復活③：私に従いなさい | Resurrection III: Follow Me ヨハネの福音書 21章 John 21

コンラート・アデナウアーは、第二次世界大戦後の西ドイツで初代連邦首相を務めた人物でした。

彼はドイツの復興に力を尽くし、急速な経済成長へと導きました。

また、長年の敵国であったフランスなどとの和解を進めました。

そして、ホロコーストの悲惨な出来事にも向き合い、その犠牲者に賠償を支払いました。

1960年代、アデナウアーは有名なクリスチャンの伝道者であるビリー・グラハムとコーヒーを飲みながら話をしました。

その時のことを、グラハムはこのように語っています。

挨拶を交わした後、首相は突然私のほうを向いて、こう尋ねました。「グラハムさん、この世界で最も大切なことは何でしょうか？」

私が答える前に、彼は自分でその質問に答えました。「イエス・キリストの復活です。もしイエス・キリストが生きておられるなら、この世界には希望があります。しかし、もしイエス・キリストがまだ墓の中にいるのなら、私はこの先に希望の光をほんの少しも見ることができません。」　

ホロコースト後のドイツを復興へと導いた人物が、「イエス様の復活こそが、この世界にとって唯一の希望である。」と言ったのです。

皆さんの中には「イエスが死から復活したことが、どうしてそんなに重要なのか？」と思っている方もいるかもしれません。

今日はヨハネの福音書21章を見て、その問いについて一緒に考えていきましょう。

ヨハネの福音書21章では、復活後のイエス様が弟子たちの前に現れます。

今日の箇所から、イエス様の復活が私たちにとってどのような意味を持つのか、5つのことを考えていきます。on slide: 復活が私たちにとって意味する５つのこと

まず一つ目... 復活は、 ①私たちが自分の罪を抱えたままでも、イエス様のもとへ駆け寄って行けることを意味します。（1〜8節）

1 その後、イエスはティベリア湖畔（ガリラヤ湖）で、再び弟子たちにご自分を現された。現された次第はこうであった。 2 シモン・ペテロ、デドモと呼ばれるトマス、ガリラヤのカナ出身のナタナエル、ゼベダイの子たち、そして、ほかに二人の弟子が同じところにいた。

ペテロ、トマス、ナタナエルは、いわば「ちょっと一癖ある」弟子たちです。

トマスとナタナエルは、かつてイエス様のことを深く疑っていました。

また、ペテロはイエス様が十字架にかかられる直前に、イエス様を否定しました。

ゼベダイの子たちとは、ヤコブとヨハネのことで、この福音書を書いたのがそのヨハネです。

ヨハネの福音書21章の出来事は、イースターにイエス様が復活されてから、ペンテコステに聖霊が注がれるまでの40日間の間に起こったものです。

しかし、イエス様から次の指示を受けるまでは……ちゃんと生活をしていかなければなりません。

3節を見てみましょう。

3 シモン・ペテロが彼らに「私は漁に行く」と言った。すると、彼らは「私たちも一緒に行く」と言った。彼らは出て行って、小舟に乗り込んだが、その夜は何も捕れなかった。4 夜が明け始めていたころ、イエスは岸辺に立たれた。けれども弟子たちには、イエスであることが分からなかった。 5イエスは彼らに言われた。「子どもたちよ、食べる魚がありませんね。」彼らは答えた。「ありません。」6 イエスは彼らに言われた。「舟の右側に網を打ちなさい。そうすれば捕れます。」そこで、彼らは網を打った。すると、おびただしい数の魚のために、もはや彼らには網を引き上げることができなかった。

イエス様が突然現れ、信じられないほど大量の魚を獲れるように弟子たちを助けてくださいました。

これは、イエス様がペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネを初めて弟子として召された、ルカの福音書5章の出来事を思い起こさせます。

8 これを見たシモン・ペテロは、イエスの足もとにひれ伏して言った。「主よ、私から離れてください。私は罪深い人間ですから。」 9 彼も、一緒にいた者たちもみな、自分たちが捕った魚のことで驚いたのであった。 10 シモンの仲間の、ゼベダイの子ヤコブやヨハネも同じであった。イエスはシモンに言われた。「恐れることはない。今から後、あなたは人間を捕るようになるのです。」

