1 Timothy 1:1-2

(See English below)

As 1 Timothy 1:5 says…

Imagine a man proposes to a woman.

He gets down on one knee, and says “will you marry me?”

With tears of joy in her eyes, the woman responds “YES!”

Then… to her shock, the man hands her a loose diamond with no ring.

That would be ridiculous right?

What man would give the woman he loves a precious diamond without any way to keep it safe or display it?

And yet… Christians do this all the time.

We give people the gospel detached from the church.

But when you come to Christ, he doesn’t hand you a “loose gospel.”

The gospel comes attached to a spiritual family, the church of the living God.

Today, we’re beginning a new eleven-week series called The Household of God

For the next 11 weeks, we’re gonna be going verse-by-verse through 1 Timothy in the New Testament.

This morning, I wanna consider why we need 1 Timothy.

But before we do that, I wanna spend just a couple minutes on the background of 1 Timothy.

***

To understand this letter, you have to understand its two main characters: Paul and Timothy.

1 Timothy 1:1 says this.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope.

What does it mean that Paul is an apostle?

Ephesians 2:20 says the church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets.

Just as the Old Testament prophets spoke with God’s authority to Israel, the apostles speak with God’s authority to the church.

“Apostle” is a pretty important job, how do you get hired for it?

1 Timothy 1:1 …by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus.

In Acts 26, Paul recounts how the risen Christ appointed him to be an apostle.

Jesus tells Paul… I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness.

The resurrected Christ appeared to Paul and appointed him to be a witness.

Which means 1 Timothy has authority for the church in every age.

This matters because 1 Timothy has some counter-cultural teachings about issues like homosexuality, gender roles, and money.

But to reject Paul’s teaching is to reject Christ who appointed him as an apostle.

Unlike most of Paul’s letters, 1 Timothy is written to a person, not a church.

1 Timothy 1:2… 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul and Timothy first meet in Acts 16, about 49 AD.

Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him…

So Paul takes Timothy on his 2nd missionary journey, where they preach the gospel and plant a church in Ephesus, a city in Western Turkey.

Like Fukuoka… Ephesus is a coastal city that's not massive, but growing.

Like Fukuoka... Ephesus is also full of idol worship and pagan immorality.

In such a spiritually dark context, the Ephesian church was beginning to have major issues.

And so Paul left Timothy there to help the church get healthy again.

Now in 62 AD, after 10+ years of ministry together, Paul writes to Timothy, his child in the faith.

1 Timothy is filled with wisdom for a new church plant with young leaders in an unreached city.

What could be more relevant to our church?

Church, we need 1 Timothy…

Here’s three reasons why.

First, we need to understand God’s design for the church.

1 Timothy 3:14 says this.

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.

Right here, Paul directly states the purpose of his letter, to know how one ought to behave in the church, the household of God.

This word “household” is used seven times in 1 Timothy.

Every time it's used, it refers to literal biological families… except for here in v14.

The church is NOT a religious club or a fancy building.

The church is a household… a family!

It's the perfect metaphor because the church should be warm and loving, like a family…

…and yet the church should also have defined roles, responsibilities, and structure, like a family.

Some years ago, a friend heard about our plans to start a church in Fukuoka.

She said to me “oh that’s so fun because you can make the church exactly how YOU like it.”

You see this mentality in Christians who shop for churches based on consumer preferences.

Like “I prefer a contemporary church” or “I connect more with traditional liturgy.”

Or, in church leaders who think “the Bible doesn’t say much about the church, so we’re free to do what we want.”

But… did you know we actually don’t have the freedom to do church the way we want to?

Because for one thing, the Bible actually tells us a lot about how to structure the church.

This is why Paul wrote 1 Timothy, so we can know how… to behave in the ekklesia, the assembly of the living God.

Which is why 1 Timothy is full of instructions for…

Worship gatherings (2:1-15)

Appointing leaders (3:1-13, 5:17-25)

Teaching sound doctrine (3:14-4:16)

Dealing with false teaching (1:18-20)

Caring for young and old, male and female, rich and poor (5:1-16)

But the even deeper reason we can’t just do what we want is because the church doesn’t belong to us!

Let's say you’re building a new house.

You’ve saved up for ten years, like “I’m not gonna eat out or take that fun trip.”

You hire me to build your house.

But after you sign the contract and 振り込み the money to me, I say this…

“Look, I really appreciate the instructions you gave me, but… I decided I’m gonna design your house the way that I like it.”

You’d say “Are you serious? I paid for this house with my own money, and I’m not gonna let someone who completely disregards my instructions build it.”

In Acts 20, Paul tells the pastors of the Ephesian church that their job is to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

People say “your church” and “our church.”

If the pastor is famous, they say “I go to so and so’s church.”

But the church belongs to Jesus, because he bought it with his own blood.

Christ’s church, Christ’s way.

***

Christ, the Great Architect, has designed his church with perfect wisdom.

In 1 Timothy 3:15, Paul said the church of the living God is a pillar and buttress of the truth.

Pillars uphold the roof of a building and keep it from collapsing.

In the same way, the living God preserves the truth of the gospel through his church.

When my wife and I got married, she wanted to use her grandma’s engagement ring.

When we had it cleaned, the jewelry store was really worried.

The ring is 75 years old so the gold setting that holds the diamond was worn down.

Which meant the diamond could fall out without her knowing.

In God’s design, the church is the gold setting protects and displays the diamond of the gospel.

The setting matters because the diamond matters.

We care about the church because we care about the gospel.

***

The gospel changes lives, which is why we want to protect it from false teaching.

