復活①：空になった墓 | Resurrection I: Empty Tomb ヨハネの福音書19章38〜20章18節 John 19:38-20:18

1670年、アントニ・ファン・レーウェンフックは、顕微鏡を使って微生物の研究を始めました。

「私たちの体には、今では細菌や病原菌と呼ばれている、とても小さな生き物がたくさんいて、その中には人を重い病気にするものもある」と言ったなら、誰もが笑ったことでしょう。

しかし、病原菌(びょうげんきん)の存在が信じにくかったからといって、病原菌が存在しなかったわけではありません。

今日の箇所で、ヨハネは私たちに、信じることが難しいいくつかの真理を伝えています。

この箇所の前では、神であり人であるイエスが、犯罪者として残酷な拷問を受け、殺されました。

しかし今日の箇所では、イエスは王のように葬られ、神に選ばれ、愛された御子として、死者の中からよみがえります。

人が死者の中からよみがえったのでしょうか。

そのようなことは、普通は起こりません。

しかし、今日の中心的なメッセージはこれです。

イエスの復活は歴史的な事実であり、信じるすべての人に新しい命を与えます。

この箇所には、信じることが難しくても、私たちが信じなければならない三つの真理があります。

第一の真理は、イエスの復活は本当に起こったということです。

このような驚くべき主張には、それにふさわしい確かな証拠が必要です。

しかし感謝なことに、私たちには、その出来事を実際に目撃し、書き残した人物がいます。 それがヨハネです。

ヨハネによる福音書の書き方を見ると、ここに記されていることが、単なる神話や宗教的な宣伝、新しい哲学の体系ではなく、歴史の中で実際に起こった出来事であることが分かります。

ヨハネが記している細かな描写は、後の時代にこの福音書を書いた人ではなく、その出来事を実際にその場で目撃した人にしか書けないものです。

今日の箇所は、38節に記されているイエスの埋葬から始まります。

その後で、イエスの弟子であったが、ユダヤ人を恐れてそれを隠していたアリマタヤのヨセフが、イエスのからだを取り降ろすことをピラトに願い出た。ピラトは許可を与えた。そこで彼はやって来て、イエスのからだを取り降ろした。

ピラトはローマの総督でした。非常に高い地位にある重要な人物で、普通の人が簡単に会える相手ではありませんでした。

そしてヨセフは、ここまでヨハネの福音書に一度も登場していない人物です。

では、なぜヨセフはピラトと直接話すことができたのでしょうか。

ほかの福音書によると、ヨセフは議員の一人で、...議員たちの計画や行動には同意していなかった。

ヨハネの記録は、ほかの福音書と一致しています。さらに、ヨセフがひそかにイエスに従っていたことも記しています。

39節には、こう書かれています:以前、夜イエスのところに来たニコデモも、没薬と沈香を混ぜ合わせたものを、百リトラほど持ってやって来た。彼らはイエスのからだを取り、ユダヤ人の埋葬の習慣にしたがって、香料と一緒に亜麻布で巻いた。

75ポンドは、約34キログラムです。

これは非常に大量の香料です。しかし、ほかの古代の資料も、この記述を裏付けています。

王や社会的に重要な人物が葬られるときには、これほど多くの香料が使われることがありました。

イエスが十字架につけられた場所には園があり、そこに、まだだれも葬られたことのない新しい墓があった。その日はユダヤ人の備え日であり、その墓が近かったので、彼らはそこにイエスを納めた。

もう一つの福音書であるマタイの福音書は、この場面についてさらに詳しく伝えています。

ヨセフは、金持ちで、イエスを岩を掘って造った自分の新しい墓に納めた。そして墓の入り口に大きな石を転がしておいて、立ち去った人です。

イエスが納められたのは、このような形の墓でした。

このような墓は一般的ではなく、裕福な人だけが持つことのできるものでした。

多くの場合、墓の中には複数の部屋があり、家族はそれぞれの場所に家族の遺体を納めていました。

しかし、イエスの墓は、まだだれも葬られたことのない新しい墓でした。

この点は、次の場面を理解するうえで重要です。

マリアはペテロとヨハネに、だれかが墓の石を動かし、イエスのからだがなくなっていると伝えます。

そこで弟子たちは、マリアが話していることを確かめるため、墓まで走って行きました。

そして、彼らが墓に着くと、5節にはこう書かれています。そして、身をかがめると、ヨハネは亜麻布が置いてあるのが見えたが、中に入らなかった。そしてその後、マリアも、泣きながら、からだをかがめて墓の中をのぞき込んだ。

