復活②：使命の土台|Resurrection II: Foundation for Mission ヨハネの福音書20章19～31節 John 20:19-31

私たちの教会では、「ファースト・ステップ」という本を用いて、クリスチャンではないけれど、もっとキリスト教について知りたいと思っている方々にキリスト教について紹介しています。

本の途中では、参加者の方が今どのような霊的状態にいるのかを確認するための質問があります。

何年にもわたって多くの方達とこの内容を学んできましたが 、その中で一つの質問が特に印象に残っています 。

あなたは、イエスが死からよみがえられたと信じていますか？

他の質問には「はい」と答えた人たちが、この質問には「いいえ」と答えることがよくあります。

そして、もし「はい」と答える人がいたら、私はいつも 「本当に？」と聞き返します。

この質問は、その人が救いに至る信仰を本当に持っているかを見分けるために重要です

ローマ人への手紙 10章９節　

なぜなら、もしあなたの口でイエスを主と告白し、あなたの心で神はイエスを死者の中からよみがえらせたと信じるなら、あなたは救われるからです。

キリストの復活は、個人の信仰を左右するだけのものではなくて……キリスト教の信仰そのものの成否（せいひ）を決めるものなのです。

コリント人への手紙第一15章では、もしキリストが死から復活していなければ、キリスト教そのものが真実ではないと語っています

しかし、もしイエス様が本当に死から復活されたのなら、キリスト教は真実であり、イエス様が教えられたすべてを私たちは受け入れる必要があります。

皆さん、徐々に大きくなっていくドミノを想像してみてください。

イエス様の復活を信じることは、最初の小さなドミノを倒すようなものです。

復活を信じるなら、その後に続くすべてのこともついてきます。

もしあなたがイエス様の復活を信じるなら、あなたの役割は、人々に、その最初のドミノを倒すように伝えることです

ヨハネ20章では、復活されたイエス様を見た人々は、そのことを周囲に伝える使命を与えられています。

イエス様の復活は、クリスチャンに託された全ての使命の基盤となっています。

そこで今日は、イエス様の復活が、クリスチャンに託された使命に対して、どんな意味を持つのか共に考えていきたいと思います。

復活とは、私たち信仰者が、イエス様の御名にあるいのちについて信頼できる証言を携えて、三位一体（さんみいったい）の神によって遣わされるということです。

ヨハネ20章をもとに、この文章を3つに分けて考えてみましょう

もしイエス様の復活を信じているなら、あなたは……

三位一体の神によって遣わされています

イエス様が亡くなったとき、弟子たちのほとんどはイエス様を見捨てました。

しかしその三日後、イエス様は死から復活されます。

そして復活後に、初めて弟子たちの前に現れます。

その日、すなわち週の初めの日の夕方、弟子たちがいたところでは、ユダヤ人を恐れて戸に鍵がかけられていた。すると、イエスが来て彼らの真ん中に立ち、こう言われた。「平安があなたがたにあるように。」

