イギリスのある大学のクリスチャンのクラブで、少し変わったアウトリーチが行われたことがあります。それは、キリスト教に関する会話を始めるきっかけを作るために、ローマ人への手紙1章18〜32節を、節番号や見出しを外して、現代的なフォーマットで印刷し、学生たちに配るというものでした。
しかし配り始めたあとすぐに、大学のアドミンに呼び出されました。「この文書は不快だ、このクラブは検閲の対象にする」とアドミンたちに言われました。さらに、彼らはそれが聖書そのままの言葉だとは全く気づかず、「一体どの学生がこんな文章を書いたのか」と問い詰めました。
また、中国・広州で宣教師がノンクリスチャンの男性と一緒にローマ人への手紙1章を読んだとき、その男性は、「これは絶対に2000年前のパウロが書いたものではない。きっと今の中国にいる宣教師が書いたに違いない」と言い張りました。
ローマ人への手紙は2000年前に書かれた物なのに、どの時代、どの文化においても、読む人を挑発し、時に不快にさせる力を持っています。
ある時、こんなツイートを見ました。「ローマ人への手紙を読むのは、顔面にパンチをくらうようなものだ…ただし、パンチをするのはイエスだけで、そのパンチはあなたの魂から腫瘍を取り除くためのものなんだ。」
ローマ1章18〜32節が読む人にとって不快な箇所なのは、あなたが罪人であり、神様の裁きを受けるに値する者だと告げているからです。
しかし、聖書が悪い知らせを語る目的は、良い知らせを信じさせるためです。なぜなら、イエス様についての良い知らせは、罪という悪い知らせを理解したときに初めて意味を持つからです。
ローマ1章16節には「私は福音を恥としません。福音は、・・・信じるすべての人に救いをもたらす神の力です。」とあります。
これこそが福音の良い知らせです。イエス・キリストを信じる者はだれでも、神の恵みによって救いを受け取ることができる のです。
しかし、ここで、「私たちは「何から」救われるのか？」「一体何からの救いが必要なのか？」という疑問がでてきます。
今日の聖書箇所が示すのは、私たちが「罪」とその結果から救われる必要があるということです。
ここでローマ1章に基づいて、罪の定義を確認したいと思います。
罪とは、「創造主である神を拒み、すり替え、反逆すること」です。
裁判所の検察官のように、ローマ1章18〜32節は証拠を並べ、人類に対して神様が下す罪状を提示しています。
この箇所で、神様は人類に対する三つの罪状を示しています。順に見ていきたいと思います。
罪状①：人類は創造主を拒んでいる（18〜20, 25a）
18節からご覧ください。
というのは、不義によって真理を阻んでいる人々のあらゆる不敬虔と不義に対して、神の怒りが天から啓示されているからです。
神について知りうることは、彼らの間で明らかです。神が彼らに明らかにされたのです。神の、目に見えない性質、すなわち神の永遠の力と神性は、世界が創造されたときから被造物を通して知られ、はっきりと認められるので、彼らに弁解の余地はありません。
これは驚くべき主張です。パウロは、神様についての基本的な知識はすべての人に普遍的に与えられていると言っています。人間はだれでも、この目に見える世界を見れば、「目には見えない神が存在する」と結論づけることができる、ということです。
問題は、18節にある通り、人間がその「真理を阻んでいる」ということです。つまり、人間は罪によって、神様を知らないふりをすることを選び取っているということです。 自然界に見える神の証拠を無視して、自分の良心にある神の意識を押し殺してしまうということです。
実際、私たちの住む日本では、99%の人が聖書の神様を礼拝せず、イエス様を信じていません。しかし聖書は、救いはイエス様にしかないとはっきり教えています。使徒の働き4章12節には「この方以外には、だれによっても救いはありません。天の下でこの御名のほかに、私たちが救われるべき名は人間に与えられていないからです。」と書かれています。
「もしイエス様のことを一度も聞いたことがない“無垢な人”がいたら、その人はどうなるんですか？」と、よく聞かれます。
この質問には、人間と罪と救いについての誤解が隠されています。
