世界中でクリスマスが祝われる中で、多くの文化に共通している伝統があります。
プレゼントを贈ること、そして受け取ることです。
小さかった頃、両親に「クリスマスはイエス様のお誕生日なのに、どうして私たちがプレゼントをもらうの？」と質問したことがあります。
この質問に答えるクリスマスのちょっとした豆知識をご紹介します。
実は、サンタクロースは聖書には登場しません。
サンタのモデルは、4世紀に実在した「ミラの聖ニコラス」という人物です。
聖ニコラスは、初代教会の指導者で、困窮している人たちにひそかに贈り物をしたことで有名でした。
たとえば、ある伝承によると、貧しい父親が、三人の娘を奴隷として売らなければならない状況に追い込まれていたそうです。
しかし夜のあいだに、聖ニコラスは三つの金の袋を煙突から投げ入れ、彼らを救ったと言われています。
時代が進むにつれ、教会は「聖人」に焦点を当てすぎてしまい、中世になると毎年12月6日、聖ニコラスの日に贈り物を交換する習慣が広まりました。
しかし宗教改革の時代、マルティン・ルターは「焦点をイエス・キリストに戻すべきだ」と考え、プレゼントを贈る日を12月25日のクリスマス当日に移しました。
ある意味で、クリスマスの中心は、結局のところプレゼントではありません。伝統は楽しいものですが、本当の中心はイエス様です。
しかし別の意味では、クリスマスはやはり「贈り物」に関係しています。
ただし、それは私たちが贈る側ではなく、受け取るという意味で、です。
今日の聖書箇所はヨハネの福音書1章1〜13節です。
ここで使徒ヨハネは、本当のクリスマスのストーリーを語っています。
クリスマスとは、イエス様が人生を変え、魂を救う贈り物を、受け取るすべての人に与えるために来られた日です。
イエス様の誕生日ではありますが、プレゼントをもらうのは、助けを必要としている私たちです。
それでは、ヨハネの福音書1章1〜13節から、イエス様がくださる三つのクリスマスの贈り物を見ていきたいと思います。
１つ目の贈り物：生きるための新しい目的（1〜5節）
1 初めにことばがあった。ことばは神とともにあった。ことばは神であった。2 この方は、初めに神とともにおられた。
「初めに」という言葉を使って、ヨハネは意図的に、聖書の1番最初の一節である創世記1章1節を思い出させるような書き方をしています。
創世記1章1節には「はじめに神が天と地を創造された。」と書かれています。
そしてヨハネは、はじめに神と共におられたのは、神のことば、すなわちイエス様であったという驚くべき証言をしています。
わずかな言葉の中に、聖書全体でも最も深い神学的宣言が記されています。
ここで一語でも変えたり動かしたりすれば、キリスト教の信仰そのものが変わってしまいます。
「ことばは神であった。」という一文は、イエス様が父なる神と同じ神であることを示しています。
神の子であるイエス様は、父なる神とまったく同じ神的属性を持っておられます。
「ことばは神とともにあった。」という一文は、イエス様が父なる神とは区別される存在であることを示します。
父と子は同じ神の本質を共有していますが、別の位格です。
聖書によると、この世界に存在するすべてのものは、「創造主」か「被造物」のどちらかに分類されます。
そして3節で、ヨハネはイエス様を明確に「創造主」のカテゴリーに置いています。
3 すべてのものは、この方によって造られた。造られたもので、この方によらずにできたものは一つもなかった。
ここでもヨハネは、私たちの視点を旧約聖書の創世記へと引き寄せます。
創世記 1章3節、神は仰せられた。「光、あれ。」すると光があった。
イエス様は、神様が全ての物を存在へと語り出された、そのみことばです。
そして、これこそがクリスマスの偉大な奇跡です。神様が世界を創造されたその「みことば」ご自身が、創造された世界の中へと歩み込んで来られたのです。
そして4-5節が語るように、神のことばであるイエス様が人となられたからこそ、私たちはいのちと光を持つことができます。
古くからあるクリスマスの賛美歌には、実はとても堅実な神学が込められています。
