聖霊と仲良くなろう | Getting to Know the Holy Spirit ヨハネの福音書14章15～31 John 14:15-31

『スター・ウォーズ』の映画を見たことがある方は、「フォース」が物語の重要な要素だと知っていると思います。
フォースとは何でしょうか。
最初のスター・ウォーズ映画『スター・ウォーズ エピソード4／新たなる希望』で、オビ＝ワン・ケノービはこう説明しています。
「フォースとは、ジェダイに力を与えるものだ。すべての生き物が生み出すエネルギー・フィールドであり、我々を取り巻き、浸透し、そして銀河をひとつに結びつけている」
ジェダイにとって、フォースとは単なるエネルギーなので、フォースと人格的な関係を持つことはできません。
ジェダイはフォースそのものを深く知ろうとはしません。
彼らが望むのは、フォースを使いこなし、特別な力を得ることです。
悲しいことに、多くのクリスチャが聖霊をフォースのように扱ってしまいます。
聖霊についてよく理解していない人は少なくありません。
聖霊を、「自分でコントロールできる非人格的な力」のように考えてしまうのです。
ある行動を取ったり、特定の環境を作り出せば、聖霊が自分の望むことをしてくれるかのように考えてしまうのです。
あまりにも多くのクリスチャンが、聖霊を軽く見て、誤解してきました。
なので今日は、聖霊についてもっと知っていきましょう！
そこで、主にヨハネの福音書14章を見ていきます。
また、少し先のヨハネ15章、16章にも目を向けます。
皆さんは自己紹介をするとき、最初に何の話をしますか？
「お仕事は何ですか？」という質問をすることがよくあります。
もちろん、その人の仕事がその人の最も重要な部分ではありません。
でも、その人がどんな働きをしているかを知ると、その人の性格や人生について理解が深まります。
同じように、聖霊を知るためには、まず聖霊がどんな働きをしておられるのかを知る必要があります。
そこで今日は、「救いの働きにおける聖霊の三つの役割」を考えていきましょう。
まず、役割①は聖霊は私たちが神様との関係を持てるようにしてくださる（14:15-24）というものです。
イエス様は、15節から助け主である聖霊について次のように語られます。
15もしわたしを愛しているなら、あなたがたはわたしの戒めを守るはずです。
16 そしてわたしが父にお願いすると、父はもう一人の助け主をお与えくださり、その助け主がいつまでも、あなたがたとともにいるようにしてくださいます。
17a この方は真理の御霊です。
フォースとは違い、聖霊は、私たちが個人的な関係を持つことのできる人格をもったお方です。
そのことを明確にするために、イエス様は聖霊を指して「 この方」という人格を表す代名詞を用いておられます。
実は、イエス様がヨハネの福音書14:26, 15:26, 16:14で語っていることは、ギリシャ語の文法上では少し不自然なものなのです。
御霊」を意味する pneuma（プネウマ）という言葉は中性名詞なので、本来なら中性の代名詞が使われるはずですが、イエス様は、あえて「he（この方）」という男性形の代名詞を使われました。
イエス様は聖霊様に対して、“それ（it）”という物を指す言葉 ではなく、“この方（he）” という人を指す言葉を意図的に使っています。
だからこそ聖書全体を見ると、聖霊は人格を持つお方として描かれています。
聖霊は——
悲しまれることがあります（エペソ人への手紙4:30）
冒涜されることがあります（マルコの福音書3:29）
消されることがあります（Ⅰテサロニケ人への手紙5:19）
欺（あざむ）かれることがあります（使徒の働き5:4）
また、ヨハネの福音書14:17で語られているように、知ることのできるお方 です。
イエス様はこのように言いました。： 17 この方は真理の御霊です。世はこの方を見ることも知ることもないので、受け入れることができません。あなたがたは、この方を知っています。この方はあなたがたとともにおられ、また、あなたがたのうちにおられるようになるのです。18わたしは、あなたがたを捨てて孤児にはしません。あなたがたのところに戻って来ます。
イエス様は、聖霊により、今もクリスチャン一人ひとりのうちに臨在しておられます。
宗教改革者のジァン・カルヴァンはこう言いました。「聖霊は、キリストが私たちをご自身と実際に結び合わせる絆である。」
私たちが持つあらゆる聖書の理解、神様へのあらゆる従順、イエス様への愛は、すべて聖霊によって可能にされているものなのです。
Ⅰコリント12章（3節）ではこのように語られています。「聖霊によるのでなければ、だれも「イエスは主です」と言うことはできません。」
もし信仰生活が PlayStation 5 のようなテレビゲームをすることだとしたら、
聖霊は大きなテレビ画面のようなものです。
ゲーム機そのものはあっても、テレビがなければゲームを体験することはできません。
同じように、聖霊なしには、私たちは神様を体験することができないのです。