この時イエス様にとって「だから言ったじゃないか」と言う絶好のチャンスでした

しかしイエス様は、そのチャンスに乗ることはせず、

弟子たちの失敗を蒸し返す代わりに、イエス様は「あなたがたに平安があるように」と言われました。

苦い思いを抱くどころか 、ご自分の死によって成し遂げられたこと、それは「平安」であることを知ってほしいと願われたのです。

イエス様は、私たちに真（まこと）の平安をもたらすため死なれたのです。

私たちの罪は、私たちを神に敵対する者としました。

しかし十字架で、イエス様は罪に対する神の怒りを引き受けてくださいました

そして今、あなたがイエス様を信じるなら、神との間に平和を得ることができます

福音は、神との間に「平和」を得ることによって与えられる、心の「平安」をもたらします。

復活されたキリストが伝えるこのメッセージは、キリスト教を他の宗教から際立たせています

２０節

こう言って、イエスは手と脇腹を彼らに示された。弟子たちは主を見て喜んだ。

復活し栄光のうちにおられるキリストが、なお手と脇腹に傷跡を残しておられるのは、驚くべきことです

他の宗教では、神々は遠く離れた存在であり、人間の苦しみに心を向けません

他の神々は「正しく生きなさい。そうすれば、あなたを救うかもしれない」と言います

キリスト教の神はまったく違います

神はこう言われます。

「あなたは正しい生き方をしてこなかった。それでも私はあなたを救う。」

キリスト教の神は、人間の苦しみを深く気にかけておられ、それゆえ、キリストとしてこの世に来られ、自ら進んで苦しみを負われました

この真理は、第一次世界大戦を経験したエドワード・シリトーがPTSDと向き合う支えとなりました

彼は『傷跡のあるイエス（Jesus of the Scars）』という詩を書き、こう述べています

他の神々は強かった。だが、あなたは弱さを引き受けられた。彼らは悠然と進んだが、あなたはつまずきながら王座へと歩まれた。私たちの傷に語りかけることができるのは神の傷だけ。あなたのほかに、傷を持つ神は誰ひとりいない。

