皆さんこんな経験をしたことはあるでしょうか？
BBCやNHKのようなニュースのアプリを開くと、
数分後、落ち着かなくなって、不安になってくる……まるでコルチゾール値が一気に上がったような感覚になる。
この世界は悪いニュースばかりのように感じてきます。
だからか、最近、「Good News」という新しいYouTubeチャンネルが始まったそうです。
このチャンネルの目的は、「毎月、良いニュースをお届けすること」らしいです。
これを見たとき、私は「これって、教会じゃない？」と思いました。
この教会の目的は、「毎週、良いニュースをお届けすること」つまり、福音を届けることです。
私たちは最近、「福岡に生きる教会」という新シリーズを始めました。
このシリーズでは、聖書と私たちのコアバリューを通して、「私たちは福岡の地で、どんな教会でありたいのか？」ということを考えていきます。
そして今週は、私たちの3つのコアバリューの1つ「福音の中心性」について考えていきます。
私たちは、福音に生きる教会でありたいと思います。
でも、福音とは何なのでしょうか？
なぜ福音が中心であるべきなのでしょうか？
今日の聖書箇所、コリント人への手紙第一15章が、その両方の問いに答えてくれています。
今日は、「私たちが福音に生きるべき3つの理由」について考えていきましょう。
理由①：福音は、まだイエス様を信じていない人、すでに信じている人、両方のためのものだから。（1〜2節）
イエス様の弟子であるパウロは、古代ギリシャの都市コリントに建てた教会に手紙を書きました。
1節から、パウロが何を語っているのか見てみましょう。
1 兄弟たち。私があなたがたに宣べ伝えた福音を、改めて知らせます。あなたがたはその福音を受け入れ、その福音によって立っているのです。2 私がどのようなことばで福音を伝えたか、あなたがたがしっかり覚えているなら、この福音によって救われます。そうでなければ、あなたがたが信じたことは無駄になってしまいます。
パウロは、「兄弟たち、あなたがたに福音を思い起こしてほしい」と語ります。
パウロが話している相手というのは、すでに福音を知っているクリスチャンたちです。
私たちと同じように、彼らも福音を忘れがちだったので、リマインダーが必要でした。
福音はまだイエス様を信じていない人や、信じ始めたばかりの人のためのものだと多くの人が考えます。
そして信仰を持ったら、福音から先に進んで、もっと高度なことを学んでいくものだと思ってしまいます。
でも、私たちが福音を必要としなくなることは決してありません。
ティム・ケラーは、このように表現しました。
福音は、真理という階段の最初の一段ではない。むしろ、真理という車輪の中心にあるハブのようなものだ。
教会が福音を中心に据えると、ときどき不満を言う人が出てきます。
「もうすでにわかりきっていることです。もっと深いメッセージをください。」
そして、その「もっと深いこと」というのは、もっと文化的な背景について、もっと神学的な議論について、もっと実生活に役立つヒントについてだったりします。
時には、「もっと深いことを知りたい」という願いの背後には、プライドが隠れています。
ある牧師は、こんなふうに言いました。
プライドは、『もう知っています』と語る。
謙遜さは、『私はもう一度これを聞く必要があります』と語る。

皆さんの中には、こう思っている人もいるかもしれません。
「福音を思い出させるっていうけど……そもそも福音って何なの？」
3節を見ると、聖書の中でも最も明確な福音の定義が出てきます。
3 私があなたがたに最も大切なこととして伝えたのは、私も受けたことであって、次のことです。キリストは、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、私たちの罪のために死なれたこと、4 また、葬られたこと、また、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、三日目によみがえられたこと
福音（良い知らせ）とは、私たちの罪のためにイエス・キリストが死に、復活されたということです。
キリストは...私たちの罪のために死なれた : 福音の核心は、この言葉にあります。
ここでの表現は、身代わりを意味しており、イエス様が私たちの身代わりとなって死んでくださったということです。
つまり、十字架とは、罪人に向けられていた神様の怒りを、イエス様がその身に受けてくださった場所です。
福音を覚える簡単な方法があります。それは「神・人間・キリスト・応答」です。
神様は聖なるお方で、私たちは神様ご自身を知るようにと造られました。
人間は神様に対して罪を犯し、神様との関係が断たれてしまいました。
キリストは、罪人を聖い神様と和解させるために死んでくださいました。
そして3日目に、死に打ち勝ちよみがえられました。
そして今、イエス様が成し遂げてくださったみわざの恵みを受けるために私たちは悔い改めと信仰をもって応答するべきです
神様から認めてもらうために、私たちにできることは何一つありません。
