実を結ぶために選ばれた| Chosen to Bear Fruit ヨハネの福音書15章1～16 John 15:1-16

私の妻は、北カリフォルニアのソノマ・カウンティで生まれました。
ソノマは、世界でも有数のワインの産地として知られています。
私の義理の母もワイナリーで働いています。
またワイン造りは参入するのが非常に難しい産業だといわれています。
ぶどう畑への投資は莫大なものだからです。
まず岩が多く乾燥した土地を見つけなければなりません。
そして何百万、何千万というお金を投じて土地を購入し、開墾し、整備する必要があります。
そして——待ちます。
ぶどう畑から最初のワインを味わえるようになるまで、通常3年から5年はかかると言われています。
”なのでワイン事業を始めようとする人に、投資家ならば、「実り豊かなぶどう畑を作るために、どんな計画を持っていますか？」と尋ねると思います。
ヨハネ15章で、イエス様は神様をぶどう園の主人に例えています。
そのぶどう園とは神の民、教会のことです。
神様は、ご自分の民の成長のために、計り知れないほど多くのものを注いでこられました。
ここで今日のメインポイントです。
神様は、キリストにあるご自分の民が豊かな実を結ぶことを、心から願っておられます。
神様は、ご自分の民が実を結ぶために、どんな計画を持っておられるのでしょうか。
ヨハネ15章は「イエス様にとどまること」と語ります。
そこで考えたいのは
まず、「イエスにとどまる」とは何を意味するのか。
そして次に、実際にイエスにとどまるとはどのような生き方なのか。
まず最初に、「イエスにとどまる」とは何を意味するのか。（1〜6節、8節）
1節からイエス様は語ります。1 わたしはまことのぶどうの木、わたしの父は農夫です。2わたしの枝で実を結ばないものはすべて、父がそれを取り除き、実を結ぶものはすべて、もっと多く実を結ぶように、刈り込みをなさいます。
実というものは、おいしいだけではなく、役立つものでもあります。
イエス様がここで語る「実」とは、神様に栄光を帰し、神の国の前進に役立つ良い行いのことです。
実とは、従順、愛、祈り、喜びなど、イエス様について証しするものです。
2節を見ると、神様のぶどう園には二種類の枝があります。
一つは、実を結ぶ枝。
もう一つは、実を結ばない枝です。
この二種類の枝は、どちらも外面的にはキリストと教会につながっている人々を表しています。
どちらも自分をクリスチャンだと名乗ります。
どちらも目に見える教会の交わりの中にいます。
しかし、ぶどう園の農夫である神様は、この二種類の枝を同じようには扱われません。
わたしの枝で実を結ばないものはすべて、父がそれを取り除き、
実がないならば、いのちはありません。
植物のいのちは、その実によって生み出されるわけではありません。
しかし、いのちのある植物は実を結びます。
同じように、永遠のいのちを持つ人は実を結ぶということです。
変えられた人生なしには、救いはありません。変えられた人生が救いを生み出すというわけではありません。
救いをもたらすのは、イエス様への信仰のみです。
しかし、もし人生に何の変化も見られないならば、その人は自分が救われているとは言えないかもしれません。
マルティン・ルターはこのように言いました。「私たちは信仰のみによって救われるが、その救われる信仰は決して単独ではない」
つまり、本物の信仰は必ず実を結ぶということです。だからこそ、イエス様は8節でこう言われるのです——。
8 あなたがたが多くの実を結び、わたしの弟子となることによって、わたしの父は栄光をお受けになります。
なので神様は、実を結ばない枝を取り除かれるのです。
これは、キリストと教会から離れていく人々のことを指しています。
実は最近、私が洗礼を受けた教会の長老の一人が、イエス様から離れてしまったことを知りました。
