The bull. An icon of power, progeny, and prosperity around the world.

From bull fighting in Colombia,

To bull running in Spain,

To bull raising in Sudan,

To bull wrestling in India,

To bull mythology in China,

To bull riding in America,

To the charging bull of Wall Street,

To right here at home, the divine bull of Daizifu.

There is no doubt the culture that surrounds the bull is full of exhilaration, awe, terror and sometimes downright stupidity.

And for good reason, it takes great precision and technique to interact withthis creature in a way that doesn’t get you killed.

A bull is about eight to nine times my weight and at its head stands about as tall as I do. It's easily angered and is known for being temperamental and especially difficult to get under control.

I looked up this question on Google and I was laughing at the AI answer: how do you capture a wild bull? “Capturing a wild bull requires heavy-duty infrastructure, a coordinated team, and extreme caution. Methods range from gradual baiting with feed into secure pens to active pursuits using helicopters, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and specialized bull-catching buggies equipped with hydraulic neck-catching arms.”

Helicopters, really?

The description went further to say the best way to capture it is by going to where it hangs out when its calm and can be cornered and then execute the capture.

Clearly, it’s not something to be taken lightly, and it requires a great amount of preparation because of the immense power and strength of the animal.

In today’s passage the religious rulers of the day are going with the intention to capture Jesus in a very similar way to the way one would capture a wild bull. If you remember in John 11, Jesus raised a man named Lazarus from the dead.

Lazurus was dead in a tomb and Jesus literally said, “Lazurus, come out!” And Lazurus walked out.

In verse 47 it reads, “So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”

You see, the Jewish elite have a problem. It’s a power problem. There is this man who clearly is powerful and they see there own power and prestige drifting away from them.

The Jewish leaders had an interesting place of power at the time. The Jewish nation lived under Roman rule. The Romans executed their sovereignty from Rome, but had many governors and leaders throughout their empire.

The Jewish leaders had a well crafted agreement with the Romans that was very beneficial to them. They controlled any Jewish rebellions and enjoyed freedom to practice religion as well as exercise their spiritual authority and stature over the people.

They kind of kept anything from getting out of control and got benefits from their people and their government for “keeping the peace.”

So they see Jesus’ power massively displayed in a public fashion and it becomes a threat to their own egos. But they seem to reframe their jealousy as a more logical existential political threat.

They say the people are going to follow after Jesus and start a rebellion against Rome and our existence as a nation will come to an end. So the high priest “Caiaphas” answers, “no no, you don’t understand. only one man has to die for the nation to be saved.” Which though he meant it differently, was a prophecy of Christ’s death for the world.

So from that point on, they set out to figure out a way to capture the “wild” Jesus.

They know he has great strength and commands people, nature, demons, and life itself so they’re rightfully terrified.

Their approach is to come up with a foolproof plan to capture him.

John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

So the Jewish leaders

  • bribe one of his followers, Judas, to betray him, get together a band of soldiers, along with the religious elite,

  • find out when they can corner him in a place he usually goes,

  • gear up with weapons, lanterns, and torches. (Reminds me of the angry mob scene in Beauty and the Beast.)

Their thought pattern is something like, “We’ll corner him in the garden. He won’t be able to get away and we’ll have enough men and weapons and people that he’s not gonna be able to escape or do anything crazy. Basically we’ll over power him.”

So with that setup. Let’s look at the passage and glean a few things.

1. Who’s in charge?

Look at verse 4 “Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said, “Whom do you seek?”

It’s clear when someone steps forward that they are not afraid, and it says here in the scripture that Jesus “knowing everything that was to happen” steps forward. Who’s in control? The massive crowd of captors? No chance, Jesus steps forward.

Friends, Let’s get this right. Jesus wasn’t captured outside of his will, he stepped forward, to sacrifice himself for our redemption.

Jesus also starts the conversation. “who are you looking for?” When they say Jesus the Nazarene, he replies, “I am.”

Now this seems like a very simple straightforward choice of words like “Oh, that’s me.”

But its actually a very important statement he is making. In the old testament God tells Moses that his name is “I am.”

The God who IS.

Jesus is acknowledging he is the one they’ve come for and that they’ve come for GOD.

And we immediately see the power of the statement is physically felt. maybe from shock or from just their nerves or from actual kinetic power of this statement but the scripture says everyone falls to the ground. Showing a mere gram of Jesus’ immense power that at the mention of his name people would literally fall to the ground.

He asks them again, and again, probably shaken up they answer, but this time he says, “I told you it’s me, so let these other men go. (he’s referring to his disciples that were with him).

This moment is a perfect foreshadowing of what Jesus is doing by going to the cross for us. This small statement typifies the great sacrifice of Christ. “You are looking for me, let them go.”

When Jesus chooses to give himself up for sinners its with the loving heart of God. “Take me, let them go.” (again notice, jesus is in control of the conversation.)

What do we learn from this section?