傷跡を持つ神は、キリスト教の神だけです。

クリスチャンの皆さん。あなたは、 弱さを引き受けられた神のために遣わされています。ですから、あなたにも弱さがあって良いのです。

クリスチャンの使命とは、あなたがどんな人間で、何ができるかということではなく、、

それは、イエス様がどのようなお方で、何を成し遂げられたかということです。

なぜなら、クリスチャンはイエス様と同じように遣わされているからです。

イエスは再び彼らに言われた。「平安があなたがたにあるように。父がわたしを遣わされたように、わたしもあなたがたを遣わします。

キリスト教の神は三位一体の神です。それは、父、子、そして聖霊です。

だからこそ、クリスチャンの使命は三位一体に基づいた構造を持っています

父なる神は、御子イエスを遣わし、

そしてイエス様は、聖霊とともにクリスチャンを遣わされます。

使命とは、キリスト教にとって基本的なものです

イエス様から使命を受けた人たちは、決して信仰的に成熟し優れたクリスチャンたちというわけではありません

19節で、ヨハネは彼らを「弟子たち」と呼んでいます。

これはおそらく使徒たちを含んでいますが、マグダラのマリアのような他の弟子たちも含まれていたと考えられます。

使命とは、正式な教育を受けた宣教師や牧師だけのものではなく、

すべての弟子に与えられたものです。

では、一般の信仰者たちは、どのようにして 、偉大な使命を成し遂げることができるでしょうか。

クリスチャンは、助けとなる存在と共に遣わされています

こう言ってから、彼らに息を吹きかけて言われた。「聖霊を受けなさい。」

旧約の時代、聖霊は、ダビデ王のような特別な指導者たちに力を与え、特別な務めを行わせました。

しかし、新約の時代には、神の民すべてが聖霊に満たされています。

聖霊がクリスチャンに力を与えてくださる特別な務めとは、恐れることなくイエス様について証しをすることです。

以前私がいた教会には、政治運動に参加している無神論者の方が来ていました。

あるとき、彼はこう言いました。「私は政治に情熱を持っているけど、あなたたちクリスチャンは次元が違います 」

彼はさらにこう言いました。

「あなたたちはまるでエナジャイザー・バニーみたいだ。イエスのために働いていて、全然疲れないんですね 」

私は彼に言いました。「それは、私たち二人ひと組で働いているからです。」

クリスチャンは、聖霊の力を受け、イエス様と同じように遣わされています。

つまり、クリスチャンは権威をもって遣わされているということでもあります

イエス様は言います。「あなたがたがだれかの罪を赦すなら、その人の罪は赦されます。赦さずに残すなら、そのまま残ります。」

キリスト教のある伝統では、自分の罪を司祭に告白するというものがあります。

司祭は、その人に「あなたは赦されています」と告げます

イエス様が言っておられるのは、こういうことではないと私は思います

聖書学者たちは、原文のギリシャ語で使われている動詞の時制から、クリスチャンが赦しを与える訳ではないと指摘しています。

神は、信じる人にはすでに赦しを与え、信じていない人には赦しを与えておられません。

ですから、クリスチャンがイエス様について語るとき、神は私たちを通して、ご自身の判断を告げておられるのです。

医者には、病気を診断し、治療薬を処方する権威があります。

同様に、クリスチャンには、罪という問題を診断し、その治療法、すなわち罪の赦しを示す権威があります。

イエス様を信じていない方も、ここに来てくださったこと心からうれしく思います

神は教、あなたに伝えたい明確なメッセージがあります

イエス様を信じれば、あなたは赦され、永遠のいのちを受けます。

しかし、もしあなたが信じないなら、あなたは赦されず、神の永遠の怒りに直面することになります。

ヨハネ3章36節 、御子を信じる者は永遠のいのちを持っているが、御子に聞き従わない者はいのちを見ることがなく、神の怒りがその上にとどまる。

空になった墓、聖霊という贈り物、そして罪の赦しを宣言する権威… なんと素晴らしいメッセージでしょう！

信じられるでしょうか？

次のポイントで、そのことについて考えてみましょう。

クリスチャンは、信頼できる証しををもって、三位一体の神によって遣わされています。 （24〜29節）

24 十二弟子の一人で、デドモと呼ばれるトマスは、イエスが来られたとき、彼らと一緒にいなかった。25 そこで、ほかの弟子たちは彼に「私たちは主を見た」と言った。しかし、トマスは彼らに「私は、その手に釘（くぎ）の跡を見て、釘の跡に指を入れ、その脇腹に手を入れてみなければ、決して信じません」と言った。

トマスは、イエス様が死からよみがえったという客観的かつ確固たる証拠を求めました

これは、ヨハネの福音書で描かれているトマスの人物像とも一致しています

トマスが登場する他の箇所でも、彼は疑い深い態度を見せています。

ヨハネの福音書11章では、イエス様が死にかけているラザロを助けるため、危険を承知で助けに行こうと決断されたとき、トマスは皮肉を言います……。

「私たちも行って、主と一緒に死のうではないか。」

つまり、「イエス様の計画に従うと、自分たちも命を落とすぞ」という意味です

ヨハネの福音書は、トマスのように、イエス様について疑問を持つ人たちのために書かれたものです。

もしあなたが「疑い深いトマス」のような人なら……

例えば「宗教って怖いし、キリスト教っておとぎ話みたい……」と感じているなら

ここに励ましの言葉があります。 ２６節

26 八日後、弟子たちは再び家の中におり、トマスも彼らと一緒にいた。戸には鍵がかけられていたが、イエスがやって来て、彼らの真ん中に立ち、「平安があなたがたにあるように」と言われた。27 それから、トマスに言われた。「あなたの指をここに当てて、わたしの手を見なさい。手を伸ばして、わたしの脇腹に入れなさい。信じない者ではなく、信じる者になりなさい。」