ヨハネが「身をかがめる」という表現を使ったのは、墓の入り口がこのように低い形をしていたからです。墓の中を見るためには、実際に身をかがめる必要がありました。

また、ヨハネが墓の外から亜麻布を見ることができたのは、その墓が新しく、入り口から見えない奥の部屋がなかったからだと考えられます。

このような細かな描写は、ヨハネが自分の記憶をもとに、自ら目撃した出来事を自分の視点から書いていることを示しています。

3節は: そこで、ペテロともう一人の弟子は外に出て、墓へ行った。4 二人は一緒に走ったが、もう一人の弟子がペテロよりも速かったので、先に墓に着いた。5 そして、身をかがめると、亜麻布が置いてあるのが見えたが、中に入らなかった。6 彼に続いてシモン・ペテロも来て、墓に入り、亜麻布が置いてあるのを見た。7 イエスの頭を包んでいた布は亜麻布と一緒にはなく、離れたところに丸めてあった。

この書き方から、何か感じませんか。まるで、自分が体験した驚くべき出来事を、友人に語っているようです。

「二人が墓まで走っていきます。一人が先に着きますが、中には入りません。するともう一人が中へ入り、そのあとで最初の人も入ります。そこには、イエス様を包んでいた布が置かれていて、顔を覆っていた布だけは別にきちんとたたまれていました。」

ここには、この出来事を実際に体験した人が語ったことを示す、数多くの細かな描写があります。

この物語は、まるで本人の記憶を語るように書かれています。

そして、ヨハネの正直さには驚かされます。

そのとき、先に墓に着いたもう一人の弟子も入って来た。そして見て、信じた。9 彼らは、イエスが死人の中からよみがえらなければならないという聖書を、まだ理解していなかった。

この物語を語っている本人は、この時に信じたものの、まだ十分には理解していなかったと告白しています。つまり、自分自身をあまり理解の早くない人物として描いているのです。

たとえば、選挙運動中の政治家が、「皆さん、私は経済を立て直します」と言ったとします。

「しかし、私は数学も経済学も学んだことがありません」と続けたら、どうでしょうか。

その人には投票しないかもしれません。しかし、少なくとも正直な人だとは分かるでしょう。

次に、マリアの物語へと移ります。彼女は、空になった墓を見て、復活された主イエスに出会った最初の証人です。

さて、週の初めの日、朝早くまだ暗いうちに、マグダラのマリアは墓にやって来て、墓から石が取りのけられているのを見た。

その後、ペテロとヨハネが立ち去ると、次のようなことが起こります。一方、マリアは墓の外にたたずんで泣いていた。そして、泣きながら、からだをかがめて墓の中をのぞき込んだ。12 すると、白い衣を着た二人の御使いが、イエスのからだが置かれていた場所に、一人は頭のところに、一人は足のところに座っているのが見えた。13 彼らはマリアに言った。「女の方、なぜ泣いているのですか。」彼女は言った。「だれかが私の主を取って行きました。どこに主を置いたのか、私には分かりません。」14 彼女はこう言ってから、うしろを振り向いた。そして、イエスが立っておられるのを見たが、それがイエスであることが分からなかった。15 イエスは彼女に言われた。「なぜ泣いているのですか。だれを捜しているのですか。」

