疑いと向き合う Dealing With Doubt｜ヨハネの福音書6章 John 6

もし私が無人島に取り残されたとして、聖書の中からたった一章だけ持っていけるとしたら、ヨハネの福音書6章を選びます。もしヨハネ6章がなかったら、私は今もクリスチャンでいられたかどうか分かりません。日本に来ることも、この教会を始めることもなかったと思います。私の人生にこれほど大きな影響を与えた章は他にはありません。

私だけではなく、ジョンバニヤンも、この章を読んで救われました。彼は、歴史上最も多く読まれてきたキリスト教書の一つである天路歴程を書いた人です。彼はヨハネの6章を愛するあまり、丸ごとこの章についてイエス・キリストのみもとへという一冊の本を書きました。それから一世紀を経て、この本は近代の宣教運動に火をつけました。

その運動を通して、韓国、インド、そしてサハラ砂漠から南のアフリカ地域で、何百万人の人がクリスチャンになりました。ヨハネ6章を通して、聖書に次いで有名なキリスト教書が生まれ、何百万もの新しい信者が起こされ、そしてこの教会も生まれたのです。なぜこの箇所はそれほど大きな影響を与えてきたのでしょうか。それは、この箇所が「イエスのもとに来るなら、どんなに疑い深い人でも、どんなに罪深い人でも、イエスは迎え入れてくださる」と良い知らせを語っているからです。

今日のメインポイントです。

疑いも、罪も、その他どんなものも、あなたがイエスのもとに来ることを妨げさせてはいけません。

カウンセラーの人たちは、ネガティブな感情と向き合うためには、その感情に名前をつけることが大切だと言います。同じように、疑いと向き合うためには、私たちが経験する疑いの種類をはっきりさせる必要があります。

今日はヨハネ6章に出てくる二つの疑いを見ていきましょう。

そして何よりも大切なのは、その解決策を見ていくことです。

疑いのタイプ①：イエスの愛を疑うこと（37–40節）

これは「キリスト教は本当なのか？」という疑いではなく、「私は本当にクリスチャンなのだろうか？」という種類の疑いです。「私は本当に救われているのだろうか？」

これは多くの人が思っている以上に抱えている問題です。しかも、自分がそれで苦しんでいると気づいていない人も多いのです。では、そのように感じるとき、どうすればよいのでしょうか。

イエス様の二つの約束を思い出してください。

１つ目の約束は、救いを求めてイエス様のもとに来る人を、イエス様は決して拒まれない（37節）。

イエス様はこのように語ります。

37 父がわたしに与えてくださる者はみな、わたしのもとに来ます。そして、わたしのもとに来る者を、わたしは決して外に追い出したりはしません。

こんなふうに考えたことはないでしょうか。「もしこんな自分がイエスのもとに行ったら、拒まれるんじゃないか…？」あるいは、「イエスはもう、私の問題にうんざりしているんじゃないか…」と感じていないでしょうか？イエス様は、私たちの不安な心を本当によくご存じです。「決して〜しない」という言葉は、ギリシャ語では二重否定になっています。３７節を直訳すると、こうなります。「わたしのもとに来る者を、わたしは決して、決して、絶対に追い出さない。」

ジョンバニヤンは、自身の本の中で、ヨハネ6章37節について次のように黙想しています。

「でも私は大きな罪人です」とあなたは言う。

「それでも、わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない」とキリストは言われる。

「でも私は長年罪を犯してきました」とあなたは言う。

「それでも、わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない」とキリストは言われる。

「でも私は心のかたくなな罪人です」とあなたは言う。

「それでも、わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない」とキリストは言われる。

「でも私は一生サタンに仕えてきました」とあなたは言う。

「それでも、わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない」とキリストは言われる。

「でも私は何も良いものを持っていません」とあなたは言う。

「それでも、わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない」とキリストは言われる。

どんな反論を挙げても、この無敵の言葉を打ち負かすことはできない。

「わたしは決してあなたを追い出さない。」

例えばの話ですが、私が、「がんのように見えるほくろがある」とあなたに見せたとします。私たちは二人とも、「何かがおかしい」と同意します。あなたは「病院に行きなさい。」と言うでしょう。