その方は、私と妻に大きな影響を与えてくれた人だったので、今も、その方が再び主のもとへ帰ってくるよう祈っています。
しかし、人が信仰から離れていく時でさえ、ぶどう園の農夫である神様は働いておられます。
１ヨハネの手紙2章19節はこう語ります。19彼らは私たちの中から出て行きましたが、もともと私たちの仲間ではなかったのです。もし仲間であったなら、私たちのもとに、とどまっていたでしょう。しかし、出て行ったのは、彼らがみな私たちの仲間でなかったことが明らかにされるためだったのです。
「でも、その人は本気でイエス様を信じる祈りをしたんですよね？ だったら今も救われているんじゃないですか？」
いいえ。救われる者は最後まで信仰にとどまり続けるのです。
イエス様は6節でこのようにおっしゃられます——。6 わたしにとどまっていなければ、その人は枝のように投げ捨てられて枯れます。人々がそれを集めて火に投げ込むので、燃えてしまいます。
枯れた枝が薪として使われるように、霊的に死んだ人たちは永遠の火の中に投げ込まれます。

実を結ぶ枝も、苦しみを免れるわけではありません。2節です。
実を結ぶものはすべて、もっと多く実を結ぶように、刈り込みをなさいます。
先日、教会スタッフのウィリアムが私の家に来ました。
その時、私の家のベランダにあるトマトの苗が、とても大きく育っていて、枝があちこちに伸び、見るからに立派だったのですが、
ウィリアムは「大きいことは、必ずしも健康な証拠じゃないよ。」と言いました。
実は、実を結ばない枝が、実を結ぶ枝の栄養を奪っていたのです。
だから彼は思い切った刈り込みを勧めました。
枝の3分の1ほどを切り落とさなければならない、と。
私たちは、「本当に大丈夫なの？」と思いました。
でも……彼の言う通りでした！
では、なぜあの人はイエス様から離れてしまったのでしょうか。
神様は、実を結ばないものはすべて取り除かれるからです。
人々を罪へ導く偽りの信者や、分裂を引き起こす者、偽りの教えを広める者を取り除かれるからです。
では、なぜ、苦しみのある私たちは今こんなにも苦しんでいるのでしょうか。
もしかすると、私たちが実を結ぶ枝だからかもしれません。
そして神様は、私たちがさらに実を結ぶようにと、刈り込みをなさっておられるのかもしれません。
北カリフォルニアのような地域が、なぜ良質なワインの産地になるのでしょうか。
岩が多く、厳しい土壌だからです。
水が少なく乾燥した環境では、ぶどうの木は生き残るために苦闘します。
しかし、その苦闘こそが世界最高級のワインを生み出すのです。
神様は、皆さんを岩だらけの土地に植えておられます。
経済的なストレスがあるかもしれません。
健康の問題があるかもしれません。
独身でいることに疲れ、孤独に疲れ果てているかもしれません。
でも、キリストにあるならば、神様はあなたを罰しておられるわけではありません。
私たちの罪に対するすべての罰は、2000年前にイエス様の上に注がれたのです。
今私たちが経験しているのは、父なる神様の訓練です。
ヘブル人への手紙12章10節で、神様は、私たちの益のために、私たちをご自分の聖さにあずからせようとして訓練されると語ります。
神様は、私たちを上質なワインに作り上げようとしておられるのです。
聖さを与え、キリストに似た者へと作り上げようとしておられるのです。
農夫である神様は、私たちに必要な水や土、日の光が与えてくださいます。
私たちが実を結ぶことができるように神様は人生の状況を整えてくださいます。
愛をもって、実を結ぶ妨げとなるものを取り除かれます。
なぜなら、神様は私たちが快適さを求める以上に、私たちを聖さにあずからせたいと願っておられるからです。
私は以前、心のどこかでこう考えていました。「もし私が忠実なクリスチャンならば、人生がひどいことになるにも限度があるはずだ。」
でも、それは真実ではありません。
神様は、私たちの最終的な永遠の益のために働いておられるのです。
しかし、その益は必ずしも私たち自身が選びたいものとは限りません。
