is preparing a room to share with you in the Father’s house.
In the presence of the Father, where Jesus is…there is an 居場所... a place you truly belong.
And many rooms are available!
Sounds wonderful… but how do you get there?
4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
One Christian made this reflection on v6.
Without the way, there is no going. Without the truth there is no knowing. Without the life there is no living.
The presence of the Father is heaven.
And Jesus says He’s the only way to the Father, the only way to heaven.
Because here’s where Christianity’s radically different from every world religion.
Buddha says follow the Eightfold Path… and you'll get nirvana.
Mohammed says do the Five Pillars of Islam… and you’ll get heaven.
All the major religious leaders say… “here is the way.”
Jesus says “I… am the way.”
The way to God is not… a list of rules.
The way to God is not… a complicated formula.
The way to God is a person and his name is… Jesus Christ.
Here are two equally true statements.
Christianity is the most exclusive religion in the world.
Christianity is the most inclusive religion in the world.
It's exclusive… v6: no one comes to the Father except through Jesus.
There’s room for everyone in the Father’s house.
You don’t have to be morally good.
You don’t have to join the “right” church.
You just have to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
But some object…“That’s not fair! What about those who’ve never heard of Jesus?”
Even some Christians are uncomfortable with the exclusivity of Christ.
In the 1960s, the Roman Catholic Church revised their position on this question.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this.
Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.
This statement is an example of inclusivism, a very new belief that very few Christians held until the 20th century.
Inclusivismsounds nice… but there are three major problems with it.
One, a biblical problem.
Acts 4:12 says about Jesus: “and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Romans 2:12 says: “For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law.”
That is all who don’t know God’s law, who have never read the Bible, will eternally perish because of their sin.
Ephesians 2:12 speaks to Christians in ancient Greece who used to worship many gods until they learned about Christ.
Remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
Does that sound like someone who’s going to heaven?
For inclusivism to work biblically, it has to rely on unlikely and speculative interpretations of these passages.
Two, a logical problem.
If you can be saved without hearing about Jesus… what's the worst thing I can do for you?
…tell you about Jesus!
And yet… Paul says in Romans 15:20… “I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named.”
Why would Paul do that if he thought people who’ve never heard of Jesus are fine?
Third, a heart problem.
Let’s say a doctor diagnoses someone with terminal cancer.
They’ve lost all hope for survival.
But then, a different doctor discovers a certain surgery will save their life.
Do you think that person would say “I can’t believe there’s just one way to save my life?”
Of course not!
If you truly understand who God is and who you are, you wouldn’t say “I can’t believe there's just one way to salvation.”
No you’ll say “I can’t believe there… is a way for me to be saved.”
Our unspoken assumption is that God is morally obligated to make salvation equally accessible to all.
But God has zero obligation to make salvation available to rebellious sinners.
If God sent 100% of the human race to hell…he would be completely just!