今日の礼拝の初めに歌った「O Come All Ye Faithful（いざもろとも主を）」と言う歌には、ヨハネ1章1節の表現がそのまま使われています。
「実に『ことば』人となられた」と歌っています。
ヨハネ1章1〜5節は、神が三位一体であることを教えています。
三位一体とは、唯一まことの生ける神のうちに父・子・聖霊の三つの位格が存在するという教えです。
ギャビン・オートランドは『Why God Makes Sense In A World That Doesn’t（理不尽な世界で、なぜ神は意味を持つのか）』という本の中で、次の鋭い洞察を述べています。
神の存在を否定する自然主義的無神論は、「愛」は人類の進化の過程で偶然生まれた副産物にすぎないと言います。
神がいないのならば、愛と言うものは、私たちの祖先が生き延びるのに役立つため、生まれたにすぎません。しかし三位一体の神を信じる立場では、愛は宇宙の中心にあると語ります。
もし神が三位一体であるならば、父・子・聖霊の間には、永遠の昔から愛が存在していたことになります。
もし神が単一の位格しか持たない「単一神」だったならば、
神が世界を創造するまでは、神が愛を注ぐ相手は存在しないことになります。
しかし、神が三位一体なるお方であり、三つでありながら一つであるからこそ、神様は愛を得るためではなく、愛を与えるために宇宙を創造されました。
父と子と聖霊からなる三位一体の神は、ご自身の内に満ちあふれる愛の豊かさから宇宙を造られました。
そして御子イエス・キリストを通して、この愛の交わりへと、 神様は私たちを招いておられます。
だから、もしクリスチャンが...
なぜ生きているのですか？ あなたの人生の目的は何ですか？と聞かれたら
私たちの答えは：「イエス・キリストを通して、神を知り、神を愛し、神に仕えるため」です。
コリント人への手紙 第一 8章6節はこのように語ります：私たちには、父なる唯一の神がおられるだけで、この神からすべてのものは発し、この神に私たちは至るからです。また、唯一の主なるイエス・キリストがおられるだけで、この主によってすべてのものは存在し、この主によって私たちも存在するからです。
こう思っている方もいるかもしれません。
「なんで人生の目的なんて考える必要があるの？
意味なんて気にせず、生きたいように生きればいいじゃないか。」
ここで、私たちが人生の目的を考えなければならない3つの理由をお伝えします。
1つ目は、私たちには神様から与えられた目的が必要だからです。
たとえば私があなたに、「明日の朝6時に天神駅に来て」と言って、そのまま立ち去ったとしたら…
もちろんこう聞きますよね。
「え、なんで？」
「なぜ明日の朝6時に会うのか？」その理由は求めるのに…人生全体についての理由は、いまだに答えられない人が意外が多いのです！
なぜ学校に行くのか？なぜ仕事をするのか？
なぜ結婚するのか？なぜ子どもを持つのか？なぜ旅行するのか？
多くの人は「そう、それこそが私が生きている理由です。家族、仕事、旅行…。私は自分で作った目的のために生きているんです。」と言います。
自分で目的を作るのは、自由でワクワクするように聞こえますが、問題があります。
自分で作った人生の目的は、必ずこの世に根ざしていて、いつでも奪われてしまう可能性があります。
人は死に、仕事は失敗し、旅行もお金がなければ続けられません。
「自分の人生には自分が与えた目的がある」と言うことによって、あなた自身、人生には目的が必要だと認めているのです。
人間には目的が必要です。ただ生きて、ただ生存するだけでは足りません。
その理由は、「すべての人に共通した、神様が与える客観的な目的」が実際に存在するからです。
魚には水が必要で、水は存在しています。
赤ちゃんにはミルクが必要で、ミルクは存在しています。
人には目的が必要で、目的は存在しています。
2つ目の理由は、神様からの目的なしに生きることは、壊滅的で、成り立たないからです。
神なしには、道徳はただの人間の意見です。「殺人は悪い」という言葉は、「黄色はダサい」というのと同じ重みしか持ちません。
無神論者ジャン＝ポール・サルトルはこう言いました。
