Hebrews 10:23-27
(See English below)

D. L. Moody was a famous evangelist in the 1800s in Chicago.
One time, sitting by a fireplace, he was talking to a man who had just become a Christian about church attendance.
The man said… “I believe I can be just as good a Christian outside the church as I can be inside it.”
Moody said nothing.
He walked over to the fireplace, removed a burning log, and placed it on the ground.
The two men sat in silence… and watched the fire on the log burn out.
“I see,” the man said.
We’re in the middle of a sermon series called Church in the City, and today we’re exploring the 2nd of our 3 core values…
The Necessity of the Church
Our text is Hebrews chapter 10.
And, just a warning… I have a provocative claim this morning.
If you want to persevere in faith and therefore make it to heaven, you should go to church basically every week.
Are there exceptions to this?
Of course!
You get sick… you have to travel… your boss forced you to work… you live in North Korea.
But exceptions are not the rule.
98% of us, 95% of the time, should be in church every week.
Church attendance is not optional for the Christian.
If you think that’s an over-statement… I hope you’ll see I’m not even saying this as sharply as the book of Hebrews does!
So let me defend this claim from Hebrews 10.
Then, we’ll consider what it means for us practically.
***
The book of Hebrews, despite the name, is in the New Testament.
Many Bible scholars believe Hebrews was originally a sermon.
So today’s sermon… is a sermon about a sermon!
The original listeners were Christians from a Jewish background.
These Christians were under intense pressure from their family and society to go back to their life before Jesus.
Sound familiar?
Hebrews counters the temptation to abandon Jesus with a simple truth…
Jesus is better than anything you would forsake him for.
So before I say anything else about church, I really hope this is clear…
Attending church is not about making you precious to Jesus.
No, the point of church is to make Jesus precious to you!
Why is Jesus so precious?
Take a look at Hebrews 10:19.
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God…
In the Old Testament, the holy place was the part of the temple where God’s presence dwelt in a special way.
This section was blocked off by a curtain.
Only the God-appointed high priest was allowed to enter once a year.
Because here’s our biggest problem…
You and I can’t enter into God’s presence because of our sin.
Let's say… you invited me to your house for lunch today.
But… without any hesitation or remorse… I walked right into your house with these big, dirty boots.
What would you do?
You’d say “get outta my house with those boots you silly American!”
***
But what happens… when you casually walk into the presence of a holy God covered in sin?!
What do you think God will say?
“Get out of my presence with your sin!”
I can easily take off these boots… but nothing can wash away the stain of your sin.
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Jesus Christ, our great priest, has opened up a new and living way by his death on the cross.
The blood of Jesus tore the curtain that separates God and man.
The Bible says when Jesus died, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
So now, you can have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus.
I visited the US recently, and there was a long line at immigration.
We have little kids, and I saw there was a priority lane.
But I was scared because I had to walk past all the people waiting in the regular line.
But then a staff member saw us…
As she led us right up to the priority lane… we walked with confidence.
You can have that same confidence to approach God.
The blood of Jesus has opened the gates of heaven.
God calls you to walk in… but you’re afraid.
So Jesus comes and says… “let's walk in together.”
Having made the gospel clear, Hebrews turns to practical application.
v22: 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
What is a true heart of faith?
Your inside is washed clean… your heart is sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.
And your outside is washed clean… your body is washed with pure water.
Bible scholars believe this is a reference to baptism.
To these baptized Christians he says in v23…
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
God is faithful to do what he promised in his Word.
So will you, by faith, hold fast to God’s promises?
But faith is not just an idea in your head.
Faith is not just a feeling in your heart.
True faith always has practical expression.
v24: 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works
How do you stir someone up to good works?
Send them a daily text reminder?
Have ChatGPT make them a list of ten good works they can do today?
No, it's much more simple than that… v25 tells us exactly what to do.
25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Stirring one another up to good works requires presence.
You can’t encourage someone you never see!
But the problem was some Christians were in the habit of not meeting together with the church.
Was it because of persecution, busy-ness, or apathy?
We don’t know why… and that’s kind of the point.
Hebrews doesn’t explain the reason for their absence, just the negative effects of their absence.
Notice in v25 how the opposite of encouraging one another is neglecting to meet together.
25 not neglecting to meet together… but encouraging one another
Christian… not attending the church gathering for selfish reasons doesn’t just impact you.
Neglecting the gathering discourages other church members.
Neglecting the gathering worries pastors.
Neglecting the gathering confuses non-Christians.
***
Now something kind of strange is how v25 connects going to church and judgment day.
25 not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some but encouraging one another all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
A soccer coach might say “team, let's meet to practice all the more, because the Day of the championship is drawing near.”
In the same way, Hebrews is saying “church, let's gather to encourage one another all the more, because the Day of judgment is drawing near.”
Which helps us understand why v26 says this…
26 For [or, because] if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.
Christians with an introspective conscience agonize over this passage, but we gotta remember the context.
The Old Testament law made a distinction between unintentional sin and deliberate sin.
And so a person who goes on sinning deliberately, is a person who consciously, willfully denies Christ.
This is called apostasy.
And for a person who commits apostasy, who “falls away from the living God”... “there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment.”
***
So why does Hebrews make this connection between not gathering, apostasy, and judgment?
Because not gathering with the church for an extended period is often the beginning of apostasy.
Remaining in the faith is a matter of eternal life and death.
