2年半ほど前に妻のアリッサと初めて日本に来たとき、私たちは東京に住んでいました。当時、長女が生まれる予定まであと2か月でした。 日本に着いてすぐ、赤ちゃんのためのアパートを探すために休みなく動き回りました。感謝なことに、2週間以内に部屋が見つかり、引っ越すことができました。
しかし問題がありました。日本に来たばかりで良い物件の探し方も分からず、時間に追われながら決めたので、入居した部屋は正直あまり良いものではありませんでした。
それから時を経て、ちょうど6か月前、私たちはこの教会を始めるために福岡に引っ越してきました。東京よりも家の広さに対して費用が抑えられること、そしてアパート探しのコツも少し分かってきたこともあって、本当に気に入った家を見つけることができました。
新しい家に住めば住むほど、色々なことに気づき始めました。
まず前の家がどれだけひどいものだったかが分かってきました。1週間に一回はゴキブリが出て、断熱が悪いので電気代は高く、床下の水漏れで床はどんどん壊れていきました。
一方で、新しい家の良さにもどんどん気づかされています。「わぁ！お風呂に乾燥機があって服が乾かせる！」といった具合に。
前の家では虫や床の不具合に悩まされていたけれど、それが「普通のこと」だと思って受け入れていました。
今では、新しい家で、真新しい世界に目を開かされたかのようです。 白黒だった世界が色づいたように感じます。
振り返ると「なんであんな生活をしていたんだろう」と思います。
今朝の説教のテーマである「聖霊」を考えるとき、この「古い家」と「新しい家」の違いは、聖書が語る「人がクリスチャンになって聖霊を受けるときに起こること」によく似ています。
なぜなら、今朝のローマ人への手紙8章によれば、この世には本当の意味で2種類の人しかいないからです。
聖霊を持っている人と、持っていない人です。
ローマ8:1-17では、神の御霊を持つ人と持たない人の間にある根本的な違いが示されています。
今朝、御霊を持ったクリスチャンである皆さんには、キリストにあって皆さんに与えられているすべての恵みを思い出して、励まされることを願っています。 あなたは「新しい家」に住んでいますが、その家のすべての特徴に気づいているでしょうか？
クリスチャンでない方々も、今日のメッセージがよりはっきりした理解につながることを願っています。あなたは「古い家」に住んでいますが、何を損しているか気づいているでしょうか？
御霊に満たされた人の5つの特徴を見ていきましょう。
特徴 1：御霊に満たされた人はもはや罪に定められることはない（1-4a）
時代背景の文脈で考えると、ローマ人への手紙は紀元57年、イエス様の十字架刑から22年後に、イエス様の弟子であるパウロによって書かれました。パウロは、自分が宣べ伝えていた基本的なキリスト教のメッセージを説明するためにこの手紙を書きました。
そして、この最初の4節の中に、キリスト教の核心であるメッセージ・福音の素晴らしい要約を見ることができます。
パウロは1節から次のように書いています：こういうわけで、今や、キリスト・イエスにある者が罪に定められることは決してありません。なぜなら、キリスト・イエスにあるいのちの御霊の律法が、罪と死の律法からあなたを解放したからです。
ローマ書の前半で、パウロは罪の恐るべき力について語っています。罪とは、思い、言葉、行動において神の律法を破ることです。
ローマ6章23節にはこうあります。「罪の報酬は死です。」つまり、私たちが罪のために神から受ける当然の罰は、地獄での永遠の死です。
そして7章では、パウロは罪について詳しく説明したあと、ついに絶望の叫びをあげます。「私は本当にみじめな人間です。だれがこの死のからだから、私を救い出してくれるのでしょうか。」
そして、ローマ8章で、その答えが示されます。
それは、イエス様です！
では、イエス様はどのようにして私たちを救い出してくださるのでしょうか？その答えが3節に書かれています。
3 肉によって弱くなったため、律法にできなくなったことを、神はしてくださいました。神はご自分の御子を、罪深い肉と同じような形で、罪のきよめのために遣わし、肉において罪を処罰されたのです。4 それは、肉に従わず御霊に従って歩む私たちのうちに、律法の要求が満たされるためなのです。
聖書によると、どの世界の宗教のルールを守ったとしても、天国に行くことはできません。十戒などのキリスト教のルールを守ったとしても、天国に行くことはできません。なぜなら、私たちはあまりにも罪深く、神様の命令を一日たりとも破らずにはいられないからです。
極度の罪人には、極度の救いが必要です。 私たちの救いには、神の御子の死 以上のものは必要ありません。
「十字架の上で、大きな取り引きが行われました。イエス様は私たちのすべての罪を引き受けて、私たちにご自身のすべての義を与えてくれました。」
その結果、私たちがイエス様を信じた瞬間、神様は私たちを「罪を犯したことがない人」として扱うだけでなく、イエス様が生きたように、私たちを完璧に従順な人生を生きた人としても取り扱ってくれます。イエス様が得たすべての栄誉や報いが、私たちのものとなるのです。
クリスチャンでない人も、この救いを受けることができます。悔い改め。信じることによって。神様はあなたの罪をすべて拭い去り、永遠のいのちを与え、御霊で満たしてくださいます。