「神がいないなら、すべてのことが許される。」
「でも、私は神なしに普通に幸せに生きてるよ」と言う人もいます。
なぜなら、それは「本気で自分の信じていることの通りには生きていない」からです。
もし神がいないならば…今私たちが存在する理由は「強い者が弱い者を食べてきたから」です。
私たちの祖先は強かったから生き残り、弱かった者は死んだのだとしたら、
強い者が弱い者を食べる世界でいいのでしょうか？
ほとんどの現代人は、もちろん「そんなのダメだ」と言います。
神がいないとするならば、愛というものも、祖先が生き残るために役立った、ただの脳内化学物質の反応にすぎません。
今度、奥さんや子どもをハグするとき、思い出してみてください。
あなたが感じている愛は、ただの化学反応で、あなたのその人への行動は、10億年後には何の意味もなくなると。
そう考えると、幸せには生きられないのではないでしょうか？
「キリスト教は反知性的だ」と言われることがありますが、実は真逆です。
無神論者は、自分が本当に何を信じているのかを考えない限りにおいてしか、幸せではいられません。
クリスチャンは、自分が本当に何を信じているのかを深く考えることで幸せになります。
3つ目の理由は、神様から与えられた目的を理解することで、豊かに生きられるからです。
私がフォークでスープを食べようとして、うまくすくえずイライラしていていると想像してみて下さい。
皆さんは、「いやいや、フォークはそういうには使わないよ！パスタを食べるための道具でしょ」と言うはずです。
物は“目的に沿って”使われるときに、最もよく機能します。
ヨハネは、イエス様を「ことば λόγος（ロゴス）」と呼ぶことで、同じポイントを語っています。
ギリシャ人には「ロゴス」という、人間が造られた理由や目的を表す概念がありました。
「自分たちが造られた理由を見つけることができれば、本来の力を最大限に発揮できる」と考えていました。
そしてヨハネは、「あなたの人生には確かな目的がある——それは抽象的な哲学的原理ではなく、あなたが実際に知ることのできるお方、イエス・キリストご自身だ」と語っています。
イエス様を知り、イエス様に従うとき、私たちは存在の理由を理解し、創造された目的に向かって最大限の可能性を発揮できるようになるのです。
光といのちは、イエス様を通してこの世にやって来ました。
そしてイエス様によって、私たちは生きるための新しい目的（1–5節）を私たちは与えられています。
しかし、世の光であるイエス様が来られたことは、もう一つ大きな贈り物を意味します。
光について証しするという、新しい使命（6–8節）です。
6神から遣わされた一人の人が現れた。その名はヨハネであった。7この人は証しのために来た。光について証しするためであり、彼によってすべての人が信じるためであった。彼は光ではなかった。8ただ光について証しするために来たのである。
使徒ヨハネがここで語っている「ヨハネ」とは、別のヨハネであるバプテスマのヨハネのことです。
バプテスマのヨハネは、長い間待ち望まれていたメシアのための道を備えるために来た預言者でした。
そして、古代史の専門家であればクリスチャンであろうとなかろうと皆が一致して認めていることは、バプテスマのヨハネは非常に重要な人物だったということです。
1世紀の偉大なユダヤ人歴史家であるヨセフスが、イエス以外に新約聖書の人物として取り上げているのは、バプテスマのヨハネだけです。
また、マタイの福音書14章5節では、バプテスマのヨハネが民衆の間でとても人気のある預言者だったと記されています。
さらに、イエス様もルカの福音書 7章28節で「 わたしはあなたがたに言います。女から生まれた者の中で、ヨハネよりも偉大な者はだれもいません。」と語っています。
では、バプテスマのヨハネの何がそんなに特別なのでしょうか？
ユダヤ人たちは、旧約聖書最後の預言者マラキの言葉が最後に語られて以来、神は沈黙されたままだと信じていました。
しかしその後460年ぶりに、バプテスマのヨハネによってマラキ書4章の最後の言葉が成就し始めたのです。
