イエス様にとって一番大切なこと | What Matters Most to Jesus ヨハネの福音書17章 John 17

その人がどのように祈るかを見ると、その人の霊的な歩みがよく分かります。
「祈ってください」と人にお願いすると、本当にいろいろな答えが返ってくると思います。
お金や快適な生活、幸せを祈る人もいれば、
自分の罪を告白し、神様を礼拝する祈りをする人もいます。
祈りで、その人が何を大切にしているかが分かるのです。
ヨハネ17章のイエス様の祈りからも、イエス様が何を1番大切にしておられるかがわかります。
この祈りは、ヨハネ13章から16章まで続いた、イエス様の最後の説教の締めくくりとして語られました。
牧師が説教の最後に祈るようなものだと考えると分かりやすいと思います。
ヨハネ17章の祈りは、「大祭司の祈り」と呼ばれています。
旧約聖書では、大祭司の務めの一つは、神の民のために祈ることでした。
大祭司というのは、神と人との間に立つために任命された役割で、イスラエル人の血を引いた人間でなければなりませんでした。
イエス様は、神ご自身であり、同時にイスラエル人としてこの世に来られたお方であり、このイエス様こそ、私たちの偉大な大祭司です。
イエス様は十字架の上で死なれ、よみがえり、そして天に昇られました。
そして今も天で、よみがえられたキリストは、ご自分の民のために絶えず祈り続けておられます。
スコットランドの牧師、ロバート・マレー・マクチェインは、こんな言葉を残しています。
「もし隣の部屋でキリストが私のために祈っておられるのが聞こえるなら、たとえ百万の敵がいても恐れないだろう。しかし、実際距離は関係ないのだ。イエスは今も私のために祈っておられる。」
ヨハネ17章では、そのイエス様の祈りを、私たちも聞くことができます。
宇宙一、力あるお方が、あなたの人生で最も大切なことについて祈っておられるのです。
この事実を知っていることは私たちに大きな慰めを与えてくれます。
たとえあなたが祈ることを忘れてしまう時も、
集中できず、力強い祈りができないと感じる時でさえも、
イエス様はあなたのために祈っていてくださいます。
しかし、このイエス様の祈りは、何を祈るべきなのかも教えてくれます。
祈りについて実践的なポイントをお話しすることもできますが、
説明を聞くより、実際に祈ることで、一番よく学ぶことができます。
なので、今日はそれぞれのポイントの終わりに、「共に祈りましょう。」とお声がけします。
イエス様の祈りに基づいて、共に短く祈る時間を持ちたいと思います。
イエス様にとって最も大切なことは何だったのでしょうか。
イエス様は何を祈られたのでしょうか？
今日は、五つ見ていきます。
祈り①：ご自身が栄光を受けること（1〜5節）
1節... 1 これらのことを話してから、イエスは目を天に向けて言われた。「父よ、時が来ました。子があなたの栄光を現すために、子の栄光を現してください。
イエス様は、ご自身が栄光を受けるように祈られました。
「何か祈ってほしいことはありますか？」と誰かに尋ねたとします。
すると「うーん、そうですね…。私の名があがめられるように祈ってください。」と答えが返ってきたらどう思うでしょうか。
きっと、「この人はずいぶん高慢だな」とか、ひどい場合には、「ちょっとこの人大丈夫かな…」と思うかもしれません。
中には、イエス様を単なる立派な道徳教師として理解したい人もいます。
しかし問題は、イエス様ご自身が実際に教えられた内容です。
というのも、イエス様の教えは非常にご自身を中心としたものだからです。イエス様は、すべては自分との関係にかかっていると教えられました。
なぜならイエス様は、ご自分を単なる優れた教師ではなく、神ご自身であると理解しておられたからです。
わたしは、わたしの栄光をほかの者に、...与えはしない。」
神様だけが唯一まことの神であることを、イエス様自身も認めておられます。
それなのにイエス様は、ご自分も神とともに栄光を受けるべきだとおっしゃるのです。
またヨハネ5章で、イエス様はすべての人が、父を敬うのと同じように、子を敬うようになることを願っておられると語られました。
では、これら全てをどうまとめて理解すればいいのでしょうか。
クリスチャンは三位一体という教えを信じています。
つまり、イエス様は子なる神であり、父なる神、そして聖霊なる神と同じ神としての本質を持っておられるお方という教義です。
