教会の男性と女性|Men and Women in the Church テモテへの手紙第一2章8-15節 1 Timothy 2:8-15

(See English below)

What is the #1 objection to Christianity?

Well, it depends on which era of history we’re talking about.

In the Ancient Greco-Roman world, this was a top objection.

“Christianity is too welcoming of women.”

Celsus, a Greek philosopher and critic of Christianity, said this.

Christians show that they want and are only able to convince the foolish, dishonorable and stupid, only slaves, women and little children.

Christianity went against the Greco-Roman values of masculinity and strength.

After all, it's a religion about a strong man (Jesus) giving up his power and dying for the weak.

In this culture, Christianity was extremely popular with women.

In his book, The Rise of Christianity, sociologist Rodney Stark examines census data from the Roman Empire.

In that day, women were just 1/3rd of the population, since many died in childbirth.

But women made up 2/3rds of the early Christian church.

We live in a very different world today.

Years ago, I was a pastor in a progressive city on the US East Coast.

In college, my wife studied human rights and took classes in feminist legal theory.

Back then, the #1 objection we heard was… “Christianity is bad for women.”

As evidence, people would cite today’s text, 1 Timothy 2:8-15.

Many feminists call it a “text of terror.”

Some say we need to get rid of it.

Others say we must radically re-interpret it.

But even this objection is a little dated now.

Today, the very idea that there are men and women is under attack.

Many distinguish… biological sex from gender.

Simone de Beauvoir, a French second-wave feminist, greatly influenced this idea.

In 1949, she wrote: One is not born, but rather becomes, woman… It is not the body-object described by scientists that exists concretely but the body lived by the subject. The female is a woman, insofar as she feels herself as such… Nature does not define woman: it is she who defines herself by reclaiming nature for herself in her affectivity.

Translation… “my body’s biology or society’s expectations don’t have authority over how I feel about my gender identity."

You might think de Beauvoir is radical… but her ideas have influenced all of us.

In modern society, gender distinctions are downplayed as much as possible.

Even in the church, people say “stop talking about biblical manhood and womanhood, talk about Christ-likeness.”

21st-century people tend to think of men and women as basically interchangeable.

But 1 Timothy 2 has a different perspective… which is today's main point.

We can not only accept, but celebrate God’s rules and roles for men and women in the church.

So let's talk about rules and roles for men and women in the church.

First, rules for men and women in the church (v8-10)

They say there's three rules for real estate.

LOCATION… LOCATION… LOCATION.

For interpreting the Bible… its CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT.

And the context of today's passage are Paul’s instructions for church gatherings.

1 Timothy 3:14… I am writing these things to you [that is, everything in 1 Timothy 2 and 3] so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God.

At church gatherings in Ephesus, the men were being divisive.

v8: I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands…

“Hands” is a metaphor the Bible uses to represent your deeds.

So Paul says to men “don’t say you love Jesus on Sunday but live like Satan on Monday.”

Paul wants men to come to public worship with the right heart posture.

Because in the Ephesian church, the men were coming just to debate theology.

v8… the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling

Anger is a destructive sin that is characteristic of men.

In the US, 93% of prisoners are men.

In Japan, it's 91%.

In both countries, over 70% are in prison for violent crimes.

Men, do you idolize being right and getting the last word?

Do you get frustrated when people challenge your idols of comfort or power?

Women, who would you rather marry?

A man who’s angry and argumentative… or one who is holy and prayerful?

***

At Timothy's church, while the men were being divisive, the women were being distracting.

v9: likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Women in the Ephesian church were so preoccupied with their physical appearance that it was distracting them from good works.

In the ancient Middle-East, something like braided hair was very sexualized.

We learn from 1 Corinthians 11:13 that it was considered improper for women not to cover up their hair.

So when it comes to this command for modesty and self-control we have to admit it's somewhat subjective and culturally-determined.

Every individual and culture has a different standard of modesty.

HOWEVER… God cares about motivations.

So women… do you deliberately dress in a certain way to get attention or power?

Intentionally leading others into sin… is sin.

Now, I’m sure the vast majority of Christian women don’t want to lead anyone into sin.

And, you’re not ultimately responsible for other people’s choices.

But… being thoughtful about how you present yourself is a way you can love others and glorify God.

***

Now, should men also be modest?

Of course!

Should women avoid sinful anger?

Yes!

But that's not the point.

These commands for men and women are different because gender realities affect Christian discipleship.

The bodies God gave us, with their differing levels of testosterone and estrogen, affect how we experience the world.

Not everyone is a stereotypical girly girl, or manly man.

We get into trouble when we’re hyper-specific on what it looks like to be a man or woman.

But… there are basic intuitions we all share.