見よ。わたしは、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、預言者エリヤをあなたがたに遣わす。
バプテスマのヨハネは、新しいエリヤとして、主の日が来たこと、キリストであるイエスが来られたことを告げ知らせるために現れました。
しかし、人々はイエス様よりもバプテスマのヨハネのほうにワクワクしてしまいました。
そのため、6〜8節は、バプテスマのヨハネではなくイエスが光である ということをリマインドしています。
だからこそ、ヨハネの福音書 3章30節で「あの方(イエス様）は盛んになり、私は衰えなければなりません。」とバプテスマのヨハネの働きを象徴する言葉が語られています。
クリスチャンの皆さん、私たちにも同じことが言えます。私たちの使命は 光になることではなく、光について証しすることです。
説教者としての私のゴールは、皆さんに「なんて素晴らしい説教だ！」と言ってもらうことではなく、「主はなんて素晴らしい救い主なんだ！」と言ってもらうことです。
イエス様が太陽ならば、私たちクリスチャンは、暗い世界に向かって、太陽の光をかすかに反射しているだけの月のような存在です。
高校の物理の授業で知って驚いたのですが、月がなくても地球上の生命は生きていけるそうです！
イエス様はご自分の栄光を輝かせるために私たちを必要としているわけではありませんが、それでもなお私たちを用いてくださるのは、私たちを愛しておられるからです。
クリスチャンでない方々、だからこそ、イエス様に従っている人間にではなく、イエス様ご自身に望みを置くべきなのです。
三浦綾子さんは、クリスチャンになる前、教会で嫌な経験をしたにもかかわらず、それでクリスチャンをやめようとはしませんでした。
教会の人々の中には、私を拒んだり、非難したりする人もいました。でもそれは、私がキリスト教を学ぶうえで大きな妨げにはなりませんでした。むしろ、教会にも私と同じように弱く愚かな人間がいるとわかったことは、私に深い安心感を与えました。「あんな人でも神に受け入れられるなら、もしかしたら私も受け入れられるのではないか」と、傲慢にも思ったのです。そして私はもっと注意深く聖書を読むようになりました。
私たちクリスチャンは、自分たちの使命どおりに生きられないことがあるからこそ、私たちのアイデンティティは、私たちのパフォーマンスによって決まるのではないということがグッドニュースなのです。
ここから最後のクリスマスの贈り物について考えていきましょう。
それは「神の子どもとされる」という新しいアイデンティティです（9–13節）
9 すべての人を照らすそのまことの光が、世に来ようとしていた。
イエス様がすべての人を照らすとはどういう意味でしょうか？
それは、すべての人が救われ、すべての人が神の子どもになるという意味でしょうか？
違います。
写真を撮るとき、ライティングによって私たちは良くも悪くも見えます。
そしてイエス様が世を照らす光は、
私たちの最高の道徳的パフォーマンスを照らし出すスポットライトではなく、
洗面所の鏡のLEDライトのように、私たちの欠点をありのままにさらけ出す光です。
このことについて、イエス様のヨハネ3章での言葉をみてみましょう。
そのさばきとは、光が世に来ているのに、自分の行いが悪いために、人々が光よりも闇を愛したことである。悪を行う者はみな、光を憎み、その行いが明るみに出されることを恐れて、光の方に来ない。
罪によって暗くなった世界に、イエス様のまばゆい光が差し込むと、人々は極端な反応を示します。
イエス様の光を拒む人たちもいます。
10 この方はもとから世におられ、世はこの方によって造られたのに、世はこの方を知らなかった。11 この方はご自分のところに来られたのに、ご自分の民はこの方を受け入れなかった。
イエス様は創造主でありながら、ご自分が造られた世界に入って来られたのです。
そして長い間メシアを待ち望んでいたイスラエルに来られました。なのに、悲しいことに彼らはイエス様を拒み、ついには殺してしまいました。
アメリカには「アンダーカバー・ボス（Undercover Boss）」という番組がありました。