イエス様の偉大さが、ペテロ自身の罪深さを明らかにします。

そしてペテロは、「主よ、私から離れてください。私は罪深い人間ですから。」と、自分自身の正しさに絶望します。

しかしその後、ペテロはキリストから、「恐れることはない。今から後、あなたは人間を捕るようになる」と慰めに満ちた言葉を聞きます。

なぜなら、救いの物語は、全てここから始まるからです。

「私はどうしようもない罪人だけど、キリストは素晴らしい救い主。」

ペテロは最初の日から、自分にとって唯一の希望が、キリストのあわれみであることを知っていたのです。

だからこそ、7節でペテロがイエス様を見たときにとった反応にも納得できます。

7 それで、イエスが愛されたあの弟子が、ペテロに「主だ」と言った。シモン・ペテロは「主だ」と聞くと、裸に近かったので上着をまとい、湖に飛び込んだ。8 一方、ほかの弟子たちは、魚の入った網を引いて小舟で戻って行った。陸地から遠くなく、二百ペキスほどの距離だったからである。

この描写が、とても面白いなと思うのですが、

ペテロは、イエス様だと聞くと、ためらうことなく水に飛び込みます。

一方8節で、ほかの弟子たちは....小舟で戻って行ったとあります。

この時点では、ペテロがイエス様を裏切ったことについては、まだ何も解決されていません。

それでも、ペテロはまっすぐイエス様のもとへと走って行きます。

どうしてペテロは、イエス様を恐れなかったのでしょうか？

それは、3年間イエス様に従う中で、ペテロがある大切な感覚を身につけたからです。

罪を犯したとき、イエス様から逃げるのではなく、イエス様のもとへ走って行くということです！

デイン・オートランドは『わたしは心が柔和でへりくだっているから』という本の中で、「クリスチャン生活は、突き詰めれば2つのステップに集約される。」と語っています。

ステップ1：イエス様のもとへ行く。

ステップ2：ステップ1を繰り返す。

今朝皆さんがどんな思いで教会に来ていたとしても、イエス様はあなたがご自分のもとへ来ることを心から望んでおられます。

自分の罪ゆえに、自分自身を嫌ってしまうでしょうか？

イエス様は、打たれ砕かれた心を下げすまれません。

高慢になって神様に逆らってしまったでしょうか？

イエス様は、自分のはかりごとを捨てて神に立ち返る悪しき者を、豊かに赦してくださるお方です。

福音の良い知らせは...

計り知れないあわれみを受けるために、私たちにできることは、イエス様のもとへ行くことだけということです。

そして、2つ目のポイントとして、福音には無料の朝ごはんまで付いてきます。

イエス様の復活は、私たちにとってどんな意味があるのでしょうか？

復活は、来るべき世でのいのちを楽しみに待つことができるということを意味します。（9〜12節）

9 こうして彼らが陸地に上がると、そこには炭火がおこされていて、その上には魚があり、またパンがあるのが見えた。10 イエスは彼らに「今捕った魚を何匹か持って来なさい」と言われた。11 シモン・ペテロは舟に乗って、網を陸地に引き上げた。網は百五十三匹の大きな魚でいっぱいであった。それほど多かったのに、網は破れていなかった。12a イエスは彼らに言われた。「さあ、朝の食事をしなさい。」