聖書は、私たちの正しい行いさえも、不潔な衣のようだと語ります。
しかし、私たちがイエス様を信じるその瞬間、イエス様は私たちのすべての罪を引き受け、代わりにご自身の完全な義を与えてくださいます。
神様の目から見た時に、まるで私たちが一度も罪を犯したことがないかのように、義と認められるのです。
この素晴らしい贈り物を受け取るのに必要なのは、信じる心だけです。
なので、皆さんがこれまで一度もそうしたことがなければ、今朝、イエス・キリストの良い知らせを受け取っていただきたいと思います。

福音は、人間からすべての栄光を取り去り、そのすべてを神様にお返しするものです。
だからこそ、人間のプライドは自然と福音に抵抗してしまうのです。
いったい誰がこんなものを作り出したのでしょうか？
理由②：福音は人間から出たものではないから。（3〜6節）
3私があなたがたに最も大切なこととして伝えたのは、私も受けたことであって、次のことです。キリストは、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、私たちの罪のために死なれたこと、4 また、葬られたこと、また、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、三日目によみがえられたこと、 5 また、ケファに現れ、それから十二弟子に現れたことです。6その後、キリストは五百人以上の兄弟たちに同時に現れました。その中にはすでに眠った人も何人かいますが、大多数は今なお生き残っています。
パウロは、自分が「伝えたのは、私も（彼自身も）受けたこと」だと語ります。
「受けたこと...を伝える」という表現は、ユダヤ教の教師たちが、宗教的な教えの内容を変えずにそのまま次の人へ伝えるときに使っていた専門的な表現です。
健全な教会というのは、Uber Eatsの優秀な配達員のようなものです。
私たちが配達員にしてほしいことは、ただ一つ、食べ物を受け取って、私たちのところまで届けることだけです。
そこに何かを加えてほしくもないし、勝手に中身を変えたり、食べ物に手を加えてほしくもありません！
教会の役割も同じで、私たちの仕事は、昔から変わらない福音のメッセージを、何も変えずに伝えることです。
漁師が自分の釣った魚の話をするときのジョークが昔からあります。
その話をするたびに、魚が少しずつ大きくなっていくというジョークです。
イエス様についても同じことが起こったと言う人たちがいます。
イエス様の奇跡や、ご自身が神様であるという主張、そして復活についての話が、語り継がれるたびにどんどん誇張されていったというものです。
これは一見、説得力のある考え方に思えますが、歴史的な資料とは一致しないものです。
コリント人への手紙第一15章3-6節は、パウロ自身が作ったものではなく、パウロよりも前から存在していたもので、初代教会では、福音を要約する信条のようなものとして使われていました。
そして、クリスチャンの歴史家も、クリスチャンではない歴史家も、これが現存する最古の福音の要約だという考えで一致しています。
無神論者の歴史家であるバート・アーマンは、この信条がキリストの十字架から1〜2年後の紀元35年ごろには存在していたと考えています。
つまり、「魚は最初から大きかった」ということです。

福音は、人間が作り出したものではなく、天から与えられたものだからです。
他の宗教は、人間が神様のもとに上っていくことについて語ります。
八正道や、五行などです。
キリスト教は、神様が人間のもとへ下りて来られたことを語ります。
神様ご自身が、罪人を救うためにイエス・キリストという人となり来てくださったというものです。
では、なぜ他の宗教は、どれも「良い行いによって救われる」と教えるのでしょうか？
その理由として、プロテスタントの宗教改革者マルティン・ルターは、人間の心は本質的に自分を正しいと思いたがるものだから、良い行いによって救われるという考えは、人間の心が自然に信じてしまう宗教なのだと言いました。
ルターは、人間が神様のもとへ自力で登ろうとする方法には、3つあると言いました。
一つ目は、良い行いです。
「良い生き方によって、神様を喜ばせることができる。」
二つ目は、神秘的な体験です。
「自分の霊的な方法によって、神様をコントロールすることができる。」
三つ目は、神学的な学びです。
「人間の知恵によって、神様を理解することができる。」
もちろん、これら自体が悪いわけではありませんが、これらは福音ではありません。
本当にそれが福音なのかを見分ける方法は、
「それは、死に際に私を慰めてくれるだろうか？」と問いかけることです。
あと1時間しか生きる時間がないと想像してみてください。
そこへ誰かがやって来て、「良い人になるためにはこうすればいいですよ。幸せな人生を送るためにはこうしましょう。」と言ったとします。
それでは、もう遅いのです！
死と裁きの前では、「こうすればいい」という良いアドバイスは何の役にも立ちません。