そして、ヨハネ14章で語られたイエス様の言葉は、旧約聖書の重要な預言を成就するものでした。
旧約の契約共同体であったイスラエルは、信じる者と信じない者が混在している共同体でした。
しかし預言者エレミヤは、神様がご自分の民と「新しい契約」を結ばれる日が来ることを預言していました。
31 見よ、その時代が来る──主のことば──。そのとき、わたしはイスラエルの家およびユダの家と、新しい契約を結ぶ。...
33bわたしは、わたしの律法を彼らのただ中に置き、彼らの心にこれを書き記す。わたしは彼らの神となり、彼らはわたしの民となる。34a彼らはもはや、それぞれ隣人に、あるいはそれぞれ兄弟に、『主を知れ』と言って教えることはない。彼らがみな、身分の低い者から高い者まで、わたしを知るようになるからだ
教会とは、聖霊によって生み出され、イエス様を知り、イエス様に従う人たちの共同体です。
では、教会とこの世とを分けるものは何でしょうか。
ヨハネの14章16節で語られているように、イエス様を愛し、従っていくことです。
またヨハネの14章17節で語られているように、聖霊を見て、知って、受け入れていることです。
イエス様以前の旧約の契約の下では、神の民の一員になることは生まれながらに決まっているものでした。
そして、そのしるしが割礼というものでした。
しかし、イエス様が来られた後、新しい契約の下では、神の民の一員になることは「新しく生まれること」によって決まるものとなりました。
そのしるしが洗礼です。
だから、人は元々「クリスチャンとして生まれる」ことはできないのです。
だから、私自身の子どもたちも含め、教会メンバーの子どもたちは自動的に教会のメンバーになるわけではありません。
新しい契約の共同体の一員となるには、自ら信じ、洗礼を受けなければならないのです。
クリスチャンの親を持つことは大きな祝福ですが、それだけでは十分ではありません。
自分自身で神様を知らなければならないのです。

私たちが知るよう招かれている神とは、父、子、聖霊からなる三位一体の神様です。
私たちが交わりを持つことのできる「漠然とした神」という存在はありません。
おられるのは、父と子と聖霊なる神だけです。
そしてヨハネ14章では、私たちは三位一体のそれぞれのお方と人格的な関係を持つことができるということが示されています。
17節：私たちは、私たちと共におられ、私たちの内に住んでおられる聖霊を知ることができます。
23節：私たちは、私たちのところに来て住まわれる父なる神と御子イエスを知ることができます。
クリスチャンは、父なる神や皇子イエスに祈ることには慣れています。
しかし、聖霊に関しては、あまり慣れていないかもしれません。
なので、明確にすると...
聖霊は私たちが知ることができる人格を持つお方です。
また、聖霊は私たちが祈ることのできる神様です。
部屋に入る前に、「聖霊様、この場所であなたがなさっておられることに、私も加わらせてください。」と祈ることができます。
聖書を開く前に、「聖霊様、この御言葉を理解できるように助けてください。」と祈ることができます。
まだイエス様を信じていない人と話す前に、「聖霊様、この会話の中でお語りください。」と祈り求めることもできます。