第一に、不信仰の原因は「情報不足」ではありません。
イエス様について聞いたことがない人は、本当に心を開いて「知りたい」と願っているでしょうか？
だとすれば、その思い自体がすでに神様の働きです。
聖書には、そういう人のもとに神様が使者を遣わされた例があります。
例えば、使徒の働き10章では、コルネリウスという人物が本当の神を求めて祈っていたとき、天使が現れ、使徒ペテロが来て「あなた...を救う言葉をあなたに話してくれます」と告げました。
そしてペテロがイエスについて語り、コルネリウスは信じ、救われました。
でも大切なのは、コルネリウスがイエス様について直接聞いて信じるまでは、まだ救われていなかったということです。
救いは、イエス様への信仰を意識的に持つことによってしか与えられず、そして神様は通常、人間の使者を通してその信仰を生み出されます。
ここで「では、なぜ神様は最初から全員に直接、現れないのか？」という疑問が出てきます。
しかしローマ1章は「神はすでに全員にご自身を示しておられる」と言っています。 毎日、私たちの目に入るあらゆるものに「神の作品」という印字が押されているということです。
自然の法則は驚くほど精密で、ほんのわずかでも、それが違えば生命は存在できません。
音楽を楽しんだり、数学を使って社会を良くしたりできますが、音楽理論や数学の法則は人間が発見しなくても最初から存在していました。
日常の中でも、夕日の美しさ、子どもの笑い声、おいしい食事、家族や友人の愛…どれも神様がくださった証拠です。
けれど罪のある私たち人間はどう反応しているでしょうか？
神様がこれほどまでに証拠を見せて、この美しい世界を楽しむようにと招いてくださっているのに、それを突っぱね、腕を組んであくびをし、「そんな神なんて信じない」と拒みます。
すでに神様が送ってくれた証拠を拒む者に対して、どうして神様がもっと証拠を送ろうとするでしょうか？
だからパウロは、この世界と私たちの心にある神様の証拠について語った後で、20節で「彼らに弁解の余地はありません。」と結論づけます。
「イエス様について聞いたことのない無垢な人はどうなるのか？」と私たちが疑問に思うとき、そこには「無垢な人」という存在がいるという前提があります。
しかしローマ人への手紙1章は、神様の御前に無罪な人は一人もいないと言っています。
神様が誰かを裁かれる唯一の理由は、赦されていない罪があるからです。
すべての人は罪を犯していて、その罪が赦される唯一の方法はキリストへの信仰です。
なので、イエス様を信じない人はみな裁かれます。しかしその理由は単に「イエス様を信じなかったから」ではなく、「赦されていない罪があるから」です。
創造主である神様は、あなたに何も負う義務はありませんが、あなたは神様にすべてを負っています。神様があなたを造られたゆえに、神様こそがあなたの人生のルールを定めるお方です。
創造主なる神様との関わり方が、あなたの人生全体の軌道を決定します。
そしてローマ1章は、私たちが悪い軌道に乗っていると語ります。人類の最も深い問題は、創造主を拒むことから始まります。
人間は創造主を拒む, しかし人間は創造主を拒みながらも、本来神様によって満たされるべき心の空白を何かで埋めようとします。
神様の人間に対する罪状② 人類は創造主を置き換えてしまう。
ローマ1章は、すべての人が心の奥底では神様がおられることを知っていることを前提としています。
だからこそ、21節で描かれる堕落した人類の神様への応答は、なおさら言い訳できないものとなります。
21節: 彼らは神を知っていながら、神を神としてあがめず、感謝もせず、かえってその思いはむなしくなり、その鈍い心は暗くなったのです。
堕落した人間が唯一真の神を礼拝することを拒むとき、21節にある通り、「その思いはむなしく」なります。
クリスチャン作家G.K.チェスタートンはこう言いました。
「人が神を信じないことを選ぶとき、その人は無を信じるのではない。その後、あらゆる他のものを信じ得ることになる。」
そして22–23節で、神様を拒んだ人が何を信じるようになるのかが具体的に描かれています。
22 彼らは、自分たちは知者であると主張しながら愚かになり、朽ちない神の栄光を、朽ちる人間や、鳥、獣、這うものに似たかたちと替えてしまいました。
