自分の証の伝え方 | How to Tell Your Testimony テモテへの手紙第一1章12-20 節 1 Timothy 1:12-20

(See English below)

—————————————————

The year is 2013.

You meet a college classmate who’s an atheist.

He rejects God, the supernatural, and life after death.

Christians find him to be arrogant and argumentative.

He mocks the claims of Christianity as superstitious and narrow-minded.

When invited to learn more about God, he flatly refuses.

He’s not from a religious family, but he says Christian school already taught him everything he needs to know.

If anyone were to win a contest for “least likely to become a Christian”, it's this guy right?

…except that guy is me… David Wissel, and now I’m a Christian pastor.

Not every Christian has a testimony like mine.

Paul and Timothy, the two main characters of 1 Timothy, are a great example of this.

Some Christians have a testimony like Paul.

One moment Paul was “breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord…”

And then the very next moment, the Lord Jesus appears and radically converts him on the Road to Damascus.

It's easy to get a rise out of people with a “shocking conversion story” like that.

However, many Christians have a testimony like Timothy.

Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice were devout Christians.

Which is why Paul says to Timothy… “from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Now I’m grateful to God for saving me and giving me a testimony I can use in evangelism.

But which testimony do I want for my kids…. Paul or Timothy?

Without a doubt, Timothy, the “boring” one where they always knew the gospel.

I said “boring” sarcastically… because to God, no salvation story is boring.

Every salvation is nothing less than a sinner brought from death to life.

And God intends to use every salvation story to bring glory to himself.

The problem is not your testimony… just the way you tell it.

Thankfully, 1 Timothy 1:12-20 has wisdom for sharing about all our Lord has done for us.

So let's consider… five tips on how to tell your testimony.

Tip #1: Be vulnerable (v12-13)

Paul says this in v12.

12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief

Before Christ, Paul was the kinda guy you’d see on a 指名手配リスト, a “most wanted list.”

Although he was a Bible-believing Jew, Paul says he was a blasphemer, because he rejected Christ.

He was a persecutor, and insolent opponent of the church.

Acts 8 says he witnessed and approved of the murder of Stephen, the first Christian martyr.

Paul persecuted many other Christians to the death.

When the Jewish religious leaders put Christians to death, Paul cast [his] vote against them.

Something Paul does well is naming his specific sins without getting into the gritty details.

We don’t want to embellish our story or be graphic.

But we also shouldn't make our life before Christ look better than it really was.

What specific sins characterized your life before Jesus?

What sins were you guilty of that Jesus needed to save you from?

In my case, I was arrogant and self-righteous before Christ.

I thought I was stronger than religious people who couldn’t accept the hard truths of life and needed God to help them.

And if there was a heaven, I thought, “surely God will let me in… ‘cause I’m a good dude.”

A well-told testimony gets the same reaction Paul reports in Galatians 1:23.

23 …“He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they glorified God because of me.

Talk honestly about your sin so The One who saved you from it gets the glory he deserves.

Which brings us to our second point.

Tip# 2: point to Jesus (v14-15).

v14: 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

In the previous passage, Paul said the law is… laid down for… murders, liars, the sexually immoral, enslavers— that is, lawless sinners who proudly defy God.

Perhaps Paul could sound self-righteous… like “YOU bad people over there.”

But in pointing the finger at us, Paul points the finger at himself because he WAS one of these sinners.

Paul… and you and I… are the perfect candidate for a smackdown from God.

But this is the good news of the gospel… v15: Christ came into the world to save sinners.

Jesus Christ, God the Son eternal, came down from heaven to seek and save the lost.

Jesus lived a perfect life with no sin.

He died on a cross, taking the penalty for our sin.

Three days later, he rose from the dead.

And non-Christian friends… here's what that means for you…

If you turn from your sins and trust in Christ, you will be forgiven and reconciled to God for all eternity.

***

For Paul, this isn’t some kind of generic proposition.

No, the gospel is so real and personal for Paul.

the grace of our Lord overflowed for me.

“Jesus Christ set his affections on me: a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent… 罪人のかしら the foremost of sinners.”

Now Paul’s not saying he’s literally the worst person ever.

He’s saying he can’t imagine someone worse than himself.

This is what the gospel does to you.

The gospel sets you free from the self-righteous impulse to become an expert in other people’s sins.

By calling himself “the foremost of sinners”, Paul points us to an ironic truth in the Christian life.

The holier you become, the more sinful you feel.

That’s because as time goes on, you understand more and more of… a) your sin, and b) God’s holiness.

But that makes Jesus' death on the cross more and more precious to you.

***

Paul’s testimony is centered on Christ.

Paul doesn’t just recount the events of his life with no theological interpretation.

Christian, sharing your testimony is not telling your life story.

Not every detail of your childhood is required to point people to Jesus.

And sharing your testimony is not evangelism… unless it contains the claims of the gospel.

I know this can be tough for people who knew the gospel from a young age.

What I recommend is taking one thread, one gospel truth that helped you, and run it through your whole story.

Maybe God’s forgiveness erased your shame.

Maybe God’s providence comforted your anxiety.

Maybe God’s acceptance cured your addiction to people-pleasing.

However you choose to frame it, the key question is this:

Does the way you tell your testimony make Jesus the hero?

***

So remember how I told my Christian friend I wasn’t interested in the Bible?

The next day she showed up to class with a Bible.

Now, I thought Christianity was absolutely ridiculous.

But I was just a little curious, so I opened the Bible she gave me.

When I read Luke chapter one, verse one, I was an atheist.

But by the time I got to Luke chapter 7, I was a Christian.

It was a story where Jesus was having dinner with the Pharisees, the Jewish religious leaders.

A sinful woman barges in and weeps at Jesus' feet because of her sins.