こうして、聖霊が私たちを神様との関係へ導いてくださることを説明した後、イエス様は19節で、少し不思議なことを語られます。
あと少しで、世はもうわたしを見なくなります。しかし、あなたがたはわたしを見ます。...
イエス様は、ご自分が死んで復活なさるので、この世の人々はもはやご自分を見ることができなくなる、とおっしゃられます。
しかし同時に、「弟子たちはわたしを見る」とも言われるのです。
どういうことでしょうか。
その答えを求めて、救いの働きにおける聖霊の役割②を見ていきましょう。
聖霊はイエスについて証しするお方です。（ヨハネ14:25、15:26-27、16:13-14）
これだと少し抽象的に聞こえると思うので、ここで御霊はどのようにイエスについて証しされるのか見ていきましょう。
御霊は、新約聖書の執筆を導き、見守られました。
聖霊は主に聖書を通して、イエス様がどのようなお方なのかを私たちに示してくださいます。
だからイエス様は、ヨハネ15:26で使徒たちに次のように言われました。
26 わたしが父のもとから遣わす助け主、すなわち、父から出る真理の御霊が来るとき、その方がわたしについて証ししてくださいます。27 あなたがたも証しします。初めからわたしと一緒にいたからです。
イエスによって選ばれたこの使徒たちが、新約聖書の27巻を書き記しました。
なぜ彼らだったのでしょうか。
27節によると彼らは「初めからイエス様と一緒にいたからです。
彼らは、イエス様の復活の証人となるために、神様により選ばれ、聖霊によって力を与えられました。
ヨハネ14章25節には、新約聖書がどのようにして書かれることになったのか、その一端を見ることができます。
25 これらのことを、わたしはあなたがたと一緒にいる間に話しました。26 しかし、助け主、すなわち、父がわたしの名によってお遣わしになる聖霊は、あなたがたにすべてのことを教え、わたしがあなたがたに話したすべてのことを思い起こさせてくださいます。
これがとても重要なのは、使徒たちが新約聖書を書いたのは、イエスの生涯から数十年後だったからです。
しかし聖霊は、彼らがイエス様の教えを正確に思い起こせるようと助けられ、それにより、イエス様の言葉がすべての時代の人のために保存されました。
使徒たちの次の世代に生きた、殉教者ユスティノスは、初代教会が新約聖書をどのように受け取っていたかについて次のように書いています。
日曜日と呼ばれる日に、町に住む者も田舎に住む者も一つの場所に集まり、時間の許す限り、使徒たちの回想録、あるいは預言者たちの書が朗読された。
教会の歴史の初期から、使徒たちの回想録すなわち新約聖書は、旧約聖書の預言者たちの書と並んで、神の言葉として読まれていました。
そしてそれはすべて、ヨハネ14章26節でイエス様が約束された通り、聖霊が使徒たちにすべてのことを教え、イエス様が語られたすべてのことを思い起こさせてくださったものでした。
つまり、神の御霊は、神の御言葉を用いて、神の御子について証しされるということです。
なぜなら、聖霊の最優先事項は、人々の注目をイエス・キリストへと向けることだからです。
イエス様はヨハネの福音書16章13節でこう語られます。
3 しかし、その方、すなわち真理の御霊が来ると、あなたがたをすべての真理に導いてくださいます。御霊は自分から語るのではなく、聞いたことをすべて語り、これから起こることをあなたがたに伝えてくださいます。14 御霊はわたしの栄光を現されます。わたしのものを受けて、あなたがたに伝えてくださるのです。
聖霊が働いておられることは、どうすれば分かるのでしょうか。
ワクワクする気持ちによってでしょうか？
自ら何かをしたいという思いによってでしょうか？
奇跡を通してでしょうか？
確かに、これらは聖霊が働いておられる印かもしれません。
しかし、聖霊なしにも、これらのことは起こるかもしれません。
誰だってワクワクしたり、衝動的に行動することができます。
悪魔でさえ奇跡を行うことがあります。
では、本当に聖霊が働いているかどうかを見分ける基準はどこにあるのでしょうか。
イエス様と十字架が大きく尊ばれていることでしょうか？
人々が、イエス・キリストへの愛と礼拝へと導かれていることでしょうか？
ヨハネ16章14節で、イエス様は聖霊について 14 御霊はわたしの栄光を現されます。とおっしゃられました。
聖霊の最も重要な働きは、ご自身にスポットライトを当てることではなく、その光をイエス様へと向けることです。
だからか、私は、長年多くのクリスチャンからこんな質問を聞いてきました。
「なぜ私たちは、もっと聖霊について語らないのですか？」
もちろん、聖霊様は神です。
私たちは正しく聖霊を礼拝し、聖霊に祈るべきです。
しかし神様の救いのご計画の中では、
御子が父を現し、聖霊が御子の栄光を現されます。
もしキリストが神様の臨在への「扉」だとするならば、
聖霊はその扉を開く「鍵」のようなお方です。
だから、私たちは、イエス・キリストに目を向けることでが聖霊を尊ぶことになるのです。