私たちに必要なのは、良い知らせです。それは、私たちがすることではなく、私たちのために、すでに成し遂げられたことです。
人生の最後の1時間に、あなたがしっかりと握りしめることができるのは、これです。
「罪なき救い主が死なれたから、私の罪深い魂は自由にされた。正しい神様は、キリストを見て満足され、私を赦してくださる。」
死というものは、私たちを正しい視点へと引き戻してくれます。
そして、人生最後の瞬間にしっかりと握りしめることのできるメッセージならば、それは、私たちにとって何よりも大切なものであるはずです。
理由③：福音は何よりも大切なものだから（3節）
私があなたがたに最も大切なこととして伝えたのは...
パウロは、福音は最も大切なことだと言っています。
これは、コリントの教会へのパウロの手紙全体を通して、繰り返し語られています。
コリント人への手紙第一 1章17節... 17aキリストが私を遣わされたのは、バプテスマを授けるためではなく、福音を...宣べ伝えるためでした
バプテスマも大切ですが、福音ほどではありません！
コリント人への手紙第一 2章2節...2なぜなら私は、あなたがたの間で、イエス・キリスト、しかも十字架につけられたキリストのほかには、何も知るまいと決心していたからです。
礼拝から帰る人たちが、「今日のパウロの説教、何についてだった？」と聞かれたら……
「イエス・キリストと、十字架につけられたキリストについて。」と答えたでしょう。
ルターが説教している有名な絵で、片方の手を聖書に置き、もう片方の手で十字架を指し示している絵があります。
これが、一枚の絵に描かれた牧師としての仕事です。
そして、これこそが私たちがこの教会を始めた理由、聖書から福音を宣べ伝えるためです。
ルターはこう書いています。：福音は、すべてのキリスト教の教理の中で最も重要な教えである。だからこそ、私たちがこの教えをよく知り、他の人々に教え、繰り返し彼らの心に刻み込むことが、何よりも必要なのである。
注意力について書いたベストセラーの本の中で、ジャーナリストのウィニフレッド・ギャラガーは、こう言っています。「あなたの人生とは、あなたが何に意識を向け続けるか、そのすべての積み重ねです。」
そして、それこそが福音を中心に据えるということです。福音が私たちにとって喜びそのものになるまで、福音を繰り返し語り、思い巡らし、そして歌い続けることによって、福音を自分の焦点にするということです。
ある著者は、これを「福音の機能的中心性」と呼んでいます。

もし「福音の中心性」が、紙に書かれた単なるコアバリューに過ぎないのなら、何の意味もありません。
私たちの教会に必要なのは、福音についての教理だけではなく、福音によって形づくられる文化です。
最後に、福音に形づくられた文化を私たちの教会に築くための3つの方法について、考えていきましょう。
聖書のすべての箇所からキリストを見つける
3節にご注目ください……
3b キリストは、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、私たちの罪のために死なれたこと、4 また、葬られたこと、また、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、三日目によみがえられたこと、
「聖書に書いてあるとおりに」という言葉は、決して何気なく付け加えられたものではありません。
この手紙が書かれた当時、まだ新約聖書は存在していませんでした。
なので、ここで言われている「聖書」は、イエス様が生まれる約400年前に完成していた旧約聖書を指しているはずです。
ここで私たちは、イエス様と使徒たちが繰り返し語っていた、キリスト教の中心的な主張の一つ、旧約聖書全体が、最終的にはイエス様の死と復活について語っているという主張に出会います。
イエス様ご自身が、旧約聖書のストーリーをどのように要約されたのか見てみましょう。
46b「次のように書いてあります。『キリストは苦しみを受け、三日目に死人の中からよみがえり、47 その名によって、罪の赦しを得させる悔い改めが、あらゆる国の人々に宣べ伝えられる。』エルサレムから開始して、
旧約聖書に出てくる約束、物語、ジャンル、テーマ、英雄たちは、全てイエス・キリストを指し示すものです。
なので、新約聖書を読むとき、新約聖書が旧約聖書をどのように用いているのか注目してみてください。
そして旧約聖書へ戻り、新約聖書で学んだことを手がかりにして、旧約聖書をより深く理解していただけたらと思います。
なぜなら、初代教会の神学者アウグスティヌスが言ったように、
「旧約聖書は隠された新約聖書であり、新約聖書は明らかにされた旧約聖書である。」からです。
人生のすべてに福音を当てはめる
1b 私があなたがたに宣べ伝えた福音..を受け入れ、その福音によって立っているのです。 2私がどのようなことばで福音を伝えたか、あなたがたがしっかり覚えているなら、この福音によって救われます。