Kevin DeYoung, a pastor, had a great example of this.

Can "real men" enjoy musical theater, ballet, or shopping? Of course they can. On the other hand, if you were discipling a young man who told you he wears pink pajamas, he loves to get his nails done every week, and he would make his wife confront an intruder in the home, you may need to have a conversation about whether he's appropriately expressing his masculinity.

As a dad to two young girls, I’ve never been more aware of gender differences.

When I’m out with my daughters somewhere, here's how most random men react to a cute baby.

“...cute baby.”

But almost 100% of girls and women of all ages… absolutely melt.

My girls were nurturing others as soon as they could walk.

They take care of their baby dolls, each other, even dad!

We see this in the narrative of Genesis.

Adam’s role is to name, tame, and protect.

But Eve’s role is to nurture, help, and support.

Gender based-roles in the church are not arbitrary rules for androgynous people.

Gender roles reflect God’s wise design of male and female.

All this is critical for the next section.

Second point, roles for men and women in the church (v11-15).

Every word in this next section is controversial and disputed.

So let’s look carefully at each verse.

v11: Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.

Modern people read this as Paul telling women to “shut up.”

But that’s not what’s going on.

The original word here is ἡσυχίᾳ hēsychia.

This word is used in Acts 22:2 for when a noisy crowd Paul is speaking to is finally silent and locked in.

This is the kind of attentive silence when an audience is hanging on every word.

So what Paul is saying is that at church gatherings, women must be quiet learners.

Which by the way… men should also be quiet during the sermon!

But why is Paul singling out women here?

Because when it comes to the public teaching of the gathered church, women are to be learners and not teachers.

v12: I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

The word in the Japanese Bible for exercise authority (支配したり) is unfortunate because its conveys a negative nuance whereas the original Greek αὐθεντεῖν authentein is much more neutral.

So it's not saying “women must not teach men in a domineering way.”

It's saying “women must not authoritatively teach the gathered church.”

Every interpreter of 1 Timothy 2:12 must answer a question…

Something is being forbidden here… what is it?

Our answer is that Paul is prohibiting women from teaching the gathered church, like in a sermon.

We believe that pastors, overseers, and elders are the same office.

And a major function of this office is teaching with authority.

1 Timothy 5:17… Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

It's important to know what’s not being said here.

Paul is not forbidding women from all teaching.

In Colossians 3, Paul says church members, both men and women, are to “teach and admonish one another.”

In 2 Timothy 3, Paul praises Timothy’s mom and grandma for teaching him the Bible.

In Titus 2, Paul says women should teach other women.

Paul is also not forbidding women from speaking at a church service.

In 1 Corinthians 11:4, Paul gives instructions for women who pray or prophecy publicly at the church gathering.

This means women can teach men in an informal way, but not authoritatively, at a church gathering, in a sermon.

If you think “that feels like an arbitrary difference”, consider this.

How do you receive the teaching in the following two contexts?

A guy at Bible study, who just got baptized, says “I think the text means this.”

VS… The pastor in a sermon who says “here is what God’s Word means for your life.”

Authority flows from the pulpit.

Informal teaching and pastoral teaching are both helpful… one lands with more weight.

Let's address a couple objections.

In recent years, some scholars have argued Paul was prohibiting female teaching in Ephesus because of the hyper-feminist cult of Artemis.

So perhaps the women, new to Christianity, assumed they would be in charge of the men like they were at the pagan temple.

So, they say, Paul’s command is just a unique cultural situation that doesn’t apply today.

However, evidence for this female-led cult in Ephesus is lacking, and its existence is debated.

What’s more, there is zero evidence of this background in the inspired text.

So why should we let a speculative and debated historical reconstruction determine how we interpret the Bible?

Most importantly, Paul grounds his prohibition in the created order.

12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve

What could be more timeless and trans-cultural than Genesis 1-3?

Other arguments come from experience.

Some say “I was at a church with a wonderful female pastor.”

I don’t doubt that God really used her ministry!

But the Bible and church history show us godly people can be very wrong and yet God still uses them.

Some say “God gave me a teaching gift. Ministry is about gifts, not gender.”

But the same Holy Spirit who gave you that gift, also inspired the Bible, and he would never lead you to use it in a way that goes against the Bible.

Kathy Keller, wife of pastor Tim Keller, was once studying to be ordained as a pastor.

But after taking a seminary class with the legendary missionary Elizabeth Elliot, she changed her mind.

Kathy Keller recounts something Elliot said in class.