その番組では、CEOが正体を隠して普通の従業員として働き、
時には、従業員がお客さんにひどい対応をしていたり、マネージャーが部下を虐待するように扱っている様子を見ることもありました。
そして時には、CEO本人が従業員にひどく扱われることもあります。
でも、最後に正体を明かして、「実は私はCEOだ。君はクビだ！！」と言うのです。
イエス様は、究極の正体を隠した「アンダーカバー・ボス」です。
しかし、イエス様が受けたのは単になる不当な扱いではなく、死でした。
そして、当然なら拒んだ人々を裁くことができたのに、イエス様はその力を使って、彼らを救い、赦されました。
イエス様を拒んだ人もいましたが、同時に受け入れた人たちもいました。
12 しかし、この方を受け入れた人々、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、神の子どもとなる特権をお与えになった。13 この人々は、血によってではなく、肉の望むところでも人の意志によってでもなく、ただ、神によって生まれたのである。
12–13節は、人がどのようにしてクリスチャンになるのかを説明しています。
クリスチャンになるというのは、イエス様の名を信じてイエス様を受け入れることであり、そうするとき、神様は私たちに神の子どもとなる権利を与えてくださいます。
しかし、信じてから振り返ってみると、それは自分が何か“した”というよりも、自分が“生まれる”のと同じように自分に“起きた”出来事だったのだと気づくのです。
生まれたばかりの2人の娘を病院から家に連れて帰ったとき、私は「わあ、今日はこの子たちの努力に本当に感心したなぁ」とは思いませんでした。
私が思ったのは「ただただ愛している！あなたという存在そのものを愛しているよ！」ということだけでした。
クリスチャンでいることは、あなたに対する神様の喜びが「あなたの働きや頑張り」に基づいているものではないと悟ることです。
12–13節は、今日よくある2つの宗教観に真っ向から反対しています。
例えば「生まれ」が神様への道だと思っている人がいます。
イスラムの家庭に生まれたらイスラム教。ヒンドゥーの家庭に生まれたらヒンドゥー教。
しかし、キリスト教は世界で唯一、“生まれながらにして属することのできない”宗教です。
私が東京で働いていた教会には、ある牧師の娘さんがいましたが、みんなは当然彼女をクリスチャンだと思っていました。
でもある夜、彼女は「実はまだ信じてはいません。でも、質問に答えてくれる人がいると思って教会に来ました」と告白しました。
クリスチャンの親御さん、子どもたちが自動的に信じるわけではありません。
皆さんは全力で愛して、イエス様へと導く必要があります。
また、「努力こそが神への道だ」と考える人もいます。
仏教では八正道を行えば悟り（涅槃・ねはん）に達すると言います。
イスラムでは五行を行えば天国に行けると言います。
しかしイエス様は、神の国に入るには新しく生まれなければならないと言います。
今日、ぜひお母さんに電話して「私って、生まれるときに何か貢献した？」と聞いてみてください。
あなたが使徒パウロの子どもだったとしても、
罪のために海のような涙を流したとしても、
全財産を貧しい人に与えたとしても、
あなたの「家柄」「誠実さ」「努力」では救われません。
救うことができるのは、ただイエス様だけです。
クリスマスは、イエス様がこの世に究極の贈り物を持って来られたというものです。
『ナルニア国物語』の著者C.S.ルイスは次のように美しく要約しています：
神の子が人となられたのは、人を神の子とするためである。
イエス様がくださる究極の贈り物があるから、信じる者は...
苦しみが奪うことのできない“生きる目的”が与えられます。
世界に希望をもたらす“使命”が与えられます。
努力ではなく恵みに基づく“アイデンティティ”が与えられます。
As Christmas is celebrated all over the world, one tradition is common to many cultures.