福音によって救われたのは真実ではありますが、ここで注目したいのは、英語で見たときに「あなたがたは福音によって救われた」と過去形では書かれていないことです。
あなたがたは福音によって救われますと現在形で書かれているのです。
福音は、私たちを罪の罰からだけでなく、罪の力からも救ってくださいます。
テトスへの手紙2章で、このことが説明されています。
11 実に、すべての人に救いをもたらす神の恵みが現れたのです。12 その恵みは、私たちが不敬虔とこの世の欲を捨て、今の世にあって、慎み深く、正しく、敬虔に生活し、
神様の恵みが、私たちに不敬虔を捨てるよう教えてくださるのです。
誰かが赦すことや、夫婦関係、お金について悩んでいるとき、私たちはよく「良いアドバイス」をしようとします。
「赦さないのは、あなた自身のためによくない。」とか「デートに行ってみたら？」とか「家計簿をつけたら？」とか
でも聖書が私たちを敬虔に生きるよう動機づけるのは、良いアドバイスではなく、良い知らせです。
「どうしてもあの人を赦せません……。」
コロサイ人への手紙3章はこう語ります。
主があなたがたを赦してくださったように、あなたがたもそうしなさい。
「妻を愛することができません……。」
エペソ人への手紙5章は、こう語ります。
夫たちよ。キリストが教会を愛し、教会のためにご自分を献げられたように、あなたがたも妻を愛しなさい。
「献金したくないし、他の人と分かち合いたくありません……。」
コリント人への手紙第二8章はこう語ります。
あなたがたは、私たちの主イエス・キリストの恵みを知っています。すなわち、主は富んでおられたのに、あなたがたのために貧しくなられました。それは、あなたがたが、キリストの貧しさによって富む者となるためです。
福音は、一つの言語のようなものです。
福音を実生活の中で用いるには、福音を流暢に話せるようになる必要があります。
時間がかかりますし、聖書をたくさん読むことが必要です。
でも、今日、誰もができる実践方法を１つ、最後に紹介したいと思います。
自分の罪を告白する
3節には、キリストは...私たちの罪のために死なれたと書かれています。
キリストが死なれたのは、私たちの漠然とした「罪深さ」のためだけではなく、私たちが犯した一つひとつの具体的な罪のためでもあります。
だから私たちに求められているのは、ただ「私は罪人です」と一般的に悔い改めることではなく、自分が具体的に犯した罪を認め、具体的に告白し、具体的に悔い改めることです。
罪は、カビのように、暗闇の中で広がっていきます。
なので、罪に対抗する方法は、それを光の中に持ってくることです。
ヨハネの手紙第一 1章には、こう書かれています。
7 もし私たちが、神が光の中におられるように、光の中を歩んでいるなら、互いに交わりを持ち、御子イエスの血がすべての罪から私たちをきよめてくださいます。8 もし自分には罪がないと言うなら、私たちは自分自身を欺いており、私たちのうちに真理はありません。9もし私たちが自分の罪を告白するなら、神は真実で正しい方ですから、その罪を赦し、私たちをすべての不義からきよめてくださいます。
レイ・オートランドという牧師が、教会の人たちにこう言いました。
「もし、私たちがこの聖書箇所に書かれていることを、本当に実践してみたらいかがでしょうか？」
そして彼は、教会の男性たちを集めて、こう言いました。
皆さん。二人組になって、隣にいる人と向き合ってみましょう。そして、お互いに『今まで自分がした中で、最もひどいこと』を話しあってみましょう。
そこから、その教会は大きな変化を遂げ、神様が素晴らしい御業をなされました。
教会史の中で、大きなリバイバルの中心には、いつも罪の告白があります。
その一つが、1907年の韓国で起こった平壌大覚醒運動です。
宣教師や牧師たちが集まっていたある集会で、人が次々と、自発的に自分の罪を告白し始めたそうです。
そこから福音のリバイバルが広がり、韓国全土に大きな影響を与えました。
学校は、子どもたちが自分の罪を嘆き悲しむこと以外、何もしようとしなくなったため、休校にしなければならないほどでした。
そして数十年の間に、クリスチャン人口は1％未満から30％にまで増加したそうです。
もしかすると、あなたが今も同じ罪を繰り返している理由は、自分が赦されていることを、心の底から信じ切れていないからかもしれません。
神様の律法の恐ろしさを感じるとき、「自分は神様が求めておられる基準には、到底及んでいない……」と気づかされます。
そんな時、自分の側にいる誰かに「あなたは赦されていますよ。」と福音を宣言してもらう必要があります。
これこそが、罪に本当に打ち勝つ唯一の方法なのです。
あるクリスチャンが、このように書いています。
罪は、まず良心において赦されない限り、心の中でも生活の中でも、十字架につけることはできない。
私たちは、このためのプログラムを用意しているわけではありません。
罪の告白は、あらかじめ予定を組まずに、行うほうが良いことがあります。
皆さんそれぞれにできることがあります。