それでも、私たちの人生が神様の御手の中にあると知っているからこそ、私たちは安心することができるのです。3節です。
3節でイエス様はこのように言いました。あなたがたは、わたしがあなたがたに話したことばによって、すでにきよいのです。
2節の「刈り込み」と、3節の「きよい」という言葉は、ギリシャ語では同じ語根から来ています。
2節では、私たちは刈り込まれる、あるいはきよめられる者として描かれています。（καθαίρω kathairō カタイロ-）
3節では、私たちはすでにきよい者であると言われています。（καθαρός katharos カタロス）
キリストにある私たちは、イエス様が語られた御言葉によって、すでにきよいのです。
ヨハネの福音書 5:24でイエス様はおっしゃられます。まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。わたしのことばを聞いて、わたしを遣わされた方を信じる者は、永遠のいのちを持...っています。
私たちが悔い改めてイエス様に立ち返るとき、私たちは罪から完全にきよめられます。
過去の罪も、現在の罪も、未来の罪も、すべて拭い去られます。
しかし同時に、私たちには継続的なきよめも必要なのです。
私たちは毎日悔い改め、毎日イエス様に立ち返る必要があるのです。
でも、こんな疑問が生まれるかもしれません。
クリスチャンがキリストにとどまり続け、悔い改め続けなければならないのならば、ヨハネ10章でイエス様が約束された「わたしの羊は決して滅び...ません」という言葉はどうなるのでしょうか。
私たちはイエス様にとどまり、積極的に罪と戦い続けます。
そして同時に、イエス様ご自身が私たちを守り続けてくださるのです。
１ヨハネの手紙 5:18でイエス様はおっしゃられます。18 神から生まれた者はみな罪を犯さないこと、神から生まれた方がその人（イエス）を守っておられ、悪い者はその人に触れることができないことを、私たちは知っています。
どうして今朝、私たちはまだクリスチャンとして目覚めたのでしょうか。
神様が一瞬一瞬、私たちを支え続けてくださっているからです。
神様は教会の集まり、説教、聖餐式、聖書、祈り、苦しみ——ありとあらゆるものを用いて、私たちがイエス様に従い続けるようにと守ってくださいるのです。
だから、実を結べるだろうかとか、信仰から離れてしまうのではないかと、不安になる必要はないのです。
「どうしよう、良い実を結べなかったら……」なんて心配しなくてよいのです。
神様は私たちが良い実を結べるようにと、私たちに力を尽くしてくださっているからです。
私は大学卒業後、仕事探しに苦労し、不安になっていました。
そんな時、Total Quality Logisticsという会社のことを聞きました。
この会社はほとんど誰でも採用します。
でも、半年以内に80％の人が辞めてしまうのです。
初日に解雇される人さえいます。
その仕事はプレッシャーの大きい営業職で、ひたすら飛び込み営業や電話営業をしなければなりません。
「結果を出せなければクビ。」そんな世界です。
しかし、イエス様に従ってゆくことは、そんな高圧的な営業職ではありません。
イエス様は、「良い実はどこだ！？」と怒鳴る短気で厳しい上司ではなく、忍耐深い農夫です。
イエス様は、私たちが良い実を結ぶようにと献身しておられるお方です。
だからイエス様は4節で次のようにおっしゃられるのです——。
4 わたしにとどまりなさい。わたしもあなたがたの中にとどまります。枝がぶどうの木にとどまっていなければ、自分では実を結ぶことができないのと同じように、あなたがたもわたしにとどまっていなければ、実を結ぶことはできません。5 わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたは枝です。
次の箇所にご注目ください...