でも私がこう言ったらどうでしょう。「まず全部理解してからに行こうかな。」「自分で治せるかもしれない。」「先生、迷惑がるかもしれないし…」

あなたはきっとこう言うはずです。「そんなのばかげているよ。とにかく行きなよ。医者は助けるのが仕事なんだから。全部理解する必要も、自分で直す必要もないし。そんなことをしたら、かえって悪くなる。必要なのは、“何かおかしい”と認めて、“助けが必要だ”と認めることだけだよ。」

皆さん、どんなものにも、あなた自身がイエス様のもとに来ることを妨げさせないでください。イエスは偉大な医者だからです。学校を卒業してから、子どもができてから、退職してから、と後回しにしないでください。次の人生の危機が来るまで、後回しにしないでください。「ちゃんとした教会の人」という型に自分がはまるまで、待たなくていいのです。

昔の賛美歌にはこんな言葉があります。

「罪人よ、貧しく、助けを必要としている者よ、堕落によって迷い、滅びた者よ、来なさい。自分がもっと良くなってからと思っているなら、あなたは決して来ることができない。」

２つ目の約束は、救いを求めてイエス様のもとに来る人を、イエス様は決して失われない（38–40節）ということです。

38 わたしが天から下って来たのは、自分の思いを行うためではなく、わたしを遣わされた方のみこころを行うためです。 39 わたしを遣わされた方のみこころは、わたしに与えてくださったすべての者を、わたしが一人も失うことなく、終わりの日によみがえらせることです。40 わたしの父のみこころは、子を見て信じる者がみな永遠のいのちを持ち、わたしがその人を終わりの日によみがえらせることなのです。」

イエス様は、ご自分がなぜ天から来られたのかを語られます。

永遠の昔に、父なる神はある人々を選び、御子イエスにお与えになりました。そして今から二千年前、イエス様はその人々を確かに救うために、天から来られました。そして今、イエス様が救われる者の中で、永遠に失われる者は一人もいないということです。

ここで​​40節に焦点を当ててみましょう。

わたしの父のみこころは、子を見て信じる者がみな永遠のいのちを持ち、わたしがその人を終わりの日によみがえらせることなのです。

永遠のいのちを受けることと、終わりの日によみがえることは、別の出来事です。イエス様を信じる人は、今すでに永遠のいのちを持っています。そして将来、最後のさばきの日にも確かに救われます。

言い換えれば、イエス様は救った人を、最後まで救い続けてくださるのです。本当にイエスを信じる者は、永遠に失われることはないのです。

神学者の R. C. スプロールはこう言いました。

「神があなたの名前をいのちの書に書かれるとき、消しゴムを手元に置いてはおられない。」

私は自分が飛行機を怖がっているという事実を受け入れるようになりました。何年か前、アリッサとひどい乱気流のフライトに乗ったことがあります。揺れる飛行機ほど、私が必死に祈るものはありません。

しかも周りを見ると、誰も怖がっていないように見えるんです。私は「1万メートル落ちたらどうしよう」と覚悟しているのに、アリッサはクッキーを食べながらテレビを見て笑っているんです。

皆さんに質問です。

• 私の恐怖の感情は、飛行機がシカゴに到着するかどうかに影響したでしょうか？アリッサと私は全く違う感情を持っていたけれど、最終的には同じ場所に向かっていました。

• 私の恐れは、飛行機の安全性を変えたでしょうか？致命的な事故の確率は100万分の1とも言われています。そして私の不安が、その確率を変えることはありません。

• そして何より、航空の安全に疑いを持ちながらも、私は飛行機に乗ったということです。

キリストにあるあなたも同じです。あなたの揺れ動く感情は、イエス様の約束を弱めることはないのです。あなたが「信仰を握り続けられるだろうか」と不安に思う時も、イエス様があなたを握っているという事実は変わらないのです。疑いがあっても、それがイエス様の救う力を制限することはないのです。