  • Jesus is all-powerful - He offers himself willingly and chooses not to fight on his own behalf. Unlike a bull that needs to be baited or captured. Jesus is completely powerful and yet completely surrendered to God‘s will.

  • Jesus is in control of your salvation. He’s in complete control of giving his life to be a sacrifice. People aren’t doing this to him. In love and obedience, He gave himself for us. When we look at our savior Jesus let’s not think for one second that for Jesus was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. No, he knew exactly what was going on and the price that he was about to pay.

How does the surrender of the all-powerful Christ affect your trust in Him?

2. Our desire to help –

“Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)”

‭‭John‬ ‭18‬:‭10‬

Naturally, when we see injustice, or our friends in trouble we want to help. We want to save them, or come to their aide.

Simon in true-form whips out his katana and hacks off the priest’s servant ear. I don’t know if he had bad aim and missed a neck shot … but this is the first outwardly aggressive act we see in the passage. It is to be noted that this particular moment is catalogued in each of the gospel accounts so it must have been quite a scene.

Sometimes when we think things aren’t going our way, or how we thought they should go, or even what we believe God would want for a situation. We act out of misguided zeal, aggression and impulse. We think, “I need to step in to control this situation that is clearly out of control.”

When we act impulsively even in righteous zeal we are answering the question “who’s in charge” with our own “I AM.” – the end of this thinking and action is ruin. A few verses later Simon Peter goes on to reject even knowing Christ. It’s because this kind of impulsive religious zeal isn’t about Jesus, it's about us. And this is not the way of the cross.

How many times have we rushed into action thinking that we are serving God?

Thinking that we are doing the right thing?

We say, “I’m in charge now, I can get this done?”

This is the natural way of humans. We would like to be able to do things ourselves. Be self-made. Not rely on anyone else for help or salvation. When someone helps us we may feel the weight of returning the help.

But this is not the way of God. There is no way that we can step into the saving process to help. It had to be done completely by a sinless all-powerful savior.

How will you step aside and allows Christs salvation to encourage you in your daily life?

Our last point this morning is:

3. The perfect sacrifice

So what is the way of salvation if we can’t offer anything in it?

Verse 11 “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

The way of salvation was supreme humility. Complete power, complete humility

In Philippians 2: “...Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

This is why Jesus is known as the lamb of God because of his humility and willingness and innocence in going to the cross in submitting to his father‘s Will.

But at the same time I’d like to show the parallel between Jesus and a different sacrificial animal in the Old Testament

Let’s look at Exodus 29

10 “Then you shall bring the bull before the tent of meeting. Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull. 11 Then you shall kill the bull before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting, 12 and shall take part of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger, and the rest of the blood you shall pour out at the base of the altar. 13 And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. 14 But the flesh of the bull and its skin and its dung you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.

As you can imagine from what we talked about before about bulls, this offering for sin was the most expensive, most demonstrative, and logistically challenging offering we read about. In Ancient times, If you owned a bull, you could expand your herd by having more cows, you could grow your wealth and develop industry.

The sacrifice here in Exodus, requires a spotless bull be brought from the herd, and the priests were to put their hands on the bulls head.

I don’t even know the logistics of how that would work, but imagine this bull being tied up and brought in; this huge, powerful beast, being subdued somehow and all the priests coming up to it, putting their hands on its head and killing it.

Showing the cost and the severity of even unintentional sin, and it was to be sacrificed for the sin of the priests and the people.

This sin offering was to be fully burned up. The blood drained and used to purify the altar, the internal fat and organs were to be burned on the altar, and the flesh and  skin and excrement were to be burned outside the camp. No piece of the offering could be left over or manipulated by any human. The idea was that offering for sin had one sole purpose, to cleanse sin. And it was costly.

This powerful expensive beast was offered for the sins of the priests and the people.

Isn’t that our savior? All-powerful, all-valuable, without blemish or sin, impossible to capture yet he’s being sacrificed completely for our sins and no one could add to that for some personal gain.

No power of man could help him sacrifice but also no one could actually capture him.

Jesus goes beyond the bull sacrifice in that he laid all his power down. The only way for him to sacrifice was if he gave himself up.

What we read here in John is not a helpless lamb being manipulated and captured, but an all-powerful savior stepping forward to pay the cost of our sin.

Our rebellion against God could not be remedied by our effort or participation. Jesus had to go alone to the cross to pay our debt.

If you are a follower of Christ today, how are you surrendering yourself to God’s will and saving power in your life?

  • this may look like praying for God’s will in the morning

  • But it could also be giving yourself time before making a rash decision to save yourself from a difficulty you are going through

Where do you believe you don’t need God’s help, where are you saying, “I’ll take it from here.”?

  • Are we willing to give our problems to Christ before trying to solve them ourselves?

If you are not yet a follower of Jesus, how does the all-powerful savior submitting himself for you affect your heart?

  • Will you ask God to save you from your sin realizing Christ has already done all the work for your salvation?

Let’s pray.

イエス様にとって一番大切なこと | What Matters Most to Jesus ヨハネの福音書17章 John 17