当時、女性の証言は法廷で十分に重く扱われず、信頼できないものと見なされることがありました。

そしてこの場面で、マリアは泣きながら取り乱し、御使いたちを見ても驚く余裕さえなく、必死に問い続けています。

主を失った悲しみがあまりにも大きく、落ち着いて考えることさえできない状態です。

それでもヨハネは、マリアを復活の最初の証人として記録し、イエスがよみがえられたことを男性の弟子たちに伝えた人物として描いています。

本当にそのとおりに起こったのでなければ、ヨハネがマリアを最初の証人として記すことはなかったでしょう。

一見すると小さく思えるこれらの細かな描写には、大切な意味があります。

キリスト教は、哲学的な推測ではなく、歴史的な事実に基づいています。

そして、その出来事を伝える聖書は、信頼することのできる書物です。

これは、何百年も後になって、人々を教会に入らせ、お金を献げさせるために書かれた本ではありません。

また、ヨハネが有名になるために作り上げた伝説でもありません。

このような細かな描写は、神話や宣伝のために作られた物語には普通見られないものです。

これは、人類の歴史全体を変えた出来事についての、歴史的な記録です。

ヨハネは、この出来事の歴史的な詳細を伝えると同時に、そこに示されている神学的な真理を私たちに教えるため、注意深くこの福音書を書きました。

第二の真理は、イエスの復活が、イエスが本当はどのようなお方であるかを示しているということです。

イエスは亡くなり、ヨセフとニコデモがそのからだを扱っています。

イエスのからだは亜麻布で包まれ、墓に納められました。

このことは、イエスが本当に死んでおられたことを示しています。

それは当たり前のことだと思うかもしれません。しかし、多くの大切な真理が、この事実にかかっています

聖書は、イエスが完全な神であり、完全な人であると教えています。

聖書は、イエスが完全な神であり、同時に完全な人であったと教えています。

復活についても同じです。

イエスは実際に、肉体をもって死者の中からよみがえられました。

これは、キリスト教信仰の中心です。

私たちの信仰が成り立つためには、これが真実でなければなりません。

たとえば、だれかに車の運転を教えてもらおうとしていたとします。

しかし、その人自身は一度も車を運転したことがありません

その人のアドバイスを少しは聞くかもしれません。しかし、自分の命や安全に関わる技術を、その人に教えてもらおうとは思わないでしょう。

イエスが私たちを死から救うことのできる、信頼に値する救い主であるためには、イエスご自身が本当に死を経験される必要がありました。

イエスの復活が本当に起こったことを擁護し、証明するために、数多くの本や論文が書かれています。

ここでは、その理由をいくつか簡単にお話しします。

第一に、イエスが死者の中からよみがえったという知らせは、エルサレムとユダヤ人社会に大きな騒ぎを引き起こしました。

指導者たちがその騒ぎを鎮めたかったなら、イエスの遺体を人々に見せればよかったのです。

聖書によると、イエスは十字架につけられた場所の近く、町のすぐ外にある墓に葬られました。

皆がその墓の場所を知っていたはずです。しかし、だれも墓からイエスの遺体を持ち出して、人々に示すことはできませんでした。

イエスの弟子たちが、新しい宗教を広め、お金や名声を得るために、イエスの遺体を盗んだのだと言う人もいるかもしれません。

しかし実際には、イエスの弟子たちは激しい迫害を受けました。

イエスの弟子たちは皆、イエスの復活を信じたために苦しみを受け、中には殺された者さえいました。

もしイエスの復活が弟子たちの作り話だったなら、なぜ彼らは、それが嘘だと知りながら、激しい苦しみを受け、命まで捨てたのでしょうか。

しかし歴史を通して、イエスの死と復活を否定する人々も多くいました。

コーランでは、神が別の人物をイエスのように見せ、その人がイエスの代わりに死んだとされています。

また、イエスは本当には死なず、ただ意識を失い、後になって目を覚ましただけだと言う人もいます。

しかし、イエスが本当に死者の中からよみがえられたということは、私たちにとって非常に大切です。

ローマ人への手紙6章には:私たちは、キリストの死にあずかるバプテスマによって、キリストとともに葬られたのです。それは、ちょうどキリストが御父の栄光によって死者の中からよみがえられたように、私たちも、新しいいのちに歩むためです。私たちがキリストの死と同じようになって、キリストと一つになっているなら、キリストの復活とも同じようになるからです。