聖書の最初の章と照らし合わせて読むと、この二節はさらに悲劇的に響きます。
創世記1章27節は人類の想像についてこう述べます。
27 神は人をご自身のかたちとして創造された。神のかたちとして人を創造し、男と女に彼らを創造された。
神様は男の人と女の人を、ご自分のかたちに似せて造られました。詩篇8篇5節は、神様が人間を作られた時、「人を御使いよりわずかに欠けがあるものとし これに栄光と誉れの冠をかぶらせてくださいました。」と語ります。
人間は神様の創造の中で最も大切で特別な存在です。宇宙で最も驚くべき自然の驚異は、遠い銀河へ旅をしたり、壮大な山の頂に登ったり、神秘的な海の深みに潜ったりすることで見つかるのではなく、鏡の中に映る自分を見るだけでわかるのです。
だからこそ創世記1章には、神様が人類に地上の鳥や獣、這うものすべてに対して支配する権威を与えられたと書かれています。
26 神は仰せられた。「さあ、人をわれわれのかたちとして、われわれの似姿に造ろう。こうして彼らが、海の魚、空の鳥、家畜、地のすべてのもの、地の上を這うすべてのものを支配するようにしよう。」
しかしローマ1章は、私たちが罪の中で神様の創造の秩序を完全にひっくり返してしまったと言います。
神のかたちに造られた私たちが、本来支配するようにと与えられた被造物の像を拝んでしまっているのです。
25節には、人は「神の真理を偽りと取り替え、造り主の代わりに、造られた物を拝み、それに仕えました。」と書かれています。
創造主ではなく被造物を礼拝することを、聖書は「偶像礼拝」と呼び、そして偶像礼拝こそが罪の本質です。
偶像礼拝は、神殿にある偶像の像を拝むことだけではありません。偶像礼拝とは、本来神様だけが与えられるその満たしを、金銭、性、食べ物、家族、地位などの作られたものに求めることです。
そして、今朝あなたが無神論であれ、クリスチャンであれ、無関心であれ、ぜひ考えてほしいことがあります。それは直感に反するようでありながら、あなたの人生を説明する大きな力を持つものです。
多くの不幸せは、あなたが神様を何よりも愛していないということから来ています。
デイヴィッド・フォスター・ウォレスは、アメリカの歴史の中で最も偉大な作家の一人でした。
彼は不可知論者であり、クリスチャンではありませんでしたが、彼は「人間が偶像を拝む傾向」について書きました。
彼はこう言いました。「大人として毎日を生きる中で、「何も礼拝しない」ということはありえません。人は誰でも何かを礼拝しています。違いがあるのは「何を礼拝するか」だけです。そして神や霊的なものを礼拝するのが良い理由のひとつは、他のどんなものを礼拝しても、結局それに人生を食い尽くされてしまうからです。お金や物を礼拝すれば、どれだけ持っても決して満足できません。
自分の体や美しさ、性的な魅力を礼拝すれば、常に自分が醜く感じるようになります。権力を礼拝すれば、いつも弱さや不安にさいなまれます。知性や「賢く見られること」を礼拝すれば、いつか自分は愚かだと感じるようになります。」
もし神様を拒み、別のもので神様を置き換えてしまうのであれば、きっと尽きることなく失望してしまうでしょう。
しかし良い知らせなのは、もし神様をあなたの究極の宝とするならば、神様はあなたを尽きることなく満たしてくださいます。そして驚きなのは、神様が作られた被造物を、前よりも楽しめるようになります。なぜなら、それらに対してかつてのように「完全な満たし」をもはや期待しなくなるからです。
18節に「神の怒りが天から啓示されている」とありまが、これまで、パウロはその理由を説明してきました。
そして最後の箇所24〜32節では、神の怒りが人類に対して現れるとき、それがどのようなものになるのかが描かれています。
人が神様を拒み、神様を別のもので置き換えるとき、神様はその人を罪とその結果に引き渡されます。
罪状③：人類は創造主に反逆する
ローマ1章のこの箇所では、3回も「神は、彼らを...引き渡された」と書いています。
24節：そこで神は、彼らをその心の欲望のままに汚れに引き渡されました。
26節：こういうわけで、神は彼らを恥ずべき情欲に引き渡されました。
