「私がもうスポーツ観戦に行かなくなった7つの理由」をご紹介します。行くたびにお金を求められた。
同じ列に座っている人たちがあまりフレンドリーじゃなかった。
審判の判断に納得できなかった。
延長戦になって、帰りが遅くなった。
試合が、唯一ゆっくり寝たり用事を済ませたりできる日に予定されていた。
子どもの頃、親に連れられてスポーツ観戦に行きすぎた。
自分の子どもには、どのスポーツが好きか自由に選ばせてあげたい。
どこかで聞いたことあるような話ではありませんか？もちろん、これは皮肉です。
これは、「教会で礼拝しない理由」として人がよく口にする言い訳と、とても似ています。でも、私たちは自分が本当に喜びを感じているものを優先するものです。
私は個人的にはスポーツは好きではありません。でも、もし皆さんがスポーツ好きなら、先ほどあげたこれらの理由のどれ一つとして、試合に行くのをやめる理由にはならないと思います。誰かに説得されなくても、自然と行くと思います。
今日見ていくのは、ヨハネの福音書4章1〜42節です。
ここには、深い罪の中に生きていた一人の女性が、イエス様との出会いによって劇的に変えられる姿が描かれています。イエス様に出会うとき、私たちの喜びは抑えきれなくなるものです。
礼拝は「義務」ではなく、「喜び」に変わります。イエス様を礼拝することを止めるものは何もなくなります。そして、「一緒に礼拝しよう」と人を招くことも、誰かに言われなくても自然とそうしたくなるのです。
今日のメインポイントです。
イエス様との出会いで、私たちの礼拝は真の周りに広がっていくものへと変えられていく。
それでは、イエス様との出会いが私たちをどのように変えるのか、三つのポイントから考えていきましょう。
①イエス様との出会いは、私たちの「何を礼拝するか」を変える（1〜18節）。
評判が高まるにつれ、ユダヤ人の宗教指導者たちからは、イエス様は好ましくない注目を集めるようになりました。このままでは、彼らによって働きが妨げられる危険がありました。
そこでイエス様は、南のユダを離れ、北のガリラヤへと向かわれます
その途中、「サマリア」という、悪名高い地域をどうしても通らなければなりませんでした。
4 しかし、サマリアを通って行かなければならなかった。5 それでイエスは、ヤコブがその子ヨセフに与えた地所に近い、スカルというサマリアの町に来られた。6 ...イエスは旅の疲れから、その井戸の傍らに、ただ座っておられた。時はおよそ第六の時であった。7 一人のサマリアの女が、水を汲みに来た。イエスは彼女に、「わたしに水を飲ませてください」と言われた。...9そのサマリアの女は言った。「あなたはユダヤ人なのに、どうしてサマリアの女の私に、飲み水をお求めになるのですか。」ユダヤ人はサマリア人と付き合いをしなかったのである。
この場面を正しく理解するためには、当時の文化的背景を知る必要があります。
サマリア人とユダヤ人は、互いに強い嫌悪感を抱いていました。
民族的には、サマリア人はユダヤ人と異邦人の混血でした。
そして宗教的にも、ユダヤ的要素と、そうでない要素が混ざっていました。
彼らは、聖書の最初のモーセ五書だけを聖書として受け入れていました。
エルサレム神殿ではなく、ゲリジム山で礼拝をしていました。
ユダヤ人とサマリア人の対立はあまりにも激しく、ローマ帝国が両者の間に軍隊を配置して平和を保つ必要があるほどでした。
さらに、こうした民族的な敵対関係に加えて、ユダヤ人の先生であるイエスが、一人のサマリア人女性と公に話すこと自体が不適切だと考えられていました。
しかし、これから見ていくように、イエス様は常に私たちの常識を超えるお方です。
10 イエスは答えられた。「もしあなたが神の賜物を知り、また、水を飲ませてくださいとあなたに言っているのがだれなのかを知っていたら、あなたのほうからその人に求めていたでしょう。そして、その人はあなたに生ける水を与えたことでしょう。」11その女は言った。「主よ。あなたは汲む物を持っておられませんし、この井戸は深いのです。その生ける水を、どこから手に入れられるのでしょうか...13 イエスは答えられた。「この水を飲む人はみな、また渇きます。14 しかし、わたしが与える水を飲む人は、いつまでも決して渇くことがありません。わたしが与える水は、その人の内で泉となり、永遠のいのちへの水が湧き出ます。」15 彼女はイエスに言った。「主よ。私が渇くことのないように、ここに汲みに来なくてもよいように、その水を私に下さい。」
イエス様がおっしゃるのは「普通の水を飲む人はまた渇く。しかし、生ける水は、永遠に渇くことがない。」ということでした。
これはたとえでしたが、この女性はそれを文字どおりに受け取りました。
ヨハネの福音書7章37〜39節を見ると、「生ける水」とは、聖霊を指していることが分かります。
井戸が水で満たされるように、イエス様に従う者は聖霊様で満たされ、主のうちにある尽きることのない満足へと導かれます。
ある詩人は、海で立ち往生したときの皮肉を、こんな言葉で表しました。