人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人にとどまっているなら、その人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何でもすることができる。
あれ、なんか違いますね。「わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何かをすることができる」
まだなんか違いますね。「わたしを離れては、あなたがたは...何もすることができません！」が正しいですね！
イエス様なしで霊的な価値のあることを何かしようとすること。
信仰なしに実を結ぼうとすること。
それはまるで、お店でトマトを買ってきて、そのトマトをトマトの苗にホチキスで留めるようなものです。
しかし、神様の命令に従う力は、私たち自身から出てくるものではありません。
ある男の子がお母さんに「お母さん、誕生日に何が欲しい？」と聞きました。
お母さんは「香り付きのキャンドルがあったらうれしいな。」と答えます。
「それいくらするの？」
「1000円くらいかな。」
「そっか……ところでお母さん、1000円持ってる？」
私たちは、プレゼントを買いたいのに、お金を持っていないこの男の子と同じようなものです。
しかし、恵みが従うことを可能にしてくれるのです。

イエスにとどまるとは、まことのぶどうの木であるイエスのいのちが私たちの内に流れ、実を結ぶようになることです。
では、私たちはどうすればそのぶどうの木からいのちを受け続けられるのでしょうか？
もっと実践的に、もっと具体的に考えてみましょう。明日から何をすればよいのでしょうか。
イエス様にとどまるとは、具体的にどのような生き方なのでしょうか。（8〜16節）
その一つは、イエス様の御言葉を祈ることです。
7節でイエス様はおっしゃられます。あなたがたがわたしにとどまり、わたしのことばがあなたがたにとどまっているなら、何でも欲しいものを求めなさい。そうすれば、それはかなえられます。
「何でも欲しいものを求めなさい。そうすれば、それはかなえられます」すごい約束ですね。
でも、小さな文字の部分も読まなければなりません。
祈りが聞かれるためには、二つの条件があります。
あなたがたがイエスにとどまること。
そして、イエスのことばがあなたがたにとどまること。
祈りが聞かれないという経験は、本当につらいものです。
祈りが聞かれない理由は様々です。
しかし、その理由の一つは、神様が望んでおられること、つまり御言葉によって示されていることを求めていないからかもしれません。
私たちは御言葉にとどまる必要があります。
そして御言葉を祈る必要があります。
しかし、御言葉を読まなければ、どうやって御言葉にとどまることができるでしょうか。
御言葉を知らなければ、どうやって御言葉を祈ることができるでしょうか。
「神の御言葉を知らなければ、神の御心を知ることもできない。」という言葉があります。
皆さんには、神様の御言葉を取り入れる計画があるでしょうか。
聖書通読プランは律法的だと言う人もいます。
でもイエス様は神様の言葉を食べ物にたとえられました。
毎日の食事の計画を立てることは律法的でしょうか。
聖書を読み始めたばかりとか、体系的な聖書を読む習慣がないという方に、
シンプルな提案があります。「1/1/10 聖書プラン」です。
1日に1章読む。1節思いめぐらす。10分祈る。
後ろのテーブルに案内がありますので、ぜひもらっていってください。
聖書全体を一気に読もうとするのではなく、重要な7つの書から始めます。
1日1章ずつ、聖書の書物を最初から最後まで読み進めていきます。
ランダムな聖句だけを読むことには限界があります。
たとえば私がいつもハリー・ポッターのセリフばかり引用していたとします。
「ハリー、お前は魔法使いだ」「ドビーは自由な妖精です」
皆さんは「なるほど、映画を見たんですね。」と言うと思います。
すると私が、「いや、一度も見たことないよ。」と言ったらどう思いますか。
実は、多くのクリスチャンが聖書に対して同じことをしています。
聖句は知っている。でも、聖書全体の物語は知らないのです。
多くの人は聖書を読んでも何も得られないと言います。
目で文字を追っただけで、
15分後には何を読んだかよくわからない。
考えてみて欲しいのですが、ティーバッグをお湯に10秒だけ浸したら、どんな味になるでしょうか。
3分間浸したらどうでしょうか。
聖書に思いをめぐらせることは、ティーバッグをしっかり蒸らすことに似ています。
心に残った一節を選んでみてください。
そして数分間、その御言葉についてよく考えてみてください。
書き出してみる。
声に出して読んでみる。
別の翻訳で読んでみる。
そして、その御言葉に基づいて10分間祈ってみてください。