28節：...神は彼らを無価値な思いに引き渡されました。それで彼らは、してはならないことを行っているのです。
神様は完全に公正で、決して気まぐれではありません。だから毎回、理由が示されています。
23節 「朽ちない神の栄光を、（朽ちる人間や、鳥、獣、這うものに似た）かたちと替えてしま」ったから
25節「彼らは神の真理を偽りと取り替え、造り主の代わりに、造られた物を拝み、これに仕え」たから。
28節「彼らは神を知ることに価値を認めなかった」から。
私たちは皆、罪の中で神様に向かって「あなたとは関わりたくありません」と言ってきました。すると神様は恵みの手綱を解き、「わかった、では好きにしなさい。私抜きの人生を歩みなさい」と言われます。
私たちは皆、水から飛び出そうとする魚のようなものです。それでも神様は辛抱強く何度も水に戻してくださいます。
しかし、やがて神様は私たちが繰り返し選ぶ道を尊重し、その罪の自然な結果に私たちを引き渡されます。
これこそが、ローマ1:18が言う「神の御怒り」が今すでに人類に現されている姿です。
これこそが、私たちがどれほど技術的に進歩しても、戦争や不正義、苦しみが続いている理由です。
ある詩人は「世界の歴史は、神による世界への裁きである。」と言いました。
そしてローマ1:18で語られる怒りは、ほんの前触れにすぎません。ローマ2:5が言う「神の正しいさばきが現れる御怒りの日」が来るからです。その日には、ローマ2:9が語るように「悪を行うすべての者の上に苦難と苦悩が下り」ます。
私たちはまだローマ1章で最も議論を呼ぶ箇所には触れていません。それが26〜27節です。ここでは、人間が神様を拒んだときに追い求めるようになる罪の一部が描かれています。
この教会では、聖書は誤りなき神の御言葉であると信じています。しかし同時に、ここが「質問してよい」「疑問を抱いてよい」安全な場所であることも大切にしたいと思っています。
その心構えをもって、次の箇所を一緒に考えたいと思います。
26節：こういうわけで、神は彼らを恥ずべき情欲に引き渡されました。すなわち、彼らのうちの女たちは自然な関係を自然に反するものに替え、同じように男たちも、女との自然な関係を捨てて、男同士で情欲に燃えました。男が男と恥ずべきことを行い、その誤りに対する当然の報いをその身に受けています。
この箇所は、神様が同性愛を認めていないことを示しています。
しかし、ここに対してよく出される反論が3つあります。
１つ目の反論として、人々は「この箇所は、古代ギリシャ・ローマ世界でよく見られた虐待的な同性愛の関係について語っているだけだ」と言います。
しかし、この箇所は男性と女性、両方の同性愛を描写し、非難しています。男性間の虐待的な同性愛の関係については多くの歴史的証拠が残っていますが、女性間でそのような関係が一般的だったことを示す証拠は一つもありません。
なので聖書は確かに虐待的な同性愛行為を非難していますが、それにとどまらず、あらゆる種類の同性愛の関係を非難しています。
２つ目の反論として、人々は「パウロや聖書の著者たちは本当の意味で同性愛を理解していなかった。もし理解していたら、認めていたはずだ」と言います。
しかし、同性愛は古代ギリシャ・ローマ世界において現代よりも広く行われ、受け入れられていたという豊富な証拠があります。
最初の15人のローマ皇帝のうち14人が同性愛者でした。
また、女性を劣った存在と考えていたギリシャ人は「男性同士の同性愛こそ最高の愛だ」とさえ信じていました。
３つ目の反論として、特にクリスチャンの中には「これは意見が分かれても良い問題だ」と言う人もいます。
しかし聖書はそうは見ていません。
コリント人への手紙 第一 6:9,10:あなたがたは知らないのですか。正しくない者は神の国を相続できません。思い違いをしてはいけません。淫らな行いをする者、偶像を拝む者、姦淫をする者、男娼となる者、男色をする者、盗む者、貪欲な者、酒におぼれる者、そしる者、奪い取る者はみな、神の国を相続することができません。
もし誰かが「自分はクリスチャンだけど、不倫してもいいし、お店で万引きしてもいいし、毎週末酔いつぶれてもいいと思う」と言ったとしたらどうでしょうか。そして、あなたがこの御言葉を示して警告しても、「これは意見が分かれてもいい問題だから」と言い返すならば、それがどれほどおかしいことかは明らかです。