まだクリスチャンでない方々は、自分に正直に問いかけてみてください。今あなたが希望を置いているものは、イエス様の約束ほどに揺るがないものでしょうか。

クリスチャンの方々、イエス様の愛に対する確信を、あなたはどれほどはっきり持っているでしょうか？イエス様が決してあなたを捨て去らないという確信、永遠のいのちを与え、終わりの日によみがえらせてくださるという確信、どれほどのものでしょうか？

それがはっきり分かるまで、立ち止まらないでください。

ここまで私たちは、「私は本当にクリスチャンなのか？」という問いを見てきました。

しかしここからは、もっと多くの人が抱く問いである「キリスト教は本当に真実なのか？」ということを考えていきます。

疑いのタイプ②：イエスの真実性を疑うこと（41–59節）

ここで難しい質問です。どうして同じ愛あるクリスチャン家庭で育っても、一人は信じ、もう一人は拒むのでしょうか。なぜ、イエス様を拒む人がいるのでしょうか。

一つの理由は、理解が浅いことです（41–42節）。

ヨハネ6章の前半で、イエス様は五つのパンと二匹の魚で五千人の人を養われました。群衆はガリラヤ湖を渡ってイエス様を追いかけ、王様にしようとします。イエス様がパンを群集に与えたことで、彼らは天からのパンをイスラエルに与えたモーセを思い出しました。そこで彼らはイエス様に「モーセのように、パンを与え続けてください。」と言います。

しかし、代わりにイエス様は、イエス自身が神のパンであり、天から下って来て、世にいのちを与えるものであると語られます。群集はイエス様の答えたことが気に入りませんでした。

41ユダヤ人たちは、イエスが「わたしは天から下って来たパンです」と言われたので、イエスについて小声で文句を言い始めた。 42彼らは言った。「あれは、ヨセフの子イエスではないか。私たちは父親と母親を知っている。どうして今、『わたしは天から下って来た』と言ったりするのか。」...52 それで、ユダヤ人たちは、「この人は、どうやって自分の肉を、私たちに与えて食べさせることができるのか」と互いに激しい議論を始めた。

五千人の群衆の中にいた人たちが、ただイエス様の話を聞くために追いかけてきます。まるでこう言いたくなるような状況です。「イエス様、今がチャンスです。みんなあなたを王にしたがっています。一言一言に聞き入っています。このチャンスを逃さないでください！」

では、イエス様は次に何を語られたのでしょうか。

54 わたしの肉を食べ、わたしの血を飲む者は、永遠のいのちを持っています。

ある聖書学者はこう書いています。

「イエスの言葉が人々を苛立たせ、つまずかせるとき、イエスは相手に分かりやすいようにメッセージを調整することはしない。むしろ、さらに問題を深めるように語られる。」

これは“教会の成長戦略”としてはあまり効果的には見えません。ここで何が起こっているのでしょうか。イエス様は、群衆を散らしてでも、真の教会を建てようとされるのです。

旧ソビエト連邦では、クリスチャンに対する激しい迫害がありました。彼らは命がけで礼拝に集まっていたのです。

あるとき、牧師の説教の最中に、武装した兵士たちが銃を持って押し入ってきました。兵士たちは言いました。「本当のクリスチャンでない者は、今すぐ出て行け。」何人かが出て行きました。

その人たちがいなくなると、兵士たちはマスクを外してこう言いました。「よし。偽善者がいなくなった。これで安心して礼拝できる。」

神の御言葉が宣べ伝えられるとき、それは、ただ見ているだけの人と、献身した弟子とを分けます。このように言われています。：同じ太陽でも、ろうを溶かし、粘土を固くする。同じ福音でも、ある人を悔い改めへと溶かし、、別の人を罪の中でさらに固くする。

では、日本に福音を届ける私たちの戦略は何でしょうか。二千年間語り続けられている、中東のイエスという人物が、救いへの唯一の道であるとただ語ることです。なぜなら、聞く耳のある人は、必ず聞いてくれるからです。