Giving presents, receiving gifts.
As a little kid, I remember asking my parents, “If Christmas is Jesus’ birthday, why do we get gifts?”
To answer, here’s some fun Christmas trivia.
Did you know Santa Claus isn’t actually from the Bible?
Santa is based on a real person from the 4th century named Saint Nicholas of Myra.
St. Nicholas was a leader in the ancient Christian church known for secretly giving gifts to desperately needy people.
For example, one tradition says a poor father was almost forced to sell his three daughters into slavery.
But during the night, St. Nicholas secretly threw in three bags of gold through the chimney to rescue them.
Over time, the church got a little too focused on the Saints, and by the Middle Ages, on December 6th, gifts would be exchanged in St. Nicholas’ honor every year.
During the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther wanted to bring the focus back onto Jesus Christ, so he moved gift-giving to Christmas Day, December 25th.
In one sense, Christmas is not ultimately about gifts. Traditions are fun, but the point is Jesus.
But there’s another sense in which Christmas is actually about gifts… just not the gifts we give.
Our text this morning is John 1:1-13.
Here, the Apostle John tells the real Christmas story.
(Main Point) Christmas is about Jesus coming to give life-changing, soul-saving gifts to all who receive them.
It’s Jesus' birthday, but we’re the desperately needy ones getting the gifts.
Let’s consider three Christmas gifts from Jesus in John 1:1-13.
First gift, a new purpose for living (1-5).
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
By starting with “in the beginning” John is deliberately hyper-linking us back to the first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1.
Genesis 1:1 says “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
And John makes a shocking claim, in the beginning with God was Jesus, the Word of God.
In a few short words, we find the most profound theological statement ever written.
If you change or move just one word, you change the entire Christian faith.
“The Word was God” identifies Jesus with God the Father.
Jesus, God the Son has all the same divine attributes as God the Father.
“The Word was with God” distinguishes Jesus from God the Father.
The Father and the Son share the same divine nature, but are distinct persons.
According to the Bible, there’s two categories for all things that exist: Creator and Creation.
And in v3, John puts Jesus firmly in the category of “Creator.”
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Again, John draws us back to Genesis in the Old Testament.
Genesis 1:3, And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Jesus is the Word through whom God spoke all things into existence.
And here is the grand miracle of Christmas. The same Word through whom God created the world stepped into the world God created.
And as v4-5 say, because Jesus the Word of God, became a man we can have life and light.
The old Christmas songs actually have some really solid theology.
The song we sang at the beginning of the service, O Come All Ye Faithful, uses the language of John 1:1 to describe Jesus.
It says Jesus is “Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.”
John 1:1-5 teaches that God is a Trinity.
The Trinity means that there are three persons in the one true and living God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Gavin Ortlund has a great insight in his book Why God Makes Sense In A World That Doesn’t.
Naturalistic atheism, which denies God, says love is the accidental byproduct of human evolution.
If there’s no God, love only exists because it helped our ancestors survive.
Trinitarian theism, which affirms one God in three persons, says love is at the center of the universe.
If God is a Trinity, love has always existed between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
If God was a unitarian God, absolutely one, until he created the universe he would have no object of his love.
But because God is a Trinitarian God, three in one, he didn’t create the universe to get love, but to give love.
The Triune God– Father, Son, and Spirit– created the universe out of the overflow of the love within himself.
And God invites us into that love through his Son, Jesus Christ.
So if a Christian is asked…
Why do you live? What’s the purpose of your life?
Our answer is simple: to know God, to love God, to serve God through Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 8:6 says: There is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
I know what some of you might be thinking.
“Why do I need to think about the purpose of my life? Why can’t I just live my life without worrying about its meaning?”
Here’s three reasons you must consider the purpose of human life.
First, we need God-given purpose.
Let’s say I told you, “Meet me at Tenjin Station at 6 a.m. tomorrow,” and then walked away.