水、水、どこを見ても水ばかり……しかし、飲める水は一滴もない。
この世の「塩水」は、決して私たちを満たすことはありません。
しかし、真の礼拝は、渇いた魂を満たす水です。
1978年、アメリカ国立衛生研究所（NIH）は、宝くじに当たった22人と、当たらなかった22人の幸福度を調査しました。
数か月後、当選者たちの幸福度は、結局ほかの人たちと同じ水準に戻っていきました。
新しい車、新しい家、新しい体験は、一時的には幸福感を高めます。でも、それは長続きはしないのです。
これが、人が買い物、ゲーム、ジャンクフード、ポルノ、アルコールに依存していく原因です。
手に入れれば入れるほど、もっと欲しくなるのです。そして欲しいと望めば望むほど、喜びは減っていくのです。
ここには科学では説明できない側面があります。
それが、罪というものです。
罪とは、ただ「宇宙のスピード違反」をすることではありません。
罪の本質は、神様以上に何かを愛してしまうことであり、聖書はそれを偶像礼拝と呼んでいます。
偶像礼拝とは、良いものを、自分にとって究極のものにしてしまうことです。
友情、娯楽、子ども、教育、旅。これらはすべて、良いものです。
しかし、その良いものを「神のような存在」にしてしまうなら、それは必ず、あなたを空っぽにします。
イエス様に従うというのは、自分の偶像を手放すことを意味します。
そして、この女性にとっての偶像は、男性たちとの関係でした。
16 イエスは彼女に言われた。「行って、あなたの夫をここに呼んで来なさい。」17 彼女は答えた。「私には夫がいません。」イエスは言われた。「自分には夫がいない、と言ったのは、そのとおりです。18 あなたには夫が五人いましたが、今一緒にいるのは夫ではないのですから。あなたは本当のことを言いました。」
この女性が置かれていた状況については、聖書学者の間でも意見が分かれます。
ある人たちは、彼女は5回結婚と離婚を繰り返し、今は6人目の男性と、結婚せずに一緒に暮らしていると考えています。
また別の人たちは、6人の男性と関係を持ち、そのうちの一人とは今も不倫関係にあると考えています。
どちらが正しいかは、分かりません。
しかし、はっきりとわかっていることは、彼女が繰り返し、十戒の７番目の14 姦淫してはならない。という命令を破ってきたということです。
ここで、イエス様は、特別な説明もなく、結婚外の性的な関係、結婚前の同棲、結婚の中での不誠実さは、いずれも深刻な罪であると前提しています。
これは、よくある「伝道のやり方」ではありません。
信仰を持っていない人に罪について語ることに居心地悪く感じる人は多いと思います。
しかし救われるためには、まず「自分は救いが必要だ」と信じる必要があります。
罪人は、律法によって心が突き刺されてはじめて、福音によって癒されるのです。
しかし、ここでのイエス様の目的は、彼女の罪を指摘して「じゃあ、やめなさい。さようなら。」と言うものではありません。
イエス様は、人が罪を犯すのは、神様以外の何かを礼拝しているからだということを知っておられました。
私たちは生まれつき、神様を求める心を持っています。でもその渇きを、違う場所で満たそうとしてしまいます。
G.K.チェスタートンは、こう書いています。「売春宿の扉を叩くすべての人は実は神を探しているのだ。」
罪の問題は、突き詰めていくと礼拝の問題なのです。
ここから、二つ目のポイントにつながっていきます。
②イエス様との出会いは、私たちの『どのように礼拝するか』を変える（19〜24節）。
19 彼女は言った。「主よ。あなたは預言者だとお見受けします。20 私たちの先祖はこの山で礼拝しましたが、あなたがたは、礼拝すべき場所はエルサレムにあると言っています。」
この女性は、イエス様の問いかけから逃れようとして、話題を変えようとしているのかもしれません。
あるいはイエス様がただ者ではないと感じて、試しているのかもしれません。
どちらにしてもイエス様は、はっきりと答えてくださいます。
21 イエスは彼女に言われた。「女の人よ、わたしを信じなさい。この山でもなく、エルサレムでもないところで、あなたがたが父を礼拝する時が来ます。22 救いはユダヤ人から出るのですから、わたしたちは知って礼拝していますが、あなたがたは知らないで礼拝しています。
イエス様は、サマリア人たちが、礼拝の「場所」についても、「対象」についても、間違っていると言われます。
サマリア人たちは、旧約聖書の66％以上を受け入れていなかったので、彼らの礼拝は不完全な啓示に基づいた礼拝だったのです。
そのため、エルサレムの神殿で礼拝せよ、という神様の指示を知らなかったのです。
しかし、イエス様の到来によって、20節でのこの女性の「礼拝はどこでするべきか」という質問は、もはや意味を失います。
「DVDとBlu-ray、どっちがいいですか？」という質問に対して
皆さんは「Netflixで見ればいいじゃない。」と答えると思います。
同じように、イエス様の到来は、『聖なる場所』という概念そのものを過去のものにしました。唯一真の神を礼拝するのに、特定の場所や、特別な建物は必要ないのです。必要なのは神様のみことばだけです。