もし今、「自分がしたこと、言ったことの何かが、良心に引っかかっている……」と心に重荷を感じているなら、
信頼できる同性の人を見つけて、罪を告白してもいいか尋ねてみてください。
そして、その告白を聞く側になった方は、アドバイスをするのではなく、ただ福音を伝えましょう。

今日は、主の晩餐をいつもと少し違う形で行います。
静かに自分自身を振り返る時間を少し取りたいと思います。
この時間を用いて、心の中で静かに神様に罪を告白していただければと思います。
後ほど、短い罪の告白の祈りを、皆で共に声に出して読みたいと思います。.
そして、神様のみことばから、赦しの約束を聞きましょう。

You open up your news app, like BBC or NHK…
And after a few minutes, you feel on edge, anxious… like your cortisol levels have just spiked up.
It feels like the world is full of nothing but bad news.
This is why a new YouTube channel was recently launched called Good News.
The purpose of this channel is to deliver… “your monthly dose of good news.”
When I saw it I thought… “that’s the church!”
The purpose of this church is to deliver… “your weekly dose of good news… that is, the gospel.
We just started a new series called Church in the City.
We’re gonna be looking at Scripture and our core values to answer the question: what kind of church do we want to be in Fukuoka?
This week, we’ll consider the first of our three core values, the Centrality of the Gospel.
We wanna be a church that’s obsessed with the gospel.
But what is the gospel?
Why is the gospel central?
Our text, 1 Corinthians 15, answers both questions.
Today, let's consider three reasons you should be obsessed with the gospel.
Reason #1: The gospel is for unbelievers and believers (v1-2).
Paul, a disciple of Jesus, is writing to a church he planted in the Ancient Greek city of Corinth.
Listen to what Paul says, starting in v1.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
Paul says I wanna remind you… brothers of the gospel.
He’s talking to Christians who know the gospel already.
But they need a reminder because, like us… they’re prone to gospel amnesia.
Many think the gospel is just for new or non-Christians.
And once you come to faith, you move past the gospel to the advanced stuff.
But you never outgrow your need for the gospel.
As Tim Keller put it… the gospel is not the first step in a stairway of truths; rather, it is more like the hub in a wheel of truth.
When a church makes the gospel central, sometimes people complain.
“We know this already… give us the deep stuff.”