あなたがイエスを信じるとき、イエスの死は、あなたのための死として認められます。

同じように、最後の日には、イエスがよみがえられたように、あなたもよみがえります。

もしイエスが本当に死者の中からよみがえらなかったなら、この希望も、この約束も成り立ちません。

感謝すべきことに、イエスは私たちを救うために本当に死なれました。ですから、私たちは復活によって新しいいのちを受けることができます。

新しいいのちが始まるのを、イエスが再び来られる時まで待つ必要はありません。

この箇所を見ると、イエスの周りにいた人々の人生の中で、すでに新しいいのちが始まっていることが分かります。

第三の真理は、イエスの死と復活には、人の人生を変える力があるということです。

まず、ヨセフとニコデモを見てみましょう。

アリマタヤのヨセフ

ヨハネはこう伝えています:イエスの弟子であったが、ユダヤ人を恐れてそれを隠していた。また、ルカ23章にはこう書かれています。

ユダヤ人の町アリマタヤの出身で、神の国を待ち望んでいた彼は、議員たちの計画や行動には同意していなかった。

つまりヨセフは、パリサイ人たちがイエスを陥れようとするのを、ずっと近くで見聞きしていました。そして、不正な裁判によってイエスを有罪とした議会にも出席していました。

しかしヨハネは、人生を変えるイエスの死の後、ヨセフについて次のように伝えています。イエスのからだを取り降ろすことをその地方の総督ピラトに願い出た。ピラトは許可を与えた。

この願い出は、当然、人々に知られることになります。彼が恐れていた人々も、信仰を隠そうとしていた相手も、皆、彼がイエスの弟子であることを知ることになりました。

ヨセフは、それまで持っていなかった勇気を与えられたのです。

ニコデモについても同じです。

ヨハネ福音書によると以前、夜イエスのところに来たニコデモも、没薬と沈香を混ぜ合わせたものを、百リトラほど持ってやって来た。

ヨハネの福音書の前の箇所で、ニコデモはイエスの教えを聞くためにやって来ました。

しかし彼も、人々にどう思われるかを恐れていたため、夜にイエスのもとを訪れました。

しかし今、約34キログラムもの香料を人目につく墓へ持って行くことで、ニコデモは、自分がイエスを信じていることを皆の前で明らかにしました。

何か奇跡的なことが、二人の臆病さを大胆さへと変えたのです。

次の箇所では、ヨハネ自身も変えられたことが分かります。

8節にはそのとき、先に墓に着いたもう一人の弟子(ヨハネ）も入って来た。そして見て、信じた。彼らは、イエスが死人の中からよみがえらなければならないという聖書を、まだ理解していなかった。

ヨハネは、何が起こったのかをまだ完全には理解していなかったものの、見て、信じたと言っています。

ヨハネは、自分自身が聖書について混乱しており、神が御言葉で語られたすべてをまだ十分には理解していなかったことを、正直に記録しています。それでも彼は信じました。

イエスの死と復活は、混乱と理解できないことの中にいたヨハネに、信仰を与えました。

そしてマリアの場合、十字架と復活の力は、彼女の悲しみと不安を、平安と使命へと変えました。

思い出してください。彼女は泣いていて、御使いたちを見ても、それが何を意味するのか分からないほどでした。

そして、ついにイエスを見たときでさえ、それがイエスだとは分かりませんでした。彼女は、彼が園の管理人だと思って言った。「あなたがあの方を運び去ったのでしたら、どこに置いたのか教えてください。私が引き取ります。」

しかしそのとき:イエスは彼女に言われた。「マリア。」

これは、ヨハネの福音書10章でイエスが語られた言葉を思い起こさせます:羊たちはその声を聞き分けます。牧者は自分の羊たちを、それぞれ名を呼んで連れ出します。

イエスはマリアに平安を与えます。

彼女は自分の将来について、深く心配し、希望を失っていました。

彼女はイエスに従うためにすべてを捨てていました。もしイエスが死んだままなら、自分の将来がどうなるのか、まったく分かりませんでした。

しかし、イエスは死んだままではありません。よみがえられたのです。

そしてイエスは、マリアをその場に置き去りにはせず、彼女に使命を与えられます。

イエスは彼女に言われた。「わたしにすがりついていてはいけません。わたしはまだ父のもとに上っていないのです。わたしの兄弟たちのところに行って、『わたしは、わたしの父であり、あなたがたの父である方、わたしの神であり、あなたがたの神である方のもとに上る』と伝えなさい。」