私たちは、人間が栄光を受けるべきではないことを知っています。
誰かがアイドルにのめり込みすぎているのを見ると、「ちょっと行き過ぎじゃないかな」とちょっと歯痒い気持ちになる人もいたり、
また、独裁者やカルトの教祖が、自分を崇拝する集団を作り上げるのを見ると、私たちは危険なものだと感じます。
なぜなら、罪ある人間を人生の中心に置くことは、人生を壊してしまうからです。
しかし、罪のない神であり人であるイエス・キリストを人生の中心に置くなら、そこには本当のいのちがあります。
イエス様の栄光は、私たちにとって良いものです。
2 あなたは子 （イエス）に、すべての人を支配する権威を下さいました。それは、あなたが下さったすべての人に、子が永遠のいのちを与えるためです。3 永遠のいのちとは、唯一のまことの神であるあなたと、あなたが遣わされたイエス・キリストを知ることです。 4 わたしが行うようにと、あなたが与えてくださったわざを成し遂げて、わたしは地上であなたの栄光を現しました。5 父よ、今、あなたご自身が御前でわたしの栄光を現してください。世界が始まる前に一緒に持っていたあの栄光を。
5節を見ると、世界が始まる前、つまり時間というものが存在する前から、神様だけが存在していたと分かります。
神様は人間を創造される前から、私たちが罪に堕ちることをご存じでした。
それでも神様はその愛のゆえに、この世の中からご自分の民を選び、救おうと決められたのです。
そして2節にあるように、神様は、その人々をイエス様にお与えになりました。
だからイエス様は、失われた者を捜し、救うために天から来られたのです。
『９６時間』という映画では、リーアム・ニーソンが演じる元CIA捜査官の主人公が登場します。
その映画では彼の愛する娘が誘拐されてしまうのですが、
主人公は犯人に向かって、このように言います。
身代金が目的なら言っておく。私には金はない。でも私には特別な能力がある。その能力は、お前たちのような人間にとって悪夢になる。今すぐ娘を返せばそれで終わりだ。しかし返さないなら、お前を捜し出し、必ず見つけ出し、そしてお前を殺す。
イエス様が愛しておられる人々も、サタンに欺かれ、
罪に陥ってしまいました。
しかしイエス様にも、罪と悪魔にとって「悪夢」となる、特別な能力があります。
そしてイエス様は、イエス様を信じるすべての人に永遠のいのちを与えるために来られたのです。
3節：永遠のいのちとは、唯一のまことの神であるあなたと、あなたが遣わされたイエス・キリストを知ることです。
クリスチャンではない皆さん、永遠のいのちとは、ただ終わりなく生き続けることではありません。
時間の長さだけではなく、人生の質のことです。
永遠のいのちとは、永遠なる神様を知ることです。
イエス・キリストには、すべての人を支配する権威があり、あなたに永遠のいのちを与える権威があります。
そしてイエス様は、父なる神から行うようにと託された救いの御業を、すでに成し遂げてくださいました。
ですから、あなたに託されていることは、信じることだけなのです。
イエス様、あなたには永遠のいのちを与える権威があります。
祈り②：神様の恵みの証しを喜び祝うこと（6〜10節）
6節...6あなたが世から選び出して与えてくださった人たちに、わたしはあなたの御名を現しました。彼らはあなたのものでしたが、あなたはわたしに委ねてくださいました。そして彼らはあなたのみことばを守りました。7 あなたがわたしに下さったものはすべて、あなたから出ていることを、今彼らは知っています。8 あなたがわたしに下さったみことばを、わたしが彼らに与えたからです。彼らはそれを受け入れ、わたしがあなたのもとから出て来たことを本当に知り、あなたがわたしを遣わされたことを信じました。9 わたしは彼らのためにお願いします。世のためにではなく、あなたがわたしに下さった人たちのためにお願いします。彼らはあなたのものですから。10 わたしのものはすべてあなたのもの、あなたのものはわたしのものです。わたしは彼らによって栄光を受けました。
子どもの頃、父が誰かに私のことを自慢しているのを、たまたま耳にしたことがありました。
父は「こんなに私のことを誇りに思ってくれていたんだ」と驚いたのを覚えています。
イエス様も、父なる神に向かって弟子たちのことを誇らしく語られます。