「さあ、朝の食事をしなさい。」……新しい人生の聖句にしたいですね！

イエス様と一緒に、海辺で朝食を食べること以上に素晴らしいことがあるでしょうか？

2018年、私はちょっとした人生の危機を経験していました。

朝起きてから夜眠りにつくまで、ずっと不安にさいなまれてました。

そんな時期のある晩、教会の友達を何人か家に招きました。

みんなで楽しく話をしながら、美味しい食卓を囲みました。

その後、私は、不思議なことに心が軽くなっていました。

何か月もの間、不安なことをぐるぐる考え続けていたのに、その時は初めてそれを考えずに過ごせたと気づいたんです。

もし、この嬉しい感覚が永遠に続いたらどうでしょう？

大好きな人たちと、美味しい朝食を、美しい場所で食べる。

平安と楽しみと、愛する人たちとの交わりが、永遠に続く。

人が心の奥で求めているこの願いを福音は満たしてくれます。

朝食のジョークはさておき……9〜12節には、神学的にとても重要なことがたくさん書かれています。

先週、ヨハネの福音書20章から、復活されたイエス様は触れることができるということを学びました。

そして今日の21章では、復活されたイエス様は食べることもできるということが分かります！

コリント人への手紙第一15章20節には、こう書かれています。しかし、今やキリストは、眠った者の初穂として死者の中からよみがえられました。

この箇所が意味しているのは、復活されたイエス様について真実であることが、いつか私たちが復活するときにも私たちに当てはまるということです。

イエス様が肉体をもって復活されたのならば、天国もまた、肉体を伴う現実の世界だということです。

イエス様が、ご自分を愛する者のために備えてくださっている新しい世界では、

食べたり、飲んだり

抱きしめたり、抱きしめられたり

また、イエス様やイエス様の民と共に笑い、交わりを楽しむことができます。

天国とは、神の幕屋が人々とともにあることです。

天国とは、人となられた神様（イエス様）が、ご自分の民と共に海辺で朝ごはんを食べてくださることなのです。

だからこそ、昔のニカイア信条は、この素晴らしい一文で締めくくられています。

死者の復活と、来るべき世のいのちを待ち望みます。アーメン。

私たちの世界には、この希望が必要です。でも、人はその希望を、間違った場所に求めてしまっています。

ChatGPTを生み出した会社のCEOサム・アルトマンは、自分が不死身になるために、自分の脳をデジタル化しようと考えています。

彼は、人間の脳を保存してクラウド上にアップロードしようとしているスタートアップ企業のウェイティングリストにも登録されています。

ただ、一つ問題があります。そのプロセスには100％、死が伴います。

テクノロジーは、偽物でデジタルの天国を手に入れるためには、あなたに死ぬことを求めます。

しかし、イエス様は、私たちが本物の天国を得られるように、すでに死んでくださったのです。

そしてイエス様の素晴らしいところは、私たちに食事を与えてくださるだけではなく、私たちを回復してくださることです。

三つ目に復活は、③私たちが神様に対して失敗したときにも、もう一度やり直すことができるということを意味します。（15〜17節）

ヨハネの福音書21章9節を見ると、海辺での朝食の場には、炭火があったとあります。

これは偶然ではないのです。

イエス様は、ヨハネの福音書18章18節で、ペテロが炭火のそばに座ってイエス様を否定した出来事を思い出させているのです。

ある注解者は、こう書いています。「イエス様は、この炭火のそばで起きたこと（ヨハネ21:9）によって、あの別の炭火のそばで起きたこと（ヨハネ18:18）を覆そうとしている。」

最初の炭火のそばで、ペテロはイエス様を3度否定しました。

二つ目の炭火のそばでは、イエス様はペテロに、3度、イエス様への愛を告白するよう招かれます。

15 彼らが食事を済ませたとき、イエスはシモン・ペテロに言われた。「ヨハネの子シモン。あなたは、この人たちが愛する以上に、わたしを愛していますか。」ペテロは答えた。「はい、主よ。私があなたを愛していることは、あなたがご存じです。」イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしの子羊を飼いなさい。」16 イエスは再び彼に「ヨハネの子シモン。あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われた。ペテロは答えた。「はい、主よ。私があなたを愛していることは、あなたがご存じです。」イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしの羊を牧しなさい。」17 イエスは三度目もペテロに、「ヨハネの子シモン。あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われた。ペテロは、イエスが三度目も「あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われたので、心を痛めてイエスに言った。「主よ、あなたはすべてをご存じです。あなたは、私があなたを愛していることを知っておられます。」イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしの羊を飼いなさい。