疑いを抱く者に対する、キリストの驚くべき憐れみに注目してください。

イエス様は、臆病になっていた弟子たちを責めなかった、そして、疑っていたトマスのことも責めることはありません

キリスト教について、あなたは疑問や迷いがありますか？

「本当に全部、真実なのだろうか？」と思うことはありますか？

良い知らせです。イエス様は、あなたの疑問を恐れてはいません。

イエス様は、証拠を求めることを否定されません。

かつては無神論者だった私が、学んだことがあります。

キリスト教の信仰を徹底的に調べても、それは決して揺らぐことはありません。

これまでの年月の中で、福音に対して私が抱いていた大きな疑問には、すべて答えが与えられました

トマスが見たような驚くべきものを、イエス様があなたにも示してくださるとは、私には約束できません。

でも、確かに言えるのは、もしあなたが、信じる理由を求めて、心からイエス様のもとに行くなら、イエス様はその理由を与えてくださいます。

「神様、もしイエス様の復活が本当なら、どうか私にそれを示してください。」

28 トマスはイエスに答えた。「私の主、私の神よ。」29 イエスは彼に言われた。「あなたはわたしを見たから信じたのですか。見ないで信じる人たちは幸いです。」

疑い深かったトマスは、聖書の中で最も大胆なイエス様への信仰告白をしました

そしてヨハネの福音書の終盤、20章28節には、冒頭の言葉と対応するものとして 、イエス様を神と告白する言葉が出てきます。」

「世間には、イエス様は隣人を愛することを教えた、ただの善良な教師だったという意見があります。」

そして、時がたつにつれ、弟子たちは行き過ぎてしまい、イエス様を神としてしまった、という考え方です

しかし、ヨハネの福音書を信じるなら、トマスは早い段階でイエス様を神だと告白しており……それは復活の直後、紀元33年ごろです

さらに、イエス様について書かれた2番目に古い非キリスト教文書にも、初期のクリスチャンがイエス様を神として礼拝していたことが記されています。

ここで、紀元110年に、クリスチャンではなかった小プリニウスが ローマ皇帝トラヤヌスに宛てて書いた言葉を見てみましょう。」

［クリスチャンたちは］「夜明け前の決まった日に集まり、神様を礼拝するようにキリストを礼拝し、賛美の歌を交互に歌っていた。」

教会に古くから伝わる確かな記録によれば トマスは紀元52年、福音を南インドのケララへ伝え、紀元72年に殉教（じゅんきょう）しました。

そして現在、インドの聖トマス・クリスチャンの人たちは、自分たちはトマスによって最初にキリスト教へ導かれた人々の子孫であると主張しています

かつては疑い深かったトマスは、最も大胆な信仰告白をしただけでなく、他のどの使徒よりも遠くまで福音を伝えた可能性があります

ここから何を学ぶことができるでしょうか？

神は時に最も疑い深い人に、最も深い信仰を与えてくださいます。

皆さんの中には、『私にはとても信じられない……』と 思う方もいるかもしれません

でも、もしかしたら、いつの日か、ここにいる私たちの誰よりも、あなたが神様のために多くの働きをするかもしれません！

なぜなら、エペソ人への手紙2章8節にも書いてますが、信仰は神からの贈り物だからです.

エペソ人への手紙 2:8

8 この恵みのゆえに、あなたがたは信仰によって救われたのです。それはあなたがたから出たことではなく、神の賜物です。9 行いによるのではありません。だれも誇ることのないためです。

頑なで疑い深い人も神を信じるようになる、『それは、神にしかできないこと！』であり、すべての栄光は神にあります

TikTokで アレックスのタロット占いという名で活動していたスコットランドの女性には、100万人ものフォロワーがいました

タロットカードの販売や占いで、彼女は多額の収入を得ていました

彼女は、TikTokで、魔術を発信する『Witch-tok』の主要メンバーの一人でもありました

しかし、彼女は最近イエス様への信仰に導かれ、これまでのコンテンツをすべて削除して、店も閉じました

彼女がキリストへの信仰を告白したとき、人々は本当に驚き、また、そのことに対する怒りや反発が広まりました

まさか彼女がイエス様を信じるようになるなんて、誰も思いませんでした

しかし、信仰は、人の行いによって得られるものではなく、神から与えられる贈り物なんです

『絶対に信じない』と思っている人も、イエス様が神であると告白するようになる 、これが、ヨハネが福音書を書いた目的でした

そして、ここで最後のポイントに入ります

信仰者は、三位一体の神によって遣わされ、イエス様の御名にあるいのちについて、信頼できる証を携えています 。

30 イエスは弟子たちの前で、ほかにも多くのしるしを行われたが、それらはこの書には書かれていない。31 これらのことが書かれたのは、イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなたがたが信じるためであり、また信じて、イエスの名によっていのちを得るためである。