聖霊様は今も、世界中で人々の目をイエスへと向ける働きを続けておられます。
最後のポイント③に進みましょう。
聖霊は、この世に罪を自覚させるお方です。（ヨハネ15:16、16:7-11）
イエス様はヨハネの福音書14:16で語られます。16 そしてわたしが父にお願いすると、父はもう一人の助け主をお与えくださり、その助け主がいつまでも、あなたがたとともにいるようにしてくださいます。
なぜイエスは聖霊を「もう一人の助け主」と呼ばれたのでしょうか。
それは、聖霊がイエス様の死と復活の後も、イエス様の働きを引き継がれるからです。
1990年代に大人気だったコメディに、「ベルエアのフレッシュ・プリンス」という番組がありました。
しかし番組シーズンの途中で、「ヴィヴおばさん」を演じていた女優が、主演のウィルスミスと対立してしまいます。
そこで制作陣は、番組を続けるために、何の説明もなく「ヴィヴおばさん」の俳優を別の人に交代させました。
視聴者は、愛されていた俳優が突然入れ替わったことにがっかりしました。
しかし、聖霊はそのような「急遽代役として入った存在」ではなく、何世紀も前から預言されていたお方です。
旧約聖書の預言者ヨエルは、終わりの日に神様がご自分の霊をすべての人に注ぐと預言していました。
だから聖霊様は、「イエス様の代わりを務める、がっかりするような代役」ではありません。
むしろヨハネ16章7節で、イエスご自身がこのようにおっしゃられます——。わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのです。去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はおいでになりません。でも、行けば、わたしはあなたがたのところに助け主を遣わします。
よく考えてみてください。
イエス様が仰っているのは「目の前にイエス様が立っている状態よりも、聖霊に満たされている方が良い」ということなのです。
たとえば、イスラエルに行けば、聖書の舞台となった歴史的な場所を見て、素晴らしい経験を得られます。
しかし、私たちは日本にいたとしても、イスラエルにいる人と同じようにイエス様に近づくことができるのです。
詩篇139篇が語るように、聖霊様はどこにでもおられるからです。
そして聖霊を通して、復活されたキリストは今も世界中で働いておられます。
さらにイエス様はヨハネ16章8節で、聖霊の働きはクリスチャンだけに限定されていないと教えておられます。
8 その方（御霊）が来ると、罪について、義について、さばきについて、世の誤りを明らかになさいます。 9 罪についてというのは、彼らがわたしを信じないからです。10 義についてとは、わたしが父のもとに行き、あなたがたがもはやわたしを見なくなるからです。11 さばきについてとは、この世を支配する者がさばかれたからです。
まだクリスチャンではない皆さん、今日ここに来てくださったことを本当にうれしく思います。
聖霊は、皆さんにいくつか大切なことに気づいて欲しいと願っておられると、イエス様は語られます。
9節では、「罪」についてです。私たちは罪人であり、救われるためにはイエス様を信じる必要があります。
10節では、「義」についてです。私たち自分自身の正しさでは、神様の御前に立つことはできません。
もし神様が求める正しさが M1エイブラムスの戦車だったとしたら、
私たち人間の正しさは水鉄砲のようなものです。
しかし、私たちが信じるならば、義なるお方であるイエス・キリストがご自身の義を私たちに与えてくださいます。
11節では、「さばき」についてです。やがて最終的なさばきの日が来る時、悪魔と、悪魔に惑わされたこの世はさばかれます。
もし私たちが罪にしがみつき、自分自身の義という正しさにしがみつくならば、そのさばきの日には有罪と宣告されるでしょう。
しかし、もしイエス様に私たちの罪を赦していただき、イエスの義を受け取るならば、イエス様は私たちをそのさばきから救ってくださいます。