Charles Spurgeon was once asked: “will those who have not heard the gospel be saved?”
He responded: “A better question is whether we who have the gospel and fail to give it to those who have not, can be saved.”
We have good news… there is a way of salvation!
Receive it for yourself.
Then, tell it to others.
But Jesus is not the only way because of some mechanical formula.
No… it's much more personal than that, as we’ll see in the second point.
Reason #2: There is a way to knowing God (7-11).
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Knowing God can sound abstract.
But Jesus is God in comprehensible form.
We’re applying for our youngest daughter’s hoikuen right now.
We spent hours reading through a huge pile of documents, just a wall of kanji.
At a certain point I said “I just need to talk to a person”... and we went to the ward office and they explained everything so we could understand.
God knows we can understand a human being more than an idea.
So God says: “to help you understand who I am… I’m not gonna give you an abstract philosophical principle.”
“I’m going to send you a person who will perfectly show you what I am like.
Any idea of God that is inconsistent with the person of Jesus is an idol, a false god.
1 John 2:23 says no one can know God the Father without Jesus the Son.
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
Why?
Because the Father and the Son are inseparable from one another.
Jesus says: 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
The Father and the Son mutually indwell one another.
As Jesus says elsewhere… “I and the Father are one.”
Christians believe that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all God, yet distinct from one another.
This is called the Trinity.
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not like players on a baseball team.
They aren’t separate beings united by a common purpose.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one…
The Son is in the Father, and the Father is in the Son, v10.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct…
Jesus is going to the Father (v2), speaks on the Father’s authority (v10), and leads us to the Father (v6).
Jesus doesn’t see this as just fun Bible trivia.
No, Jesus says: 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.
That’s the imperative form, a command…
Jesus says you must believe in Trinitarian doctrine.
So often we treat the doctrine of the Trinity like its the Apple terms and conditions.
We scroll through quickly like, “yeah yeah yeah, I agree.”
Let’s say you ask someone who just got baptized… “what’s the Trinity?”
And they respond… “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so”?
...no problem!
But if five years later, they say the same thing?...that’s a problem.
We’re not saved by knowledge… but saved people wanna grow in knowledge.
So often we make knowledge of God a utilitarian thing…
…like “what’s the least I have to know to be saved?”
But what if someone said this to you on a first date?
“Ok… so what’s the least I have to know about you for you to marry me?”
So often, don’t we treat God the same way?
Give me salvation, answer my prayers…but do not ask me to learn more about you.

Because of Jesus… there is a way to salvation, there is a way to knowing God.
Being saved and knowing God totally transforms how you live in this world,
which brings us to our final point.
Reason #3: There is a way to a significant life (12-14).
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
Jesus’ disciples…Christians… will do greater works than Jesus?!
If this wasn’t written in the Bible… it would sound like heresy!
How are Jesus’ disciples' works greater than Jesus’ works?
Three ways.
One, geographically.
Jesus’ entire life and ministry were in Israel, just half the size of Kyushu.
But starting in the book of Acts, the disciples spread the gospel…
…and now the gospel has come all the way to Japan!
Two, ethnically.
In the 3-year ministry of Jesus in the 4 Gospels, all his followers are ethnically Jewish.
But beginning in the book of Acts, non-Jews from all nations come to know God.
And today, there are Christians in every country on earth.
Three, numerically.
In Acts chapter 1, there were 120 scared disciples.
But in Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit is poured out and the church grows to 3,000 people in one day.
Now, 1/3rd of humanity claims to believe in Jesus Christ.
Christian, however insignificant you might feel… you are a part of this.

God wants to do great works through ordinary people like you and me…
but how is he gonna do it?
Jesus says…13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
Saying “in Jesus' name” at the end of a prayer is not a magical spell.
It doesn't obligate God to give you whatever you ask for.
John Piper says…Prayer is a wartime walkie-talkie, not an intercom to the butler.
No, praying in Jesus' name is praying in a way consistent with who Jesus is.
It's asking for things that align with God’s will and bring glory to the Father through the Son…
“God make me more like Jesus.”
“God let me walk closely with you.”
“God set me free from this sin.”
Because if you want what God wants… you will get whatever you want.
Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, says this.
“I used to ask God to help me. Then I asked God if I might help him. Finally, I ended up asking God to do his work in me and through me if he would be so pleased.”
Anything you’re not praying for… is a thing you’re trusting in your own power to change.
So what in your life seems unlikely to change?
Rebellious kids?
A failing marriage?
Unsaved family members?
Non-Christians…maybe you’re thinking your heart can never change.
“I could never believe…”
Jesus, the divine Son of God who defeated death and sits at the right hand of God, loves you and is ready to listen…
Call out to Jesus for whatever you need even if you think there’s no way he could provide it.
Ask Jesus to save you…even if you think there’s no way he could save you.
Because in that desperate place where it feels like there’s no way out…there’s good news.
Jesus is the way.
The only way to a significant life.
The only way to salvation.
The only way to know God.