ここには、ヨハネの福音書の主要なテーマがすべて含まれています。

「イエス様の7つのしるし（奇跡）」は、―イエス様がキリスト、つまりユダヤ人が待ち望んでいたメシアであることを証しするものである

「信じる」――この言葉、ヨハネは98回も使っています

「神の子」――つまり、イエス様は人となってこの世に来られた、唯一まことの神である

「イエス様の御名によって与えられるいのち」――つまり、来るべき世で与えられる永遠のいのちと、この世で与えられる新しいいのちのことです

イエス様が神の御子だと信じることは、単なる抽象的な神学上の考え方ではなく、

それは、あなたの人生のすべてを変えるもので、私たちの教会は、今年、そのことを実際に見てきました。

私たちは2025年12月に、『Why Jesus（なぜイエスなのか）』と題して、ヨハネの福音書のシリーズを始めました。

それ以来、私たちは神がこの福音書の目的を成し遂げてくださるのを見てきたのですが、その目的とは あなたがたが信じることです

このシリーズを始めてからの38週間で……

私たちの教会では、4人が洗礼を受けました。

２人の方がこの教会でイエス様を信じるようになりました。

皆さん 、神様の働きは、まだ始まったばかりです

ヨハネの福音書を通して、イエス様について何を学んできたか、考えてみましょう

こちらは、聖書を教えているある方が、まとめてくださったものです

飢えを感じるすべての人に、イエス様は言われます。『わたしはいのちのパンです。』

渇いているすべての人に、イエス様は言われます。『わたしは生ける水です。』

暗闇を歩んでいるすべての人に、イエス様は言われます。『わたしは光です。』

人生でつまずき、もう一度やり直したいとうすべての人に、イエス様は言われます。『大丈夫。わたしは門です」

もし自分は見捨てられたと感じているなら、イエス様はあなたの良い羊飼いです。

もしあなたが行き先を見失っているのなら、イエス様が道です。

もしあなたが混乱しているのなら 、イエス様こそが真理です

もしあなたが死を恐れているなら、イエス様は言われます 「大丈夫。わたしはよみがえりです。いのちです。 」

もしあなたがイエス様を知っているなら、このリストを聞いて、2つのことが起こったはずです

1つ目は、心が動かされ、神を礼拝したくなったことです

「2つ目は、『ほかの人にも、この素晴らしい体験をしてほしい』と思ったことです

日本にいる人の99％は、私たちがヨハネの福音書で学んできたイエス様のことを、まったく知りません。

その現状を変える働きに、あなたも加わりませんか？

一緒に考えてみましょう。

ヨハネの福音書も、来週8月23日で最後の週を迎えます。

そして8月30日には、私たち教会の1周年をお祝いします……なんとケーキつきで！！！

3週間にわたって、『福岡に生きる教会』というシリーズを始める予定です。ここでは私たちの教会が大切にしていること、そしてこれからのビジョンについてお話しします。

この場にいる一人ひとりに、まだイエス様を信じていない人も含め 、イエス様への深く揺るぎない信仰をお与えください

Our church uses First Steps to introduce Christianity to people who aren't Christians but wanna learn more.

Halfway through, there's a set of questions that check in on where they're at spiritually.

Over the years of studying this content with people, one question has always stood out.

Do you believe that Jesus rose from the dead?

People who said "yes" to all the other questions often say "no" to this one.

And if people do say "yes" to this question… I always confirm, like: "are you sure?"

This question is critical for discerning if someone has saving faith.

Romans 10:9 says "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

But the resurrection isn't only "make or break" for personal faith… it's "make or break" for the entire Christian faith.

1 Corinthians 15 says that if Christ didn't rise from the dead, Christianity isn’t true.

But… if Jesus did rise from the dead, Christianity is true and you have to accept everything Jesus taught.

Picture a series of dominoes that gradually increase in size.

Believing in Jesus' resurrection is like kicking that first small domino.

Believe in the resurrection… and everything else will follow.

If you believe in the resurrection… your job is to persuade people to kick over that first domino.

In our text, John 20, those who saw the resurrected Jesus are given a mission to bear witness to it.

The resurrection is the foundation of all Christian mission.

So today let's talk about what Jesus' resurrection means for Christian mission.

The resurrection means believers are sent by the Triune God with a trustworthy testimony of life in Jesus' name.

Looking at John 20, let's break down that sentence into three parts.

If you believe Jesus rose from the dead, you are…

Sent by the Triune God… (v19-23)

When Jesus died, almost all his inner circle of disciples abandoned him.

But now, three days later, Jesus has risen from the dead.

Jesus appears to them for the first time.

v19… 19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

This is the ultimate chance to say “I told you so.”

…but Jesus doesn’t take it.

Instead of rehearsing their failures… Jesus says “peace be with you.”

Far from being bitter, Jesus wants them to understand what his death has accomplished… peace.

Jesus died to bring us true peace.

Our sin has made us enemies of God.

But on the cross, Jesus took God’s wrath against sin.

And now, if you believe in Jesus, you have peace with God.

The gospel brings peace to your heart that comes from having peace with God.

This message the risen Christ brings separates Christianity from every other religion… v20.

20 When he [Jesus] had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

How wild is it that the resurrected, glorified Christ still has scars on his hands and his side?

In other religions, the gods are far off and unconcerned with human suffering.

The other gods say “live the right way… and I might save you.”

The Christian God is totally different.

He says, “you haven’t lived the right way…but I’m gonna save you anyway.”

The Christian God is so concerned with human suffering that in the person of Christ… he was willing to come and suffer himself.

This truth is what helped a World War I veteran named Edward Shilito deal with his PTSD.

