(See English below)
John 18:38, 19:4, and 19:6.
*****
Ten years ago, a company offered one of its employees a choice.
Back then, each Bitcoin was only worth about ¥2000 yen.
So the guy said… “Why would I want Bitcoin? I’ll take the vacation!”
Today, each Bitcoin is worth 10 million yen, or $60,000 USD.
Which means this man chose a vacation over ¥1 billion yen…$6 million USD.
If only he had seen the signs of what Bitcoin would become.
Like Bitcoin, Jesus is an underdog in John 18-19.
He’s condemned to be crucified.
Almost all his friends have abandoned him.
No one wants to invest in Jesus…
No one expects Jesus to amount to anything…
Like “surely the cross will be the end of this Christianity thing… right?!”
And yet… the signs of Jesus’ future victory are all over this passage.
Here’s today’s main point.
The cross began a great reversal in which King Jesus and all who trust in him will be vindicated.
A day is coming when Jesus will judge the world.
On that day, the only thing that will matter is whether or not you’re on Jesus’ side.
Which is why I wanna convince you to invest in Jesus now.
To do that, let's consider: three reversals of the cross.
Reversal #1: Jesus is a King, but not of this world (18:33-38a).
A quick recap from last week.
Jesus has been betrayed and arrested, and the Jewish leaders want him dead.
But because Judea is under Roman rule, only Rome can authorize an execution.
So they bring Jesus before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor.
Here’s what happens next… John 18:33.
33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”
Pilate’s job as governor is to keep the peace.
People have been calling Jesus a King…which sounds like rebellion!
But Jesus gives Pilate the reassurance he looks for… John 18:36.
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
Essentially… “yes, I’m a King… but not in a way that threatens Rome.”
Jesus never advocated violence or rebellion.
In fact, Jesus rebuked any of his followers who resorted to violence.
I was an international relations major in college.
I remember being surprised by this definition of what a country is.
A nation-state is a political community that has authority to use physical force within its borders.
So how is Jesus a King if his reign has nothing to do with physical force?
How does a kingdom from another world advance in thisworld?
The triumph of gospel truth.
As people accept the truth about Jesus, the kingdom of God spreads.
Jesus wants the gospel to be spread by the Word, not the sword.
And for the first 350 years of church history, it did spread this way.
The gospel of Jesus turned the world upside down not by coercion but by persuasion.
All this changed in 380 AD when Christianity became the state religion of the Roman empire.
This change marked the beginning of 1,000 years of the church's spiritual decline until the Protestant Reformation.
As one Christian theologian put it…
“Whenever the church has benefited from the privileges and patronages of Caesar it has become corrupt. But any time the church has had to rely solely on the Lord Jesus and his means of grace it has prospered.”
I say this because some well-meaning Christians think the goal is political and cultural power.
But when church and state mix… there’s so many problems.
When you let the church run the state, you get the Crusades.
When you let the state run the church, you get the Chinese Community Party editing the Bible.
A worldly Christian kingdom is not the goal.
That would be to turn back the clock.
Old Testament Israel was a worldly kingdom of one nation.
But the New Testament church is a heavenly kingdom of all nations.
So when the church makes worldly political power its goal, it's like trading in a new Toyota for a horse and carriage.
God’s kingdom was set up 2,000 years ago through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
And if you believe… God will transfer you from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
***
Sadly, Pilate did not accept the truth about Jesus, v37.
37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
Jesus is making a subtle invitation to Pilate.
He’s saying “I can tell you the truth, a truth that will set you free. Be like my sheep who listen to my voice and have eternal life.”
But Pilate declines, v38.
38a Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews…
“What is truth?” is a dismissive question expressing frustration…
He doesn’t really want an answer, so he walks away.
Modern people like Pilate tend to say…
“You Christians, you religious people make a big deal about words, and names, and superstitions…”
“But who can really know what’s true?”
There’s this idea that if you stay neutral towards spiritual questions you’re safe….
But you know… Pilate tried really hard to stay neutral towards Jesus…
He didn’t wanna get wrapped up in debates about truth.
He didn’t want to crucify Jesus.
But through his passivity and cowardice he ends up being complicit in the death of Jesus.
Jesus does not not let Pilate choose neutrality and he won’t let you do that either.
There’s no middle ground…you must either crucify Jesus or worship him.
***
Jesus is building an invisible kingdom of people who submit to his truth.
That’s not naturally attractive to the powerful and comfortable.
Which is why Pilate rejects Jesus.
But ironically, Pilate’s rejection of Jesus is used by God in his plan to save sinners…which brings us to our second point.
Reversal #2: Jesus is innocent, but declared guilty (18:38b-19:16a).
So far, this has been a private dialogue between Jesus and Pilate.
But now Pilate walks outside his headquarters to address the crowds, v38.
38b After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Barabbas was a robber, which can be translated as an insurrectionist.
Now, if you’re Pilate, this is the kinda guy who should be punished.
Barabbas was a Jewish zealot who rebelled against Rome and killed people.
Jesus was a Jewish rabbi who never rebelled against Rome and healed people.
Three times Pilate declares Jesus innocent…John 18:38, 19:4, and 19:6.
But ironically… Barabbas was released and Jesus was not.
Kill people and rebel?
You get life.
Heal people and serve?
You get death.
The innocent judged guilty.
The guilty walks free.
If that sounds wrong… you’re starting to understand the cross.
Because…don’t you see who Barrabasreally is?
Barabbas is you… he’s me.
Like Barabbas rebelled against Rome… we’ve rebelled against God.
And like Barabbas, we’ve been rightfully condemned to die for our rebellion.
Picture yourself like Barbabas, standing before the crowds..
You’re condemned to die… but Jesus goes to cross instead of you.
We have no reason to believe Barabbas was grateful when this happened, like “I owe you everything… you set me free.”
Likewise, even when you had zero concern for God or his ways…Christ went to the cross instead of you.
Romans 5:8 says: 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Think of the worst thing you’ve ever done, thought, or said.
Something that if we played it back on this screen… you’d die from shame.
At that moment, at your worst, proud and self-assured in your sin…Jesus died so you could be set free.
Jesus, the innocent, was judged guilty, so you, the guilty, can walk free.
Understanding this…changes how your heart receives this next passage, John 19:1.
19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”
I’m amazed by the self-control of Jesus here.
The human hand is a marvel of engineering.
And yet Jesus, the very one who designed the hand lets himself be smacked in the face by it.
These verses are dripping with irony.
The purple robe and the crown of thorns are royal symbols.
These men are unknowingly acting out what will happen on the day when every knee bows before Jesus Christ.
You see, for Jesus, the cross is not defeat.
The cross is a throne.
***
Pilate tried to appease the crowds with mockery…like “look, he’s ridiculous, not dangerous.”
But it's not enough… v6.
6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”
21st century people, who’ve barely read the Bible, think of Jesus as an ancient version of John Lennon.
As if Jesus is just a hippie whose core message is, “whatever you wanna do is fine, man… as long as you don’t hurt anyone else.”
But 1st century people, who saw Jesus with their own eyes had a very different impression of him.
For these devout Jews, Jesus’ claim to be God was blasphemy worthy of death.