神様が御言葉によって語られたのなら、私たちは祈りによって応答していきましょう。
私がこれまで経験した中で、最も鮮明に神様の臨在を感じた時――
まるでイエス様がすぐ隣に立っておられるように感じた時――
そのほとんどは、聖書を読み、思いを巡らし、祈っていた時でした。
ただし、ここには一つ危険があります。
聖書を読むことや祈ることの目的は、「自分はとても規律正しい人だ」と思うことではありません。
目的は、イエス様にとどまり、実を結ぶことです。
その実とは、イエス様の命令を守っていくことです。
9 父がわたしを愛されたように、わたしもあなたがたを愛しました。わたしの愛にとどまりなさい。10わたしがわたしの父の戒めを守って、父の愛にとどまっているのと同じように、あなたがたもわたしの戒めを守るなら、わたしの愛にとどまっているのです。11 わたしの喜びがあなたがたのうちにあり、あなたがたが喜びで満ちあふれるようになるために、わたしはこれらのことをあなたがたに話しました。
イエス様は戒めを守りなさいと言われます。そうすれば、あなたがたが喜びで満ちあふれるようになると。
カレーを箸で食べている人を想像してみてください。
なかなか口まで運べず苦労しています。
そこであなたがスプーンを渡したとします。
するとその人が、「そんなルールを押し付けないでよ。」と言ったらどうでしょう。
あなたはこう思うはずです。「いや、ただもっとおいしく食べられるようにしたいだけなんだけど。」
神様の戒めは、意味のないルールではありません。
神様の戒めは、私たちが喜びで満ちあふれるようになるために与えられているのです。
そしてイエス様に従うとき、私たちは本来生きるべきであった人生を生きることになります。
ヨハネ15章で特に強調されている戒めの一つは、イエス様の民を愛することです。
12わたしがあなたがたを愛したように、あなたがたも互いに愛し合うこと、これがわたしの戒めです。13 人が自分の友のためにいのちを捨てること、これよりも大きな愛はだれも持っていません。
実のところ、ヨハネの福音書において中心となる命令は二つしかありません。
イエス様を信じること。
ほかのクリスチャンを愛すること。
１ヨハネの手紙第一3章23節は、このように要約しています。23 私たちが御子イエス・キリストの名を信じ、キリストが命じられたとおりに互いに愛し合うこと、それが神の命令です。
この命令は、シンプルだけど美しいクリスチャン生活の要約ではないでしょうか。
皆さんはたくさんのクリスチャンとしての活動をしているかもしれません。
教会で奉仕したり、ミニストリーの働きに携わっているかもしれません。
しかし、本当の霊的な健全さは、この二つの質問によって測られます。
あなたのイエス様への信頼は深まっているでしょうか。
あなたのクリスチャンの仲間たちへの愛は成長しているでしょうか。

神様は、あるぶどう園に計り知れない価値のある投資をされました。
16節でイエス様は語られます。16 あなたがたがわたしを選んだのではなく、わたしがあなたがたを選び、あなたがたを任命しました。それは、あなたがたが行って実を結び、その実が残るようになるため、また、あなたがたがわたしの名によって父に求めるものをすべて、父が与えてくださるようになるためです。
クリスチャンの皆さん、神様は、私たちに何の実もなく、何一つ魅力的なものがなかった時から、私たちを選んでくださいました。
”神様はこう語られました。「わたしはこの人たちのために、わたしの御子のいのちを与えよう。彼らの罪のために、御子の血は十字架で流されるのだ。」
そして神様は、その犠牲が必ず実を結ぶようにされるお方です。
イエス・キリストが死なれたのは、私たちが天国に行くまでできるだけ快適に暮らせるようするためではありません。
私たちが天国に辿り着くその時まで、できるだけ多くの豊かな実を結べるようにと死なれたのです。
では、神様は私たちの人生からどのようなワインを造ろうとしておられるのでしょうか。
私には分かりません。
それは痛みを伴うものかもしれません。
時間もかかるでしょう。
しかし、まことのぶどうの木であるイエス様につながり続けていきましょう。
神様の御言葉に、また神の民の交わりの中にとどまり続けていきましょう。
そして忍耐して、神様が働かれるのを待ち望み続けていきたいと思います。
5 わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人にとどまっているなら、その人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないのです。

My wife was born in Sonoma County, in Northern California.