The self-righteous Pharisees criticize Jesus for receiving the woman.

Jesus says this in response.

44 … Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair… 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.

As I read, what my classmates were saying finally made sense.

I realized I was like the Pharisees who thought they were too good for Jesus.

I wanted to become like the sinful woman who put all her trust in Jesus.

And then I read these words as if Jesus was speaking directly to me…

50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

It was like a switch being flipped.

Suddenly the gospel felt not only real, but like it was good news for me!

Which brings us to our third point.

Tip #3: Apply to listeners (v16).

Now when I share the gospel and say that anyone can be forgiven of their sins…

…the number one question I get is “well what about a murderer”, “what about someone who commits an unspeakable crime, can they be saved?”

Paul’s testimony is the answer to that question…

v16: But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

Paul says “if God can save me, he can save anyone!”

God gave us Paul’s story as the ultimate example that even the worst sinner can believe in Christ for eternal life.

Paul’s story is extreme and unique, but it's good news for everyone.

Whatever you’ve done… you are not beyond the reach of God’s grace this morning.

***

Remember Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose death Paul approved of?

This was his dying prayer… “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”

And Paul was the answer to that prayer!

As one person observed: the apostle Paul entered heaven to the cheers of those he martyred. That’s how the gospel works.

You might be familiar with Paul’s story, but don’t lose sight of how radical it is for a murderer to go to heaven!

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the most evil people who ever lived.

He brutally murdered 17 people.

After he was sentenced to many lifetimes in prison, a pastor named Roy Ratcliff visited him and shared the gospel.

Dahmer confessed faith in Christ and was baptized.

In his memoir about ministering to Dahmer, pastor Ratcliff writes this.

Jeff confessed to me his great remorse for his crimes. He wished he could do something for the families of his victims to make it right, but there was nothing he could do. He turned to God because there was no one else to turn to, but he showed great courage in daring to ask the question, ‘Is heaven for me too?’

God will be the judge of whether Dahmer’s repentance was genuine.

But if you do meet Jeffrey Dahmer in heaven, you will say “only God is capable of doing that!”

Which brings us to our fourth tip.

Tip #4: give God glory (v17).

When Paul considers God’s mercy, he gives God glory.

v17: To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

The only God is invisible.

But Christ, who came into the world to save sinners, is the image of the invisible God.

Without Christ, we can’t know God.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:27… “no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

The ones to whom Jesus chooses to reveal God aren’t inherently better than anyone else.

If a Christian is asked “why did God save you?”

We should never say… “well, because I…”

No… the only reason anyone is saved is God’s sovereign mercy, for which he gets all glory.

As Augustine once wrote… “O Lord, everything good in me is due to you. The rest is my fault.”

***

A skeptic may refute an argument, but they can't disprove what God did in your life.

A well-told testimony is a powerful tool for sharing the gospel.

But a huge obstacle to the gospel is when people claim Christ but live like the Devil.

Last point, tip #5: expose counterfeits (v18-20).

A survey found that 72% of non-religious people believe [quote] "the church is full of hypocrites."

The greatest threat to our collective testimony as a church is hypocrisy.

So what do we do about it?

v18: 18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience…

Paul says the Christian life is good warfare.

The war is fought with faith and a good conscience.

John Calvin says “The torture of a bad conscience is the hell of a living soul.”

So Christian, do everything you can to maintain a clear conscience before God.

Remind yourself every morning “God accepts me, not because of my works, but because Jesus Christ is my righteousness.”

Maintain a tender conscience where you’re quick to repent and confess sin.

Because here’s what happens when we don’t fight for a good conscience.

v19: 19 …By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Have you ever set like 20 alarms because you’re afraid to oversleep?

When one goes off, you press snooze.

“I’ll just rest my eyes for ten minutes…” and then an hour later I’m late!

That’s what Hymenaeus and Alexander were doing to their conscience.

Every time you sin, your conscience sounds the alarm like “that’s wrong.”

But if you keep pressing snooze, eventually you become hardened in sin.

These men made shipwreck of their faith with false doctrine and seared consciences.

Hymenaeus, according to 2 Timothy 2:18, upset people’s faith by saying the resurrection has already happened.

2 Timothy 4:14 says Alexander the coppersmith did Paul great harm and he strongly opposed the gospel message.

But ok what does Paul mean by handing them over to Satan?

Paul says something similar to the Corinthian church about a professing Christian in unrepentant sexual sin.

1 Corinthians 5… 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Paul is not a 21st-century person.

He believes Christianity is supernatural.

He has a high view of the church.

I believe Paul teaches the concepts of church membership and discipline here.

Through membership, the church formally recognizes who belongs to Jesus.

But through church discipline, the church formally revokes that recognition.

Like “we love you, we urge you to repent, but it wouldn’t be loving to think of you as a Christian right now.”

It's been said, when discipline leaves a church, Christ goes with it.

Because when we let people live in unrepentant sin, it waters down the definition of what it means to be a Christian.

A friend of mine was part of a church where just about everyone was living a double life of sin.

The pastor privately held to heretical theology he knew his church might fire him for.

It confused her for years on what God expects of his people.

And it was a terrible testimony to the gospel.

Be vulnerable, point to Jesus, apply to listeners, give God glory, and expose counterfeits.

That’s how you tell a Christ-centered testimony.

Christian, if you wanna get started with this, take a look at the “telling your testimony” worksheet on your chair.

Non-Christian friends, look to Christ whose grace overflows for you this morning.

It's my prayer that God will someday tell an incredible story of salvation through you.

Let’s pray.

Our Father, what a joy to speak about all you’ve done for us in Christ.

Help us, both individually and as a church, to give a compelling testimony to your love.

We ask these things in Jesus’ name.

Amen
