神様は全ての人を救いたいのか?|Does God Want To Save Everyone? 1 Timothy 2:1-7
(See English below)

John Stott, a theologian and pastor I really enjoy reading, tells this story: “I remember some years ago visiting a church incognito. When we came to the pastoral prayer, it was led by a lay brother, because the pastor was on holiday. So he prayed that the pastor might have a good holiday. Well, that’s fine. Pastors should have good holidays. Second, he prayed for a lady member of the church who was about to give birth to a child, that she might have a safe delivery, which is fine. Third, he prayed for another lady who was sick, and then it was over. That’s all there was. It took twenty seconds. I said to myself, it’s a village church with a village God.”
In today’s text God asks us to pray some pretty big prayers. and I wonder if the prayers of this local family of God match the scope of the infinite God we serve.
This brings us to today's main point: We should pray for all people because God wants them to be saved through Jesus. And today we will be breaking down each section of this idea to understand God’s word more.
Lets read again 1 Tim 2:1-3: First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, As the first instruction given to Timothy, Paul asks that he has everyone pray for all people. He uses here four words that are all very similar in meaning, but together basically just mean “to pray”. Prayer is when we talk to God, either together in a corporate fashion like at church, or by ourselves privately. When we talk to God and ask him for things that he wants us to pray for, we align our hearts with the heart of God. God has asked us to pray for certain things all over the Bible. In Mat 6 he asks us to pray that his kingdom comes and will be done.Later in that chapter we are to pray for God to give us our needs, and to forgive us for our sins and help us to forgive others. In Matt. 9:38 Jesus tells us to pray for more people to work to spread the Gospel. And here in 1 Timothy 2 God wants us to pray for the salvation of all people and to let the authorities look on Christians favorably. God desires these things too and so when we pray for them, our hearts' desires align with God’s desires. Verse 4 tells us another desire of Gods that we are to pray towards: who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. God wants us to pray for the salvation of all people. He wants this because he loves all people, and as we pray to this end, we love closer to how Jesus loves. In the act of prayer we are transformed more into the image of his son Jesus. This also aligns with Paul’s desire for us to lead peaceful and quiet lives. Part of what we are to pray for are: kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life. In the time of 1 Timothy, being a Christians was a dangerous thing to be. It was technically illegal to be a Christian and if the local ruler or governor of your area decided to persecute you, they could without recourse. Part of keeping a good relationship with the Roman authorities who were in charge at the time was to pray for the rulers publicly. This showed everyone that Christians wanted the flourishing of the empire. In doing so, and mainly through the granted prayers in the power of God, if the authorities leave Christians alone, allow them to live peaceful and quiet lives, how much easier is it to become Godly. If you are not being persecuted, if you are not worried about being arrested for your faith, or being denied to buy food by the local merchant, it is much easier to focus on living a Godly life. If you're not persecuted, all you need to worry about is your holiness, loving your neighbors and church community Christians, we should pray towards this end today. You might think it unlikely that in our free and relatively wealthy society that we could be persecuted for our faith, but it is not as unlikely as you think. At the beginning of the twentieth century Russia was a Christian kingdom where the vast majority of citizens were Christian and so were all the rulers. In 1903 a small group of men broke away from their political party in Russia. In 1912 they formally created the Bolsheviek party and by 1917 they had completely taken over the government and formally started persecuting Christians, destroying churches and executing the clergy. Friends, we should actively be praying for our leaders and all people that we can continue to live a peaceful and quiet life. God also commands us to pray for them because he wants kings’ souls too. He loves them too. And if the people in authority became Christians, how much easier would it be to spread the Gospel! If those in authority are also Christians, how much more sympathetic to the Gospel mission! Imagine if Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi genuinely became a Christian! How would that change the government of Japan and our ability to spread the Gospel here to the 99% of people who have not yet heard the gospel? When we pray for all people our hearts align with God to accomplish his work on earth. One of the desires of God made plain in this passage is his desire for all people to be saved.
Verse 4 says: who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Which brings us to our second section: We should pray for all people because God wants them to be saved through Jesus.
Before we interpret this, I want to make a few observations. The first is: How amazing is the love of God! There is no exclusion in him. He wants all people! For Paul's time that meant Jews and Gentiles, people who were “in” as God’s people, BUT ALSO those who were new to faith, who had been pagans their whole lives. God wants their souls. For them and us now too it means God wants the poor and the rich, the young and the old, the citizen and the immigrant, the tattooed rough man who has been violent his whole life, and the sweet grandma who takes care of cats on sparsely populated islands. It means he wants the children at the park you walk by on your way to work. He wants the hardened criminal who has been in prison. He wants your coworkers. He wants the noisy neighbor who wakes you up at night. He wants your family who you have a strained relationship with. He wants everyone. No one is excluded, no one is too far gone. This is revolutionary. Throughout history, groups, cultures, and religions only wanted to include people like themselves, but in God’s family, in his ideal, all things are turned upside down. We became so used to the sinful broken world that came about from the fall that we all collectively as humanity have forgotten what good looks like. Jesus, when he died on the cross and rose again, began the process of turning things right side up again. This is what God wants his people to look like: All types of people, together. The Household of God is diverse and expansive.
Now you may be wondering what exactly it means that God desires all people to be saved.