「キリストの羊を飼う」というのは、牧師が教え、羊を牧する働きを指しています。

つまり、イエス様がペテロを回復されたというのは、単にペテロを一般的な意味で回復されたということではなく、ペテロを再び牧会の働きへと回復されたということなのです。

なぜこれほど多くのクリスチャンのリーダーが、取り返しのつかないような深刻な道徳的失敗をしてしまうのでしょうか？

もしかしたら……私たちが「失敗した牧師や教会のリーダーが、もう一度奉仕に戻る」ということを考える余地を持っていないからではないでしょうか。

もちろん、姦淫、虐待、窃盗、暴力など、リーダーとして復帰するべきではない罪もあります。

そのような罪を犯した人は、赦されますが、二度と牧会の働きに戻るべきではないかもしれません。

しかし、私たちは、「牧師や教会のリーダーは完全でなければならない。そうでなければ失格だ」という考えを持ってしまいがちです。

そのため、クリスチャンのリーダーが罪と葛藤しているとき、その罪を隠そうとする傾向が強くなります。

自分の貪欲さや性的な欲望について告白しないまま、その罪は暗闇の中でどんどん大きくなっていきます。

そしてある日……牧師が愛人と一緒に、教会のお金を持って逃げてしまい、みんなが驚く、みたいなことが起こるのです。

しかし、もし私たちが教会のリーダーたちを、「完全さの模範」ではなく、「悔い改めの模範」として見るようになったらどうでしょうか？

ペテロのように、教会のリーダーが失敗しても、悔い改めるなら、それ自体が力強い証しになるのではないでしょうか。

つい先日、あるイスラム教徒の男性がイエス様を信じるようになったという話を聞きました。

彼が信じるようになった理由の一つは、聖書が、その重要なリーダーたちの失敗を恥ずかしげもなく記録していることでした。

聖書は、アブラハム、ダビデ、パウロ、ペテロの罪を隠そうとはしません。

それを見て、彼は「聖書は本当に真実なのだ」と確信しました。なぜなら、聖書は人間のリーダーたちを称賛するために書かれたものではないからです。

ペテロは、再び牧会の働きへと回復されました。

しかし、ペテロが回復されたその働きは、彼にすべてを捨てることを求める働きでもありました。

復活は、④私たちがすべてを捨てて、イエス様に従うことができるということを意味します。（18〜22節）

イエス様はペテロにこのように語りかけます。18まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。あなたは若いときには、自分で帯をして、自分の望むところを歩きました。しかし年をとると、あなたは両手を伸ばし、ほかの人があなたに帯をして、望まないところに連れて行きます。」19イエスは、ペテロがどのような死に方で神の栄光を現すかを示すために、こう言われたのである。こう話してから、ペテロに言われた。「わたしに従いなさい。」

「あなたは両手を伸ばし」という表現は、十字架刑を指しています。

イエス様はペテロに、福音を宣べ伝え、そして福音のために死ぬことをお求めになりました。

福音を宣べ伝える者にとって、殉教というのは最高の宣べ伝え方なのです。

これは、イギリス宗教改革の時代に、ローマ・カトリック当局によって信仰のために火刑で処されたプロテスタントのジョン・ロジャーズにも当てはまります。

彼は柱に縛りつけられたとき、こう言いました。

「私がこれまで宣べ伝えてきたことを、私は自分の血をもって証しします。」

私たちが、信仰のために殺されることは、おそらくないと思います。

でも私たちは、ごく普通のクリスチャンとして自分の意志に対する死を通して、神様に栄光を帰すことができます。

若い頃、私は何か大きなことを成し遂げて、影響を与えたいと思っていました。

でも今は、ただ最後まで忠実に走り切りたいと願っています。

私がよく祈っている祈りがあります。それは「妻を愛し、罪を憎み、イエス様を信じ続けながら、人生を終えたい。」というものです。

イエス様は、これからペテロに求めることが、決して簡単ではないとご存じでした。

だからこそ、19節にはこのように書かれているのです。

こう話してから、（イエスは）ペテロに言われた。「わたしに従いなさい。」

これをすべて聞いたペテロは、おそらく、「自分だけ不公平な扱いを受けているんじゃないか？」と思ったのではないでしょうか。

20節を見てみましょう。

20 ペテロは振り向いて、イエスが愛された弟子（ヨハネ）がついて来るのを見た。この弟子は、夕食の席でイエスの胸元に寄りかかり、「主よ、あなたを裏切るのはだれですか」と言った者である。21 ペテロは彼を見て、「主よ、この人はどうなのですか」とイエスに言った。22 イエスはペテロに言われた。「わたしが来るときまで彼が生きるように、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたに何の関わりがありますか。あなたは、わたしに従いなさい。」