イエス様を拒むもう一つの理由は、勘違いした期待 のせいです（47–51節）。

群衆が求めたのは、無限にパンを配ってくれる王でした。

しかしイエス様は、人間の条件に合わせて理解されたり、受け入れられたりすることを拒まれるお方です。

自動車を普及させたヘンリー・フォードはこう言いました。

「もし人々に何が欲しいかと聞いていたら、“もっと速い馬”と答えただろう。」

私たちは自分に何が本当に必要なのか分かっていませんがイエス様はご存じなのです。

47まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。信じる者は永遠のいのちを持っています。48 わたしはいのちのパンです。49 あなたがたの先祖たちは荒野でマナを食べたが、死にました。50しかし、これは天から下って来たパンで、それを食べると死ぬことがありません。

しかし群衆が求めていたのは、永遠のいのちではありませんでした。彼らが欲しかったのは、「今」を快適に生きることでした。そして、私たちも同じです。

だからこそ、「繁栄の神学」というものがこれほど人気なのです。繁栄の神学は、「神のみこころは、すべての信者が健康で裕福になることだ」と間違った主張をします。繁栄の神学の教師たちはこう言います。：「人々は罪や救いには関心はない。...そのうち神を愛するようになるには、まずは、彼らが欲しがっているものを与えなければならない。」

しかし、人を“何で”惹きつけるかによって、その人を“何へ”導くかが変わります。

クリスチャン・ラッパーの シャイ・リンはこう言いました。

「もしお金のためにイエスのもとに来るなら、あなたの神はイエスではなく、お金だ。」

イエス様の愛を疑う時には、イエス様の約束を思い出すことが大切です。イエス様の真実を疑う時には、誤解や間違った期待を明らかにすることが大切です。

しかし、私たちはどうやって、イエス様の約束の内容を知るのでしょうか。どうやって、自分が誤解しているかどうかを知るのでしょうか。

最後のポイントで、それを考えましょう。

どうやって疑いと向き合うのか？（60–71節）

59 これが、イエスがカペナウムで教えられたとき、会堂で話されたことである。 60 これを聞いて、弟子たちのうちの多くの者が言った。「これはひどい話だ。だれが聞いていられるだろうか。」

今までの反発は、すべて外側の人々、信じていない人たちからのものでした。しかし今度は、イエスの弟子たちの中から反発が起こります。イエス様に対する人々の否定的な反応を見て、彼らは気まずさを感じたのか、「もう無理だ。」と言ったのです。

66 こういうわけで、弟子たちのうちの多くの者が離れ去り、もはやイエスとともに歩もうとはしなくなった。

誰かが信仰を捨ててしまうとき、それは本当にがっかりするものです。以前仕えていた教会でのことですが、キャンパス・ミニストリーに従事していた人で、堅実そうなメンバーがいました。

私たちは、彼女が教会のリーダーになる事について話し合っていました。しかし、ショックなことに、その場で、彼女は、罪の道を選ぶこと、そして、もう自分をクリスチャンだとは思っていないことを語りました。

では、人がイエス様から離れていくとき、私たちはどうすればよいのでしょうか？

まずは、イエス様は驚いてはいないということを覚えておくことです（64節）。

イエス様は、ご自分の教えにつまずいた人たちに対して、こう言われました。

64けれども、あなたがたの中に信じない者たちがいます。」信じない者たちがだれか、...イエスは初めから知っておられたのである。

ちょっと待ってください。イエス様は「救いは失われない」と言われたのでは？その通りですが、同時にイエス様は、弟子だと名乗りながら離れていった人たちについて、「彼らは信じていなかった」とも言われました。

ヨハネの手紙第一2章19節でも、キリストを捨てた人たちについてこう語っています。

「彼らは私たちの中から出て行きましたが、もともと私たちの仲間ではなかったのです。もし仲間であったなら、私たちのもとに、とどまっていたでしょう。しかし、出て行ったのは、彼らがみな私たちの仲間でなかったことが明らかにされるためだったのです。」

