(See English below)
*****
Have you ever read a sequel but not read the first book?
Or watched only the second or third movie in a series?
In our passage today it might feel like that, jumping into the middle of a story.
This is because there are many references to the Old Testament in this section.
The Bible has two main parts to it, the Old and New Testaments.
The Old Testament tells the story of God’s people and his promises to them.
It includes their laws, history, and prophecies.
The New Testament tells the story of Jesus and how he changed the world forever.
This passage ties up all the things the first AND second “book” have been wanting you to know - It's the climax of the gospel of John.
In John 19:28-37, the author even tells us clearly what he wants you to get out of his book.
The main point is this: Because of Jesus' perfect sacrifice, you are fully clean and forgiven when you believe.
To understand the main idea we will look at the three big themes in this passage: Fulfillment, Forgiveness, and Faith.
First let's look at Fulfillment and what that means.
The Old Testament is full of stories and prophecies of things that were to come.
In literature, there's a principle all good authors know called Chekov’s Gun, named after advice from a renowned Russian playwright named Anton Chekov.
"One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isn't going to go off. It's wrong to make promises you don't mean to keep."
Thankfully the story and prophecy of the Old Testament was not just a story but true History.
The people were waiting for God to bring his promises to fruition, so that they would be relevant to their lives just like Chekov's gun.
Jesus came and was the fulfillment of the story.
John 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
That phrase “It is finished” in Greek is in the perfect tense.
It denotes a past reality that is currently affecting the present.
In English it might be better to say “it has been finished” or “it is accomplished.”
That phrase has so much depth and meaning but I want to focus on one major aspect of it, the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
In The Old testament there are many laws, rituals, and sacrifices that God expected the people to do.
No one ever in the history of the world lived up to those expectations perfectly.
The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
This is true of everyone but Jesus.
Jesus lived a perfect life, never sinning, always doing the right thing.
Jesus was perfect in every way but even though he lived a perfect life, he was killed as a sacrifice.
This is actually the fulfillment of many Old Testament sacrifices, but John is highlighting specifically the passover sacrifice.
The book of Exodus tells us about the passover.
The Israelites were in Egypt and were the Egyptian’s slaves.
God sent plagues on Egypt to convince the king, Pharaoh, to let them go.
He refused many times so the last plague God sent was the most severe, an angel of death.
God told the Israelites that if they wanted the angel to Pass Over their house, they would need to take a lamb, without blemish,
and without breaking any of its bones, put some of its blood on their doorway.
If they did, the angel would see the blood and pass over their house.
From this, Pharaoh let the Israelites go, freeing them from slavery and beginning their journey to the promised land.
This story became a major holiday for the Jews.
The night before Jesus was on the cross he ate a dinner celebrating the holiday with his disciples and passover is still going on while he is crucified.
John draws even more attention to Passover in verse 31.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.
John makes sure everyone knows that even though the soldiers broke the legs of the men who were crucified with Jesus: when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
Jesus is the fulfillment of the Passover lamb.
His death fully and completely delivers us from sin and out of the land of slavery and death.
Jesus completed the need for a passover and ended the need for any more animal sacrifices to please God.
Jesus died once for all as that perfect sacrifice.
God accepts Jesus’ work and perfection as your own.
When you believe in Jesus, the work is finished for you too.
You do not need to live perfectly to meet God’s standard because God has already given you Jesus’s perfect score and perfect life.
Of course, Christians still live good moral lives,
but that comes from love for God and the power of the Holy Spirit, not out of effort to please a god who is angry at you.
God already loves you.
If you believe in Jesus, God counts you as righteous.
Rest in that peace.
The next major theme in this passage is forgiveness.
Forgiveness in the Bible is when God chooses to not hold against us the ways that we have wronged him and by extension the people he made and loves.
Before we can really understand forgiveness, we need to understand what we need to be forgiven of: sin.
The Bible talks about sin as “missing the mark.”
God in the Old Testament told everyone how to live in accordance with his desire and will, but every human has gone against this.
This makes us guilty of crimes against God that someday he will judge.
One of the effects of our sin is shame.
Just like when someone breaks a law in our society they are no longer fully included, shame excludes.
Relationships and harmony with others are broken because of sin.
Some people might think this only applies to “big sins”: murder, theft, adultery.
But everything we do outside of God’s perfection is sin.
The Bible gives us a list in Gal 5 that includes things you might not think of: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. Those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
It might seem unfair that “small sins” would make us criminals against God.
Why would envy or divisions bar me from Heaven?
But in the perspective of an infinite, Holy God, these are not small actions.
All sin is an affront to God’s very nature.
It's like a rocket ship.
If you want to fly a rocket to mars, you must be exactly correct on the specifications of where Earth and Mars are in relation to one another.
You must be exact about the angle of the rocket, the speed it will travel and its weight.
If you get the angle wrong by only 1 degree you will miss your target by 3,927,389km.
What might seem small to you, is much more serious to God.
So what should we do?
Everyone here has sinned, big and small. But praise God, Jesus' death on the cross can forgive us our sin.