1～4節がキリストの十字架での死のことを語っているならば、4～8節はその恵みを受けている人たちであるクリスチャン・御霊に満たされた人たちのことを教えてくれています。
ここで、御霊に満たされた人たちのもう一つの特徴が見えてきます。
特徴2：御霊に満たされた人には新たな望みが与えられる（4b～6節）
では、4節を見てみましょう：
4 それは、肉に従わず御霊に従って歩む私たちのうちに、律法の要求が満たされるためなのです。5 肉に従う者は肉に属することを考えますが、御霊に従う者は御霊に属することを考えます。
人間のデフォルトの状態は、この「肉」である、罪ある性質に支配されていることです。 しかし、キリストを信じるならば、あなたの「肉」を支配していた力は十字架ですでに打ち破られています。
5節を見ると、どんなことを「考える」のか、つまり「心をどこに向けるのか」と「どんな生き方をするのか」の関係が書かれています。別の訳（NLT）では、5節はこう言っています。「罪の性質に支配されている人は罪深いことばかり考えますが、御霊に支配されている人は御霊が喜ぶことを考えます。」
もし常に罪深い願いを思い巡らせたり楽しんでいるならば、その通りに行動してしまうのも不思議ではありません。
しかし、クリスチャンも罪の願いと戦いますが、同時に御霊から来る新しい願いも持っています。
子どもの頃にコーヒーを飲もうとしたことはありますか？ Pretty awful right?とても苦かったと思います。
8歳の子どもがブラックコーヒーを飲んだときの苦さは、聖霊を持たない人が神様のことを味わう感覚に似ています。
聖霊様を持っていないなら、
聖書は退屈だ
クリスチャンは変わっている
神様の命令は重荷だ
と感じるでしょう。
しかし、聖霊様の働きは、私たちの「霊的な味覚」を変え、主を求め、主を喜ぶようにしてくださいます。
しかし、それは、いつも簡単に起こるというわけでは決してありません。
本物のクリスチャンとしての生活は、「御霊の思い」と「肉の思い」の戦いです。「罪深い欲望」と、「御霊が与えてくれる願い」との戦いです。たとえ罪に悩むことがあっても、罪はもはやあなたの喜びではありません。
そして、ただ罪に身を任せるのではなく、戦っているというその事実自体が、御霊があなたのうちに働いておられる証拠です。
もし罪と戦っているならば、あなたは神様と平和な関係のうちにあります。しかし、罪に満足しているならば、神様と戦っているのと同じです。
あなたはどちらでしょうか？
そして、もし罪と戦っているならば、次の特徴もあなたに当てはまります。
特徴3：御霊に満たされた人はイエス様に属している（9～11節）
9節から見ていきましょう。
しかし、もし神の御霊があなたがたのうちに住んでおられるなら、あなたがたは肉のうちにではなく、御霊のうちにいるのです。もし、キリストの御霊を持っていない人がいれば、その人はキリストのものではありません。
9節で「キリストの御霊を持っていない人がいれば、その人はキリストのものではありません」と書かれていますが、その逆もまた真実です。
つまり、キリストの御霊を持っている人は、確かにキリストに属しているということです。
クリスチャンの皆さん、なぜ今朝あなたは目覚めたとき、無神論者ではなかったのでしょうか？
そして、なぜ最後まで信じ続けられると、信頼できるのでしょうか？
エペソ4:30には、私たちは「贖いの日のために」、神の御霊によって「証印を押されている」と書かれています。
ここで、疑問に思うかもしれませんが、9節で、御霊は「神の御霊」と書かれていて、そのあと「キリストの御霊」とも書かれています。
聖霊様は、神の御霊なのか、それともキリストの御霊なのでしょうか？
答えは、どちらも正しいです。
こちらは、1700年の歴史を持つニカイア信条が、クリスチャンが聖霊について信じていることをまとめたものです。
わたしたちは、主であり、命を与える聖霊を信じます。聖霊は、父と子から出て、父と子とともに礼拝され、あがめられ、...。
11節を見てください。イエスを死者の中からよみがえらせた方の御霊が、あなたがたのうちに住んでおられるなら、キリストを死者の中からよみがえらせた方は、あなたがたのうちに住んでおられるご自分の御霊によって、あなたがたの死ぬべきからだも生かしてくださいます。
イエス様に従う方々、この重みを感じられるでしょうか。今この瞬間、あなたの内に宿り生きておられるその力に気づいているでしょうか？
イエス様を死者の中からよみがえらせ、やがて宇宙全体を新たにされるこの聖霊様が、あなたの人生を見て「あー、これは自分には手に負えないなあ」と思うでしょうか？
では、実際には、御霊はどうやって人を変えていくのでしょうか？
次の数節で少しだけ分かりますが、正直、あまり心地良い話ではありません。
特徴4：御霊に満たされた人は罪を死に至らせる（12～14節、7～8節）
12節を見てみましょう。
ですから、兄弟たちよ、私たちには義務があります。
肉に従って生きなければならないという、肉に対する義務ではありません。
御霊を持つ私たちは、もはや「肉に従って生きなければならない」という肉に対する負債者ではありません。
NLTという違う訳では、12節をこう表現しています。「あなたは、罪ある性質が求めることを行う義務はありません。」