Sonoma County makes some of the world’s best wine.
My mother-in-law actually works for a winery.
And from what I’ve learned, wine-making is an extremely hard industry to get into.
A vineyard is a massive investment.
You find a patch of rocky, dry soil.
You invest millions upon millions into buying the land and cultivating it.
And then… you wait.
You should expect to wait 3 to 5 years before you can taste the first wine from your vineyard.
Investors would rightly ask a wine entrepreneur… “so what’s your plan for a fruitful vineyard?”
In John 15, Jesus says God is like a vineyard owner.
Only the vineyard is his people, the church.。
God has invested a ton of resources into his people and their growth.
Which brings us to today’s main point.
God is passionately invested in the fruitfulness of his chosen people in Christ.
So what’s God’s plan for his people to bear fruit?
John 15 says… abiding in Jesus.
So let’s consider…
What does it mean to abide in Jesus?
And, then let's get practical…what does it look like to abide in Jesus?
First.. what does it mean to abide in Jesus (v1-6, 8)?
v1, Jesus says…1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
By fruit, Jesus means good works that glorify God and further his kingdom.
Fruit is obedience, love, prayer, joy, and bearing witness to Jesus.
There’s two types of branches in God’s vineyard, v2…
Branches that bear fruit.
And branches that don’t.
These two types of branches represent people connected outwardly to Christ and his church.
Both identify as Christians.
Both fellowship with a visible church.
God, the Divine Vinedresser, deals with the two kinds of branches differently.
v2, Every branch in me that does not bear fruithe takes away…
No fruit… no life.
A plant’s life is not caused by its fruit.
But a plant that has life… bears fruit.
Likewise, a person with eternal life…bears fruit.
Without a changed life… there is no salvation.
Faith alone in Jesus causes salvation.
But if your life hasn’t changed… you have no reason to believe you’re saved.
As Martin Luther put it… “we are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.”
That is, real faith always bears fruit.
Which is why Jesus says in v8…
8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
And so God takes away… the unfruitful branches.
This refers to when people walk away from Christ and the church.
Just the other week, I learned that an elder at the church I was baptized walked away from Jesus…
He had a huge impact on my wife and I… and we pray he comes back to the Lord.
But even when people walk away from the faith… the Divine Vinedresser is at work.
1 John 2:19 says…19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
“But they sincerely prayed to receive Christ… so they’re still good right?!”
No… you must endure to the end to be saved.
Which is why Jesus says, v6…6 If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
Just like dead branches are used as firewood, the spiritually dead will be thrown into the eternal fire.

Fruitful branches are not exempt from pain…v2.
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
The other week William from our staff was over our house.
The tomato plant on our porch had grown into a huge plant… just branches everywhere.
But William said the plant being big wasn’t a sign of health.
The unfruitful branches were sucking the life out of the fruitful branches.
So he advised some drastic pruning…
You have to take 1/3rd of the branches away.
We were like “dude…are you sure?”
But… he was right!
Why did that person walk away from Jesus?
God takes away every branch that does not bear fruit.
He takes away false believers who lead people into sin… cause division… and promote false teaching.
Why are you suffering so much right now?