マグダラのマリアは行って、弟子たちに「私は主を見ました」と言い、主が自分にこれらのことを話されたと伝えた。

イエスはマリアに、希望と平安、そして使命を与えました。

復活の力は、彼女の人生を絶望から変えました。

確信と目的を持つ人生へと変えたのです。

皆さん、ヨハネがこれらの出来事を記録したのは、イエスの死と復活が持つ、世界を根本から変える力の始まりを、私たちに示すためです。

あなたが信じるなら、その力は今日、あなたにも与えられます。

ローマ人への手紙 8:11は、私たちに約束を与えています。

イエスを死者の中からよみがえらせた方の御霊が、あなたがたのうちに住んでおられるなら、キリストを死者の中からよみがえらせた方は、あなたがたのうちに住んでおられるご自分の御霊によって、あなたがたの死ぬべきからだも生かしてくださいます。

今日、信じてください。そして、ヨセフとニコデモ、ペテロとヨハネ、そしてマグダラのマリアのように、あなたの人生も変えていただきましょう。

ヨハネはここで、非常に信じることの難しい三つの真理を伝えています。人が死者の中からよみがえるということは、日常的に起こることではありません。

しかし、キリストの復活は、すべての人が神と自分自身をどのように理解するかに、重大な意味を持っています。

これらは信じることが難しいかもしれません。しかし、これらの細かな事実はすべて重要です。なぜなら、神があなたを愛しておられることを示しているからです。

神は、あなたが神をより深く知ることができるように、信頼できる御言葉を与えてくださいました。

イエスが肉体をもって死に、肉体をもってよみがえられたことは、神があなたを肉体を持つ存在として造られたことには、大切な意味があると示しています。

このからだをもってどのように生きるかは重要です。そして、今の私たちの人生は、死で終わる必要はありません。

私たちも、イエスのようによみがえることができます。

そして、イエスを死者の中からよみがえらせた同じ力によって、あなたも変えられることができます。

神は、あなたが御子イエスに似た者となることを願い、そのための力も与えてくださいました。

これほど暗い世界の中では、それを信じることが難しいかもしれません。しかし、信じることが難しいからといって、それが真実ではないということにはなりません。

お祈りしましょう。

父なる神様、今朝、あなたの御言葉を与えてくださったことを感謝します。

あなたの御言葉は真理です。あなたがどのようなお方か、私たちがどのような者かを教えてくださいます。

あなたの真理を理解できるよう助けてください。

イエス様、十字架で死に、よみがえってくださったことを感謝します。

自分中心の生き方を捨て、イエス様のように新しく生きられるよう助けてください。

イエス様のお名前によってお祈りします。

In 1670 Antonie van Leeuwenhoek started studying microorganisms with the microscope. 

Before this time, if you had said there are tiny living organisms (now called bacteria or germs) all over your body

and some of them make you really sick, 

everyone would have laughed at you. 

But even though it might have been hard to believe that germs were real, it did not make them any less real. 

In our passage today John tells us of some truths that are hard to believe.

In the gospel story before this section, Jesus the God-Man has been brutally tortured and killed as a criminal, 

…but in our passage today, Jesus is buried as a king, and resurrects from the dead as God's chosen and beloved son.

 A man has risen from the dead?

 That doesn’t happen often. 

But, MAIN POINT: The resurrection is a historical fact that gives everyone who believes new life.

There are three hard to believe truths in this passage that we must believe in. 

Truth number 1- The Resurrection of Jesus really happened. 

This extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence. 

But thankfully for us, we have an eyewitness who wrote it down for us, John. 

The way that John wrote his gospel shows that these were real events in history, not just myth, religious propaganda, or some new philosophical system. 

The details that John includes could only be produced by someone who was there at the time, not someone who wrote the book later. 

Our section begins at the burial of Jesus in verse 38: 

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly  for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 

Pilate was a Roman governor, a very important and high person who was not accessible to the average person, 

And Joseph is a man who hasn’t yet been mentioned in the gospel.

So why was Joseph able to talk to him? 

Well the other gospels tell us that Joseph was a member of the council … who had not consented to their decision and action 

So John's story matches the other gospels but goes further to add that Joseph followed Jesus secretly.