Which brings us to the 2nd reason we need 1 Timothy

We need sound doctrine for godly living.

In 1 Timothy 1:3, Paul says he told Timothy to remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine.

Here’s what we know about the false teachers from 1 Timothy…

They were caught up in speculation (1:4)

They misused God’s Law (1:7)

They were immoral (1:19-20)

They had seared consciences (4:2)

They forbade marriage and certain foods (4:3)

They craved controversy and quarrels (6:4)

They used godliness as a means of financial gain (6:5)

What’s interesting is Paul is not concerned so much with the content of the false teaching, but the effects of it.

Because false teaching leads to immoral living.

Listen to what 1 Timothy 6:3 says…

3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.

Now here’s the scary nuance of all this…

These false teachers almost certainly identified as Christians.

They were pastors at the church.

They surely agreed that Jesus died on the cross and rose again.

They agreed with the historical facts of the gospel, but responded to it in the wrong way.

***

In every age of the church, there are basically two types of false teaching.

Legalism and easy-belivism.

Legalism says faith in Jesus + good works = salvation.

Easy-belivism says faith in Jesus + nothing = salvation.

These two counterfeit gospels seem like opposites, but really they’re the same.

Legalism and easy-belivism both diminish God’s law.

Legalism does this by creating its own man-made law.

Easy-belivism simply ignores God’s law.

And legalism and easy-belivism both make Christ a partial Savior.

Legalism says Jesus’ death was insufficient to save us, so we have to do good works to make up the difference.

Easy-belivism says Jesus' death saves us from the penalty of sin, but not the power of sin.

A half-truth is more dangerous than a lie.

Or as John Calvin puts it… “whoever wishes to have half of Christ loses the whole.”

Legalism and easy-belivism are not Christian teachings.

But tragically… thousands of buildings labeled “church” teach it and millions of people called “Christians” believe it.

This is why Paul writes to clearly teach us the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, 1 Timothy 1:11.

And what is the gospel?

1 Timothy 1:15… that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners!

You and I have sinned against God.

We owe a debt we could never repay.

But on the cross, Jesus totally paid our debt.

Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead.

And now, Jesus commands all people everywhere to repent and trust in him.

Everyone who believes receives forgiveness of sins and eternal life as a free gift.

The gospel says you can contribute nothing to your salvation except for the sin that made it necessary.

But the gospel also says a necessary result of salvation is a new life of following Jesus and doing good works.

So to return to our chart before…

The true gospel is faith in Jesus + nothing = salvation & good works.

Legalistic churches are full of people who never apologize.

Their whole identity is in being a moral person, they can never be told that they’re wrong.

Easy-believism churches are full of people who profess faith but look no different from the world.

And so the world isn’t very attracted to it.

But the true gospel produces people who are humble, because they know they’re sinners saved by grace.

And it produces people who are zealous for good works because they want to glorify the one who saved them.

False teaching leads to immoral living.

But sound doctrine leads to love.

As 1 Timothy 1:5 says…

5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

We wanna protect the true gospel so the church can be full of people who are changed by the gospel.

And, we want the church to be led by people who are changed by the gospel.

Lastly, we need wisdom to train + appoint qualified leaders.

Listen to what 1 Timothy 5:22 says about appointing church leaders.

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure…24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

In a context with so few Christians, it can be tempting to let just anyone be a leader.

But the surest way to wreck this church is to appoint leaders that aren’t qualified.

A study published in the International Journal of Aerospace Psychology found that

plane crashes are [quote] “significantly correlated with the personality of the captain.”

The researchers said “crews with captains who are warm, friendly, self-confident, and able to stand up to pressure make the fewest errors. Conversely, crews with captains who are arrogant, hostile, boastful, egotistical, passive-aggressive, or dictatorial make the most errors.”

Hundreds of people entrust their lives to airline pilots.

Hundreds, and in some cases thousands of people entrust their souls to pastors.

Which is why Paul says to pastor Timothy:

16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

***

So we need good church leaders but how do we get them?

In modern times, there has been an unhelpful “professionalisation” of ministry.

In the modern economy, if you wanna be an engineer, teacher, or nurse, you go to school.

So modern Christianity has often said… “wanna be a pastor? Go to seminary.”

Now I love seminary, I went to seminary.

But seminaries don’t make pastors, the church does.

This is a big emphasis in the African American church tradition.

Theologian Walter Strickland points out that even after slavery was abolished, black people were barred from formal theological education.

Strickland says the result was “[many African American pastors] weren’t trained formally as academics, but by ‘a father in the ministry’, a pastor who they would apprentice with. After years of being trained under his leadership, he would be sent out to pastor his own church.”

This is the biblical model for training church leaders.

Paul calls Timothy his “true child in the faith.”

This doesn’t mean he led Timothy to faith, he was already a Christian when Paul met him.

Paul is saying after 10+ years of ministry together, Paul is like “a father in the ministry to him.”

And now after training Timothy, Paul trusts him to train other leaders.

Listen to how Paul encourages Timothy in his leadership

1 Timothy 4:12, 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

We are a young church… we just started a year ago.

Many of us are young in the Christian faith.

Probably most of us aren’t going to do full-time ministry, but we wanna do big things for God.

We need an experienced and godly mentor.

We need someone to be “our father in the ministry.”

Which is why we need 1 Timothy.

Let’s pray.

Our Father, help us to be a church that brings glory to your name.

We don’t wanna do things our way, we wanna do things your way!

And God as we submit to your Word, would you bear fruit through us.

Use the Christians in this room to make disciples in Fukuoka.

We ask these things in Jesus’ name.

Amen.