Could it be… you’re a branch that does bear fruit?
…and so God is pruning you, so you may bear more fruit.
What makes certain places, like Northern California, good for wine production?
With less water and dry conditions, the grapevines struggle to survive.
But that struggle produces world-class wine.
God has planted some of you in rocky soil…
You have financial stresses.
You have health problems.
Or you’re just tired of being single, tired of being lonely…
If you’re in Christ… God is not punishing you!
All the punishment for your sins fell on Jesus 2,000 years ago.
You’re experiencing God’s Fatherly discipline.
Hebrews 12:10 says that God “disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.”
God wants to make fine wine out of you…
…that is, holiness and Christ-likeness.
The Divine Vinedresser will see to it that you have enough water, soil, and sunlight.
God will arrange your life circumstances, so you can bear fruit.
In love, he will cut away whatever hinders fruit.
Because God is far more committed to your holiness…than your comfort.
Deep down, I used to think…“If I’m a faithful Christian, there’s a limit to how bad my life can go.
But that’s not true!
God is committed to your ultimate, eternal good.
But that good is not always what we would choose for ourselves.
But we can trust that because our lives are in God’s hands, we’re secure…v3.
Jesus says…3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
Prune and clean in verses 2 and 3 have the same root word in the original Greek.
v2, we’re being pruned or cleaned καθαίρω kathairō…
v3, we’re already clean καθαρός katharos…
In Christ…you’re already clean because of the word Jesus has spoken.
Jesus says in John 5:24…Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.
When you repent and turn to Jesus, you’re cleansed from sin once and for all.
Past, present, and future sins are wiped away.
But you need ongoing cleansing.
You must repent and turn to Jesus every day.
But that raises a question.
If Christians must keep abiding and repenting, what about Jesus' promise in John 10 that his disciples will never perish? [John 10:28]
We abide in Jesus, we actively continue to fight sin.
And Jesus protects us actively.
1 John 5:18 says…18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God [that’s Jesus!] protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
Why did you wake up still a Christian this morning? Because every moment, God chooses to sustain you.
God uses church gatherings, sermons, the Lord’s Supper, the Bible, prayer, suffering…anything and everything to keep you following Jesus.
So you don’t have to be anxious about bearing fruit, or falling away.
Like “oh no what if I don’t produce!”
No, God is deeply invested in your fruitfulness.
I had a hard time getting my first job out of college.
I was getting nervous and heard about a company called Total Quality Logistics.
They hire pretty much anyone.
But 80% of people are gone in six months.
Some people get fired their first day.
The job is high pressure sales…tons of cold calls.
As soon as you don’t produce…you’re out!
Following Jesus is not a high-pressure sales job.
Jesus is not an impatient, angry boss who’s like… "WHERE'S THE FRUIT!”
Jesus is committed to you and your fruitfulness.
That’s why Jesus says in v4…
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches.
Listen to this next part…
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do… [anything].
Wait that’s not what it says…apart from me you can do [something]
Still not right… guys help me finish it… apart from me you can do…nothing!……
Trying to do anything of spiritual value without Jesus…
…trying to bear fruit without faith…
…would be like going to the store, buying tomatoes… and then stapling them to my tomato plant.
No…the power to follow God’s commands doesn’t come from us.
A boy asks his mom… “what do you want for your birthday?
She says “A scented candle would be nice!”
“How much is that?”
“1000 yen…”
“Oh ok……hey mom by the way do you have 1000 yen?”
We are like that boy who wants to buy a present but has no money.
But grace enables obedience.

Abiding in Jesus is letting the life of Jesus the true vine flow through us, until we bear fruit.
So how do we make sure we’re getting life from the vine?
Lets get practical, super concrete…like tomorrow what should you do?
What does it look like to abide in Jesus (v8-16)?
One way…is praying Jesus’ words.
v7, Jesus says, 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Ask whatever you wish…it will be done for you…wow.