7節では、7あなたがわたしに下さったものはすべて、あなたから出ていることを、今彼らは知っています。
8節では、彼らは…わたしがあなたのもとから出て来たことを本当に知り、あなたがわたしを遣わされたことを信じました。
これはブルーノマーズとは違います。
「ありのままの君がただただ素晴らしいよ」というような励ましではありません。
イエス様が喜び祝っておられるのは、神様の恵みが弟子たちのうちに働いていることです。
主よ、私のうちにある良いものは、すべてあなたからのものです。残りはすべて私の責任です。
イエス様は弟子たちを見るとき、欠点ではなく、彼らの信仰をご覧になります。
これはヨハネの福音書全体の目的にもつながっています。
…イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなたがたが信じるためであり、また信じて、イエスの名によっていのちを得るためである。
実はこの時点で、弟子たちはあと数時間もすれば、イエス様を見捨て、裏切ることになります。
それでもイエス様は、弱く、欠けだらけの弟子たちを見て、10節で「わたしは彼らによって栄光を受けました」と言われます。
クリスチャンの皆さん、あなたは自分自身をこのように見ているでしょうか。
あるクリスチャンはこう言いました。「私は、あるべき姿にはまだなっていません。しかし神に感謝します。私はもう、かつての私ではありません。」
批判することは簡単で、励ますことはより難しいものです。
ここにいる誰一人として、「励まされすぎて困る」という人はいません。
この教会の誰かのうちに、神様が働いておられる姿を、あなたは見つけることができるでしょうか。
天のお父様、私たちが、お互いのうちにあるあなたの働きをすぐに見つけ、喜ぶ教会となれますように。
そして、変えられた人生を喜ぶとき、そのすべての誉れと栄光をあなたにお返しすることができますように。
アーメン。
祈り③：他のこの世のものではない弟子たちのために（11〜19節）
14わたしは彼らにあなたのみことばを与えました。世は彼らを憎みました。わたしがこの世のものでないように、彼らもこの世のものではないからです。 15わたしがお願いすることは、あなたが彼らをこの世から取り去ることではなく、悪い者から守ってくださることです。
イエス様は、ご自分の弟子たちがこの世にいるけれども、この世のものではない者であるようにと願っておられます。
しかしクリスチャンの中には、「この世のものではない」ことに偏ってしまう人もいます。
極端な例を挙げれば、アーミッシュの人たちや修道院で暮らす修道士たちです。
一方で、「この世にいる」ということばかりを強調するクリスチャンもいます。
その人たちは、「もっと人に受け入れられるように、教えも変えていこう。」と言います。
しかし、そのような教会は、結局、自ら衰退していきます。
なぜなら、この世が相手にしない教会とは、どんな教会でしょうか？
「この世の中を勝ち取ろう。そのために、世の中とまったく同じになろう。」そんな教会です。
もしキリスト教が、「なんとなく良い人になりましょう」ということだけで、イエス・キリストが私たちの罪のために死んでくださったという福音がないのならば、
イエス様は、このどちらの極端な例も退けられます。
17節です。
17 真理によって彼らを聖別してください。あなたのみことばは真理です。
神様はクリスチャンを聖なる者として取り分け、この世から区別された者とされます。
なので、私たちがみことばを聞き、それを信じるとき、私たちは少しずつ聖く変えられていきます。
私たちが教会に集まるのは、神様のみことばによって強められるためです。
しかし、それだけではなく、それぞれの場所へと遣わされ、神様のみことばを宣べ伝えていきます。
イエス様は、父なる神から救いを成し遂げる使命を受けて、この世に遣わされました。
そして今、イエス様はご自分の民を、その救いを宣べ伝える使命を持って、この世へ遣わしておられます。
共に祈りましょう。
祈り④：三位一体のような一致のために（20〜23節）
ここまでは厳密に言えば、イエス様は11人の使徒たちのために祈っておられました。
イエス様が選ばれた使徒たちは、新約聖書を書き記し、初代教会の土台を築きました。
しかしここでイエス様は、これから先、イエス・キリストを信じるすべての人のために祈られます。