クリスチャンの皆さん、聖霊が働いておられるということは、私たちが何も語らなくてもよい、という意味ではありません。
ヨハネの福音書 15:26…26b 父から出る真理の御霊が来るとき、その方がわたしについて証ししてくださいます。27a あなたがたも証しします。
新しく生まれること、そしてイエス様への信仰は、聖霊が与えてくださる賜物です。ヨハネ3章5節から。
5 イエスは答えられた。「まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。人は、水と御霊によって生まれなければ、神の国に入ることはできません。...8風は思いのままに吹きます。その音を聞いても、それがどこから来てどこへ行くのか分かりません。御霊によって生まれた者もみな、それと同じです。」
誰も聖霊の働きをコントロールすることはできません。
また、誰かがいつ信じるようになるのかを予測することもできません。
“いのちを与えるのは御霊です。肉は何の益ももたらしません。” と書かれているようにだからこそ、私たちは伝道において大きな確信を持つことができるのです。
ある人はこう言いました。「福音を伝えることは、雷雨の中を歩き回りながら避雷針を配るようなものだ。」
私たちは福音を語り、避雷針を配り歩きます。
聖霊様が働いて、その人の心を打ち砕き、信仰へと導いてくださることを願いながら。

フォースとは何でしょうか？
それは、人間がコントロールできる非人格的なエネルギーです。
聖霊とは何者でしょうか？
それは、人を支配し導かれる神ご自身の人格的な臨在です。
最後に、320年頃に生きた偉大なアフリカの神学者、アタナシウスの言葉をご紹介します。
イエス・キリストは今も力強く人々の間で働いておられる。毎日、世界中の多くの人の心に目に見えない形で働きかけ、ご自身の信仰を受け入れ、その教えに従うよう導いておられる。これを見てもなお、キリストが復活し、今も生きておられることを疑うことができるだろうか。死んだ人間が、人々の良心を貫き、人々に先祖伝来の慣習を捨てさせ、キリストの教えの前にひざまずかせることなどできるだろうか。

If you’ve ever seen any of the Star Wars movies, you would know that the Force is a major part of the story.
What is the Force?
Obi-Wan Kenobi describes it in the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.。
The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.
For the Jedi, the Force is just an energy field… so you can’t have a relationship with it.
The Jedi don’t really care to understand the Force.
They just wanna master the Force to get special powers.
Sadly, a lot of Christians treat the Holy Spirit like the Force.
Many understand little about the Holy Spirit.
They think of the Holy Spirit as an impersonal life force you can control.
Like if you do certain actions or create the right environment… the Holy Spirit will do what you want.
Far too many Christians have neglected and mis-understood the Holy Spirit.
So… let’s get to know the Holy Spirit.
To do that, we’re gonna look primarily at John 14.
But, we’ll also jump ahead a little and look at John 15 and 16.
When you do 自己紹介... self-introduction, what’s one of the first things you say?
“What do you do?”
A person’s job is not the most important thing about them.
But knowing about their work helps you learn about their personality and life story.
To get to know the Holy Spirit… we need to understand his work.
So let’s consider three roles of the Holy Spirit in the work of salvation.
First, the Holy Spirit enables relationship with God (14:15-24).
Jesus says this about the Helper, the Holy Spirit, in v15.
15 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17a even the Spirit of truth…
Unlike the Force… the Holy Spirit is a person you can have a relationship with.
To make this clear, Jesus describes the Holy Spirit with personal pronouns…
In John 14:26, 15:26, and 16:14 Jesus says something that breaks the rules of Greek grammar.
Jesus uses the neuter word for Spirit, pneuma, with a masculine pronoun, “he.”
Jesus chooses his words deliberately to make sure we understand that the Holy Spirit is a “he”…and not an “it.”
Which is why throughout Scripture, we see the Holy Spirit can be…
Grieved… Ephesians 4:30.
Blasphemed… Mark 3:29.
Quenched… 1 Thessalonians 5:19.
Lied to… Acts 5:4
And, in John 14:17… known.
Jesus says: 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Jesus is personally present with Christians by the Holy Spirit.
John Calvin says “The Holy Spirit is the bond by which Christ effectually unites us to himself.
All Bible knowledge… all obedience to God… all love for Jesus is enabled by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12 says “no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.”
If living the Christian life is like playing a Playstation 5…
…the Holy Spirit is like a big screen TV.
Without the TV, you can’t experience the game.
Likewise, without the Spirit… you can’t experience God.