これらの反論に答えた上で、同性愛について私たちがどう考えるべきか、いくつかの原則を提示したいと思います。
同性愛は複雑なトピックであることを認識する必要がある。
人が同性愛に惹かれる理由には、遺伝や体のしくみといった生物学的な要素、これまでの人生経験、そして心や霊的な傷など、さまざまな要因があります。
聖書が罪としているのは、同性愛の傾向そのものではなく、同性愛的な生き方を追い求めることです。同性愛への誘惑を感じながらも、それに従わないことを選ぶクリスチャンを、聖書は罪に定めてはいません。
私たちは同性愛のライフスタイルにある人々を、他の性的な罪の中にある人々と同じように愛するべき。
多くのLGBTの人たちがキリスト教を拒むのは、そのライフスタイルに関する聖書の教えを受け入れられないからかもしれません。
しかし正直に言えば、同じくらい多くの人々がキリスト教を拒んでいるのは、彼らがクリスチャンからひどく扱われ、嘲笑されたからかもしれません。
私たちは皆、ローマ1章で非難されているすべての罪から悔い改める必要がある。
パウロは同性愛を人類の罪の一例として挙げていますが、そこで止まりません。
29-31節では20の罪をリストアップしていて、誰一人として無罪ではないと示しています。
29彼らは、あらゆる不義、悪、貪欲、悪意に満ち、ねたみ、殺意、争い、欺き、悪巧みにまみれています。また彼らは陰口を言い、30人を中傷し、神を憎み、人を侮り、高ぶり、大言壮語し、悪事を企み、親に逆らい、31浅はかで、不誠実で、情け知らずで、無慈悲です。32彼らは、そのような行いをする者たちが死に値するという神の定めを知りながら、自らそれを行っているだけでなく、それを行う者たちに同意もしているのです。
私のクリスチャンの友人で、同性愛の誘惑と戦っている人がいます。彼女はローマ1章を読んだとき、自分自身がそこに描かれていることを悟り、その時初めてキリスト教の信仰を、本当に理解したと言いました。
もし皆さんも自分自身をローマ1章の中に見ることができるならば、それはあなたもまたキリスト教を理解している証拠です。
もしあなたが自分のうちにこれらの罪を認め、神様にあわれみを求めるなら、神様はあなたを赦し、永遠のいのちを与え、聖霊様によってその罪に打ち勝つ力を与えてくださいます。
裁判では、罪を犯したことを認める人の方が、無実を偽って主張する人よりも多くのあわれみを受けるものです。
しかし神様は人間の裁判官よりもはるかに恵み深いお方です。
神様があなたに対して告げられる罪のリストを聞いて、「私は有罪です」と告白するとき、神様はあなたを「無罪だ」と宣言してくださいます。
なぜでしょうか？
ローマ1:16-17:「私は福音を恥としません。福音は、ユダヤ人をはじめギリシア人にも、信じるすべての人に救いをもたらす神の力です。
福音には神の義が啓示されていて、信仰に始まり信仰に進ませるからです。「義人は信仰によって生きる」と書いてあるとおりです。」
最後のフレーズ「義人は信仰によって生きる」は、別の言い方をすれば「信仰によって義とされる人は生きる」と訳すこともできます。
つまり、罪人のために十字架につけられたイエス・キリストを信じる人は誰でも、神様の目には完全に義と認められる、ということです。
イエス様は無実であったにもかかわらず、十字架の上で「有罪」と宣言されました。それは、有罪であった私たちが、イエス様を信じるなら「無罪」と宣言されるためでした。
A Christian club at a university in the United Kingdom once tried an unusual outreach strategy. To spark conversations about Christianity, they printed out our passage for this morning, Romans 1:18-32, in a modern format without any verse numbers or introduction.