ある意味では、クリスチャンとして生きること、そして教会で奉仕することは、他の人を深く思いやることです。

「あなたがわたしを愛しているならば、わたしの羊を飼いなさい！」

しかし、また別の意味では、他の人のことを気にしないことでもあります。

あなたに何の関わりがありますか。あなたは、わたしに従いなさい。

「人と比べることは喜びを奪うもの」と言われています。

では、もし人と比べる代わりに、それぞれに与えられた、異なる賜物や召しを喜ぶとしたらどうでしょうか？

ペテロは情熱的で、衝動的な人だった一方で、ヨハネはより落ち着いていて、物事をよく見極める人でした。

ペテロは、壮絶な死を遂げることによって、一方、ヨハネは、穏やかな人生を生きることによって神様に栄光を帰しました。

この場所にいるクリスチャンの中で、まったく同じ召しや賜物を持っている人は誰一人としていないし、それでいいのです！

だから、神様を妬んだり、不満を抱いたりするのではなく、神様の知恵に身をゆだね、神様が自分にしか託しておられないものに目を向けることができるのです。

ヨハネは、長い人生の中で、教会を導き、聖書の中の4つの書物を書き記しました。

ここから最後のポイントで考えていきましょう。

イエス様の復活は、私たちにとってどんな意味があるのでしょうか？

最後に、これは⑤ヨハネが語るイエス様についての証言を信頼できるということを意味します。（23〜25節）

23それで、その弟子（ヨハネ）は死なないという話が兄弟たちの間に広まった。しかし、イエスはペテロに、その弟子は死なないと言われたのではなく、「わたしが来るときまで彼が生きるように、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたに何の関わりがありますか」と言われたのである。24 これらのことについて証しし、これらのことを書いた者は、その弟子である。私たちは、彼の証しが真実であることを知っている。

ヨハネがこの福音書を書いた時、彼はおそらく70代だったと考えられています。

ヨハネは、復活されたキリストを直接見た最後の生きている証人だった可能性があったからこそ、自分が見聞きしたことである彼の証しを書き残しておく必要がありました。

しかし、23節を見ると、ヨハネがこの福音書を書いた理由には、もう一つ牧会的な意図があったことがわかります。

当時、「イエスが戻って来られるまで、ヨハネは生き続ける」という噂が広まっていたのです。

でも、これは真実ではなかったので、ヨハネは、自分が死ぬ前にこの誤解を解こうと書き続けました。

これらのことをヨハネが書いたのは、イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなたがたが信じるためであり、また信じて、イエスの名によっていのちを得るためでありました。

ヨハネは、書き記す内容をかなり絞る必要がありました。

25節です。

25イエスが行われたことは、ほかにもたくさんある。その一つ一つを書き記すなら、世界もその書かれた書物を収められないと、私は思う。

聖書の目的は、私たちが知り得るすべてのことを教えることではなく、救いへの道を示すことです。

また、私たちを「聖書オタク」にするためではなく、イエス様に従う者にするために書かれたものです。

このメッセージシリーズを終えるにあたって、まだクリスチャンでない方々にお伝えしたいことがあります。

ヨハネの福音書3章16節に要約される人生を変えるイエス・キリストの良い知らせ（福音）をぜひ信じてみてください。

16 神は、実に、そのひとり子（イエス）をお与えになったほどに世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、一人として滅びることなく、永遠のいのちを持つためである。

Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of West Germany after World War II.

He helped rebuild Germany, leading it through rapid economic growth.

He reconciled with long-time enemies like France.

And he confronted the horrors of the Holocaust, paying reparations to its victims.

In the 1960s, Adenauer had coffee with the famous Christian preacher Billy Graham.

Listen to how Graham recounted that meeting.

He said: After the greeting, the Chancellor suddenly turned to me and said, “Mr. Graham, what is the most important thing in the world?”

Graham continues… Before I could answer, he had answered his own question. He said, “The resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ is alive, then there is hope for the world. But if Jesus Christ is in the grave, then I don’t see the slightest glimmer of hope on the horizon.”

The man who rebuilt Germany after the Holocaust… said Jesus’ resurrection is the only hope for the world.

Maybe you’re new to Christianity, and wondering… “What’s so significant about Jesus rising from the dead?”

Today, we’ll answer that by looking at John 21.

In John 21, Jesus appears to the disciples after his resurrection.