20節、 20 わたしは、ただこの人々のためだけでなく、彼らのことばによってわたしを信じる人々のためにも、お願いします。21 父よ。あなたがわたしのうちにおられ、わたしがあなたのうちにいるように、すべての人を一つにしてください。彼らもわたしたちのうちにいるようにしてください。あなたがわたしを遣わされたことを、世が信じるようになるためです。
もし、私や皆さんが「福岡のために祈ってください」と言われたら、頭に思い浮かぶのは、顔の見えない大勢の人たちかと思います。
私たちは神様ではないので、この町にいる一人ひとりを知っているわけではありません。
しかし、イエス様は神であり、この祈りをささげておられたその時、イエス様はあなたのことを思い、また一人ひとりのために祈っておられたのです。
本当にすごい事実です。
22節、父なる神と子なる神が一つであるように、クリスチャンが一つになることです。
しかし、この箇所は時に誤って用いられることがあります。
カトリック教会や正教会では、この22節を根拠に、「教会は一つの制度、一つの組織でなければならない」と主張します。
そして、彼らは「私たちこそ唯一の真の教会である」と考えます。
一方、私たちのようなプロテスタント教会は、唯一性は教会にではなく、キリストにあると信じています。
私たちが救われるのは、正しい教会に所属しているからではなく、イエス・キリストを信じているからです。
なので、クリスチャンの一致とは、組織として一つになることではありません。
また、全員が同じになることでもありません。
それでいいのです。クリスチャンの一致は、イエス・キリストについての真理を土台とした一致だからです。
このことをお話しするのは、私たちが本質ではないことに、必要以上に自分を重ねてしまう危険があるからです。
だから私は、この教会では、いつまでも次の三つのことが中心であってほしいと願っています。
罪は本当に深刻なものであること。
そして福音は、本当に良い知らせであること。
共に祈りましょう。
最後に、祈り⑤：ご自分の民が神の栄光を見ることができるように（24〜26節）
24 父よ。わたしに下さったものについてお願いします。わたしがいるところに、彼らもわたしとともにいるようにしてください。わたしの栄光を、彼らが見るためです。世界の基が据えられる前からわたしを愛されたゆえに、あなたがわたしに下さった栄光を。
私たちに１番必要なのは、イエス様とともにいることです。
私たちの１番の願いは、神様の栄光を見ることです。
けれども私たちは、その願いを間違った場所で満たそうとしてしまいます。
どれも悪いものではありません。
でも、それだけでは十分ではないのです。
私たちの目は、神様の栄光を見るためにつくられているからです。
出エジプト記で、モーセは神様に「どうか、あなたの栄光を私に見せてください。」と願いました。
しかし神様は「あなたはわたしの顔を見ることはできない。人はわたしを見て、なお生きていることはできないからである。」と言われました。
罪がある私たちは、そのままでは神様を見ることができないのです。
しかし、イエス様が十字架で私たちの罪を取り除いてくださったから、私たちの目は神様の栄光を見つめることができるのです。
イエス様を通して、私たちは神様を見ることができます。
そしていつの日か、今の限られた見え方は終わり、神様を完全に見ることができる日がやって来ます。
神様を見つめるその喜びが、永遠に私たちの魂を満ち足らせてくれるのです。
ヨハネの手紙 第一 3:2 愛する者たち、私たちは今すでに神の子どもです。やがてどのようになるのか、まだ明らかにされていません。しかし、私たちは、キリストが現れたときに、キリストに似た者になることは知っています。キリストをありのままに見るからです。
今、私たちは、信仰がキリストの言葉を聞くことによって与えられる「耳の時代」を生きています。
しかし、いつの日か、神様と顔と顔を合わせてお会いする「目の時代」が来ます。
愛する天のお父様、あなたが大切にしておられることを、私たちも大切にする者としてください。
何よりも、あなたの栄光を見ることを心から待ち望む者へと変えてください。
このすべてを、私たちの愛する主イエス・キリストの御名によってお祈りします。
You can tell a lot about a person’s spiritual life by the way they pray.
