まだ届いていない人に福音を届ける教会 | A Church That Reaches the Unreached ローマ人への手紙 10章9〜17節 Romans 10:9-17
(See English below)

At the beginning of the Olympic Games, there is the famous cauldron lighting ceremony.
The logistics of transporting this flame to its final stop are un-believable.
The flame is first lit in Olympia, Greece.
Then, through a long relay race of runners, the flame is passed on until it reaches its final destination.
For the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the flame was carried by 21,000 runners, across six continents, over 130 days.
Most incredible of all is how as the flame changes hands and makes its way across the world… it never stops burning!
Christian, what did it take for the gospel to get to you?
You heard the gospel from someone who heard the gospel from someone who heard the gospel from someone…
For 2,000 years, faithful Christians have kept the flame burning and passed it on…
…going all the way back to when Jesus first lit the flame by his resurrection from the dead.
We’re in the final week of a sermon series called Church in the City.
Today, we’re considering our 3rd core value: the Urgency of the Mission.
As a church, we wanna get the gospel right and get the gospel out.
Romans 10 shows what it takes to get the gospel to those who have never heard.
And so today, I wanna talk about two privileges of the church.
A glorious gospel
An urgent task
First, a glorious gospel (v9-13)
Romans is a letter the apostle Paul wrote to a church in Rome.
And did you know… Romans is actually a missionary support letter?
Romans 15:24 - I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.
Paul wanted to take the gospel to Spain with the support of the church in Rome.
And to secure their support, he explains the gospel he preaches.
The Romans Road concisely summarizes the gospel, as taught in Romans.
Romans 3:23 - …all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Romans 6:23 - …the wages of sin is death
Romans 5:8 - …but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us
And now, in Romans 10, we reach the end of the Romans road…
Romans 10:9 - …because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Now, let's say you walk up to a random person in the mall and say "repeat after me… Jesus is Lord…”
If they say those words, will they be saved?
No… because they don’t know what that even means!
That said… v9 shows what you need to believe to be saved is actually pretty basic.
You need to believe that Jesus is Lord.
Which based on Paul’s reference to the prophet Joel in v13, Jesus is Lord means Jesus is Yahweh, the One True God of the Old Testament.
And you need to believe that God raised him from the dead.
And of course, that implies you believe Jesus died on the cross.
This is the floor, not the ceiling.
The Bible asks us to believe a lot more than this, but this is about the minimum to be saved.
Jesus is God in the flesh who died on the cross for your sins and rose from the dead.
If you confess Jesus as your Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved!
If you’re here this morning and you’re not a Christian… you can receive this good news today.
You don’t need to have read the whole Bible.
You don’t need to have attended church for years.
You don’t need to get religious and clean up your life first.
You just need simple faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus for your salvation.
It's not complicated.
And as v12 says… it's free and available to all.
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Jew and Greek is a way of saying “Jews and non-Jews.”
Earlier, Paul said Jews and non-Jews are equally in need of salvation.
Romans 3:23 - For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Now, Paul says Jews and non-Jews are equally offered salvation.
v12: For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.
When I first came to Japan, I was struck by how people are so different.
People’s appearance, language, and cultural values are all so different from where I grew up.
But the longer I live here, the more I appreciate how people are the same.
Cultural differences matter, but most fundamentally we’re all human beings made in God’s image.
We’re all broken by sin, and we’re all offered the same hope in Jesus.
Jesus, the same Lord, is Lord of all, and he bestows his riches on all who call on him.
Paul often uses the language of wealth to describe Jesus.
Because Jesus, the Son of God, has unlimited resources.
And the infinite wealth of Christ is available to anyone who calls on him.
Bill Gates makes $125 USD or 二万円 every second.
Which means if he drops an 一万円 bill out of his pocket, it's literally not worth his time to pick it up.
Now, imagine this is Bills Gate’s phone number…
And anyone who calls Bill Gates will be given 1億円 or $600,000 USD.
So you call Bill… and he says “the money’s dropping into your account… right now”
You’re shocked… but as you’re about to hang up… he says this.
“Anyone who calls this number will get the same thing. Can you share this with others as you have the chance?”
The riches of eternal joy with God are bestowed on all who call on Jesus’ name.
How urgently you should receive this good news!
How urgently you should spread this good news!
***
We have a glorious gospel… everyone who calls on the name of Jesus will be saved!
But that also means… we have an urgent task, because unless people call on the name of Jesus they will not be saved.
There’s a moment when the flame of faith is lit.
But what comes before that… what’s the route of the gospel torch?
Through a series of rhetorical questions, Paul traces back the chain of events necessary for someone to encounter the gospel.
v14, a person has to hear the gospel.
14a How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?
Biblical faith has three components: knowledge, agreement, and trust.
You can’t agree with or trust in what you don’t know.
Romans 1 says the natural world reveals the existence of a Creator, leaving us “without excuse.”
Every human being knows enough about God to be accountable for their sin.
But to be saved from our sin, we have to hear about and believe in Christ.
***
But “that’s not fair… what about the innocent guy on the island who's never heard of Jesus?”
The answer to that is easy… if he is innocent, he will go to heaven.
The only problem is… he doesn’t exist!
The entire argument of Romans is that no one is innocent… “no one is righteous, no not one!”
Every sin against an infinitely holy God deserves punishment.
And a person not knowing about Jesus, doesn’t change the fact that they (like all of us!) deserve to go to hell.
Sometimes God, in his mercy, sends the gospel.
Sometimes God, in his justice, does not send the gospel.
Anyone who says “that’s unfair” needs to remember… their salvation was not fair!
All condemnation for sin is completely deserved.
Any salvation despite sin is completely un-deserved.
***
There’s three possible responses to this…
Deny Christianity because this is a hard teaching.
Accept Christianity, but make up a theology to justify your lack of evangelism.
Or… Accept both Christianity and the responsibility to evangelize.
Paul is a fan of option #3.
When Paul asks… “And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?”
His response ISN’T “thankfully they get a second chance after death!”
No, no… Paul says, “well, we’d better get to work because…” v14: how are they to hear without someone preaching?
No one is saved apart from consciously putting their faith in Jesus.
And God’s ordinary way of bringing that about is by sending a human messenger to preach the Word of God.
Why is human preaching essential?
Because God’s Word saves, James 1:21.
21b receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
God’s Word imparts the new birth, 1 Peter 1:23.
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God
And God's Word carries the power of the Holy Spirit, Acts 10:44.
44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.
The Holy Spirit creates faith and gives new birth as the Word of God is preached.
Which is why Paul says here in Romans 10:17…17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Now of course, a big part of that is sermons at a church gathering.
But teaching the Word is not just the job of the pastor.
This could look like teaching one another at Table Talk after church or at a mid-week Life Group.
Or studying First Steps with a non-Christian friend.
Or teaching the gospel to your children.
In all these places, our confidence is not in our ability to communicate, but in the Word of God’s power to save.
But our confidence also comes from knowing we are SENT by God.
v15: And how are they to preach unless they are sent?
This is huge for ministry in Japan.
To know that God has sent me here, keeps me going on the hard days.
So how can you know you are sent by God?
In Acts 13, the church in Antioch, had a lot of gifted and godly teachers.
And here’s what the Holy Spirit prompted that church to do.
2 While they [the gathered church] were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
Who sent Paul and Barnabas?
The church… or …the Holy Spirit?
…yes.
The Holy Spirit sends missionaries through the church.
Because the church is the origin, the goal, and the means of missions.
Churches send Christians to plant gospel-proclaiming churches that plant gospel-proclaiming churches.
So what’s our mission strategy as a church?
…the church!
Missions is just the church extending itself to a new place.
Which is why this church exists to see Fukuoka saturated with the gospel through making disciples and planting churches.
My prayer is that we would be like the church in Antioch.
That we’d make disciples, mature disciples, and then send disciples to plant churches.
We wanna measure the success of this church not by our seating capacity but by our sending capacity.
***
We have a glorious gospel and an urgent task.
How do we even get started?
The old Chinese proverb says… a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
So very quickly… here are five simple ways to get started in sharing the gospel.
First, pray for opportunities.
There’s been SO many times where I’ve asked God to send me someone to share the gospel with…
…and within just a few hours someone asks me about Jesus.
Second, ask good questions.
How do you pivot from small talk to the gospel?
Just be really quick to tell people you’re a Christian who goes to church.
And if they don’t react, ask them… “have you ever met a Christian?”, “have you ever been to church?”
If they say “no, I’m Buddhist…”
You can say “tell me more, are you Buddhist because of tradition, or because you think it's really true?”
People are interested in people who are interested in them.
And so if you ask people questions about their beliefs with a genuinely curious spirit, you will have a fruitful conversation.
Third, memorize Scripture.
Many Samurai carried daishō, two swords.
The different swords were for different situations… indoor and outdoor, close quarters and long distance.
Mastering the different swords was a matter of life and death.
Likewise, mastering different Bible passages can be a matter of life or death.
Ephesians 6 calls the Word of God “the Sword of the Spirit.”
So what if being able to accurately quote John 3:16 or Ephesians 2:8 in a conversation were to result in someone’s salvation?
Fourth, have church invite cards ready.
A non-Christian meeting one Christian is good.
A non-Christian meeting a group of Christians is even better.
I’ve handed out church invite cards at coffee shops, while getting my hair cut, and even at the ward office.
My trick is to keep an invite card in my phone case, so it's always with me.
Last, come to English Connect.
The more Christians a non-Christian meets, the more likely they are to become a Christian.
Which is why every Thursday at 7pm, our church hosts an English outreach event called English Connect at Acros Fukuoka.