There are so many ways that John wrote about forgiveness in this passage.
Remember the Passover Lamb?
The blood from that lamb saved the people from the death they deserved.
It also allowed the people to be brought out of the land of sin and death into the Holy land of God.
Jesus' death mirrors this exactly.
But John does not stop there, he focuses on two Old testament passages that are fulfilled right after Jesus dies.
John says: 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
John quotes Psalm 34 when he says: "Not one of his bones will be broken.”
This Psalm discusses a righteous person who trusts in God.
Psa. 34:19 says Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
John quotes this verse to prove that Jesus was not secretly a wicked man being punished for his own sins.
Actually, he is God’s righteous servant who is dying in the stead of guilty people.
We also see in John’s text, an allusion to Deuteronomy 21.
“And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God.
This verse shows us Jesus was cursed by God, but he did not commit any crimes punishable by death.
Jesus took that curse and died in YOUR place.
He took on the sins that you and I have done and bore the consequences in his own body on the Cross.
The second Old Testament verse John quotes is Zech 12:10.
I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Two things about this amaze me.
The first is that God is talking in this verse, saying that HE is the one who is pierced.
If we know this is a prophecy about Jesus, it tells us that Jesus is God!
The second thing John wants to emphasize is this:
God is pouring out a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy on the people.
That is, God’s undeserved grace on us, coming from the piercing and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The mercy of God came from Jesus and the people mourning here are probably doing so because they realized, in light of God’s mercy, how sinful they are.
Then how amazing, complete and full the grace of God is and how thankful they are that God loved them so much to give them grace.
Zechariah goes on to say: "On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”
That “fountain” so to speak is the blood and water flowing from Jesus' side.
God has opened up a fountain to cleanse you from sin and unrighteousness through Jesus.
You can be forgiven, you can be saved, you can be washed, Jesus has made a way!
I wanted to read these verses to show you that God has always planned to save us through his son Jesus.
These verses were written 1400 to 1000 years before Jesus was born.
God’s promises always come true, so you can trust that He will follow through on his plans.
And in God’s plan, the forgiveness that he offers is open to everyone.
The question now is this: How do we get forgiveness?
Which brings us to the third major theme in the passage, Faith.
John makes it very clear why he wrote this section and his entire Gospel.
This story is the climax of the book, so he gives a little editorial here in verse 35:
He who saw it has borne witness— his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth— that you also may believe.
John's goal for this book is that you believe, but believe what exactly?
There are two main truths you should believe. First is: Believe this is a real event.
This really happened. It is not just a story.
These events had to have happened in reality, if they didn’t this is all meaningless.
Stories are great to teach people lessons, but Christianity is not just about changing your life in this world.
Christianity changes all of creation, all of time, all of reality.
If this was just another new philosophy, nothing changes about our eternity, and it's all up to us to make a far away God happy.
But if these events really did happen, everything has changed!
The story of Jesus is as real as the law of gravity.
Non- Christian friends, we are thankful that you are here today.
If you want to be saved, you need to believe in Jesus.
The Bible says to call on the name of Lord to be saved, then, repent and be baptized.
It only makes sense to do these things if you believe this is true and believe in Jesus.
Belief changes what you do.
If you did not believe the chair you are sitting in was strong enough to hold you, you wouldn’t sit in it.
If you did not believe the train was safe and reliable to take you to your destination you wouldn’t ride it.
If you did not believe that the food you eat and water you drank would satisfy your hunger and thirst and nourish your body, you would not eat or drink.
You live your life based on belief.
Jesus’ death and resurrection has changed all of reality, past, present and future.
If you want your whole reality to change, to match up with the rest of the world that has already been changed, believe in Jesus today.
The second truth you should believe is: God already accomplished all the work in Jesus
Stop working to make God happy.
When you believe, he is already happy with you.
Stop trying to earn your salvation, you can't do it.
When you believe, all of your sin is put on Jesus.
There is none left to condemn you.
Sure, Christians should stop sinning and begin to look more like righteous Jesus as they grow in their faith.
But comes from love for our savior, knowing that all the work is finished by him.
If you are still striving to make God happy with you,
to become a good enough person to be accepted,
believe that Jesus has saved you and has fully paid for your sins.

There are two responses people typically have to Jesus’ death.
One seen in John is the Jewish religious leaders.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.
They were still trying to do things to please God without any awareness of the truth.
These leaders go on with their religious lives, unaware they just killed God's son.
That is like robbing a bank but then going to pay a parking ticket.
Many people in our day after hearing the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection, respond similarly.
People either don't realize what happened or they do but don't want to change.
We can look back at Zechariah 12:10 which says: I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Everyone, on a day coming soon, will look at the face of God and mourn.
Some will mourn, contrite from the sin they know killed Jesus.
Which then will turn to joy and thankfulness for the unmerited forgiveness.
Some will mourn knowing their sin has condemned them from a holy God.
We all get to choose our fate, believe in Jesus and cry tears of joy.