"I am better versed in Hebrew and Greek than any of you, as well as multiple other languages. I have more communication skills than do any of you, male or female. I am comfortable speaking in front of large crowds and skillful in one-to-one conversations. I have a depth of understanding of God born of suffering that few of you will match. My giftedness is far beyond most of you. And yet God has not called me to use those gifts in an ordained capacity. Does that mean they are of less worth? I know that not to be true. Calling is different from giftedness or even desire.”

Some say “1 Timothy 2:12 is unclear, there’s so much debate, I can’t decide.”

But is it really that unclear?

Australian Bible scholar Claire Smith was once studying the Bible with a university-aged woman.

She was a recent immigrant to Australia from a non-Western country and also a brand-new Christian.

They came to 1 Timothy 2:12.

It was the first time she ever read it, so Smith asked if she found it difficult.

She said… “No, it's easy. Paul is saying women shouldn't teach in church, because that's the way God wants it.”

And this is exactly how 1 Timothy 2:12 has been understood for almost the entire history of the church.

Some who accept basically everything so far… still stumble over this next passage.

v13: For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

A superficial reading is “women are more easily deceived.”

But Paul is just talking about the sequence of events in Genesis.

First, God created Adam (Genesis 2:7).

Second, God gave Adam the command to not eat from the tree of life (Genesis 2:16-17).

Third, Eve listens to the Serpent’s lies and misleads Adam (Genesis 3:1-6).

How is that relevant?

Because God gave Adam his Word, before Eve was even created, with the expectation that he would teach it to his wife.

Which is why after Adam and Eve sin, God confronts Adam…

But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

Ephesians 5 tells us a husband is to wash his wife with the water of the Word.

And the church, as the household of God, is to reflect this pattern.

***

Believe it or not, we still haven’t discussed the most controversial verse.

v15: Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

The confusion comes down to this.

Many think of salvation only as the initial moment of conversion, becoming a Christian.

But the Bible talks about salvation in three dimensions: justification, glorification, and sanctification.

Paul is not talking about justification, the moment where God declares a person righteous and gives them eternal life.

Paul makes it clear in Romans 3:28 and Galatians 2:16 that justification is by faith alone… not by having a baby.

No, Paul’s talking about salvation in the sense of sanctification and glorification.

This is future tense… “she will be saved.”

And this final salvation is conditional upon perseverance “if they continue in faith.”

So… “saved through childbearing” means giving birth to children is helpful for growth and perseverance in the Christian faith.

***

I need to make some important qualifications.

For various reasons, not every woman will have a child.

Some women will never be married.

The Bible neither mandates marriage, nor says it's superior to being single.

Some women who are married will never have children for medical reasons.

That being said, I worry modern society has convinced many Christian women that being a mother is an inferior calling.

But that’s an absolute lie!!!

Jesus says childbirth itself is a picture of the gospel.

John 16: 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice…

Like a woman giving birth, the sorrow of the cross turned into the joy of salvation.

The result of Jesus’ pain and suffering is new life for all who believe.

After my wife gave birth, I said “God made me a man because he knew I’m not strong enough to be a woman.”

As a man, I will never understand the unbelievable suffering of childbirth that brings new life.

But Christian, can’t we say the same thing about Jesus?

We will never understand the suffering Jesus went through for our salvation, taking on God’s wrath… but we have life because of it!

A lot of people think public ministry to adults is the only fruitful ministry.

But is it possible more people will be in heaven because of godly moms than faithful pastors?

Susannah Wesley was the mother of John and Charles Wesley.

John and Charles remembered how in a house with 19 kids, she would pull her apron over her head for a quiet moment of prayer.

Her devotion to Christ left an incredible impact on her sons.

During his lifetime, John Wesley preached more than 40,000 sermons and rode over 400,000 kilometers on horseback.

Charles Wesley wrote over 6,000 hymns, including “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

The Wesley brothers worked in ministry together for 60 years, and founded the Methodist church, which today has 80 million members.

One historian said this about Susannah Wesley…

“Although she never preached a sermon or published a book or founded a church, she is known as the Mother of Methodism. Why? Because two of her sons, John Wesley and Charles Wesley applied the example, teachings, and circumstances of their home life.”

The Devil hates Christian mothers.

He hates the world being filled with more image bearers of God.

He hates godly moms raising their kids in the faith.

And most of all, he hates childbirth because it signals his defeat.

In Genesis 3:15, God cursed the Serpent who deceived Eve.

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

The offspring of the woman, the One who would crush Satan, is Jesus Christ.

4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law.

So actually, we are all saved by childbirth…

…the birth of Jesus Christ.

Let’s pray.

Our Father, help us see your design of male and female as beautiful and good.

Give us wisdom for living out the rules and roles you’ve given us as your image-bearers.

Above all, direct our eyes to Jesus, the image of God, who came to restore us to your image.

We ask these things in his name.

Amen.