After handing it out to fellow students, they were summoned by the university administration. The administrators said the document was offensive and the club would be censored. They demanded to know which student had written it, totally unaware it was just a passage from the Bible.
A missionary in Guangzhou, China, once read Romans chapter 1 with a non-Christian man.The man insisted there was no way Romans was written by the Apostle Paul 2,000 years ago and was convinced it must have been authored by a missionary living in China today.
Even though it's 2000 years old, the book of Romans has the timeless ability to offend everyone, in every culture.
I once read a tweet that said, “Reading Romans is like getting punched in the face…only Jesus is the one punching you, and the punch dislodges a tumor from your soul.”
Romans 1:18-32 is an offensive passage, because it tells you the bad news: you’re a sinner who deserves God’s judgement.
But the goal of telling you the bad news is to help you believe in the good news. Because the good news about Jesus only makes sense when you understand the bad news about sin.
Romans 1:16 says: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”
And that, my friends, is the good news of the gospel: anyone who believes in Jesus Christ receives salvation as a free gift of God’s grace.
But that begs the question: saved from what? From what do we need salvation?
According to our text this morning, we need to be saved from sin and its consequences.
Here’s the definition of sin we’ll be working with this morning from Romans 1.
Sin is rejecting, replacing, or rebelling against God, our Creator.
Like a prosecuting attorney in a courtroom, Romans 1:18-32 lays out the evidence and presents the charges God brings against humanity.
In Romans 1, we see three indictments God makes against humanity; let’s examine each one.
Charge #1: Humanity rejects the Creator (18-20, 25a)
Take a look starting in v18.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
This is an astounding claim. Paul argues that basic knowledge of God is universally accessible.Every member of the human race can look at the visible world and conclude that an invisible God exists.
The problem is, as v18 says, mankind “suppresses the truth” about God in unrighteousness. That is, all humans sinfully choose to live in deliberate ignorance of God. Man ignores the plain evidence of God he sees in the natural world and suppresses the innate awareness of God in his conscience.
In Japan, right where we live, 99% of people do not worship God of the Bible or believe in Jesus. The Bible says Jesus is the only way to salvation. Acts 4:12 says “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
And so we come to the classic question: “what happens to the innocent person who never hears about Jesus?”
Several misunderstandings about humanity, sin, and salvation are hidden in this question.
For one thing, unbelief isn’t mainly about a lack of information.
Is the person who’s never heard of Jesus actually open to hearing about him?
If they are, that desire itself is God’s work.
And we see in the Bible examples of God sending messengers to such people, like in Acts 10.
In Acts 10, a man named Cornelius was seeking the One True God and in a vision, an angel tells him that Peter the Apostle will visit him to “declare to you a message by which you will be saved.”
So then Peter tells him about Jesus, he believes, and is saved.
But it’s important to see that Cornelius was not saved until a human messenger told him about Jesus and he believed.
No one is saved apart from consciously putting their faith in Jesus, and God’s ordinary way of bringing that about is by sending a human messenger.
At this point, people often object and say “but why doesn’t God just reveal himself to everyone?”
But Romans 1 says, God has revealed himself to everyone. Every day, every thing that fallen, sinful man sees is stamped “made by God.”
We see the finely tuned laws of nature so precise that if they were even the slightest bit different, biological life, let alone anything at all, could not exist.
We enjoy a piece of music or use mathematics to improve society, knowing that music theory and the laws of mathematics would exist even if human beings had never discovered them.
Or more everyday, we see a beautiful sunset, hear the laughter of children, enjoy a delicious meal, or experience the love of a parent, child, spouse, or friend.
And how do sinful men and women respond?
They yawn, cross their arms and definitely refuse to believe in the God who is constantly appealing to them through the beautiful world he created for their enjoyment.