We believe as Christians that people are only saved when they believe in Jesus, but we know that not everyone in the world believes in Jesus. How can God not get what he wants? I think the best and easiest way to explain that is: God wants something greater. God desires Holiness and the end of evil more than he wants people to be saved. Now in truth, God wants all people to be saved. He loves them and wants to be with them forever in heaven. He made them, he made you, and he wants to be reconciled to you. Sin stands in the way. When we sin, we reject God. With our actions we decide we would rather have our own will than Gods and God hates sin. God hates evil, he will not tolerate it. God's character, his being is all good, there is no evil in him, no darkness at all. Something must be done for the evil and wrong we have committed. Everyone has sinned but everyone can be saved. Praise God he has made a way, through the mediator Jesus Christ. He gave himself as a ransom to save you, to stand between God, the righteous and Just, and then take into his own body God’s wrath that was for you. Without this there would be no forgiveness for sin. There would be no way for anyone to be saved, but Jesus saves us through his blood and makes us able to be a family with God again.
You might be asking, well couldn’t God just choose to forgive everyone? He is God, he is all powerful, can't he do this too? God’s plan is of course better than the one we can come up with. For God to forgive everyone, regardless of their relationship with Jesus, would mean the unrepentant murderer, the prideful, arrogant sexual abuser, the greedy oppressor who hurts the poor and helpless for his own gain would go unpunished. They would experience the same reward as those who have loved God and served him and have been transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ. This would be a grave injustice, which is not in God’s nature. God hates evil. If he loved it or chose to turn the other way to it, there would be no justice for the murder victim or the rape victim. No justice for the poor woman who died of hunger or disease for lack of money. In God’s perfect plan he gets justice, holiness, the eradication of evil, and the ability for everyone to be saved. Through Jesus all people have the opportunity to be saved. Everyone who takes it has their sins paid for through Jesus' blood and then is transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ. They have no record of wrong because Jesus has washed it away. Then those people begin to be holy and righteous on earth and then fully righteous with God in heaven through the process called sanctification. All people who do not choose to be saved through Jesus receive the just punishment for their sins. God gets both things he wants! If God’s plan is still not convincing to you, I want to assure you of this: God loves you, he wants you, and he wants you so badly in Christ he suffered on the cross to make this happen. God put his money where his mouth was. If everyone is forgiven, it means that Jesus died in vain. Jesus, the perfect, holy, and precious God loved you so much he came to earth, lived a humble life, was beaten and mocked, and died a gruesome death to save you and bring about the salvation of the world. To save everyone, regardless of their relationship with Jesus, would cheapen the cross. It would turn the vaults of diamonds, gold, and silver into a combini-20 yen 割引 for the next bottle of water.
Which actually brings us to the next section: We should pray for all people because God wants them to be saved through Jesus.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all,
First, there is only one God. This means for us that there is only one way to be saved and only one God to have a relationship with. We do not have to go around, trying to find the best parts of the world's religious systems, trying to be the perfect person who discovers the just-right-perfect way to live. Instead there is only one God and praise him, he loves us and has given us his word to tell us exactly how to be in his good graces: believe in Jesus. Who is the one mediator between God and man. God is holy and perfect. Mediation is a difficult process. Often it does not go to plan and ends up in stalemates or unfair deals. We have been seeing a lot of mediation in the news lately. The United States is trying to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Pakistan has been trying to mediate between the US and Iran. Both of those mediations have not been very successful. Good mediation works when both sides’ interests are represented and understood well and then both sides get some or all of the goals they want accomplished. Man is often not good at this and how much more difficult it would be to mediate between imperfect humans and a holy God. As sinful mortal human beings, we need a mediator. Jesus is that perfect mediator. He perfectly understands both what God wants and what we want. He understands perfectly both God’s perspective and ours. And only through him can we again be at peace with God. This is why other mediators do not work. Christians do not pray to our ancestors because even if they are in heaven with God, they do not have God’s perspective and ours. They do not have the power or authority to “make a deal” so to speak with God. They are only people just like us. Saints are the same. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches teach prayer to saints but Protestants do not because, from this verse, we believe that they cannot mediate for us either because they are only humans like us. Even angels or other spiritual beings cannot mediate for us, only Jesus. No other mediator will do, all others should be rejected. Which is actually such good news for us because our mediator loves us so much that he gave himself as a ransom for all. He gave himself for us. Out of his great love. And here again is the words “for all.” No one is excluded, everyone is invited. This Gospel is the only one that saves only through Jesus can we have a right relationship with God and come back into his family.

When I heard the story I told earlier about the theologian sitting in the back of the church, I considered my own prayers and how I would pray if asked to pray pastorally for this church. If I was I think I would pray this:
Non- Christian friends with us today, my prayer for you is that you would come to trust come to the knowledge of the truth and fully trust Jesus for your salvation. Christians, I pray that you would have a larger powerful scope to your prayers. That you would not be afraid to pray for miracles and radical conversions and for the unlikeliest of sinners to come to faith.
In our prayers do we really believe that God is bigger than the small things that affect us day to day. Do we have a village God or do we pray to the God of the whole universe? On that note, lets pray:
Lord God of Hosts, we praise your mighty name.
I thank you for the ability to meet here and worship you freely.
I pray for all the people of this nation, that they would come to the knowledge of the truth.
I pray for Prime Minister Takaichi that you would give her wisdom to make good decisions.
I pray for Mayor Takashima as he finishes out his last term that you would help him and his successor govern well.
I pray that you would give us a greater understanding of your heart for the world.
Come again soon Lord Jesus.
Amen.