John 19:11 says God has given Pilate authority over Jesus for a time.
And yet... that temporary authority puts Pilate in the most dangerous seat in the world…John 19:12.
12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16a So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.
The details in v13 about Pilate’s judgment seat actually helped archaeologists find it.
For now, Pilate sits in judgment over Jesus.
But one day, the tables will turn.
Jesus will sit in judgment over Pilate… and the entire world.
Many approach Jesus like the food critic from Ratatouille.
As if Jesus is a nervous chef desperate to win their approval.
“Oh no, do they like my teachings?”
“Will they be offended?
“Will they be upset that they have to change?”
You who would judge Jesus, remember he will judge you someday.
So get out of Jesus' judgment seat, and instead… beg for his mercy.

The irony of this passage keeps getting deeper, v19.
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.
Pilate wrote the message “Jesus is King” in three most common languages of the Roman Empire.
The man who condemned the King announces him to the world.

John 18 and 19 is a mini version of the story of Jesus.
Jesus proclaims a heavenly kingdom.
Lives without sin.
Dies for guilty rebels.
Is crowned King through the cross.
And his gospel goes to the nations.
Even if you're not a Christian...you have to admit there's beauty in this story.
So… what if it's true?
Let’s consider that in our final point.
Reversal #3: Jesus is rejected, but proven true (19:16b-27).
In John 18 and 19, the pace slows down.
John lingers over details in a way that he didn’t in the first 17 chapters.
Why?
To answer, look at v25.
25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
There's some key people standing at the foot of the cross.
Mary (Jesus' mother),
…Mary Magdalene,
…and John the Apostle.
The faithful Christian church is shrunk down to Jesus’ mom and a couple friends.
These witnesses ended up being key…
Mary, Jesus’ mom, ends up being a source for the gospel of Luke.
Mary Magdalene ends up being the first witness to resurrection in John 20.
And of course the apostle John, wrote this gospel we’ve been studying.
And we have good reason to trust their testimony.
Richard Bauckham is a New Testament scholar at the University of Cambridge.
He's a Christian, but his book Jesus and the Eyewitnesses is respected even by many non-Christian scholars.
Bauckham says listing names was an ancient way of identifying eyewitnesses.
In other words, John says, "These people saw Jesus crucified. If you don't believe me…here’s their names, go ask them!”
Here’s where Bauckham’s case gets a little scary.
When someone makes up a story, the names are the easiest give away.
I’m terrible with this, when I tell a fake story I make every person’s name “Steve.”
Bauckham did an extensive study comparing names found on first-century tombstones in Palestine with the names recorded in the Gospels.
And the Gospel authors completely nailed this…because they were just recording historical events.

This basis in history makes Christianity stand out from other belief systems.
The other day I met an atheist who believed that after you die… you just relive the same life over and over again.
I asked him why he believes that.
He said “oh well… it's just a nice idea that I hope is true.”
Christianity isn’t based on dreamed-up theories.
Christianity is based on historical events we believe actually happened.
Jesus died on a cross.
Jesus' tomb was found empty.
Christianity spread quickly right away.
Which, by the way, are facts historians agree on, not just Christians.
To explain away these facts you need crazy alternative theories.
The disciples hallucinated…
…the disciples lied…
…Jesus resuscitated…
…Jesus had a TWIN!
They say the simplest explanation is probably true.
Which would mean the Gospel of Jesus spread because… it's true.

When you look at Jesus hanging on a cross, you see an underdog.
A King, but not of this world.
Innocent, but declared guilty.
Rejected, but proven true.
On that day, Jesus didn't seem valuable in the eyes of the world.
There was a time when a hundred Bitcoin didn't seem very valuable, either.
Friends, Jesus offers something far more valuable than Bitcoin.
Citizenship in the eternal kingdom of God.
Today, I set before you two investments: Jesus, or the fleeting treasures of this world.
You have one life to live.
Where will you invest it?