And from our passage… let’s consider five things the resurrection means for you.

First… the resurrection means you can run to Jesus despite your sins (1-8)

1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, [or, the Sea of Galilee] and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

Peter, Thomas, and Nathanael are the… “rough around the edges” disciples.

Thomas and Nathanael were once deeply skeptical of Jesus.

And of course, Peter denied Jesus just before his crucifixion.

The sons of Zebedee are James… and John, who wrote this Gospel.

John 21 takes place during the 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection at Easter and the pouring out of the Spirit at Pentecost.

But until they get further instructions from Jesus… they still gotta pay the rent… v3.

3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.

Jesus suddenly appears and helps the disciples make an unbelievably large catch of fish.

This echoes back to Luke 5 where Jesus first called Peter, James, and John to be his disciples.

8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

The greatness of Jesus reveals the sinfulness of Peter.

And so Peter despairs of his own righteousness… “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

But then… he hears those sweet words from Christ… “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Because here’s how all salvation stories begin.

“I’m a wretched sinner… but Christ is a wonderful Savior.”

From day one, Peter knows his only hope is the mercy of Christ.

All this explains Peter’s reaction to seeing Jesus in v7.

7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

This little detail cracks me up…

Peter hears that it's Jesus, and jumps in the water without hesitation…

The other disciples… v8… “came in the boat.”

Peter’s betrayal of Jesus has not yet been addressed.

And yet, he runs straight to Jesus.

Why isn’t Peter afraid of Jesus?

Because in three years of following Jesus… Peter has learned an important gut instinct.

When you sin, you don’t run from Jesus… you run to Jesus!

Dane Ortlund, in his book Gentle and Lowly says “The Christian life boils down to two steps…”

Step One: Go to Jesus.

Step Two: See Step One.

And friends… however you walked into church this morning, Jesus is eager for you to come to him.

Do you despise yourself because of your sins?

Jesus does not despise a broken and contrite heart.

Have you proudly disobeyed God?

Jesus will abundantly pardon the wicked who forsake their evil way.

The good news of the gospel is this…

To receive unbelievable mercy… all you have to do is go to Jesus.

And as we’ll see in our 2nd point… the gospel comes with free breakfast.

What does the resurrection mean for you?

The resurrection means you can look forward to life in the world to come (9-12)

9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12b Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”

“Come and have breakfast” …that’s my new life verse!

Could anything be better than breakfast at the beach with Jesus?

In 2018, I had sort of a life crisis.

From the time I woke up until the time I went to sleep I was wracked with anxiety.

One evening we had a group of friends from church over.

We enjoyed conversation and an incredible meal.

After everyone left I felt… strangely light.

I realized it was the first time in months that I wasn’t ruminating on anxious thoughts.

What if that feeling could go on forever?

Your favorite breakfast with the ones you love in a beautiful place.

Peace, enjoyment, and fellowship without end.

The gospel satisfies this deep longing of the human heart.

All breakfast jokes aside… there’s a lot going on in v9-12 theologically.

Last week in John 20, we learned the resurrected Jesus can be touched.

Now in John 21, we see that the resurrected Jesus can eat!

1 Corinthians 15:20 says… but in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

This means what’s true of the resurrected Jesus will be true of us when we rise one day.

Because Jesus physically rose, heaven will be physical.

In the new world Jesus is preparing for those who love him…

We will eat and drink.

We will hug and be hugged.

We will laugh and enjoy fellowship with Jesus and his people.

Heaven is when the dwelling place of God will be with man.

Heaven is Jesus, God in flesh, having breakfast at the beach with his people.

Which is why the ancient Nicene Creed ends with this wonderful line…

We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.

Our world needs this hope… but they look for it in all the wrong places.

But the amazing thing about Jesus is he doesn’t just feed you… he restores you.

Point #3… the resurrection means we can have a second chance when we fail God (15-17).

Now recall in John 21:9, it said the beach breakfast featured a charcoal fire.

This is no accident.

Jesus is reminding Peter of John 18:18, when Peter denied him as he sat by a charcoal fire.

As one commentator wrote… “Jesus seeks to reverse at this charcoal fire (John 21:9) what happened at the other one (John 18:18).”

At the first charcoal fire, Peter denied Jesus three times.