最後まで歩み続けることが、本物のクリスチャンのしるしです。大切なのは、どう始めたかではありません。どう歩み続けるかです。

第二に、人が信じてくれない時もあるのだと受け入れることです（63節後半、65節、44節）。

人が信仰を捨てるとき、私たちは理由を探そうとします。「きっと教えが悪かったんだ。」「親が十分に気にかけなかったんだ。」「誰かに傷つけられたに違いない。」

もちろん、そういう要因もありますが、イエス様は、そのことでご自分を責めたりはしません。

65わたしを遣わされた父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできません。とイエス様は言われます。

また44節でも「ですから、わたしはあなたがたに、『父が与えてくださらないかぎり、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできない』と言ったのです。「引き寄せる」と訳されている言葉は、ギリシャ語で ἕλκω（ヘルコー）という言葉で、「力をもって引く」という意味を持ちます。使徒の働き16章9節では、パウロが当局によって無理やり法廷に引き出される場面で使われています。

父が［引き寄せてくれない］かぎり、だれも［イエス］のもとに来ることはできない

最終的に、人が信じるかどうかは、神様の御手の中にあります。

第三に、いのちの御言葉にすがることです（63節、68節）。

• 41〜58節では、信じていない人たちがイエス様につまずき、拒みました。

• 59〜66節では、弟子だと名乗っていた人たちが、同じように不満を言い、遂には離れていきます。

それをご覧になって、イエス様は63節でこう言われます。

63いのちを与えるのは御霊です。肉は何の益ももたらしません。わたしがあなたがたに話してきたことばは、霊であり、またいのちです。

しかし悲しいことに、彼らはイエス様の言葉よりも、文化の声に耳を傾けました。

自分の信念や選択を、聖書よりも感情や経験や文化に基づいて決めていないか、注意してみてください。私たちは「自分自身で考えている」と思っていますが、実際には、文化が語ることを繰り返しているだけかもしれません。文化は、私たちを形づくってしまうものだからです。だからこそ、イエス様に私たちを“再び形づくって”いただく必要があるのです。

• クリスチャンとの交わりが少ない。聖書に触れることが少ない。神を恐れる心があまりない 。

• それに加えて――孤立することが多い。デジタル情報の大量摂取。人の目を恐れる心が強い。

• そういう状態は、信仰から離れてしまうリスクが高いのです。

想像してみて欲しいのですが、寒い冬の夜、みんなでキャンプファイヤーを囲んでいるとします。火の近くにいる人たちは、暖かくて楽しい時間を過ごしています。

• でも、火から遠く離れた周辺を歩いている人たちは文句を言います。「もうキャンプファイヤーなんて嫌だ。寒すぎる。」

• 火の近くにいる人たちは言います。「もっと火の近くに来なよ。あなたは本当の温かさを知らないんだよ。」

キリストを“周辺”から眺めるような心構えに気をつけてください。燃え盛る中心には、キリストの十字架、神の栄光、そして教会の交わりがあります。しかし、周辺にとどまってしまう人もいます。

• その人たちがキリスト教において一番ワクワクするのは、実は一番重要ではないことだからです。

• 地獄から救われることは望むけれど、罪から救われることは望まないからです。

• イエス様が与えたいと願っているいのちを味わわず、自分が思い描いた“理想の人生”をないと不満を抱くからです。

もしこれがあなたに当てはまるとしても――それでも皆さんのことが大好きです。

イエス様が用意してくれる温かさを、ぜひ味わって欲しいと思います。

そして最後に、悲しいけれど、向き合わなければならない、避けられない現実があります。イエス様とともに歩む時間が長くなればなるほど、イエス様から離れていく人を見ることも増えていきます。

66 こういうわけで、弟子たちのうちの多くの者が離れ去り、もはやイエスとともに歩もうとはしなくなった。67 それで、イエスは十二人に、「あなたがたも離れて行きたいのですか」と言われた