Vs 39 says: Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came  bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and  bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 

75 pound is about 34 Kilograms, 

That is a large amount of spices, but other ancient sources corroborate this detail. 

Kings and other important figures were buried with this amount of spices. 

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb  in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. 

Another Gospel, Matthew, tells us  more details about this scene. 

Joseph was: a rich man who laid Jesus in his own new tomb,  which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled  a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 

This is the style of tomb Jesus was laid in. 

It was not very common and only available to the rich. 

Often they would have multiple rooms where families would put different family members, here and here. 

…but Jesus’ tomb was new, where no one had yet been laid. 

This detail is interesting for our next part of the story:  

Mary tells Peter and John that someone has moved the stone and Jesus’ body isn’t there. 

So the disciples run to see what she is talking about 

and when they arrive, Vs 5 says: stooping to look in, he [John] saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in and later Mary as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 

John would only use this stooping word if the tomb was shaped like this one, cause they would be, well, stooping. 

And John could have only seen the clothes from the outside if the tomb was new, lacking other chambers that would be out of view from the door.

These details, recalled as memories, prove that John was an eyewitness writing this from his perspective.

verse 5 says: 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw  the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.

Do you hear how this was written? Just like you would recount an amazing story to a friend. 

There is a race but one guy gets there first, doesn't go in, then the other goes in, the first guy follows. The cloths are folded and there’s like two separate ones. 

There are many details here that prove this is a story recounted by someone who lived it. 

And John’s honesty is astounding. 

 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet  they did not understand the Scripture,  that he must rise from the dead. 

The guy who tells the story says this is the moment where he believes, but he still does not understand, painting HIMSELF as not very smart.

If a politician was on campaign and said: “Everyone! I will fix the economy

…but I don’t have any education in math or economics.”

You might not vote for him, but you would know he is being honest. 

Then we get to Mary’ story. Mary is the first witness to see the empty tomb and the risen Lord Jesus. 

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that  the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 

Then after Peter and John left: Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And  she saw  two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her,  “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them,  “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and  saw Jesus standing,  but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her,  “Woman, why are you weeping?  Whom are you seeking?” 

Women at this time were not legally considered witnesses in court, they were seen as untrustworthy. 

And in this story here Mary is hysterical, crying, not recognizing the angels, asking frantic questions.

She is so distraught from losing her Lord that she can’t even think straight.

But John here records her as the first witness and the one who tells the men Jesus has risen. 

Here’s what these seemingly small details mean…

Christianity is based on historical fact, not philosophical assumption.

And the Bible that relays this information is trustworthy. 

This is not a book written hundreds of years later to get people to join a church and give them money. 

This is not a legend John wrote to get famous. 

And details like these don't exist in myth or propaganda.

This is a historical account of events that change all of human history.

John carefully wrote it to tell us all the historical details, but also to teach us about the theological truths of this event. 

Truth #2- Jesus resurrection shows us who Jesus really was: 

So Jesus has died and Joseph and Nicodemus are handling his body. 

Jesus is wrapped in linen clothes and laid in a tomb. 

This shows us that Jesus was in fact, dead. 

You might think that is obvious, but so much hinges on this fact being true. 

The Bible tells us that Jesus was fully God and fully man. 

If Jesus did not really die, but only appeared to die, he cannot save us from death.

The same is true for the resurrection. 

Jesus actually rose from the dead in a physical body. 

This is the center point of all of Christianity. 

This must be true for our faith to stand. 

If you were trusting someone to teach you how to drive a car

But you learned they had never driven a car themselves before

You might take some of their advice, but you would not trust them to teach you a skill that risks your life and safety. 

Jesus must have truly experienced death to be trustworthy to save us from death. 

There are volumes worth of books and articles defending and proving that Jesus' resurrection really happened. 

 I will give you just a few short reasons. 

First, once Jesus rose from the dead, his resurrection caused an uproar in Jerusalem and the Jewish world. 

If the leaders wanted to quell the uproar, all they would have to do is show everyone Jesus' body.

The Bible says he was buried in a tomb near the crucifixion which was just right outside of town. 

Everyone would have known where the tomb was, but they did not produce his body from the tomb. 

Some might say that Jesus followers stole his body to propagate their new religion, get money, and be famous,

but Jesus followers were actually heavily persecuted. 