He wrote a poem called “Jesus of the Scars”, where he said this.

The other gods were strong; but you were weak; They rode, but you stumbled to a throne; But to our wounds only God’s wounds can speak; And no other god has wounds, but you alone.

Only the Christian God has scars.

Christian… you're on mission for a God who became weak, so it's ok if you're weak too.

Christian mission is not about who you are and what you can do.

It's about who Jesus is and what he has done…

Because Christians are sent like Jesus, v21.

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

The Christian God is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Which is why Christian mission has a Trinitarian shape.

The Father sends Jesus the Son.

Jesus sends Christians with the Holy Spirit.

Mission is basic to Christianity.

The people receiving this commission from Jesus aren’t advanced and mature Christians.

In v19, John just calls them “the disciples.”

This probably includes the apostles, but also others like Mary Magdalene.

Mission is not just for missionaries or pastors with formal education.

Mission is for every disciple.

So how can ordinary believers accomplish such an extra-ordinary mission?

Because Christians are sent with a Helper… v22.

22 And when he had said this, he [Jesus] breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

In the Old Covenant, the Holy Spirit empowered special leaders like King David to do special tasks.

But in the New Covenant, all God’s people are filled with the Holy Spirit.

The special task the Holy Spirit empowers Christians for… is boldly bearing witness to Jesus.

At a previous church, an atheist involved in political activism was attending.

He told me one time… “I’m passionate about politics but you Christians are next level.”

He said “you guys are like the energizer bunny… you never get tired of working for Jesus.”

I said to him, “that’s because there’s two of us working.”

Christians are empowered by the Spirit and sent like Jesus…

Which also means Christians are sent with authority… v23.

Jesus says: 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

In some Christian traditions, people confess their sins to a priest.

And the priest tells them “you are forgiven.”

I don't think this is what Jesus is saying.

Bible scholars point out that the tense of the verbs in the original Greek suggests Christians aren't the ones forgiving.

God has already forgiven or not forgiven people based on whether they believe.

And so when Christians speak the message about Jesus, God is speaking his verdict through us.

A doctor has authority to diagnose a disease and prescribe a cure.

Likewise Christians have authority to diagnose the problem of sin and prescribe the cure: forgiveness of sins.

If you don’t believe in Jesus, we’re so glad you’re here.

God has a clear message for you this morning.

Believe in Jesus, and you will be forgiven and receive eternal life.

But if you do not believe, you are not forgiven and will face the eternal wrath of God.

As John 3:36 says… 36 Whoever believes in the Son [Jesus] has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

An empty tomb, the gift of the Holy Spirit, authority to proclaim forgiveness… What an amazing message!

Can we believe it?

Let’s consider that in our next point.

Christians are sent by the Triune God…with a trustworthy testimony (v24-29)

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Thomas wants cold, hard proof that Jesus rose from the dead.

This tracks with the character arc of Thomas in the Gospel of John.

John’s other mentions of Thomas involve some sort of skepticism.

For example in John 11, when Jesus makes the risky decision to go help the dying Lazarus, Thomas makes this sarcastic comment…

“Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Essentially… “Jesus' plan is gonna get us killed.”

John wrote his Gospel for those who, like Thomas… are inclined to question Jesus.

So if you're a “doubting Thomas”…

…like “religion is scary, Christianity feels like a fairy tale…”

…there’s encouragement for you… v26.

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”

Note the incredible mercy of Christ to those who doubt.

Jesus didn’t rebuke his cowardly disciples… and he doesn’t rebuke doubting Thomas either.

Do you have doubts and questions about Christianity?

Like “is it really all true?”

Good news: Jesus is not afraid of your questions.

Jesus is not anti-evidence.

As a former atheist myself… here’s something I’ve learned.

Whatever scrutiny you give the Christian faith, it will stand up to it.

Over the years, all my deepest objections to the gospel have been answered.

I can’t promise Jesus will show you something as amazing as what Thomas saw.

But I can say… if you sincerely go to Jesus for reasons to believe he will give them to you.

You can pray this week “God if the resurrection of Jesus is true, please show me.”

Not only that, you can study the historical case for Jesus’ resurrection.

Now, get ready for one of the quickest character shifts in the Bible… v28.