What would be your next question?
“Why,” right?
You want a reason to meet me at 6 a.m. tomorrow, and yet… some of you can’t even give a reason for your whole life!
Why are you going to school, why are you working… why are you getting married, having kids, going on vacation?
But you say, “Well, that’s exactly why I’m living: my family, my work, my travel. I’m living for the purpose I made for myself.”
Creating your own purpose sounds liberating and exciting, but there’s a problem.
A self-created purpose is always grounded in this world, in something that can be taken away from you.
People die, careers fail, vacations get too expensive.
By saying “my life has the purpose I give to it,” you’re admitting we need a purpose for our lives.
Humans need purpose, we need more than just to exist and survive.
The reason is because an objective, God-given purpose that’s the same for everyone, actually exists.
Fish need water—water exists.
Babies need milk—milk exists.
Humans need purpose—purpose exists.
Second, life without God-given purpose is devastating and unlivable.
Without God, morality is just human opinion. The statement “murder is wrong” would carry no more weight than “yellow is ugly.”
Or as atheist Jean-Paul Sartre put it, “If there’s no God, all things are permitted.”
You say, “That may be true, but my life is going fine without God.”
Yes, because you don’t actually live as though your beliefs are really true.
If there’s no God, we’re here because the strong ate the weak.
Our ancestors survived because they were strong; the weak died.
So… should we just let the strong eat the weak?
Most modern people, thankfully, would say no.
If there’s no God, then love is just brain chemistry that helped our ancestors survive.
So next time you hug your spouse or child, remember this.
The love you feel is just chemicals, and everything you’re doing for them won’t matter a billion years from now.
Would thinking about that make you happy?
It’s often claimed that Christianity is anti-intellectual, but it's the opposite.
As an atheist, you can be happy only as long as you don’t think about what you really believe.
As a Christian, you can be happy only when you do think about what you really believe.
Third, understanding our God-given purpose helps us live well.
Imagine you saw me trying to eat soup with a fork and getting very frustrated.
You’d say “that’s now how the fork was made to be used. How about using it to eat pasta instead?”
Things function best when they’re used according to their purpose.
John makes the same point by calling Jesus the Word—the λόγος logos.
The Greeks had a concept of a logos, a reason or goal for which human life was created.
They said “if we can just discover the reason we were created, we can reach our full potential.”
And John says, there is a purpose for your life— but it's not an abstract philosophical principle- it's a person you can know, Jesus Christ.
And when you know Jesus and follow him, you discover the reason you exist and reach the full potential for which you were created.
Light and life have come into the world through Jesus.
And because of Jesus, we have the gift of a new purpose for living (1-5).
But the arrival of Jesus, the Light of the World, brings another gift.
A new mission to bear witness (6-8) about the light.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
The Apostle John is speaking of a different John here, John the Baptist.
John the Baptist was a prophet who came to prepare the way for the long awaited Messiah.
And if there’s something that all experts in ancient history, Christian or not, agree on, it's that John the Baptist was a very significant figure.
Besides Jesus, the only New Testament figure the great 1st century Jewish historian Josephus talks about is John the Baptist.
Matthew 14:5 says John the Baptist was very popular among the common people as a prophet.
Even Jesus says in Luke 7:28 “I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John.”
So what’s the big deal about John the Baptist?
The Jews believed that ever since the last words of the final Old Testament prophet, Malachi, God had remained silent.
And now after 460 years, with John the Baptist the last words of the Old Testament from Malachi 4 were being fulfilled.
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
John the Baptist, the new Elijah, had come to announce the day of the Lord had come, Jesus the Christ was born.
But people were getting more excited about John the Baptist than Jesus.
And so v6-8 reminds us that John the Baptist is not the light, Jesus is.
Which is why one of the mottos of the Baptist’s ministry is John 3:30 “He [Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease.”
Christian, the same is true of us. Our mission isn’t to be the Light, but to testify about the Light.
As a preacher, my goal is not to get you to say “what a sermon!”, but “what a Savior!”