クリスチャンにとって、罪はもはや避けられないものではありません。自分の罪深い習慣や態度を見て「どうしようもない、私はいつもこうだ」と言うのは間違いです。
もちろん、クリスチャンも毎日罪を犯します。
完璧になることは決してできません。
しかし、日々悔い改めて歩み、キリストに似た者へと成長していないならば、自分の霊的な状態を真剣に考える必要があります。
13節「もし肉に従って生きるなら、あなたがたは死ぬことになります。しかし、もし御霊によってからだの行いを殺すなら、あなたがたは生きます。」
これは「罪を犯さないほうがいいですよ」という勧めではありません。
悔い改めることなく罪に身を任せ続けるならば、永遠の死に至るということを事実として述べています。
罪がこれほどまでに致命的なものであるならば、なぜ私たちはそんなに罪に対して居心地よく感じてしまうのでしょうか？
ネル・セオボルドという女優がいます。彼女は1970年代に車のショーを宣伝するために、ライオンと一緒に写真を撮って有名になりました。写真の中では女優もライオンも穏やかに見えますが、数分後、そのライオンは突然襲いかかり、彼女の足に噛みついたのです。
皆は衝撃を受けました。そのライオンは長年トレーナーに飼われ、一度も問題を起こしたことがなかったからです。
でも結局のところ、それはライオンであり、体重250キロの殺戮マシーンです。どれだけ安心しているように見えても、いずれ襲ってくるときがあります。
あなたには「ペット」のように飼ってしまっている罪がありませんか？
「小さい頃から飼っていて、もう手放せないんだ。しっかりリードをつけて、ちゃんと餌を与えていれば大丈夫だろう。」
しかし、聖霊様はあなたに、罪を飼い慣らすことを望んではいません。むしろ罪を殺すことを望んでおられます。
イギリスの神学者ジョン・オーウェンはこう書きました。
「罪を殺さなければ、罪があなたを殺す。」
クリスチャンの皆さん、今日こそ罪に対して宣戦布告する日としましょう。
今週、少し時間をとって、自分の罪を振り返ってみてください。
親しい友人や配偶者、あなたをよく知る人に「私の人生に見られる特徴的な罪や誘惑を、２、３個挙げるとすると何ですか？」と聞いてみましょう。
もしハンドルを手放したら、「あなたの人生」という名のその車は自然にどの方向へ曲がっていくでしょうか？
そして計画を立てましょう：その罪について具体的に祈り、罪に陥りやすい状況を意図的に避け、罪に引き寄せられるものから距離を置きましょう。
そして、罪に対してその生死を分けた戦いに取り組むときは、神様に受け入れられるためではなく、すでに神様に受け入れられている者として戦うのだということを覚えておいてください。このことは、御霊に満たされた人の最後の特徴でさらに詳しく見ていきます。
特徴5：御霊に満たされた人は、神様に愛されている神の子どもである（14～18節）
14節をご覧ください。
神の御霊に導かれる人はみな、神の子どもです。
この節で、よくある誤解が二つクリアになります。
一つ目は、「御霊に導かれる」というと、多くの人は突然の決断や、人生の選択に対する神の知恵を受け取ることだと思いがちです。しかし、聖書がこの表現を信者について使うときの文脈は常に、罪を死に至らせ、罪の欲望に打ち勝つことについてです。
なので「御霊に導かれる」と聞いたときに思い浮かべるのは、急に「オーストラリアに引っ越すべきだ！」と思うことではなく、むしろ「あー、また同じ罪を犯してしまった、絶対にやめなきゃ！」というような感覚です。
二つ目は、多くの人が「聖書はすべての人を神の子どもだと言っている」と思い込んでいることです。
しかし、それは違います。14節は「神の御霊に導かれる」人が「神の子ども」だと言っています。神の子どもであることは、自動的に与えられるものでも自然にそうなるものでもなく、実際、エペソ2:3には「生まれながら御怒りを受けるべき子らでした」と書かれています。
イエス様を信じ、聖霊を受けて初めて、私たちは神の子として迎え入れられるという大きな特権を受けます。
15節でさらに詳しくみていきます。
15 あなたがたは、人を再び恐怖に陥れる、奴隷の霊を受けたのではなく、子とする御霊を受けたのです。この御霊によって、私たちは「アバ、父」と叫びます。
ここには、神様との関わり方について、冷酷な上司としての神様か、それとも愛にあふれる父としての神様か、の正反対の姿があります。
上司として神様と関わる人には、15節が言う「奴隷の霊」があります。ここには恐れが見えます。
上司との関係は、自分の成果次第です。
どこかで、失敗すれば解雇されるのではと心配します。
しかし、御霊に満たされた人は、神様との関係がまったく違います。
その人たちは「子とする御霊を受け」、「「アバ、父」と叫」び、呼びかけることができます。
良き父との関係は、私たちの成果に基づくものではありません。
私は娘たちに、「ハイジ、メアリー、今学期の成績が悪いから、残念だけどおまえたちはここから出て行きなさい」とは自分の子供に絶対に言いません。
そしてもっと大切なのは、悪い成果によって関係が終わるものではないということです。家族の車を壊しても、あなたは変わらず、父の子どもです。
ジョン・ウェスレーは、歴史上最も影響力のあるクリスチャンの一人でした。彼は旅する伝道者で、生涯で4万回以上の説教を行い、馬で40万キロ以上も移動しました。