クリスチャンには、巡礼しなければならないメッカやエルサレムのような場所はありません。イエスを通して、どこででも神様を礼拝することができるのです。
23 しかし、まことの礼拝者たちが、御霊と真理によって父を礼拝する時が来ます。今がその時です。父はそのような人たちを、ご自分を礼拝する者として求めておられるのです。24 神は霊ですから、神を礼拝する人は、御霊と真理によって礼拝しなければなりません。」
旧約聖書では、神様ご自身が「どのように礼拝されるべきか」を定めておられました。そして新約聖書で、イエス様は、その同じ権威をもって礼拝を定義されます。
神様が求めておられるのは、ただの礼拝者ではなく、「まことの礼拝者たち」であるとイエス様は語られます。
私たちは、自分の好きなやり方で礼拝するのではなく、御霊と真理によって礼拝しなければならないのです。
神様は、「礼拝されているかどうか」だけでなく、「どのように礼拝されているか」を気にかけておられるお方です。
礼拝は、聖書を通して啓示された神様への応答である必要があります。
だからこそイエス様は不完全な聖書しか持たなかったサマリア人に向かって、「あなたがたは知らないで礼拝しています」と言われたのです。
イエス様が「御霊と真理によって礼拝しなければなりません。」と言われるのは、「感情的で、かつ知的でなければならない」という意味ではありません。それも大切ですが、イエス様が言いたいのは、そこではありません。
「御霊」とは、聖霊様のことです。そして「真理」は、真の神を啓示するイエス・キリストご自身を指しています。つまり、まことの礼拝は三位一体的なものです。私たちは、御霊の力によって、御子が明らかにされた真理に従い、父なる神を礼拝します。
ここで、誤解しないで欲しいのですが、
まことの礼拝には、必ず感情が伴います。
第一 ペテロの手紙 1:8では「あなたがたはイエス・キリストを見たことはないけれども愛しており、今見てはいないけれども信じており、ことばに尽くせない、栄えに満ちた喜びに躍っています。」と書かれています。
私たちが神様のみことばのメッセージを聞く時の態度は、イエス様を「見たことはないけれども愛して」いるということを表すほどのものでしょうか？
私たちの主に捧げる賛美は、イエス様を「信じており、ことばに尽くせない、栄えに満ちた喜びに躍ってい」るということを表すほどのものでしょうか。
「私は礼拝であまり感情を表に出さないタイプなんです」と言う人もいるかもしれません。
でも、好きなスポーツチームを応援しているときや、コンサートに行ったときはどうでしょうか。その時も本当に感情を出していないでしょうか。また別の例で言うと、私があなたとコーヒーを飲んでいると想像してみてください。そこに、私の家族が入ってきます。私の顔はぱっと明るくなります。そして駆け寄って、家族を迎えます。
きっとその時「わあ、この人は本当に家族が大好きで、大切にしているんだな。」と感じると思います。家族に「大好きだ」と知っていて欲しいし、同時に、目の前にいる人にもそれを知っていてほしいのです。同じように、礼拝の中で、周りの人があなたを見て「この人はイエスを愛している」と目に見えて分かるとき、それは周囲の人たちにとっても大きな励ましになります。
「礼拝の音楽が感情に訴えるのは操作的だ」と言う人もいるかもしれません。でも、音楽はすべて感情に影響を与えるものです。短調は悲しく響き、長調は明るく響きます。問題は、感情そのものではなく、その感情が何に対して反応しているかです。
聖書的な礼拝は、聖書の真理によって感情を揺り動かしてくれるものです。
だから私たちは、教会の集まりのすべての要素が聖書の命令と直接結びつくものでありたいと願います。
毎週、私たちは集まって
聖書を読み、
みことばに基づいて祈り、
みことばを宣べ伝え、
みことばを歌い、
(バプテスマと聖餐を通して) みことばを目の当たりにします。
なぜなら、私たちはクリスチャンであっても、偶像礼拝に傾きやすいからです。私たちは皆、本当の神様よりも、自分の思い描く理想の神様像を好んでしまうものです。昨年、BBCは「ChatGPTの『危険なほどに』媚び、へつらうようにしたアップデートが撤回された」という記事を出しました。
ユーザーたちは、何を言ってもチャットボットが肯定してくることに不満を持ちました。
道を聞かれて怒鳴った人に対して「あなたは素晴らしい」と褒めたり、必要な薬をやめた人に、「あなたの旅路を誇りに思います」と言ったのです。決して訂正せず、いつも肯定する存在は、危険だと誰もが同意しました。
……でも、もしあなたが神様をそのような存在だと思っているとしたら？自分で作り上げた神が、どうしてあなたを正すことができるでしょうか。もし聖書に、神様がどのようなお方であり、何を求めておられるのか、その定義を求めていないならば、私たちが信じているのは本当の神様ではありません。それは、ChatGPTスタイルの神です。