尊敬していたリーダーが、大切な友人が、あるいは、家族でさえも信仰から離れていくその瞬間――イエス様は、あなたに問いかけます。

「あなたがたも離れて行きたいのですか」

最後まで耐え忍ぶ信仰を持って、疑いを乗り越えたペテロはこのように告白しています。

「主よ、私たちはだれのところに行けるでしょうか。あなたは、永遠のいのちのことばを持っておられます。私たちは、あなたが神の聖者であると信じ、また知っています。」

If I were stranded on a desert island and could have only one chapter of the Bible, it would be John 6. If it weren’t for John 6, I might not still be a Christian.I certainly wouldn’t have come to Japan or started this church. No other chapter has impacted me more…and I’m not alone.

• John Bunyan was saved by reading this chapter. He later wrote Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the best-selling books of all time.

• He loved John 6 so much he wrote an entire book on it, Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ. 

• A century later, Bunyan’s book helped spark the Modern Missions Movement.

• That movement resulted in millions of people becoming Christians in Korea, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Because of John 6, we have the most famous Christian book after the Bible, millions of new believers, and this church.

Why has this passage been so impactful? Because it tells us the good news that Jesus welcomes even the most skeptical and sinful who come to him.

Which brings us to today’s main point. 

[MPS] Don’t let doubt, sin, or anything else keep you from coming to Jesus.

Counselors say to deal with negative emotions, you have to name them. In the same way, if we’re gonna deal with doubt, we have to name the different kinds of doubt we experience. 

Let’s look at two types of doubt in John 6. Then, more importantly, let’s look at the solution.

Type #1: Doubting Jesus Love (v37-40)

This kind of doubt is not “is Christianity true?”, but… “am I really a Christian?” Like “am I really saved? This problem is more widespread than many realize. Many struggle without even knowing this is their problem.

What do you do when you feel this way?

Remember two promises of Jesus.

First promise, Jesus won’t reject anyone who comes to him for salvation (v37).

Jesus says: 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 

Have you ever thought… “Maybe Jesus will reject me if I come to him?” Or maybe you just have a low-grade sense that Jesus is tired of dealing with your problems.

Jesus knows our anxious hearts so well. 

“Never” here is a double negative in the original Greek. You could translate Jesus' words in v37 like this. 

“The one coming to me, I will most certainly, never, ever cast out”

Bunyan has a great meditation on John 6:37 in his book.

“But I am a great sinner, you say.  

‘But I will never cast you out,’ says Christ.  

But I am an old sinner, you say.  

‘But I will never cast you out,’ says Christ.  

But I am a hard-hearted sinner, you say.  

‘But I will never cast you out,’ says Christ.  

But I have served Satan all my days, you say.  

‘But I will never cast you out,’ says Christ.  

But I have nothing good to bring with me, you say.  

‘But I will never cast you out,’ says Christ.”

...Raise your objections, none can threaten these invincible words: 

“But I will never cast you out.”

Imagine… I show you a mole that looks cancerous. 

We both agree: something’s wrong. You say, “Go to the doctor.”

But I say…

• “Maybe I should fully understand it first.” 

• “Maybe I should try to fix it myself.”

• “Maybe the doctor will be annoyed I came for help.”

You’d say…

• “That’s ridiculous. Just go. The doctor would love to help. You don’t need to understand or fix it. That will only make it worse. All you need to know is something’s wrong and you need help.”

Friends, don’t let anything keep you from coming to Jesus, the Great Physician.

• Don’t wait until you finish school, have kids, or retire.

• Don’t wait until your next life crisis.

• Don’t wait until you fit the mold of a good church person.

In the words of the old hymn... 

Come ye sinners, poor and needy, lost and ruined by the fall. If you wait until you’re better, you will never come at all.

Second promise, Jesus won’t lose anyone who comes to him for salvation (v38-40).

38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 

Jesus tells us why he came down from heaven. 

• In eternity past, God the Father chose certain people and gave them to Jesus.

• Then 2,000 years ago, Jesus came down from heaven to save them specifically.

• And now, not a single person Jesus saves will be lost eternally. 