But gotta look at the fine print…
…there’s two conditions for answered prayer.
If you abide in Jesus…
And if Jesus words abide in you…
Unanswered prayer is really hard.
There’s all kinds of reasons why prayer might not be answered.
But one reason could be… you aren’t praying for things God wants, things he’s revealed in his Word.
We need to abide in the Word.
We need to pray the Word.
But how can you abide in the word if you don’t read the word?
How can you pray the word if you don’t know the word?
As it's been said, “if you are ignorant of God's Word, you will always be ignorant of God's will.”
So… do you have a plan to intake God’s word?
People say Bible reading plans are legalistic…
But Jesus compares the Word of God to food.
Is it legalistic to make a plan to eat everyday?
If you’re new to the Bible, or you don’t have any structured Bible reading plan…
I have a simple idea for you… the 1/1/10 Bible Plan.
Read 1 chapter a day. Meditate on 1 verse. Pray for 10 minutes.
You can get a copy on the welcome table in the back.
Instead of trying to read the entire Bible… start with 7 key books.
Read a chapter a day, working through entire books of the Bible.
There’s a limit to how helpful random Bible verses can be.
Imagine I was always quoting Harry Potter…
“Yer a wizard, Harry”, “Dobby is a free elf.”
You'd say, “Oh, so you've seen the movies?”
“Never seen them.”
That's what many Christians do with the Bible.
You may know Bible verses, but do you know the Bible’s story?
So often people don’t get anything out of Bible reading.
Like your eyes just run over the page.
And 15 minutes later they can't tell you what they read.
Listen… if you put a tea bag in hot water for 10 seconds…how is that tea gonna taste?
But what about if you put it in for 3 minutes?
Meditating on Scripture is like letting the tea bag properly steep.
Pick one verse that stands out to you.
And deliberately think about it for a couple minutes.
Write it out.
Say it out loud.
Look it up in a different translation.
Then, based on that…pray for ten minutes.
God has spoken by his Word, respond to him in prayer.
When I think about my clearest experiences of God’s presence…
…like times when it felt like Jesus was standing right next to me.
Almost all of them have been from reading, meditating, and praying Scripture.
Now as I say this… there’s a danger.
The goal of Bible reading and prayer is not being really disciplined.
The goal is abiding in Jesus and bearing fruit.
The fruit of… keeping Jesus’ commands.
9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
Jesus says obey my commands… that your joy may be full.
Imagine someone's eating curry with chopsticks.
They're struggling to get the curry into their mouth.
So you hand them a spoon.
But they say, "Don't tell me what to do with all your rules."
You’d be like “I’m just trying to help you enjoy your food!”
God's commands are not random rules.
God’s commands are so our joy may be full.
And when you obey Jesus, you live life the way it's supposed to be lived.
One specific command highlighted in John 15 is…loving Jesus’ people.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
You see, there’s really only two commands in the Gospel of John.
Believe in Jesus.
Love other Christians.
As 1 John 3:23 summarizes… 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
What a beautifully simple summary of being a Christian.
You may be doing a lot of Christian activities.
You might be serving at church, and even working in ministry.
But true spiritual health is measured by these two questions…
Is your trust in Jesus deepening?
Is your love for Christians growing?

God has made an infinitely valuable investment in a certain vineyard.
Jesus says, v16: 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
Christian, God chose you, before you had any fruit… anything appealing.
God said “I will invest the life of my Son, his blood will be shed on the cross for their sins.”
And God will see to it that he gets a return on his investment.
Jesus Christ did not die for you to make your life as comfortable as possible until heaven.
No… Jesus died to make your life as fruitful as possible until heaven.
So what kind of wine does the Father want to make from your life?
I don’t know.
It might be painful.
It will take time.
But remain attached to Jesus, the true vine.
Keep going to God’s Word… keep going to God’s people.
Then, be patient…and watch God do his work.