しかし、まことの神様を正しく礼拝するとき、美しいことが起こるのです。宗教学者たちは、キリスト教は共同体的であり、仏教や神道はより個人的だと指摘します。
なぜでしょうか。これらの宗教における神との関係は、人格的というよりも、取引的なものだからです。だからその人たちの礼拝は、自販機にお金を入れるために並ぶような形になります。
しかしキリスト教は、神様との人生は、他者と分かち合うときに最も豊かになると語ります。
一人で食べる食事も悪くありませんが、愛する人たちと囲む食卓にはかないません。だから、クリスチャンの礼拝は、葬式のようではなく、喜び歌い、祝うパーティーのようであるべきなのです。
なぜなら、私たちクリスチャンは自分たちは罪人であると知っていて、本来は神のさばきを受けるべき存在だということも知っているからです。それでも神様は、イエス・キリストにあって、赦しと永遠のいのちを、無償の贈り物として与えてくださったのです。
だから私たちは、自分自身を深刻に考えすぎません。
でも、神様のことは、とても真剣に受け止めます。そして、自分が受け取ったこの恵みを、他の人たちにも受け取って欲しいと願うのです。
ある牧師は、キリスト教のメッセージをユーモアを込めて、こう要約しました。「私は完全にダメ人間だ。でも、私の未来は信じられないほど明るい。しかも、誰でもこの未来の仲間に入れる。」
これが、最後のポイントにつながります。
③イエス様との出会いは、私たちの『誰と一緒に礼拝するか』を変える（25〜42節）。
25 女はイエスに言った。「私は、キリストと呼ばれるメシアが来られることを知っています。その方が来られるとき、一切のことを私たちに知らせてくださるでしょう。」26 イエスは言われた。「あなたと話しているこのわたしがそれです。」
サマリア人たちは、聖書が歪められていたにもかかわらず、(ユダヤ人と同じように、)メシアの到来を待ち望んでいました。そしてここで初めて、イエス様はご自身がメシアであることを明かされます。
しかも、その真実を最初に知らされたのは、宗教的にも、道徳的にも、「外側」にいた一人の女性でした。
28 彼女は、自分の水がめを置いたまま町へ行き、人々に言った。29「来て、見てください。私がしたことを、すべて私に話した人がいます。もしかすると、この方がキリストなのでしょうか。」
彼女は、自分が今話している相手が、長い間待ち望まれてきたメシアであることを知り、心から喜び驚きます。
そして彼女は、水がめを置いて、町へ戻っていきました。この行動はおそらく、偽りの水源を捨てて、自分が頼ってきた偶像を手放したことを象徴していると思われます。
ここで注目したいのは、イエス様が一度も、「さあ、行って、私のことを人に伝えなさい」とは言っていないことです。
これが、新しく信仰を持った人のすごいところです。
私たちは、人々が救われることを「願うように教える」必要はないのです。
教える必要があるのは、福音をどう伝えるかであって、福音を信じてほしいと願う心ではありません。
他の人の救いを願う気持ちは、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの泣き声のようなものです。
赤ちゃんが生まれたときに泣くと、医師たちは安心します。それは、新しいいのちが確かにそこにあるしるしだからです。
チャールズ・スポルジョンはこう言いました。「他の人が救われることを願う気持ちがまったくないなら、あなた自身も救われていないと確信してよい。」
イエス様に対するまことの礼拝は、伝染するものです。
だから、人々を礼拝へと招くことは、何よりも大切なことなのです。
30節には、30 そこで、人々は町を出て、イエスのもとにやって来た。とあります。
人々がちょうどイエス様のもとに到着するそのとき、弟子たちは、昼食を持って戻ってきました。
弟子達はイエス様に、「食事をしてください」と勧めますが、イエス様は、
34節でこう言われます。34「わたしの食べ物とは、わたしを遣わされた方のみこころを行い、そのわざを成し遂げることです。35...目を上げて畑を見なさい。色づいて、刈り入れるばかりになっています。
言い換えると、これは「昼ごはんの心配はひとまず置いて、今、神が何をしておられるかを見なさい。」ということです。
戦争の時代には、国は国民に対して、戦争を支えるために特定の食べ物を我慢するよう求めるときがあります。
また軍隊では、任務中に眠ることは裏切り行為と見なされます。
同じように、イエス様は、弟子作りの使命から私たちの目をそらしてしまう「良いもの」をあえて手放すことを私たちに期待しておられるのです。
また、今まさに私たちの目の前で、神様が人々の人生の中で働いておられることに目を開いているようにと願っておられるのです。
私の牧師の友人に、運転免許を取るのにとても苦労した人がいます。
そして手続きにうんざりしていたので、隣に座っていた男性とたわいもない会話を始めました。
そしてその友人が「私はクリスチャンだ」とシェアすると、
その男性はこう答えました。
「それは不思議ですね。私はパキスタンで、クリスチャンだと疑われて国を追われたんです。実際には違うのに……。でも、クリスチャンって、そもそも何なんですか？」