And by that they mean… more cultural backgrounds, more theological debates, more practical life tips.
Sometimes, what's behind a desire to “get deep” is pride.
As one pastor put it… Pride says: “I know this already.” Humility says: “I need to hear this again.”

I know what some of you are thinking.
“Remind me of the gospel? I don’t know what it is in the first place.”
In v3, we find the clearest definition of the gospel in the Bible.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
The gospel (or good news) is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins.
The heart of the gospel is in these five words: Christ… died… for… our… sins.
The language here is substitutionary… Jesus died IN OUR PLACE.
That is, the cross is where Jesus absorbed the wrath of God against sinners.
One easy way to remember the gospel is: God, Man, Christ, Response.
God is holy and he created us to know him.
Man has sinned against God, separating us from him.
Christ died to reconcile sinners to a holy God.
Three days later, he rose again, defeating death.
And now, to benefit from what Jesus has done, you must respond in repentance and faith.
There’s nothing you can do to gain any credit with God.
The Bible says all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
But at the moment you believe, Jesus takes all your sin and gives you all his righteousness.
In the eyes of God, it is as if you have never sinned or been a sinner.
To receive this wonderful gift… all you have to do is accept it with a believing heart…
And so if you’ve never done so before, I invite you to receive the good news of Jesus Christ this morning.

The gospel takes all glory away from man and gives it to God.
Which is why human pride naturally resists the gospel.
So who would make this up?
Reason #2: The gospel is not from man (v3-6).
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
Paul says he just delivered… what he also received.
Delivering… what I also received is the technical language Jewish Rabbis would use when passing on a religious teaching without change.
A healthy church is like a good Uber Eats driver.
All you want is them to do is receive the food and deliver it to you.
You don’t want them to add anything or tamper with your food in any way!
Our job as a church is to deliver the old gospel message without changing it.
There’s an old joke about when a fisherman tells the story of the fish he caught…
Every time he tells the story… the fish gets a little bigger.
Some say… this is what happened with Jesus.
Jesus miracles, his claims to divinity, his resurrection were exaggerated with each re-telling of the story.
It's a compelling idea… but it doesn’t line up with the historical data.
1 Corinthians 15:3-6 predates Paul, and was used in the early church like a creed to summarize the gospel.
Historians, both Christian and non-Christian, agree that it's the oldest written summary of the gospel that exists.
Bart Ehrman, an atheist historian, dates this creed to 1-2 years after the cross of Christ… 35 AD.
The fish was always big… so to speak.

The gospel was not invented by man, because it came down from heaven.
Other religions are about man ascending to God.
The Eightfold Path, the Five Pillars…
Christianity is about God descending to man.
God became a man, Jesus Christ, to save sinners.
Why does every other religion teach salvation by good works?
The Protestant Reformer Martin Luther said… because the human heart is inherently self-righteous, salvation by good works is the default religion of the human heart.
Luther said there's three ways people try to climb up to God.
One is good works.
“I can please God with my morality.”
Another is mystical experience.
“I can control God with my spiritual techniques.”
A third is theological study
“I can understand God with human wisdom.”
None of these are bad things, but they’re not the gospel.
The real test of whether or not it's the gospel is this…
“Will it comfort me on my death bed?”
Imagine you have an hour left to live…
And someone comes to you like “here’s how to be a good person and live a happy life.”
“Uhh… too late!”
Good advice does nothing in the face of death and judgment.
You need good news, not something you do, but something that's been done FOR you.
Here’s what you can cling to in your final hour…
“Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free. For God the just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me.”
Death puts everything into proper perspective.
And a message you can cling to in your final hour… must be important.
Reason #3: The gospel is of first importance (v3)
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance…
Paul says the gospel is of first importance…
This is all over Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 1:17… 17a For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel.
Baptism is important… but not as much as the gospel!
1 Corinthians 2:2… 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
People left the church service like… “what was Paul’s sermon about?”
Jesus Christ and him crucified.

And this is why we started this church… to proclaim the gospel from the Bible.
Luther writes: the gospel is the principal article of all Christian doctrine… most necessary it is, therefore, that we should know this article well, teach it unto others, and beat it into their heads continually.