Let’s zoom in on v40.

Everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life… and I will raise him up on the last day.

Getting eternal life and being raised up on the last day are two different events. Every person who believes in Jesus has eternal life now and… they’ll also be saved at the final judgment. In other words, when Jesus saves someone, he keeps them saved. No true believer in Jesus will ever be lost.

RC Sproul says: “When God writes your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life, he doesn’t do it with an eraser handy.”

I’ve come to accept that I’m afraid of flying. Years ago, Alyssa and I were on a brutally turbulent flight. Nothing helps my prayer life like a bumpy plane ride. What makes it worse is I look around and no one else seems afraid.

I’m preparing to fall 10,000 meters to my death. Alyssa’s just eating cookies and laughing at her TV show.

Let me ask you…

• Did my feelings affect whether the plane would reach Chicago? Alyssa and I had different feelings about the plane ride… but ultimately we were going to the same place.

• Did my fear affect the safety of the flight? The odds of a fatal crash are literally one in a million, and my fear couldn’t change that.

• Most importantly, even with doubts about aviation safety, I still got on the plane. 

The same is true if you’re in Christ.

• Your shifting feelings don’t weaken Jesus’ promises.

• Your fear of losing your grip doesn’t change the fact that Jesus holds you. 

• And even if you have doubts, they don’t limit Jesus' power to save.

Non-Christians… be honest with yourself. Is anything you’re putting your hope in right now as unshakable as what Jesus promises? 

Christians…how clear and vivid is your assurance of Jesus’ love? How certain are you Jesus will never cast you out… that he gave you eternal life and will raise you up on the last day? Don’t rest until you know for sure. 

We addressed the question “am I really a Christian?” But now, we’re gonna consider a much more common question, “is Christianity really true?”

Doubt Type #2: Doubting Jesus’ truthfulness (v41-59).

Here’s a hard question. How can two people grow up in the same loving Christian family… but one believes and another rejects?

Why do some people reject Jesus?

Some have shallow understanding (v41-42).

In the first half of John 6, Jesus fed 5,000 with five loaves and two fish. The crowds chase him across the Sea of Galilee, wanting to make him king. When Jesus gave the crowd bread, it reminded them of Moses, who gave Israel bread from heaven.

So they ask Jesus to be like Moses and keep giving them bread. Instead, Jesus says he’s the true bread from heaven… the bread of God… who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They didn’t like Jesus’ answer. 

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”…52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

People from the crowd of 5000 are chasing Jesus down just to hear him speak.

• “Alright Jesus…they want you to be king. They’re hanging on your every word. Don’t miss your chance!”

So what does Jesus say next?

 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.

One Bible scholar wrote this.

“When Jesus’ statements provoke and vex, he does not accommodate his message to his audience’s ability to understand or accept it, but instead exacerbates the problem.”

This doesn’t seem like an effective church growth strategy. What’s going on here?! Jesus is willing to scatter a crowd to build the church.

In the former Soviet Union there was fierce, deadly persecution of Christians. Gathering for worship was a major risk.

A pastor was preaching when armed soldiers burst in with guns. They said, “anyone who is not really a Christian may leave now.” Several people left. 

When they were gone, the soldiers took off their masks and said, “Good. Now that the hypocrites are gone, we can worship safely.”

When the word of God is preached, it separates casual onlookers from committed disciples. As it's been said: The same sun which melts wax hardens clay. And the same Gospel which melts some to repentance hardens others in their sin.

So what’s our strategy to reach Japan with the gospel?

Explaining a 2,000 year old-book about a middle eastern guy named Jesus who’s the only path to salvation.

Because the people with ears to hear… will hear.

Others reject Jesus because of mistaken expectations (v47-51).

All the crowd wanted was a king who hands out unlimited bread. 

But Jesus is unwilling to be understood or accepted on man’s terms. 

Henry Ford, who popularized the automobile said this.

“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

We don’t know what we need…but praise God, Jesus does.

47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.