Jesus’ words in John 14 fulfill a key Old Testament prophecy.
Israel, the old covenant community… was a mixed body of believers and unbelievers.
But the prophet Jeremiah foresaw a day when God would make a new covenant with his people.
31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…33b I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34a And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me.
The church is a community of people, created by the Holy Spirit, who know and obey Jesus.
And what distinguishes the church from the world?
John 14:16…loving and obeying Jesus.
But also John 14:17…receiving, seeing, and knowing, the Holy Spirit.
In the Old Covenant…before Jesus… membership in the people of God was by natural birth.
This was recognized by circumcision.
In the New Covenant… after Jesus…membership in the people of God is by new birth.
This is recognized by baptism.
This is why you can’t be born a Christian.
This is why children of church members, like my own kids, aren’t automatically members.
You must believe and be baptized to be a member of the new covenant community.
Having Christian parents is a blessing…but its not enough.
You must personally know God.

The God we’re called to know is Triune… Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
There is no “God in general” you can have fellowship with.
There is only the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
And what John 14 shows us is… you can cultivate a personal relationship with each member of the Trinity.
v17…we can know the Holy Spirit who dwells with us and is in us.
v23… we can know the Father and Son who come and make their home with us.
Christians are used to praying to the Father and the Son.
But the Holy Spirit… not so much.
So, just so it's clear…
The Holy Spirit is a person, so you can know him.
The Holy Spirit is God, so you can pray to him.
Before walking into a room, you can pray… “Holy Spirit, I wanna be a part of whatever you’re doing here.
Before reading the Bible, you can say… “Holy Spirit, help me understand.”
Before a conversation with an unbeliever, you can ask… “Holy Spirit, speak through me in this conversation.”

After explaining how the Holy Spirit enables relationship with God, Jesus says something mysterious in v19.
19a Yet a little while and the world will see me no more,but you will see me…
Jesus says because he’s going to die and rise from the dead, the world won’t be able to see him.
But… Jesus’ disciples will see him?
How does that work?
Let’s unpack that in the next role of the Holy Spirit in the work of salvation.
The Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus (14:25, 15:26-27, 16:13-14).
This sounds a little abstract… so here’s how the Spirit bears witness to Jesus.
The Spirit oversaw the writing of the New Testament.
The primary way the Spirit bears witness to Jesus is the Bible.
Which is why Jesus says this to the apostles in John 15:26.
26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
These apostles Jesus appointed wrote the 27 books of the New Testament.
Why them?
Because v27, they were with Jesus from the beginning.
These men were chosen and empowered by the Spirit to bear witness to Jesus’ resurrection.
In John 14:25, we get a glimpse into how the New Testament came together.
25 These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
This is important because the apostles wrote the New Testament books several decades after the life of Jesus.
But the Holy Spirit helped them remember what Jesus taught so it could be preserved for all generations.
Justin Martyr, who lived in the generation right after the apostles… wrote about how the early church received the New Testament writings.
And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits.
From the earliest days of church history… the New Testament “memoirs of the apostles” were read and received as Scripture alongside the Old Testament prophets.
And this was all because, John 14:26, the Spirit taught Jesus’ apostles all things and brought to their remembrance all that Jesus said to them.
The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to bear witness to the Son of God.
Because the Spirit’s priority is focusing attention on Jesus Christ.
Jesus says this in John 16:13...
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
How do you know when the Holy Spirit is at work?
Excitement?
Spontaneity?
Miracles?
All these might be a sign the Holy Spirit is at work.
But you could also have all these things without the Holy Spirit.
Anyone can get excited or do things spontaneously.
The Devil can do miracles.
So here’s the real test of the Spirit’s work.
Is Jesus and his cross being made much of?
Are people being led into growing love for and worship of Jesus Christ?
In John 16:14, Jesus says of the Spirit… 14 he will glorify me.
The Spirit’s primary ministry is to point the spotlight away from himself and onto Jesus.
Which leads to a question I’ve heard many Christians ask over the years.
“Why don’t we talk about the Holy Spirit more?”
To be sure, the Holy Spirit is God.
We rightly worship and pray to the Holy Spirit.
But in God’s plan of salvation…
The Son makes the Father known, and the Spirit glorifies the Son.
If Christ is the door into God’s presence…
…the Holy Spirit is the key who unlocks the door.
So… you honor the Holy Spirit by focusing on Jesus Christ.