Why would God send more proof to people who reject the proof he’s already sent them?
This is why Paul, after talking about all of the evidence of God in the world and in our hearts, concludes in v20 “So they are without excuse.”
You see when we ask “what happens to the innocent person who never hears about Jesus?”, we assume that there is such a thing as an “innocent person.”
But Romans 1 says no one is innocent before God.
The only reason God condemns anyone is because of unforgiven sin.
Everyone has sinned, and faith in Christ is the only way to be forgiven of sin.
And so everyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus will be condemned, but not primarily because they didn’t believe in Jesus, but because of their unforgiven sin.
As your Creator, God owes you nothing and you owe him everything. And because God made you he sets the rules for your life.
How you relate to God your Creator sets the trajectory for the rest of your life.
And Romans 1 says we’re on a bad trajectory. All of humanity’s deepest problems begin with our rejection of our Creator.
And although humanity rejects the Creator, we still have to fill the void in our hearts made to be filled by God.
Charge #2 in God's case against humanity, humanity replaces the Creator.
Romans 1 takes it for granted that all people know deep down that there’s a God.
And because we all have this innate knowledge of God, that makes fallen humanity’s response to God in v21 all the more inexcusable.
v21: For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Because fallen man refuses to worship the One True God, he has become, as v21 says, “futile in [his] thinking.”
Or as Christian writer GK Chesterton put it: “When people choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.”
And we see in v22-23 exactly what people become capable of believing in when they reject God.
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Considered in light of the first chapter of the Bible, these two verses become even more tragic.
Genesis 1:27 describes the creation of humanity.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God made humanity, male and female, in his own image. Psalm 8:5 (NIV) says that when God made human beings he “made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”
Humanity is the crowning work of God’s creation. The most amazing natural wonder in the universe is not found by travelling to a far off galaxy, climbing to the top of a majestic mountain, or diving into the mysterious depths of the sea, but by simply looking in the mirror.
And that’s why Genesis 1 also says God gave humanity dominion over all birds and animals and creeping things on the earth.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
But Romans 1 says in our sin we totally flip God’s created order on its head.
We who are made in the image of God worship images of the creatures God has given us dominion over.
Down in v25 it says mankind “exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”
Worshipping created things rather than the Creator is what the Bible calls idolatry, and idolatry is the essence of sin.
Idolatry isn’t just worshipping statues at a temple. Idolatry is looking to created things, like money, sex, food, family, or status, for the satisfaction only God can give.
Now regardless of what you believe this morning – atheist, Christian, or indifferent – I want you to consider something that is counterintuitive but has a lot of explanatory power for your life.
Most of your unhappiness comes from the fact that you don’t love God more than anything else.
David Foster Wallace was one of the greatest writers in American history.
He was an agnostic and not a Christian, but listen to what he wrote about the human propensity for idol worship.
He said: In the day to day trenches of adult life, there is no such thing as…not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And an outstanding reason for choosing some sort of god or spiritual thing to worship…is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.
If you worship money and things… then you will never have enough. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly…Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid… Worship your intellect, being seen as smart, and you will end up feeling stupid…
If you reject God and replace him with anything else, you’ll be endlessly disappointed.
But the good news is that if you make God your ultimate treasure, he’ll endlessly satisfy you.And, to your surprise, you’ll start to find that you actually enjoy the things God created even more, because you no longer expect them to completely fulfill you.
v18 said “for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven” and up and until now Paul has been explaining the reasons why.
And now we’ll see in the last section, v24-32, what it looks like for the wrath of God to be revealed against humanity.
When you reject and replace God, he hands you over to your sin and its consequences.
Charge #3: humanity rebels against the Creator
Three different times in this section of Romans 1, it says “God gave them up.”
v24: Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.
v26: For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions.
v28: God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
God is completely fair and never arbitrary, so each time a reason is offered.
God gave them up because v23 they “exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images.”
God gave them up because v25 “they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”
God gave them because v28 “they did not see fit to acknowledge God.”