These are simple ways to share the gospel.
But they aren’t easy!
A lifestyle built around sharing the gospel will cost you.
Romans 10:15 says… “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
The Greek verb used in v15 for “preach the good news” is εὐαγγελίζω evangelizō.
This was not originally a religious word.
In Ancient Greek warfare, when a battle was won, there was a person whose entire job was to run back to the city and “preach the good news.”
Like, “I’ve come to bring you the good news that your King has won!”
Imagine you live in one of these cities.
Your King is away fighting, and you’re wondering if your city will be destroyed by the enemy.
But then… you see someone running to the city gates.
Their feet are all bruised and bloody from the long run.
And before a word comes out of their mouth you say: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
My two college classmates who shared the gospel with me when I was an angry atheist… have some beautiful feet.
And many of you do, too.
You’ve sacrificed everything to be in Japan and share the gospel.
Your feet may be bruised and bloody.
But in the eyes of God… they’re beautiful!

Church, our Savior came down from heaven and died on the cross to light the flame of the gospel.
Generations of Christians have dedicated their lives to passing on the flame of the gospel.
Now… its our turn.
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, we are unworthy servants.
Thank you for entrusting us with the glorious gospel.
Break our hearts for those who do not know this gospel.
Send us out with zeal for your glory.
We ask these things in Jesus' name.
Amen.