If Jesus is the sun, we Christians are the moon, dimly reflecting his light to a dark world.
And as I was surprised to learn from my high school physics teacher, life on earth would survive without the moon!
Jesus doesn’t need us to bring glory to his name, but he chooses to use us because he loves us.
Non-Christian, this is why you should put your hope in Jesus, not his followers.
Before she came to faith, the writer Ayako Miura didn’t let her bad experiences at church deter her from learning about Christianity.
Although some of the people at church rejected and even denounced me, this did not particularly hinder me in my search. Rather, the fact that there were church people as weak and foolish as I was myself gave me a deep sense of reassurance. Arrogantly I thought, 'If God accepts that sort of person, isn't it possible that he will even accept me?' And I began to read the Bible more attentively.
We Christians often fail to live up to our calling, which is why it's good news our identity isn’t based on performance.
Which brings us to the last Christmas gift from Jesus we’ll consider.
A new identity as God’s children (9-13).
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
What does it mean that Jesus gives light to everyone?
Does it mean that everyone is saved and everyone is God’s child?
No.
Lighting really affects how good or bad you look in a photo.
And the light Jesus shines into the world isn’t a spotlight highlighting our best moral performances.
It's an LED light in a bathroom mirror exposing all our worst flaws.
Listen to what Jesus says elsewhere in John 3.
The light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
The bright light of Jesus shining into a world darkened by sin provokes extreme reactions.
Some reject the light of Jesus.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Jesus the Creator stepped into the world he made. He came to Israel, the very people waiting for the Messiah. And yet, tragically and ironically, they rejected and killed him.
There used to be a show in the US called Undercover Boss.
A CEO would work undercover as a regular employee.
Sometimes they’d see employees mistreating customers, or managers abusing their workers.
Sometimes the CEO was mistreated themselves.
But then came the big reveal: “I’m the CEO—and you’re fired!!!”
Jesus is the ultimate Undercover Boss.
But instead of being merely mistreated, he’s killed.
And instead of using his power to crush the people who rejected him, he uses his power to save and forgive them.
Some rejected Jesus, but others received him.
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Verses 12-13 explain how someone becomes a Christian.
To become a Christian, you receive Jesus by believing in his name, and when you do, God gives you the right to become his child.
But then, after you believe, you look back and realize it was far less something you did and far more something that happened to you, like being born.
When I took my two newborn daughters home from the hospital, I wasn’t thinking “wow I’m really impressed with all their efforts today.”
No, I thought “I love you just because I love you! Just because of who you are!”
To be a Christian is to realize that God’s pleasure in you is not based on your performance for him.
Verses 12 and 13 go against the two most common ideas about religion in the world today.
Some think background is the way to God.
If you’re born to a Muslim family, you’re Muslim. If you’re born to a Hindu family, you’re Hindu.
But Christianity is the only religion in the world you absolutely cannot be born into.
At a church I worked at in Tokyo, a pastor’s daughter attended the church. For weeks, everyone just assumed she was a Christian.
Until one night she shared that she didn’t believe but came to our church hoping someone would help with her questions.
Christian parents, it’s not just a given that your kids will come to believe.
You have to do everything in your power to love them and introduce them to Jesus.
Others believe effort is the way to God.
Buddha says you get Nirvana by following the Eightfold Path.
Mohammed says you get to heaven by following the Five Pillars.
Jesus says you enter the kingdom of God by being born again.
Later today, call your mom and ask her if you contributed anything to being born.
You could be a child of the Apostle Paul.
You could cry an ocean of tears for your sins.
You could give all your money to the poor.
But your heritage, your sincerity, or your effort cannot save you.
Only Jesus can save you!
Christmas means that Jesus has come into the world bringing the ultimate gift.
CS Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, summarized it beautifully.
The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.
And because of the ultimate gift Jesus brings, all who believe have
A purpose that suffering can’t take away.
A mission to bring hope to the world.
An identity not based on performance.