ウェスレーは牧師の息子として生まれ、信仰深いクリスチャン家庭で育ち、長年宣教師として働き、大学で神学を教え、オックスフォード大学ではクリスチャンとしての生活を追求するクラブも設立しました。
それでも、ウェスレー自身は、これらすべての宗教活動の後で初めて、自分の本当のキリスト教信仰への回心が訪れたと感じていました。
ウェスレーは、自分の本当の回心以前を「しもべの信仰」と呼びました。つまり、正しい教義をすべて認め、道徳的な生活を送っていたものの、神様は遠く冷たい存在で、恐れるべき上司のように感じていたのです。
しかし、1738年に本当の意味で信仰が自分のものとなったとき、彼は「しもべの信仰」を捨て、それが「子どもの信仰」に変わったと言います。
その経験について、彼は日記に次のように書いています。
「夕方、いやいやながらアルダーズゲート・ストリートの集会に行きました。そこでは誰かがローマ人への手紙を読みあげていました。8時４5分ごろ、その人がキリストを信じる信仰によって神様が心の中で働かれて起こる変化について語っていました。その時、私の心が不思議と熱くなるのを感じました。私は、救いのためのキリスト、ただキリストだけを本当に信頼することができる、と心から感じました。そして神様がこんな私の罪さえも赦し、罪と死の力から救ってくださったという確信が与えられました。」
「私たちは行いによってではなく、信仰による恵みで救われる」という聖書が教えていることをウェスレーは生涯ずっと知ってはいました。
しかし、神様が自分を、成果ではなくただただ恵みによって、ウェスリーを子として愛し、受け入れてくださっていると本当の意味で信じられるまで、自分が本当にクリスチャンだとは言えませんでした。
御霊を持っているかどうかを見極める最も良い方法は、この問いにどう答えるかです。神様はあなたのお父さんですか、それとも上司ですか？
そして、あなたの霊的な健康のバロメーターもここにあります。
神様があなたを赦し、父のように愛してくださっていることを、あなたはどれくらい確かに、そして鮮やかに知っていますか？
ローマ8章16節にあるように、その確信を魂をもって味わった人は、本当に幸いです。
「御霊ご自身が、私たちの霊とともに、私たちが神の子どもであることを証ししてくださいます。」
When my wife Alyssa and I first came to Japan two and a half years ago, we lived in Tokyo. At the time, our oldest daughter was due in just two months. As soon as we landed, we worked non-stop to find an apartment for our baby. Thankfully, within two weeks, we found a place and moved in.
But there was a problem. Since we were new to Japan, didn’t know how to find a good place, and were racing against the clock…the place we moved into… wasn’t so great.
Fast forward to six months ago, when we moved to Fukuoka to start this church. Since you get more house for your money here, and we learned a few things about apartment hunting, we ended up finding a place we absolutely love.
The longer I live in our new place, the more aware I become of two things.
First, just how bad our old place was. We saw cockroaches at least once a week, the insulation was poor so our electric bill was high, and our floors kept breaking from water leaks underneath.
Second, just how good our new place is. We keep discovering new features, like: “Wow! This thing in our shower dries our clothes!”
Before, in our old house, we were bothered by the bugs and the floors breaking; but we thought it was normal, just something you had to live with.
Now, in the new house, it’s like our eyes are open to a whole new world. Our vision was black and white, now its color.