私の友人が、イエス様について語ると、その男性は、後にバプテスマを受けました。
時に、最もパワフルな伝道は、何か特別なプログラムからではなく、ごく普通の日常の中から生まれます。
例えば、カフェの店員、不動産業者、近所の人を、自分のスケジュールを邪魔する「存在感のない人」として扱うこともできます。
もしくは――立ち止まり、あいさつし、神様が何をなされるのかを期待しつつ関わることもできます。
そのような心持ちで過ごす時、水を汲むという何でもない日常の行動が、救いへとつながることさえあるのです。
さて、その町の多くのサマリア人が、「あの方は、私がしたことをすべて私に話した」と証言した女のことばによって、イエスを信じた。...彼らはその女に言った。「もう私たちは、あなたが話したことによって信じているのではありません。自分で聞いて、この方が本当に世の救い主だと分かったのです。」
ただの偶然のように見えるこの出会いは決して偶然ではありませんでした。
4節にはイエス様は「サマリアを通って行かなければならなかった」とあります。イエス様は、この女性と出会うことが定められていたのです。なぜなら、神様は「ご自分を礼拝する者を...求めておられる」からです。そして、この女性は信じ、町へ行って人々に伝え、聖書に記されてあるとおり「多くの人々が、...信じ」ました。
イエス様は神であり、これらすべてが起こることを、最初から知っておられました。
この一人の女性を通して、町全体が神様へと導かれることも知っていました。
私たちの主にある喜びが伝染するのは、神様ご自身の、主にある喜びが伝染するものだからです。
本当の喜びが礼拝の中にあることを知っておられる神様は、私たちをその喜びの中へと招き、またその喜びを、私たちを通して他の人へと分かち与えてくださいます。
Here’s seven reasons I don’t attend sporting events anymore.
Every time I went, they asked for money.
The people in my row weren’t very friendly.
The referees made decisions I didn’t agree with.
Some games went into overtime and I got home late.
The games were scheduled on my only day to sleep in and do errands.
My parents took me to too many sports games growing up.
I want my kids to be free to decide which sport they like best.
Sound familiar? Now, of course I’m being sarcastic. These are the kind of excuses people make for not worshipping with the church. But we prioritize the things we delight in.
I don’t personally enjoy sports. But if you enjoy sports, none of these reasons would stop you from going to a game. No one has to persuade you to go.
Today, we’re looking at John 4:1-42. Here, a deeply immoral woman is radically changed through an encounter with Jesus.
When you encounter Jesus, your joy is uncontainable. Worship becomes more about delight than duty. Nothing can stop you from worshipping him. No one has to persuade you to invite others to worship him with you.
Here’s today’s main point. Encountering Jesus leads to true and contagious worship.
Let’s consider three ways encountering Jesus changes you.
First, encountering Jesus changes what you worship (v1-18).