28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Doubting Thomas makes the single boldest confession of faith in Jesus in the entire Bible: “My Lord and my God!”

In the Bible, whenever people try to worship a human or an angel, the response is always “you must not do that. Worship God.”

But when Thomas says to Jesus “My Lord and my God!”, Jesus is basically like “it's about time!”

In the first verse of his Gospel, John tells us Jesus (the Word) is God.

John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Now in John 20:28, near the end of his Gospel, we get the bookend: the first confession of Jesus as God.

There's this idea out there that Jesus started out as just a good teacher, all about loving your neighbor.

But then, over time, his disciples got carried away and turned him into God.

But if we trust John's Gospel, Thomas confesses Jesus as God early… right after the resurrection, around 33 AD.

And outside the Bible, the second oldest non-Christian writing about Jesus says the earliest Christians worshiped him as God.

Listen to what Pliny the Younger, not a Christian, wrote to the Roman emperor Trajan in 110 AD.

He writes that [Christians] “…were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god.”

According to reliable church tradition, Thomas took the gospel to Kerala in South India, in 52 AD, and was martyred in 72 AD.

And today, the St. Thomas Christians in India, claim descent from his original converts.

The (once) doubting Thomas not only made the boldest confession of faith, but it's possible he took the gospel further than any other apostle.

What do we learn from this?

Sometimes God gives the deepest faith to those who are most naturally doubtful.

You might say this morning… “I could never believe…”

But watch out…maybe one day you will do more for God than any one of us in this room!

Because as Ephesians 2:8 says… faith is the gift of God.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this [that is, faith] is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

When the most hardened skeptic believes… God gets all the glory… like “only God could do that!”

A woman from Scotland, who went by Alex Reads Tarot had 1 million followers on TikTok.

She made a lotta money selling tarot cards and doing readings.

She was one of the leaders of “Witch-tok”, a group promoting witchcraft on TikTok.

However, she recently came to faith in Jesus, deleted all her content, and closed her store.

When she announced her conversion to Christ people were absolutely blown away… and the angry outrage went viral.

No one woulda thought she would come to faith in Jesus.

But faith is the gift of God, not a result of works.

And this is the entire reason John wrote his gospel… so that the most convinced unbelievers would confess Jesus as God.

Which brings us to our final point.

Believers are sent by the Triune God with a trustworthy testimony...of life in Jesus’ name (v30-31).

v30, John writes, 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Here in this purpose statement, we find all the main themes of John’s Gospel.

The seven signs (or miracles) of Jesus which testify that he’s the Christ, the Jewish Messiah.

Believe, a verb John uses 98 times.

The Son of God… that is, Jesus is the One True God in human flesh.

Life in Jesus’ name, that is eternal life in the world to come and new life in this world.

Believing Jesus is the Son of God isn't some abstract theological opinion.

It changes everything about your life… our church has seen it firsthand this year.

We started this series on the Gospel of John (Why Jesus) in December 2025.

Since then, we’ve seen God fulfill the purpose of this book… that you may believe.

During the past 38 weeks of this series…

Our church celebrated 4 baptisms.

2 people came to faith at this church.

And listen… God is just getting started.

Think about all we’ve learned about Jesus so far in the Gospel of John.

Here’s a summary I got from another Bible teacher.

To anyone who’s hungry… Jesus says “I am the Bread of Life.”

To anyone who’s thirsty… Jesus says “I am Living Water.”

To anyone walking in darkness… Jesus says “I am the Light.”

To anyone who’s messed up… they need a fresh start… Jesus says “that’s ok I’m the Door.”

If you feel abandoned… Jesus is the Good Shepherd.

If you feel lost… Jesus is the Way.

If you feel confused… Jesus is the Truth.

If you’re scared of death… Jesus declares, "It's gonna be alright because I am the Resurrection and the Life.”

If you know Jesus, two things happened as you heard that list.

One, your heart was moved to worship.

Two, you thought “I want others to experience this too.”

99% of people in Japan know nothing about the Jesus we’ve studied in the Gospel of John.

Heavenly Father, may our entire city find hope in the resurrection of your Son, the Lord Jesus.

Empower us your people to boldly bear witness to Jesus’ resurrection.

Grant every person in this room a deep and abiding faith in Jesus, including those you do not yet believe.

We ask these things in Jesus' name.