Ask someone to pray and you’ll get a variety of responses
Some would pray for money, comfort, and happiness.
Others would pray to confess sin and worship God.
Prayer reveals priorities.
In John 17, Jesus’ prayer reveals his priorities.
This prayer comes at the end of Jesus’ farewell sermon in John 13-16.
It’s kind of like how a pastor prays at the end of a sermon.
Jesus’ prayer in John 17 is called the High Priestly Prayer.
In the Old Testament, the High Priest’s role was to pray for God’s people.
The High Priest was a flesh-and-blood Israelite appointed to stand between God and man.
Jesus, God in flesh and of Israelite blood… is our Great High Priest.
Jesus died, rose, and ascended to heaven.
Now from heaven, the risen Christ continually prays for his people.
Scottish pastor Robert Murray M’Chenye once said…
“If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. Jesus is praying for me.”
In John 17… we can hear Jesus praying for us.
The most powerful person in the universe is praying about the most important things in your life.
Knowing that brings comfort.
Even when you forget to pray…
Even when your prayers feel weak and distracted…
But Jesus’ prayer also brings clarity on what to pray for.
But you learn to pray best… by actually praying.
So at the end of each point, I’ll say“pray with me.”
And we’ll briefly pray based on Jesus’ prayer.
5 things...
Prayer #1: to glorify himself (v1-5).
v1…1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you…”
Jesus prays that he would be glorified.
Imagine you ask someone…“any ways I can pray for you?”
And they’re like… “Uh…just that my name would be glorified.”
You’d conclude that person is atbest prideful… at worst, mentally ill.
Some wanna domesticate Jesus by making him just a good moral teacher.
But the only problem is… what Jesus actually taught.
You see, Jesus’ teaching is really self-centered.
Jesus taught that everything depends on your relationship with him.
Because Jesus saw himself not as just a good moral teacher… but God.
In the Old Testament, God said: I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other.
Jesus affirms that there’s only one true God…
…and yet Jesus sayshe should get glory with God.
Jesus said back in John 5 that he wants everyone to “honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.”
So like how does this all fit together?
This is why Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity.
That is…Jesus is God the Son, who shares the same divine essence with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

We all know it's wrong to glorify human beings…
We find it disturbing when a dictator or cult leader creates a cult of personality…
Because centering your life on a sinful human being… destroys your life.
But centering your life on Jesus, the sinless God-man… brings true life.
Which is why Jesus prays, v2…
2 since you have given him [Jesus] authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
Before time… v5 before the world existed… there was nothing but God.
And in eternity past, there was a covenant of redemption between God the Father and God the Son.
Before God created humanity, he knew we would fall into sin.
In love, God chose certain people out of the world… to be saved.
And as v2 says,God gave those people to Jesus.
And so Jesus was sent from heaven to seek and save the lost.
In the movie Taken, Liam Neeson plays a former CIA agent.
His beloved daughter has been kidnapped.
He says this to the kidnappers…
If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills…Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that'll be the end of it… but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.
Jesus’ beloved people have been deceived by Satan.
We’ve fallen into sin.
But Jesus has a very particular set of skills that make him a nightmare for sin and the Devil.
And Jesus is on a mission to give eternal life to all who believe.
v3: 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Non-Christian friends, eternal life is not just about unlimited time.
It's not just about quantity of life, but quality of life.
Eternal life is about knowing the God who is eternal.
Jesus Christ has authority over all flesh, he has authority to give you eternal life.
He’s already accomplished the work of salvation the Father gave him to do.
Pray with me.
Father, we pray: glorify your Son that you may be glorified.
Lord Jesus, you have authority to give eternal life.
So we ask: give eternal life to those who do not yet believe.
Prayer #2: to celebrate evidence of grace (v6-10)
v6…6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
As a kid sometimes I would overhear my dad bragging to someone else about me.
And I was like “wow, I didn’t know he was so proud of me!”
When talking to the Father, Jesus brags about his disciples…
Verse 6, 6b…they have kept your word.
Verse 7, 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
Verse 8 they …8b have come to know in truth that I came from you…8c they have believed that you sent me.
This isn’t Bruno Mars.
What Jesus celebrates is God’s grace at work in his people.