As Jesus grew in popularity, he began attracting unwanted attention from the Jewish religious authorities. There was a risk they’d shut down his ministry.
So Jesus left Judea in the south and headed north to Galilee.
To get there, he had to pass through an infamous place called Samaria.
4 And he [Jesus] had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar...so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”... 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
To understand this scene, we need cultural context.
The Samaritans and Jews despised each other.
Ethnically, the Samaritans were part Jewish, part non-Jewish. Religiously, the Samariants were part Jewish, part non-Jewish. The Samaritans accepted only the first five books of the Bible. They worshiped at Mount Gerizim, not the temple in Jerusalem.
The tension between Jew and Samaritan was so bad, the Roman Empire stationed troops to keep peace between them. On top of ethnic hostility, it was considered improper for a Jewish Rabbi like Jesus to speak with a woman.
But as we’ll see, Jesus is full of surprises.
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?...13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
Jesus says ordinary water leaves you thirsty again, but living water satisfies you eternally. This is a metaphor, but the woman takes it literally.
From John 7:37-39, we know living water refers to the Holy Spirit.
Just like water fills a well, followers of Jesus are filled with the Holy Spirit, who leads us to never-ending satisfaction in God.
One poet captured the irony of being stranded at sea.
Water, water, everywhere…but not a drop to drink.
The salt water of this world fails to satisfy.
But true worship is water that will satisfy your thirsty soul.
In 1978, the U.S. National Institutes of Health studied the happiness levels of 22 lottery winners and 22 non-winners. After a few months, the winners’ happiness dropped back to the same baseline as everyone else. New cars, new houses, and new experiences spike happiness briefly—but it never lasts. This is why people get addicted to shopping, video games, junk food, pornography, and alcohol. The more you get, the more you need. As craving increases, pleasure decreases.