The Spirit of God is doing this work of pointing to Jesus all over the world.
Which brings us to our final point.
The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin (14:16, 16:7-11).
Jesus says in John 14:16, 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.
Why does Jesus call the Holy Spirit another Helper?
Because the Spirit will continue Jesus’ ministry after his death and resurrection.
One of the most popular sitcoms of the 90s was the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Half way through the show, the actor for a main character named Aunt Viv, had a conflict with Will Smith.
So to keep the show running, without any explanation at all…they replaced the actor for Aunt Viv.
The fans were disappointed that a beloved actor was unexpectedly replaced.
The Holy Spirit was not a last minute casting change… he was prophesied for centuries.
The Old Testament prophet Joel wrote that in the last days that God would pour out his Spirit on all flesh.
And the Holy Spirit is not a disappointing fill-in actor for Jesus.
No, in John 16:7, Jesus says…it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
Let that sink in…
Jesus says its better to be filled with the Holy Spirit than to have Jesus standing right in front of you.
So, for example, going to Israel might be a nice experience to see historical Bible places.
But you can be just as close to Jesus in Japan as Israel.
Psalm 139 says the Holy Spirit is present everywhere.
And though the Holy Spirit, the risen Christ is still at work all over the world.
Jesus says in John 16:8, the Holy Spirit’s work is not limited to Christians.
8 And when [the Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Non-Christian friends, we’re so glad you’re here today.
Jesus says… the Holy Spirit wants to make you aware of a few things.
v9, sin…. you have sinned and need to believe in Jesus to be saved.
v10, righteousness…your righteousness is not good enough to stand before God.
If the righteousness God requires is an M1 Abrams tank…
…your righteousness is a squirt gun.
Jesus Christ the righteous, will be your righteousness… if you will believe.
v11, judgement….there will be a final judgment where the Devil and the world he deceived will be judged.
If you cling to sin, cling to your own righteousness…in the final judgment you will be condemned.
But if you let Jesus forgive you and give you his righteousness... he will save you from that judgment.

Christians, the Holy Spirit working doesn't mean we don’t speak.
John 15:26…26b the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
New birth… faith in Jesus is the gift of the Holy Spirit…John 3:5.
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God….8The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
No one can control the Holy Spirit’s work.
No one can predict when someone will believe.
The Spirit gives life, the flesh is no help at all…and that should give us tremendous confidence in evangelism.
As someone once said... sharing the gospel is like walking around in a thunderstorm and handing out lightning rods.
We preach the gospel… we hand out the lightning rods…
…in the hopes that the Spirit will strike and people will believe.

An impersonal energy field that can be controlled by people.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The personal presence of God who takes control of people.
As we close… listen to what Athanasius, the great African theologian, wrote in 320 AD.
Jesus Christ is working mightily among men, every day he is invisibly persuading numbers of people all over the world…to accept his faith and be obedient to his teaching. Can anyone, in face of this, still doubt that Christ has risen and lives? Does a dead man prick the consciences of men, so that they throw all the traditions of their fathers to the winds and bow down before the teaching of Christ?