All of us, in our sin, have said to God “I want nothing to do with you.” And so God releases the restraints of his grace and says “fine, you can have your sin. You can have life without me.”
All of us are like fish that keep jumping out of the water. And God patiently keeps throwing us back into the water over and over again.
But there comes a certain point where God sees the path you continually choose, and he honors your choice by giving you over to the natural consequences of your sin.
This is the wrath of God that Romans 1:18 says is being revealed against mankind right now.
This is why in spite of all of our technological progress, war, injustice, and human suffering continue.
As one poet remarked “the history of the world is God’s judgment of the world.”
And this wrath that Romans 1:18 says is being revealed against mankind is just a small foretaste of what Romans 2:5 says is “the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed." On that day, Romans 2:9 tells us “there will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil.”
Believe it or not, we haven’t even talked about the most controversial part of Romans 1 yet, which are in v26-27. These verses begin to describe the kinds of sins God allows humanity to pursue when they reject him.
At this church, we believe the Bible is God’s Word without error. But we also want to make sure this is an environment where people feel safe to ask questions and work through doubts.
So with that in mind, let’s think through this next passage together.
v26: 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
This passage shows us that God does not approve of homosexuality.
There are three common objections to these verses.
First objection, people say these verses are just talking about abusive homosexual relationships, which were common in the Ancient-Greco Roman world.
But this passage describes and condemns both male and female homosexuality. And while we have a lot of written historical evidence of abusive male homosexual relationships, we don’t have a single piece of evidence from the ancient world that shows that abusive homosexual relationships were common between women.
So while the Bible certainly condemns abusive homosexual behavior, it also condemns homosexual relationships of any kind.
Second objection, people say that Paul and the Biblical authors didn’t really understand homosexuality and if they did, they would have been ok with it.
But we have abundant evidence that homosexuality was more widespread and perhaps even more accepted in the Ancient Greco-Roman world than today.
14/15 of the first Roman emperors were homosexual.
The Greeks, who believed women were inferior, said male homosexuality is the highest form of love.
Third objection, people, specifically Christians, say “this is an agree to disagree issue.”
But that’s not how the Bible sees it.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”
Imagine someone says to you that as a Christian they think it's ok to cheat on their spouse, shoplift from stores, and get blackout drunk every weekend.
Having dealt with these objections, I want to give us a couple principles for how we should think about homosexuality.
We should recognize that homosexuality is a complex issue.
There are a whole host of reasons why a person may be attracted to persons of their same sex including biology, life experience, and spiritual brokenness.
What the Bible condemns is the pursuit of a homosexual lifestyle, not a Christian who experiences same-sex attraction and chooses to not act on it.
We must love those in a homosexual lifestyle just as we love anyone living in sexual sin.
A lot of LGBT people reject Christianity because they don’t agree with what it says about their lifestyle.
But if we’re honest, maybe just as many reject it simply because they were mistreated and mocked by Christians.
We all need to repent of all the sins condemned in Romans 1.
Paul singles out homosexuality as just one example of humanity’s sin, but he doesn’t stop there.
In v29-31 his list of 20 sins leaves no one uncondemned.
29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
I have a Christian friend who struggles with same-sex attraction. She said she finally understood the Christian faith when she read Romans 1 and saw herself in it, all throughout the whole chapter.
And my friends, if you see yourself in Romans 1, it's evidence that you understand Christianity as well.
If you recognize these sins in yourself and cry out to God for mercy, he will forgive you, give you eternal life, and empower you through the Holy Spirit to overcome them.
In a court of law those who plead guilty to a crime are generally shown more mercy than those who falsely insist on their innocence.
But God is much more gracious than human judges.
When you hear God’s list of charges against you, and plead “guilty” God declares you “innocent.”
Why?
Romans 1:16-17, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
That phrase at the end there “the righteous shall live by faith” can also be translated as “the one who by faith is righteous shall live.”
What that means is anyone who has faith in Jesus Christ, who was crucified for sinners, is declared to be perfectly righteous in God’s sight.
Jesus, though innocent, was declared “guilty” on the cross so that we who are guilty are declared “innocent” if we trust in Jesus.