We look back and think, “What were we thinking, living like that?”
As we consider the subject of this morning’s sermon, the Holy Spirit, this difference between the old house and new house is like what the Bible says happens to a person when they become a Christian and receive the Holy Spirit.
Because according to our text for this morning, Romans 8, there are really only two types of people in the world.
People who have the Holy Spirit and people who don’t.
And in Romans 8:1-17, we see the radical difference between the two.
This morning, my hope is that those of you who have the Holy Spirit, that is, Christians, will be encouraged and reminded of all that is yours in Christ. You live in the new house, but are you aware of all its features?
Non-Christian friends, I hope today will also be clarifying for you. You live in the old house, but do you realize what you’re missing out on?
Let’s consider five traits of people filled with the Spirit.
Trait#1: Spirit-filled people are no longer condemned (1-4a)
Backing up to think about context, the book of Romans was written in 57 AD, 22 years after Jesus’ crucifixion, by a disciple of Jesus named Paul. Paul wrote to explain the basic Christian message he preached.
And here in these first four verses, we see an incredible summary of the core Christian message, the gospel.
Paul writes, starting in v1: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Earlier in the book of Romans, Paul wrote about the unbelievable power of sin.
Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death”, that is, the just penalty we deserve from God because of our sin is death, eternally, in hell.
And in Romans 7, after Paul describes sin with great detail, he finally cries out in desperation “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
And now in Romans 8, we have the answer- Jesus!
How does Jesus deliver us?
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us
You see, according to the Bible, you can’t get to heaven by following the rules of any world religion. You can’t even get to heaven by following the rules of Christianity, like the Ten Commandments. You and I are far too sinful to keep God’s commands without breaking them, even for one day.