But the crowds didn’t want eternal life forever, they wanted a comfortable life now. And we’re the same way.

This is why the prosperity gospel is so popular. The prosperity gospel falsely claims God’s will is for all believers to be healthy and wealthy. Prosperity teachers say: “People don't care about sin and salvation….eventually they’ll love God but first you have to give them what they want.”

But what you win people with is what you win them to. 

Or in the words of Christian rapper Shai Linne…

“If you come to Jesus for money, he’s not your God, money is.”

We answer doubts about Jesus’ love by remembering his promises. We uncover doubts about Jesus’ truth by exposing misunderstanding and false hopes. 

But how do we know what Jesus promises? How do we know if we’ve misunderstood him?

Let’s consider that in our final point. 

How do we deal with doubt? (v60-71).

59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”

So far, all the objections have come from the unbelieving world. But now, the objections are coming from Jesus' disciples. Seeing the response of unbelievers to Jesus, they were probably embarrassed, and said “I’m done.”

66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

It’s deeply discouraging when people renounce the faith.

At a previous church, a member serving with a campus ministry seemed very solid. We met to discuss her becoming a church leader. But at that meeting, to my shock, she said she’d chosen to pursue a life of sin and no longer considered herself a Christian.

So what do you do when people walk away from Jesus?

First, know Jesus isn’t surprised (v64).

Jesus says this to those who objected to his teaching.

64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe.)

Now hold on…didn’t Jesus say you can’t lose your salvation? Yes, but Jesus also says those who professed to be his disciples, yet walked away… “did not believe.”

1 John 2:19 says this about those who renounce Christ.

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.”

Perseverance is the mark of a genuine Christian. It's not about how you start. It's how you keep going.

Second, accept that sometimes people just don’t believe (v63b, 65, 44).

When someone renounces the faith, people try to figure out why. “Surely it was bad teaching. Their parents didn’t care enough. Someone hurt them.”

But Jesus doesn’t beat himself up about it.

 65 And [Jesus] said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

Similarly in v44, 44a No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. 

The word translated as draw is ἕλκω (helkō), which means to “lead by force.”

It’s used in Acts 16:9 when Paul is violently dragged into court by the authorities. 

No one can come to [Jesus] unless the Father [drags] him.

In the final analysis, whether or not someone believes is in God’s hands. 

Third, cling to the words of life (v63, 68)

• In v41-58, the unbelieving world objects to and rejects Jesus.

• In v59-66, professing Christians echo those same objections and eventually reject him too.

Jesus, seeing this, says in v63…

63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

But sadly, they listened more to their culture’s objections than Jesus' words. 

Beware of basing your beliefs and choices more on feelings, experience, and culture than on what the Bible says. We think we’re having our own thoughts, but we’re just repeating what the culture says.

Culture is forming us. We need to let Jesus counter-form us. 

• A person with…low Christian fellowship, low Bible intake, low fear of God…

• …PLUS…high isolation, high digital inputs, high fear of man.…

• is at high-risk of falling away.

Imagine we’re at a camp fire on a cold winter night.

The people closest to the fire are having a great time.

The people walking around the periphery, far from the fire, complain. They say to the people at the center “I’m so done with campfires, it's so cold.”

The center people say “come closer to the fire, you’re missing out.”

Beware of having a marginal mentality with Christianity.

At the blazing center are the cross of Christ, the glory of God, and the fellowship of the church. But some live on the fringes. 

• The things that excite them most about Christianity are the things that matter the least.

• They want Jesus to save them from hell, but they don’t want Jesus to save them from sin.

• They’re missing out on the life Jesus wants for them, but disappointed with the life they think Jesus is giving them. 

Friends, if that’s you, we love you! 

Come enjoy the warmth Jesus has for you.

As we close… we must face something sad, but true.

The longer you walk with Jesus, the more people you will see walk away from Jesus.

66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”

When others fall away… respected leaders, dear friends, or even close family…

Jesus will confront you with the same question…

“Do you want to go away as well?”

Faith that endures, that overcomes doubt, answers with Peter…

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