But there’s an aspect science can’t explain.
Sin.
Sin isn’t just breaking the “cosmic speed limit.” The essence of sin is loving anything more than God, which the Bible calls idolatry. Idolatry is taking good things and making them ultimate things.
Friendship, entertainment, children, education, and travel are good things. But if you make good-things into god-things, they will leave you empty. Following Jesus means forsaking your idols. And for this woman, her idol was relationships with men.
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
Scholars debate her situation. Some say she was married and divorced five times, and is living with a sixth man she’s not married to. Some say she had six different affairs, including an ongoing one.Which is not exactly clear.
But what is clear is she’s repeatedly violated the 7th commandment, you shall not commit adultery. It's worth saying…Jesus just assumes without explanation that sex outside marriage, living together before marriage, or unfaithfulness in marriage are all serious sins.
This isn’t your typical evangelism strategy. Many are uncomfortable with the idea of talking to unbelievers’ about their sin. But before you can be saved, you have to believe you need saving.
Sinners must be wounded by the law before they can be healed by the gospel.
Now Jesus' goal here isn’t to point out her sin and say “so just stop it… Bye.” No he knows the reason people sin is because we worship something other than God. We have a built-in desire for God, so we search for him in the wrong places.
As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “Every man who knocks on the door of a brothel is looking for God.”
A sin problem is ultimately a worship problem. That leads to our second point.
Second, encountering Jesus changes how you worship (v19-24).
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
The woman may be trying to dodge Jesus’ questions by changing the subject. Or she may be sensing he’s someone special and testing him. Either way, Jesus gives a clear answer.
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.”
Jesus says the Samaritans are wrong about both the place of worship and the object of worship. The Samaritans rejected over 66% of the Old Testament, so their worship was based on incomplete revelation. Which is why they didn’t know about God's instructions to worship at the temple in Jerusalem.
The arrival of Jesus makes the woman’s question about worship in v20 irrelevant. If I asked you “what’s better…DVD or BluRay?” You’d say… “neither… just watch Netflix!”
Likewise, the coming of Jesus makes the concept of holy places obsolete. You don’t need a special building in a specific location to worship the One True God. All you need is the Bible. Christians don’t have a Mecca or a Jerusalem where we make pilgrimages to worship God. Through Jesus, you can worship God anywhere.
23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
In the Old Testament, God set the terms for how he was to be worshipped. Now in the New Testament, Jesus claims that same authority to define worship.
And Jesus says– God doesn’t want just any worshippers, but true worshipers. We aren’t free to worship however we please, but we must worship in spirit and truth. God is concerned not only that he is worshipped, but how he is worshipped.
Worship must be a response to God’s revelation of himself through the Bible. Which is why Jesus looks at the Samaritans, with their incomplete Bible and says “you worship what you do not know.”
When Jesus says we must worship God in spirit and truth, he’s not saying our worship must be “emotional and intellectual.” That’s true, but not what Jesus means here.
Spirit 御霊, refers to the Holy Spirit.
“Truth” refers to Jesus himself, who reveals the true God.
True worship is trinitarian. We worship the Father, by the power of the Spirit, according to the truth revealed by the Son.
Now, don’t misunderstand me. True worship always involves emotion.
1 Peter 1:8 says “though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.”
Does the way you listen to sermons communicate… though you have not seen [Jesus] you love him?
Does the way you sing say… you believe in [Jesus] and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory?
You say, “I’m just not outwardly expressive in worship.” But when you watch your favorite sports team or go to a concert… are you expressive then?
Imagine we’re getting coffee. My wife and kids walk in. You see my face light up. I run over to greet them. You’d think, “Wow, he loves them. He really values them.” I want them to know I love them… AND I want you to know it too.
Likewise, when others can look at you during worship and SEE you love Jesus, it encourages them.
Some say, “if worship music affects our emotions, that’s manipulative.” But ALL music affects our emotions. Minor chords sound sad. Major chords sound joyful.