Extreme sinners require an extreme salvation. Our salvation requires nothing less than the death of the Son of God himself.
On the cross, a Great Exchange took place where Jesus takes all your sin and gives you all his righteousness.
And the result is that at the very moment you believe in Jesus, God not only treats you as if you had never sinned or been a sinner, but also as if you had lived the perfectly obedient life Jesus lived. All of Jesus’ medals are pinned to your chest.
Non-Christian, this can be yours too. Repent. Believe. And God will wipe away your sins, give you eternal life, and fill you with his Spirit.
If v1-4 describes Christ’s death on the cross, v4-8 describes those who enjoy its benefits: Christians, people filled with the Spirit.
And here, we see a second trait of those who are filled with the Holy Spirit.
Trait#2: Spirit-filled people have new desires (4b-6).
Take a look at v4:
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
The default human state is to be dominated by the flesh, the sinful nature. But if you believe in Christ, the controlling power of your flesh was broken at the cross.
Notice in v5 the relationship between what you “set [your] mind on”, and how you live.
In a different translation (NLT), v5 says “those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”
If you constantly meditate on and delight in sinful desires, don’t be surprised when you end up acting on them.
But even though Christians wrestle with sinful desires, we also have new desires that come from the Spirit.
Did you ever try to drink coffee as a kid?
Picture how bitter a cup of black coffee tastes for an 8 year old, that’s how the things of God taste to a person without the Holy Spirit.
If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, you probably feel like:
the Bible is boring,
Christians are strange,
and God’s commands are a burden.
But the work of the Holy Spirit is to change your spiritual tastebuds so that you start to desire the things of God.
But that doesn’t mean it’s never a struggle.
The authentic Christian life is a war of Spirit vs flesh. Sinful desires vs the desires the Spirit gives you. Though you struggle with sin, sin is no longer your delight.
And the very fact that you struggle, rather than simply give in, is evidence of the Spirit’s presence in you.
If you’re at war with sin, you’re at peace with God. But if you’re at peace with your sin, you’re at war with God.
Which one are you?
And if you’re at war with sin, it's evidence that the next trait is also true of you.
Trait #3: Spirit-filled people belong to Jesus (9-11)
Follow along starting in v9.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
In v9 where it says “Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him” we can deduce that the opposite is also true. Anyone who has the Spirit of Christ does belong to him. つまり、キリストの御霊を持っている人は、確かにキリストに属しているということです。
Christian, why is it that you didn’t wake up this morning as an atheist?
And how can you trust you’ll continue to believe until the very end?
Ephesians 4:30 says, you were “sealed for the day of redemption” by the Holy Spirit of God.
Now you may be wondering, v9 says the Spirit is the “Spirit of God”, but then it says he’s the “Spirit of Christ”?
Is the Holy Spirit the Spirit of God or is he the Spirit of Christ?
Yes.
Here’s how the 1,700 year old Nicene Creed summarizes what Christians believe about the Holy Spirit.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
V11 says: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Follower of Jesus, feel the weight of this. Do you realize the Power that lives inside of you right now?
Do you really think the Holy Spirit, who raised Jesus from the dead, and will one day renew the universe- looks at your life and says, “yeah that’s too much for me to change?”
But how does the Spirit change people practically speaking?
In the next few verses, we get a glimpse, and it's not pretty.
Trait #4: Spirit-filled people put sin to death (12-14, 7-8)
Look at v12. 12節を見てみましょう。
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors,
not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
We who have the Spirit are no longer “debtors” who must “live according to the flesh.”
A different translation (NLT) of v12 says “you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.”
Sin is no longer inevitable for the Christian. A Christian should never look at a sinful habit or attitude in their life and say “it can’t be helped, I’ll always be like that.”
Christians sin every day.
We will never be perfect.
But if you’re not also walking in repentance daily and progressively growing in Christlikeness, you should be very concerned about your spiritual state.
v13 says “for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
This isn’t a recommendation, like “it would be better if you didn’t sin.”
No its a statement of fact, that if you unrepentantly pursue sin and fully give yourself over to it, you will die eternally.
If sin is this deadly, why are we so comfortable with it?