Which is why God’s chosen method to keep us from falling away is gathering with Christians.
Listen to how Hebrews 3 puts it.
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
Terrorist attacks make the news.
But you never really hear about the terrorist attacks that were prevented.
Likewise, when people abandon the faith, it's obvious.
But what about when apostasy is prevented?
We may never know how many times at this church gathering someone was contemplating serious sin or even walking away from Christ…
But a song… a conversation… a sermon… kept them in the faith.
***
To summarize, here’s the case from Hebrews.
We are saved by faith alone.
To make it to heaven, you must persevere in faith.
Church gatherings are a biblical means for perseverance in faith.
People ask… “Can I be a Christian and not go to church?”
But that’s like asking…
“Can I be employed and not go to work?”
“Can I be married and not talk to my spouse?”
***
If you said to most Christians throughout church history… “I’m a Christian but I don’t attend church”... they would be really confused.
We modern Christians see private devotion as central and public worship as supplemental.
But biblically it's the opposite… public worship is central, and private devotion is supplemental.
David Clarkson, an English pastor, once gave a sermon called “Public Worship Is To Be Preferred Over Private.”
His case was based on Psalm 87:2.
“The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.”
The dwelling places of Jacob refers to all the places the Israelites lived.
The gates of Zion refers to the temple in Jerusalem, where God’s people would gather to worship him.
God loves when we worship him privately, in the dwelling places of Jacob.
But God is most glorified when we gather together to worship him at the gates of Zion.
Which is why God’s people all over the world prioritize gathering, no matter the cost.
I recently heard a story about a church from a predominantly Muslim country where it's illegal to be a Christian.
The congregation met in a small apartment.
For safety, the church members all took different routes and arrived at different times.
It's so dangerous they can’t even sing… so they have to silently read the words of the worship song.
The worship leader would say, very quietly, “first verse.”
And then, the church would silently mouth out the words together.
***
Okay, so worship gatherings are essential.
Lets spend our last couple minutes here thinking about how to get the most out of worship gatherings.
First, remember it's not about you.
Hebrews 13 says: 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,29 for our God is a consuming fire.
Acceptable worship is marked by gratitude… reverence, and awe.
Grateful and in awe… that’s EXACTLY how I feel when I get off a really turbulent plane ride.
Like “I barely escaped with my life… I’m so happy I could kiss the ground!”
That strange mixture of fear and joy is what it means to offer God acceptable worship.
Like “I deserve hell… but because of Jesus, I’m getting heaven? Are you kidding me?”
This is acceptable worship… which implies that not all worship is acceptable to God
“I’m tired… I don’t wanna sing… I don’t wanna listen to the sermon.”
“I’m busy… will it be interesting, will I get something out of the service?”
So often we think “is this worship gathering acceptable to me?”
Instead we need to think “is my worship acceptable to God?”
Someone once told a pastor named Francis Chan…“I didn’t like worship today.”
Francis Chan responded, “that’s okay. WE WEREN’T WORSHIPPING YOU.”
Second, be careful how you hear.
James 1 says teachers like me will be judged more strictly.
I have a responsibility to be accurate, clear, and engaging.
But God will hold you responsible for how you hear his Word.
Hebrews 2:1 says: Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
Hearing God’s voice through his Word is a matter of life and death!
Hebrews 3:15… Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.
When the person you’re talking to has clearly stopped listening… what do you do?
You stop talking.
Likewise, if God, through his Word, commands you to repent and obey but you keep on ignoring it…
Eventually, God will give you over to your sin and stop speaking to you.
Your ears will hear the sound of the Bible being read, but your heart will be hardened.
Third, join a local church.
Now, if we just have a religious event where we file in and file out… and we don’t know each other… we’re missing the point.
Hebrews says we need to…
exhort one another every day
stir up one another to love and good works
There are 100 one another commands like these in the New Testament… and you can’t possibly obey them without a church.
This is one of the reasons our church practices membership.
When you join a church, you’re saying these are my “one another” people.
The essence of church membership is a concern not just for your growth in Christ, but for others' growth in Christ.
If you wanna learn more, join us for Membership Connect in two weeks, on September 20th.
It will be happening at 1pm, right after the church gathering.
And listen, I know there’s people here who have been hurt by churches and Christians.
I want to hear your story, and I don’t mean to be dismissive in any way.
But saying… “I was hurt by Christians, so I’m done with church” is like saying “I got bad medical advice, so I’m done with healthcare.”
Lastly, prepare your heart.
Some say “I don’t have time for church, I have so much to do.”
Exodus 20 says: 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10b but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.
Christians debate whether and how the Sabbath applies today, but the principle remains.
God expects us to get our work done in six days, so we can rest and worship him on the Lord’s Day.
This is why in the Old Testament, a tradition called “the day of preparation” developed.
This was the day before Sabbath where you worked extra hard to do all your chores and all your work so you could worship God the following day.
For us, this means… Sunday morning church is a Saturday night decision.

The church is like a fireplace.
You and I… are like logs in the fire.
Many of you are on fire for Jesus!
Your job… is to set the other logs on fire.
For some of you… your love for Jesus is growing cold.
But if you want to be on fire again… you’re in the right place!
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus whose blood gives us access to you.
God, help every person here today to come to you through faith in Jesus Christ.
And for those who already believe, use this church family to help us continue in the faith.
We ask these things in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