As the ancient Christian Augustine once wrote… “O Lord, everything good in me is due to you. The rest is my fault.”
Jesus sees his disciples not in terms of their faults but their faith.
This comes back to the whole purpose of John’s Gospel…
…so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Jesus’ disciples are just hours away from betraying him.
But Jesus can look at his weak and deeply flawed disciples and say in v10… “I am glorified in them.”
So Christian…do you see yourself this way?
As one Christian put it… “I am not who I should be. But, blessed be God, I am not who I once was.”
Do you see other Christians this way?
It's easy to criticize, it's harder to encourage.
No one here is in danger of being too encouraged.
How do you see God at work in another Christian at this church?
Be sure to tell them after the service today.

Father, make us a church where we’re quick to see your work in one another's lives.
And when we celebrate changed lives, may you get all the credit and glory.
Amen.
Prayer #3: For other-worldly disciples in the world (v11-19).
14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
Jesus’ wants his disciples to be in the world but not of the world.
Some Christians focus only on being not of the world…
To give extreme examples, think of the amish or a monastery.
The other extreme are Christians who focus only on being in the world…
They say “wegotta change all our doctrines so people can accept them.”
Churches like this doom themselves to extinction.
Because do you wanna know what kinda church the world ignores?

Jesus rejects both extremes…v17.
God intends to sanctify Christians… to set them apart from the world.
God’s word is truth.
So as we hear the word and believe it, we’re made more and more holy.
The church gathers to be strengthened in God’s Word…
But the church also scatters toproclaim God’s Word…
Jesus was sent by the Father on mission to accomplish salvation.
Now Jesus sends his people on mission to proclaim salvation.
Pray with me.
Father, make us a holy people who are not of the world.
But also make us a missional people, sent into the world.
Amen.
Prayer #4: for Trinity-like Unity (v20-23).
Technically up until now, Jesus has been praying for the 11 apostles.
The apostles Jesus appointed wrote the New Testament and started the Christian church.
But now, Jesus turns and prays for every Christian, ever.
v20, 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
If you or I prayed for Fukuoka, in our minds it would be a faceless group of people.
We’re not God, we don’t know every person in the city.
But Jesus is God… so if you’re a Christian, he was thinking of and praying for you specifically in this moment!
That’s so cool!!
And what does Jesus pray for?
Like… can you get more unified than the Trinity?!
Now sometimes… this verse gets weaponized.
The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches say… v22 means we gotta have one institutional church.
They say they are the One True Church.™
Protestant churches like ours, locate exclusivity not in a church, but in Christ.
Christian unity isn’t institutional unity.
Christian unity also isn’t uniformity.
Like we’re a church with many different nationalities and personalities.
No…Christian unity is based on the truth about Jesus.
I say this because there’s a danger of Christians over-identifying with things that aren't central.
So I hope these three truths will always be at the center of our church…
Sin is really bad.
God is really big.
And the gospel is really good news.
Pray with me.
Father, we lament the division among Christians in the world, even in our own city.
Father, we pray for unity, the same unity you have with your Son.
May that unity be based in the truth about Jesus.
Amen.
Lastly…Prayer #5: For his people to see God (v24-26).
24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Our deepest need is to be withJesus.
Our deepest longing is to see God’s glory.
But we look for this in all the wrong places…
A beautiful person, a new travel destination, a majestic mountain.
None of these are bad things.
But they aren’t enough.
Your eyes were made to see God.
But there’s a problem.
In the book of Exodus, Moses asked God: “Please show me your glory.”
But God said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”
Because of sin, we can’t see God.
But Jesus died on a cross to take away our sin, so our eyes can look upon God’s glory.
Through Jesus, we can see God.
Jesus says “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”
One day partial sight of God will give way to full sight.
And that vision of God will satisfy us for all eternity.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
Right now we’re in the age of the ear, where faith comes through hearing the word of Christ.
But one day, we’ll be in the age of the eye where we will see God face to face.
Let’s pray, one last time.
Heavenly Father, make your priorities our priorities.
Help us be a holy people, on mission to reach the world.
Help us be a gracious people, quick to encourage.
Help us be a united people, as you are one God in three persons.
But more than anything…help us be a people who long to see your glory.
We ask all these things in Jesus' name.