Nell Theobald was an actress who is famous for this picture she took with a lion to promote a car show in the 1970s. Both the actress and the lion are calm in this picture, but just moments later the lion would snap and bite her leg.
Everyone was shocked. The trainer had taken care of this lion for years and never once had a problem.
But at the end of the day, it's a lion— its a 250 kg killing machine! No matter how comfortable you are with it, it's only a matter of time until it attacks.
Do you have a pet sin this morning?
“I can’t get rid of it, I’ve had it since it was a little baby. And as long as I keep it on a tight leash and feed it, I’ll be fine.”
But the Holy Spirit doesn’t want you to tame your sin, he wants you to kill it.
As British theologian John Owen wrote, “be killing sin or it will be killing you.”
So Christian, let today be the day where you declare war on sin.
Maybe take some time this week to take inventory.
Talk to your closest friends, your spouse, anyone who knows you well, and ask: “What are two or three sin struggles or temptations that seem characteristic of my life?”
If you let go of the wheel, so to speak, which direction does the car of your life naturally start to swerve?
Then make a plan: pray specifically about that sin, be intentionally on guard against it, and avoid whatever tends to draw you into it.
And as you engage in the life and death war against sin, remember you fight not as one who has to work for God’s acceptance, but as one who works from God’s acceptance, as we’ll see in the final trait of Spirit filled people.
Trait#5: Spirit-filled people are beloved children of God (14-18)
Look at v14.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
This verse clears up two common misconceptions.
First, being “led by the Spirit” is often thought of as spontaneous decision making or receiving wisdom from God for life choices.
But both times the Bible uses this phrase to describe believers, the context is about being led to put sin to death and resist sinful desires.So when you think of being “led by the Spirit”, think less of suddenly getting the sense you should move to Australia, and more like “I can’t believe I did that same sin again, I’ve got to stop!”
Second, many people think the Bible teaches that all people are children of God.
But that’s not true. Notice it says that it’s those who are “led by the Spirit of God” that “are sons of God.”Being a son or daughter of God isn’t an automatic or natural thing, in fact Ephesians 2:3 says all people are “by nature children of wrath.”
It’s only when you believe in Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit, that you also receive the immense privilege of adoption as God’s child.
We read more about that in v15.
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Here we see two radically different ways to relate to God: as a cruel Boss, or as a loving Father.
People who relate to God as their boss have what v15 says is “the spirit of slavery”, which is marked by fear.
You relate to a boss based on your performance. And at some level you’re aware that if you fail to perform you’ll be fired.
But people filled with the Spirit relate to God totally differently.
They have “received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
A relationship to a good father is not based on your performance at all.
I would never say to my daughters, “Heidi, Mary, look I’m sorry but your numbers weren’t good this quarter, we have to let you go.”
And, more importantly, your relationship can’t be ended by bad performance. Even if you wreck the family car, you’re still a son.
John Wesley, one of the most influential Christians in history, was a traveling preacher who delivered more than 40,000 sermons and rode over 400,000 kilometers on horseback during his lifetime.
Wesley was the son of a pastor, grew up in a devoutly religious home, worked for many years as a missionary, taught theology at a university, and even founded a club at Oxford University dedicated to pursuing a devout Christian life.
And yet Wesley believed his real conversion to the Christian faith came much later, after all of these religious activities.
Wesley said up until his true conversion he had the “faith of a servant”, that is he affirmed all of the right doctrines and lived a moral life but God was a distant and cold figure he was afraid of- his boss.
But upon his conversion in 1738, he said he traded the “faith of a servant” for “the faith of a son.”
He wrote in his journal about this experience.
“In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading [from] the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.”
All his life, Wesley had heard what the Bible teaches: we’re saved by grace through faith, not by good works.
But it wasn’t until he truly believed that God loves him and accepts him as a son, not based on his performance but by sheer grace, that he says he actually became a Christian.
Because the best way to tell if you have the Spirit is how you answer this question.
Is God your Father, or is he your boss?
And the best gauge of your spiritual health is your answer to this. How clear and vivid is your assurance and certainty of God’s forgiveness and Fatherly love?
Blessed are those whose souls have experienced what Romans 8:16 describes:
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