At this second charcoal fire, Jesus invites Peter to reaffirm his love three times… v15.

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

Feeding Christ’s sheep refers to the teaching and shepherding ministry of a pastor.

Which means Jesus’ restoration of Peter is not just a restoration in general, but a restoration to ministry.

Why do so many Christian leaders have devastating moral failures?

What if… it's because we have no category for restoration in ministry?

Now to be sure, there are sins where a leader should not be restored: adultery, abuse, theft, or violence.

A person who does these things can be forgiven but they should never be in ministry again.

It's just we have this idea that a pastor or church leader needs to be perfect or they’re disqualified.

And so when a Christian leader struggles with a sin, they’re more inclined to hide it.

They don’t confess their greed or their lust, and so that sin grows in the dark.

And then one day… we’re all shocked when the pastor and his mistress have run off with the church’s money.

So what if instead we learn to see church leaders not as examples of perfection, but repentance?

Like Peter, when church leaders fail but repent… it can be a powerful witness.

Just the other day I heard of a Muslim man who came to faith in Jesus.

What persuaded him was how the Bible records without embarrassment the failures of its key leaders.

The Bible doesn’t try to hide the sins of Abraham, David, Paul, or Peter.

Seeing this, he knew the Bible must be true… because it wasn’t written to glorify human leaders.

Peter is restored to ministry.

But the ministry Peter is restored to, will cost him everything… as we’ll see in our fourth point.

The resurrection means you can forsake everything and follow Jesus (18-22)

Jesus says to Peter… 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Stretch out your hands is a reference to crucifixion.

Jesus called Peter to preach the gospel, then die for the gospel.

The martyrdom of a gospel preacher is his best sermon.

This was true of John Rogers, a Protestant who was burned for his faith by the Roman Catholic authorities during the English Reformation.

As he was tied to the stake he said… “That which I have preached, I will seal with my own blood.”

You and I will probably not be killed for our faith.

But we can glorify God in our ordinary Christian death.

When I was younger I wanted to make a big impact.

Now, I just wanna finish the race well.

A regular prayer of mine is “Lord, I wanna die loving my wife, hating my sin, and believing in Jesus.”

Jesus knows what he’s calling Peter to will be hard.

Which is why v19 says… And after saying this [Jesus] said to him, “Follow me.”

Peter, hearing all this, probably thought he was getting an unfair deal… v20.

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved [that’s John] following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”

In one sense, the Christian life involves a radical concern for others.

“If you love me… feed my sheep!”

But in another sense, it's a “lack” of concern for others.

“What is that to you? You follow me!”

It’s said that “comparison is the thief of joy.”

So what if instead of comparing… we celebrated the different gifts and callings of God’s people?

Peter is fiery and impulsive… John is more steady and discerning.

Peter glorified God by a violent death… John glorified God by a quiet life.

No two Christians in this room have the same exact calling or gifts… and that’s okay!

So instead of being jealous or resenting God, we can submit to his wisdom and focus on what he’s entrusted uniquely to us.

John’s long life was spent leading churches and writing four books of the Bible.

And we’ll consider that in our final point.

What does Jesus' resurrection mean for you?

Lastly, it means you can trust John’s testimony about Jesus (23-25)

23 So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple [John] was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

At the time of writing his Gospel, John was probably in his 70s.

He was possibly the last eyewitness to the risen Christ and so he needed to get his testimony written down.

But John wrote with another pastoral concern in v23.

A rumor spread that John would be alive when Jesus returned.

But this wasn’t true… so John wrote to clear this up before he died.

But above all John wrote “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

And so this gave John a narrow scope for his writing… v25.

25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The point of the Bible is not to tell you everything there is to know… but to show you the way of salvation.

The Bible was not written to make you a Bible nerd but a Jesus follower.

And so, as we close this sermon, and this series… I wanna make an invitation to anyone who is not yet a Christian.

Believe the life-changing good news of Jesus Christ, summarized in John 3:16.

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Let’s pray.

Heavenly Father, thank you that through the resurrection of your Son, the Lord Jesus, we have a living hope.

Hope for a second chance despite our worst failures.

Hope for eternal life in the face of death.

May our lives be marked by hope because we believe this good news of Jesus’ resurrection.

We ask these things in Jesus’ name.