Every one of Jesus' disciples suffered for their belief in Jesus' resurrection, some were even killed. 

If they were lying about Jesus rising from the dead, why would they suffer terribly and die for something they knew was a lie? 

However there are many people throughout history who deny Jesus' death and resurrection. 

The Quran says that God disguised someone else to die in Jesus’ place. 

Some people say that Jesus did not actually die, but only went unconscious and woke up later. 

But it’s so important for us that Jesusactually rose from the dead. 

Romans 6 says: We were  buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as  Christ was raised from the dead by  the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

When you believe in Jesus his death counts for you. 

In the same way you will be resurrected on the last day just as Jesus was.

If Jesus did not really rise from the dead, these hopes, these promises are not possible. 

Thank God Jesus did die to save us and so we will have new life in the resurrection. 

We do not have to wait for new life to start when Jesus comes back, 

We see in this section the beginnings of new life already starting in the lives of the people surrounding Jesus. 

Truth #3 The death and resurrection of Jesus has the power to change lives. 

Starting with Joseph and Nicodemus.

John tells us that Joseph of Arimathea, … was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews. In Luke 23 it tells us He was a member of the council, … who had not consented to their decision and action.

So Joseph has been around this whole time, hearing the Pharisees try to trap Jesus and even sat on the council that condemned Jesus in a sham trial. 

But John tells us that after Jesus' life changing death, Joseph: asked Pilate [The Governor of the region] that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. 

This ask would have been known to everyone, everyone who he had been afraid of, that he was trying to keep his faith a secret from would know. 

Joseph has been given courage he hadn’t had before. 

The same goes for Nicodemus. 

John says 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 

Earlier in John's gospel, Nicodemus came to Jesus to listen to his teaching but 

Nicodemus came by night because he too was afraid of what other people would think, 

But now bringing 34 kilograms of spices to a public tomb announces to everyone that Nicodemeus believes. 

Something miraculous has changed their cowardice into boldness. 

The next section tells us John has changed too. 

Verse 8 The other disciple [John],  who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 

John says he saw and believed, even though he did not fully understand what happened. 

He records he himself was confused about the Scriptures and did not fully believe everything God said in his word yet, but he does believe.

The death and resurrection of Jesus gave John belief in the face of confusion and misunderstanding. 

And for Mary, the power of the Cross and Resurrection turned her Sadness and insecurity into peace and mission. 

Remember she was crying, and didn’t even really recognize the angels. 

And when she finally sees Jesus, she doesn’t recognize him.

Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 

But then:  Jesus said to her, “Mary.” 

 This reminds us of John 10 when Jesus says: The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 

Jesus gives Mary peace. 

She was so worried, and hopeless for her future. 

She had given up everything to follow Jesus and had no idea what her future had in store for her if he was dead. 

But Jesus is not dead, he is risen. 

And Jesus does not leave her there, but commissions her:  

Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. 

Jesus gives Mary hope, peace, and a mission. 

The power of the resurrection has turned her life from despair

…to security and purposefulness.

Friends, John left us these stories to show us the beginning of the radical, world-changing power of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

That power is available to you today, if you will believe

Romans 8:11 gives us a promise:

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, 

he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. 

Believe today to let your life be changed, just like Joseph and Nicodemus, Peter and John, and Mary Magedalene.

John tells us three really hard truths to believe here. It isn’t every day that someone rises from the dead. 

But the resurrection of Christ has implications for how everyone understands God and themselves. 

But while hard to believe, all of these details matter because they show us that God loves you.

God gave you his Word which is reliable so you could know him better. 

Jesus died and rose again in a physical body to show you the way he made you is important, 

…what you do in this body matters, and the lives we live now do not have to end in death! 

We can be resurrected like Jesus. 

And you can change through the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. 

God wants you to be more like his Son Jesus and he gave you the power to do so.

It might be hard to believe that in a world so dark, but just because it is hard to believe does not mean it isn’t true.

Father, I thank you for your Word this morning. 

Your word is truth, revealing to us who you are and who we are to you. 

Help us understand all the different facets of your truth.

Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross and rising to new life

Help us die to ourselves so we can be resurrected like you Jesus.