What matters is what our emotions respond to. Biblical worship stirs emotion through biblical truth. That’s why we want each element of our church gatherings to be tied directly to God’s commands in Scripture.

Because all of us, Christians included, have a tendency to idol worship. We all prefer our idea of God over the real God.
BBC ran an article last year called “Update that made ChatGPT 'dangerously' sycophantic pulled.” Users complained that no matter what you said, the chatbot affirmed you. It praised a user who got angry at people for asking directions. When another stopped taking essential medicine… it said “I am so proud of you, and I honour your journey.” Everyone agreed…a chatbot who never corrects you and always affirms you is dangerous.
…but what if that’s what you think God’s like? If you have your own concept of god, how could that god ever correct you? If you don’t let the Bible define who God is and what he expects of you, you don’t have the real God. You have a ChatGPT god.
But when we rightly worship the true God, something beautiful happens. Scholars of religion note that Christianity is communal whereas Buddhism and Shinto are more individual. Why?
Because the relationship with god in these religions is impersonal and transactional. Which is why worship looks like people lining up to put money in a vending machine. Christianity, by contrast, says life with God is best when shared with others. A meal alone is good, but it doesn’t compare to a feast with people you love. Christian worship shouldn't feel like a funeral dirge, but a party where you sing and celebrate.
Because Christians know we’re sinners. We deserve God’s judgement. Yet God has given us forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus as a free gift. So we don’t take ourselves too seriously. But we take God very seriously. And we love to invite others into this grace we’ve received.
One pastor humorously summarized the Christian message like this. I’m a complete idiot. My future is incredibly bright. Anyone can get in on this.
Which brings us to our final point. Encountering Jesus changes who you worship with (25-42).
25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
Despite their corrupted Bible, the Samaritans (like the Jews) were still expecting a Messiah. This is the first time Jesus reveals that he’s the Messiah. And the first person to know is a moral and religious outsider.
28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”
She’s amazed to learn she’s speaking with the long-awaited Messiah. She leaves her water jar behind, possibly symbolizing her abandonment of false sources of water, her forsaken idols.
What I love here is Jesus never says, “Now go and tell people about me.”
This is what’s amazing about new Christians. You never have to teach them to want others to be saved. You have to teach them how to share the gospel, but not to want others to believe the gospel.
The desire for others’ salvation is like the cry of a newborn baby. When a baby cries at birth, doctors are relieved because it means there’s new life. As Charles Spurgeon said, “Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you're not saved yourself, be sure of that!”
True worship of Jesus is contagious.
And inviting others into worship takes priority over everything else.
v30 says people went out of the town and were coming to Jesus.
Just as they arrive, his disciples return with lunch.
They urge Jesus to eat, but he says in v34: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work… lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”
In other words, “stop worrying about lunch and look at what God’s doing right now.” In times of war, countries ask their citizens to give up certain foods to support the war.
In the military, sleeping on duty is considered treason. Likewise, Jesus expects us to forsake good things that distract us from the mission to make disciples. He expects us to stay alert for how God’s working in people’s lives right in front of us.
My pastor friend had a difficult time getting a driver’s licence. Frustrated, he struck up a conversation with a man sitting next to him. My friend said he’s a Christian. The man said, “That’s strange. I had to leave Pakistan because I was accused of being a Christian—even though I’m not…But what is a Christian anyway?” My friend shared about Jesus, and the man was later baptized.
Sometimes the best evangelism comes not from special programs but doing ordinary things with gospel intentionality. You can treat the barista, real estate agent, or neighbors as faceless obstacles to your agenda. Or… you can slow down, say hello, and see what God might do. With that mindset, something as ordinary as getting water can lead to salvation.
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”...42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
What looks like a chance encounter isn’t random at all.
Remember v4: [Jesus] had to pass through Samaria. Jesus was destined to meet this woman. Because God is “seeking…people to worship him.” She believes, tells her town, “and many more believed.”
Jesus is God–he knew all this would happen.
He knew this woman was like bait God would use to catch the entire town.
Our delight in God is contagious because… God’s delight in God is contagious.
Knowing that true joy is found in worship, God invites us into it—and then shares that joy through us.