In her best-selling book on attention, journalist Winnifred Gallagher says “your life is the sum total of what you focus on.”
And that’s what it means to make the gospel central…to make it your focus by rehearsing it, meditating on it, and singing it until it becomes your delight.
One author calls this “the functional centrality of the gospel.”

If gospel centrality is just a value on a paper, it's useless.
Our church needs not just gospel doctrine, but gospel culture.
For the last couple minutes… let's briefly think about three ways to build a gospel-shaped culture in our church.
Look for Christ in all of Scripture
Notice something back in v3…
3b that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
“In accordance with the Scriptures” is not a throwaway line.
This was written when there was no New Testament yet.
So the Scriptures must refer to the Old Testament, completed 400 years before Jesus was born.
Here we encounter one of the central claims of Jesus and the apostles… that the Old Testament is ultimately about Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Listen to how Jesus summarized the story of the Old Testament.
46b “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”
Every promise… story… genre… theme… and hero in the Old Testament leads us to Jesus Christ.
From every train in Kyushu, you can find a way to Tenjin.
In the same way, from every passage in the Old Testament you can find a way to Jesus Christ.
So, as you read the New Testament, pay attention to how it uses the Old Testament.
Then, go back and read the Old Testament, using what you’ve learned in the New Testament to understand it better.
Because, in the words of the early church theologian Augustine…
“The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed. The New Testament is the Old Testament revealed."
Apply the gospel in all of life
1b the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved
Notice… it doesn’t say “you were saved by the gospel”, though that’s true.
It says you are being saved by the gospel… present tense.
The gospel saves us not just from the penalty of sin, but from the power of sin.
Titus 2 explains…
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age
The grace of God… trains us to renounce ungodliness.
Many times when someone’s struggling with forgiveness, their marriage, or money we give them good advice.
“Un-forgiveness is bad for you”… “go on a date night”… “make a budget.”
But the Bible motivates godliness not with good advice, but with good news.
“I can’t forgive that person…”
Colossians 3 says… as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
“I’m struggling to love my wife…”
Ephesians 5 says… husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
“I don't wanna give offering or share with others…”
2 Corinthians 9 says… For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
The gospel is like a language.
To use the gospel practically, you have to become fluent in it.
This takes time, and a lot of Bible reading.
But here’s one last application any of us can do today.
Confess your sins
v3 says Christ died for our sins.
Christ died not just for our general sinfulness, but for our every specific sin.
Which means we’re called not to a generic repentance, but to confess and repent of our specific sins specifically.
Sin is like mold… it grows in the dark.
So the way to deal with sin is to bring it into the light.
Listen to what 1 John 1 says.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
A pastor named Ray Ortlund told his church… “what if we actually did what this passage says?”
So he gathered a bunch of men from his church and said this…
Okay, fellas... Why don’t we break up in twos and turn to the guy next to you… and tell him the worst thing you’ve ever done?
And the church was never the same… God did an amazing work.
At the center of every great revival in church history is confession of sin.
Like the Pyongyang Awakening in Korea in 1907.
At a meeting of missionaries and pastors, people started spontaneously confessing sin.
Gospel awakening spread from that meeting to the entire country.
Schools had to be closed because kids refused to do anything but weep for their sins.
Christianity went from less than 1% to 30% of the population in a few decades.
What if the reason you’re still sinning is because you don't fully believe you are forgiven?
When you feel the terror of the law, that you’ve fallen far short of what God demands…
You need someone outside of you to proclaim the gospel… “you are forgiven.”
That’s the only way to truly defeat sin.
As one Christian wrote… No sin can be crucified either in heart or life, unless it be first pardoned in conscience.
We don’t have a program for this.
Confession of sin is best when it's not pre-planned.
But here’s what you could do.
If your heart feels burdened, like “my conscience is unsettled by something I’ve done or said.”
Find someone you trust of the same gender, and ask if you can confess your sin.
And if you’re the one listening to the confession, don’t give advice, give them the gospel.

Today, we’re gonna do the Lord’s Supper a little differently.
There’s going to be some quiet time for reflection.
This is a good time to confess sin to God quietly, in your heart.
We’ll read a short confession of sin out loud together.
Then, we’ll hear the promise of forgiveness from God’s Word.
